RAP ATTACK'S "ROCK THE BEAT VOLUME ONE!"

[[ May 17, 2004  ]]

What's upper! It's been a week now since the Urban Network conference & I'm still recouping! Last Friday night at L.A.'s Temple club was the place to be for DJ Nu-Mark's record release party. Yo, the place was packed & joining Nu-Mark on stage was Charlie 2'na & J-Live. They had the crowd rockin' all night. Hangin' with me that night was DJ Honeycut & his girl Serena (KPSU-Portland), DJ A-Beats (WGMU-Washington D.C.), DJ I.D. & Amen (KTOB-Northern Cali) & my girl, Jessica Weber (Spectre Music). What a night!... The big news of the week & one of the best rap comebacks in a long time is the return of

Ma$e & his new joint "Welcome Back" (Bad Boy/Universal). The first time I heard this was on our local station, 100.3 The Beat & once I logged on to my computer, I had 2 MP3's of "Welcome Back." You gotta admit that after peepin' this, it was nice to have Ma$e back again & back with a cut that is bangin'! Here's what a few of our Rap Attack dj's had to say about Ma$e's comeback: L-Precise (KVRI-Vancouver B.C.); " Dope track! I llike the new Ma$e. I have to admit that I always liked his smooth flow. Thanks for sending the tracks my way!"... Jon? Doe (KCPR-San Luis Obispo); " That Ma$e is dope Nes! He's obviously stressing his clean lifestyle, etc. I'm looking forward to hearing him again"... Doug Dilly (KXCI-Tucson); " That Ma$e track was dope. It was crazy to hear him rapping again. I ain't heard a Ma$e record in a long ass time. I liked the Welcome Back Kotter sample too..who produced it??"...  Another welcome back is in order for Heavy D.! Yup, yup, Heavy D. has signed a deal with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy label. In a ground breaking agreement, Heavy will receive 100 percent of the profits from his Bad Boy release after the label recoups costs for producing the untitled LP. "Puff & I have been friends forever, were family," Heavy D. "He gave me the most incredible deal." A single from the LP titled "It's Your Birthday," was recently leaked to radio & the album is slated for a fall release. Chill Will (WCBN-Ann Arbor) & I got a chance to hear it over a week ago & "It's Your Birthday" is a tight R&B/Hip-Hop track that'll blow up on the radio, in the clubs, on mixtapes & in yo' speakers!!! Both Ma$e & Heavy D are BACK... On a very sad note out of Philadelphia, the man who helped sing "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," John Whitehead of McFadden & Whitehead has been shot and killed. According to reports, Whitehead, 55, and another man were working on a vehicle when they were shot by two gunmen, who fled the scene, police said. Whitehead was shot in the neck and collapsed. Ohmed Johnson, who was shot in the buttocks, was in good condition. Besides writing and recording the 1979 classic R&B hit, "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," the duo also wrote several hits performed by others in the 1970s, including "Back Stabbers," "For the Love of Money, (you youngin' will know this as the theme song to NBC's 'The Apprentice')" "I'll Always Love My Mamma," "Bad Luck," "Wake Up Everybody" and "Where Are All My Friends" among others... On a brighter note, our homeboy, formerly of SRC, Cleavon "Ice" Shuler is now handling Mixshow Promotions over at Atlantic Records. He told me that he will do his very best to get our Rap Attack panel back on board on Atlantic's mailing list. He's always looked out for us since his days at Loud & I know he'll continue to do the same over at Atlantic. Last Saturday, Cleavon was spotted on BET's "The Next!" Give our fam a holla at (212) 707-2274 or online at: Cleavon.Shuler@atlantic-recording.com... Thanks for showing love with King Gordy's "Nightmares" (Web Ent.) joint. The video to "Nightmares" will make it's debut on BET's "The Next" this Saturday, May 22nd at 1pm (est) & then on Monday, May 24th at 11am (check local listings). King Gordy has just been added to the D-12 tour as their opening act! In Seattle Hip-Hop news, local Hip-Hop group, The Blue Scholars earned Album Of The Year for all genres at Seattle Weekly's 2004 Music Awards."I was initially shocked because I didn't even know we were nominated," Geologic said. "But we definitely can't stop now. We gotta work many times harder to keep making quality music.” The duo of emcee Geologic and producer/deejay Sabzi released their self-titled debut album last March and also received a nomination for Hip-hop Artist Of The Year won by Vitamin D. Geologic and Sabzi, both Seattle area natives, formed Blue Scholars in early 2002 and quickly established a buzz because of their engaging live show. Since then the duo has played on the same bill as Lyrics Born, Sage Francis, Ugly Duckling and Typical Cats. The group's best performance came before a capacity crowd at Chop Suey opening for Del Tha Funkee Homosapien this past February.Blue Scholars released the album that helped satisfy and expand its loyal fanbase throughout the Pacific Northwest. Media such as The Stranger, Seaspot, and the University of Washington’s student newspaper, The Daily, also matched the response of the people with critical praise. Blue Scholars plan on a nationwide re-release in summer 2004 of the debut album with new artwork and previously unavailable bonus tracks. This just in from Stuart de la Rosa aka Anilast outta KAFM in Grand Junction, CO., " Whats up my fellow ladies and gents, how does your day go? For myself I am doing quite well. I am going to be the Hip-Hop cat over at KMSA 91.3 during the summer. This means a couple of things, one I can get two reports a week for everyone. I am already hook up with CMJ and all my other reports I can send charts for two stations. Second I get double aritime a week to crush the air waves of western Colorado. I am not sure if you have been sending it over to KMSA, I saw some of it when I did my late night show but I wasn't sure if you were sending it over that way. If you forgot the address it is: 91.3 KMSA Stuart de la Rosa 1175 Texas Ave Grand Junction CO. 81501. If this works out with you let me know so I can prepare myself for double the load...

From Jason D (KHDC), " First off, shouts to Christina Alonzo for putting on a solid conference at Urban Network (see photo above). A good time was had by all. While smaller than year's past, I actually liked the smaller crowds (read: no drama) and all the events ran smooth and on time. The radio/label panel and screening of BEEF II were definitely highlights. Big ups to my roomies Nasty Nes, Chill Will, and J Bully for holdin me down. Extra shouts to Jessica from Spectre who got a promoter of the year award from Urban Network. I would like to personally give her the official drankin' patna award as the only person who bought me a beer all weekend. The label of the weekend award goes to the Sony/Columbia crew. The peeps DJ Splif, Nick Huff and Nathan Sheard were really doing it. They were on the panels, at the meet & greets, had artists performing, had promotional wax.... just on top of their game in general. I heard CMJ is mid October this year. Save your dollar kiddies"...

From Chela No.1 (WXDU), "Large up Christina Alonzo and to everybody I met up with this past weekend at the Urban Network Conference in Palm Springs: Nasty Nes, Davey D, Jessica, Nash, Sherry, Mii Mii, Chill Will, Mike Jax, Justo, Kate Wolfson, Aaron, Adam, DJ Ran, Ken, DJ Jelly, DJ Splif, DJ Blue Steel, DJ Resident, QD3, Mar, J Bully and many more. I have that "No.1 Product Vol 2," hosted by Mother Nature & Shelly B mix cd, about to officially hit the streets! I know some of ya'll have been waiting on it for a minute. Peep out next week's "Tales From The TapeDeck" for theexclusive mix cd review!"...       Big ups to my pare, DJ Yoshi who was named "Urban Network's 2004 College DJ Of The Year!!!"...

Sounds like our dawg, Edgie Kokowski is on a rampage once again! Reppin' WUNH in Durham, NH here's what's up wit' Edgie, " I wish that rappers would stop acting. I think rappers believe that they are really branching out artistically when they are acting, but they are not. Look at these hip hop movies/TV shows. The latest spectacles are Johnny Blaze and Funk Doc playing a couple of brain-dead stereotypical rap guys in "Method & Red". Then I caught previews for the new rap-sploitive Snoop Dogg vehicle "Soul Plane". It's incredible to me how many of these rappers don't even see how type-cast they are. Or maybe they do realize it but the money makes them not care. The only encouraging ad I saw was one on HBO that pitted Mos Def as a 1940's doctor opposite Alan Rickman. Not that's branching out. If rappers wanted to be artistic in their acting, Method Man should play a drill sargeant, Redman should be a republican, and Snoop Dogg should play a gay guy, etc.....something like that. Rappers playing rappers....wow....so exciting. It's like me getting a role in a movie playing a tool who drinks lots of beers and digs thru crates of records and never scores, Edgie Soprano"...

Another reminder that Rap Attack's servicing with Interscope Records is about to become a reality once again! Recently I took their master mailing list & took about three hours outta my day to update their mailing list with a very up to date mailing list with the correct names, call letters, mailing addresses & contact phone numbers. Big ups to Interscope's Garrett Williams on all his help but with cutbacks going on at Interscope, Garrett's hands are full. I have been informed to let you know that if you need help with getting product from Interscope, you need to holla at Chunk effective now. You can reach Chunk at (323) 304-1311...         Austin, TX's DJ NickNack will be on tour with Diverse and RJD2(djing for Diverse). Here are the dates:
