I
hope everyone had a blessed & a safe Labor Day weekend!
NASTY NEWS is back & I know I'm 2 days late but I'm just
gettin' back from one of my best trips back home ever in
Seattle, WA.! This weeks column will be short & sweet.
This years'
BrainStormBattle.com emcee battle 2004 was off
tha hook! I thought L.A.'s "Freestyle Session" battle
topped it all, but
Seattle's
BrainStorm gets the #1 spot! Big props goes out to
Sam Chesneau & Marc Matsui for the hard work
they put into this 4 day event & to my dawgs Poison
Pen & One Man Army who hosted the battle & to
DJ's Vin-Roc & J-Live who layed down the
beats on the one's & two's! Chicago's Rhymefest
was supposed to fly up & defend his title, but due to
personal family issues, Rhymefest did not make it (peep
out this weeks' "Tales From The TapeDeck"
as we repeat our mix cd review on Rhymefest!). I was
amazed to see how dope the majority of this years
contestants are & how phat their lyrical flow off the
top of their heads were. It was amazing & the winner won
by just a hair! This years BrainStorm '04 emcee champ
was this young kat, New York's own Aaron Solomon
barely beating down
Chicago's
O.G., Presence. I loved the great sportsmanship
all the contestants showed during the 2 day battle. If
you ever get a chance to peep Aaron Solomon, Presence &
Rhymefest in your hood, PLEASE peep them out!. Sharing
the judging panel with me were Seattle's own DJ
B-Mello (KEXP/KUBE), Breez Evaflowin',
Jake One & Portland's own Cool Nutz!...
While I was up in
Seattle,
I got a chance to go into the lab & host DJ R-Sin's
new mix cd "MixSession Volume One" droppin' next
week! It felt good to get back on the M.I.C. & of course
my pare' ripped it on the wheels. Stay tuned... One of
the biggest highlights of my trip was hangin' out with
my Gung-Fu teacher & father figure, Sifu Taky Kimura
& his son, Andy at their place & hearing my
Sifu reminice about his days with Bruce Lee in
the 60's. Unforgettable. He's such a special person in
my life & I owe a lot of my success & humbleness to
him... I also got to visit Bruce & Brandon Lee's
gravesite & brought X-104's J-Tyme, DJ
Earthquake from Live365.com & KUBE's DJ R-Sin
with me... Seatown's King Of Ghetto Fab, Gene Dexter
threw me a surprise "Welcome Home" party at Vito's
which was hella cool! My dawg since he was 11 years old,
Mr Supreme was droppin' the needle on the new ish
& the classics all night! Thanks to Keek Loc for
the hospitality... What made this trip even extra
special was hangin' with my peeps who I grew up with,
Ihab Guindi, Brett Carlson, ShockMaster
Glen Boyd, Harris Francis from KUBE 93,
Terri Marisol, Sheila & Carson Locke &
my blood brother, Pastor William "Butch"
Johnson... I was able to live out my food fantasy
while in Seattle eating at my favorite spots, "Sun Ya,"
"Taco Time," "Uwajimaya" & "Dicks!"... I feel very
thankful & blessed that even though it's been 24 years
since I first introduced Seattle to Hip-Hop, I still get
a lot of love & respect when I go home. Now that's love
& I praise God everyday for that & more!... I
also want to shout out the following heads outta the
"206" who I got to see; JFK, TopSpin,
Byrdie, Kitman, Seron & Cloe Simeon,
DJ Chameleon, Sifu John Leong, DJ
Punish, Dow Jones, Crazy Legs from
Rock Steady, Kitty Woo (CoolOut TV),
Hill-B, Broadie Kimura & from Cincinatti,
Art Williams!... I'LL BE BACK :)
SHOUT OUT TIZIME:
Happy
belated birthday to DJ Splif, Happy b'day
(9/8/04) to Kate Livingston of WOZQ in
MA.& Happy 9/9 b'day to Baby-C!
PEACE, LOVE & HIP-HOP UNITY (God Bless & Isa Mahal),
