[[ October 18, 2004  ]]

What's upper! We did it & thanks to you, "H.U.S.T.L.E. 2004" was a success. Last weeks' conference in the Big Apple will forever be etched as one of my most memorable moments in Hip-Hop. I was chillin' at P. Diddy's spot Justin's where Teflon Records thru down with a first class affair, our daytime panels featured some of the best of the best sharing their experiences in the music biz from Rosa Clemente, Jeremy Glicks, DJ Kut (NY's Power 105), Davey-D (AOL Radio & KPFA in Oakland), The Wonder Twinz (Sirius), G-Brown (Mixtapes-Brooklyn), DJ Yoshi, Nathan Sheard (Sony Urban), Guru (Gang Starr), Fiona B., Dru Ha (Duck Down), Kev Brown, Ken Starr & Ernie Paniccioli & our nightime showcases have heads still talkin' about what went down. Here's a lil' run down from Rap Attack's own DJ Kristyles (717HipHop.com) on what you missed last week:

"When seven DJ's from all parts of the country shacks up in a one room studio hotel, with one bathroom & one bed to attend the most anticipated event this year for college radio DJ's, sounds like something from the "Real World" starring Nasty-Nes aka DJ Cock Blocker, DJ Kazzeo aka DJ GrandMaster Kaz, DJ Jason D aka Larry is the White Guy, DJ J-Tyme aka Hellen Keller, DJ Chill Will aka Barry White, Nick Huff aka The Intellgent Hoodlum and of course your truly DJ Kristyles aka DJ I'm Black and I'm Proud! "H.U.S.T.L.E. 2004" is officially over & is now in the Hip-Hop history books. I took the train to NYC from PA. for the "RapAttacklives.com presents: H.U.S.T.L.E.  2004 Conference" & my anticipation for the upcoming events was on overload, Thursday Night, October 14th @ Club Opaline was like seeing history in the making, Hosted by none other than the sickest female on the turntables, Kuttin Kandi. This event showcased up and coming artist such as Frank White, Dirty Rat featuring from Tha Liks, Tash, Storm The Unpredictable and Bugsy & Snakes. Each artist performed well doing the sets, but the energy was building for the featured acts: Jean Grae, Smif n Wessun and Sean Price. Jean Grae by far in my opinion is the sickest female emcee out now. Matter of fact she's hotter then 75% of male emcees out there . Jean Grae blessed us with a spirited show at Club Opaline. She showed why she's a force to be reckoned with by taking control of the lethargic crowd and calling out all the Hip-Hop heads closer to the stage. After Jean Grae I thought it couldn't get any better but I was wrong. I was only expecting Smif n Wessun and Sean Price to perform but to my surprise the whole Boot Camp Clik was in the building. BlackMoon, Heltah Skeltah, Ruste Juxx & OGC! This was the hottest show thus far I have seen this year. The Boot Camp Clik took us through history with classics like " I Got U Open" and cutz from Smif n Wessun's classic debut album "Da Shinin." Basically they shut the whole venue down with their memorable performance. Friday Night's Show, October 15th @ Club Shelter was hosted by the one and only (me) DJ Kristyles and former Nastymix Recording artist & the emcee for the late & great, DJ Whiz Kid Y.S.L. (see photos above). This show featured Jus Allah of Jedi Minds, Dres of Black Sheep,The Unusual Suspects, Jeru the Damaja, Guru of Gang Starr and Comp. The audience was also blessed with an army of DJ's including DJ Yoshi, DJ Kut, DJ Chela, DJ Kuttin Kandi and DJ Evil Dee of the Beatminerz. The whole atmosphere was off the hook. Jus Allah hit the stage and graced the stage with his lyrical prowess, Comp showed us what Def Jam recording has in the future, Telfon Musik's The Unusual Suspects featuring Jinx Da Juvy, Slash and Ike Dirty had a very energetic show, performing hits from their debut album, Dres of Black Sheep took us thru classic hits and new songs from the upcoming Black Sheep album due out in 2005. A true Hip-Hop artist performing for the love of the music & not the money is Guru of Gang Starr who proved that point, even with a thinning crowd as the clock was slowly approaching 4AM, Guru rocked the show like their was 100,000 screaming and shouting fans in the house! We saw the legend rocking cutz like "Take It Personal," "Mass Appeal" & songs from his upcoming release on his 7 Grand label "Cave In" & "Surviving The Game." Jeru the Damaja sporting a new clean shaven look went through his arsenal of classic such as "Playing Ya Self," "Can't Stop The Prophet" and the classic banger "Come Clean."  The memorable part of the night was DJ Evil Dee with a few heads still in the building,  Evil Dee rocked the house on a pair of cdj's with classic cutz ranging from the year 1985 to 1993!  H.U.S.T.L.E. 2004 was a huge success & no doubt the talk of this years' Fall 2004 event in the NYC! Special thanks goes out to Nasty-Nes, EQ and David Muhammad for bringing  true Hip-Hop to the college radio DJ's! With the exception of my snoring & waking up my roomies early in the AM, I had a great time and expect a bigger and better event next year. Thanks for a great time Nes, J-Tyme, Jason D, Kazzeo, Chill Will, NIck Huff, Y.S.L. & everyone I ran into in NY. See you all next year!"...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with: Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Random thoughts for this week:
1. Although I cannot wait to see the Sox replay the Yankees, I cannot get over the sickening feeling that my heart will once again be ripped out and stepped on.
2. Somehow I get the feeling that presidential debate spectators don't truly make up the questions that they read aloud, since they nervously stumble over the words    like Corky Thatcher after a couple of Olde English 800s...
3. The new Nas and his pops single is corny enough to make Santa Claus himself vomit with rage.
4. I guess we won't see another Public Enemy album, because how could Chuck D even lower himself to working again with Flav after "The Surreal Life".
5. You know we live in strange times when VH1 has more Hip-Hop credibility than MTV.
6. You know we live in strange times when my beloved NY Giants have a better record than most teams in the NFL.
7. Despite being a longtime and diehard Mobb Deep fan, I've come to the sad conclusion that "Amerikaz Nightmare" is by far their worst album.
8. For a retired guy, Jay-Z is pretty busy. And the new 12" with R. Kelly doesn't just miss the target. It's not even in the shooting range"... DJ Solo (WECI-Indiana): "Much love to VH-1, the Hip Hop Honors was LAVA!!! Why it took so long??? Still remains a mystery. MTV could not step up and do what’s right so VH-1 held us down. Today’s youth needs to know what inspired us, so they can respect the culture and not the bling of what it has turned into today. Great news for me, I will be on a trip to Indy for a job interview. Is it time to relocate? Numbers will decide that. Will I still be on the radio, most likely, will it be @ WECI probably. If not that means the creator wants me to move on. So if I move, beware Topspeed I’ll be like Qbert was to Mixmaster Mike and bite every scratch you do, just kidding"... Karam (CKRK-Toronto): " Peep out some pictures from my trip to Lebanon here at: http://ca.msnusers.com/KaramDebly/shoebox.msnw.
The Consequence and John Legend show on Sunday was incredible. What adifference the venue makes. The MOD Club has the best sound in the city. Kanye West came out on stage for his verse on "Spaceship" during Consequence's show and for his verse on a piano-based version of "Selfish" during John Legend's performance. Am I the only person who doesn't care about the US presidential debates and election? Even Canadians are following it closely like it matters. Bush vs. Bush Lite"... Kevin Sakoda (KSPC-CA): " Effective here's Kev's new contact info;
3100 North Frederic Street, Burbank, CA 91504... email: kevinsakoda@charter.net... cell #: (818) 324-0204"...
