Commercial Radio, "MUSIC MEDIA" will do the same for
College Radio. This way we can detect if they are
playing the records they are charting & it'll help bring
more respect for us to the record labels & retail!...

Last
Saturday, January 8th I witnessed history as Jam
Master Jay's "Scratch Academy" which debuted in New
York, opened up their Los Angeles headquarters inside
West L.A.'s Rehab Records! It was like a who's
who in the house with L.A.'s Choc (Power 106)
on the wheels & a grip of dj's & turntables in the bldg.
ready to teach others the art of turntablism! One of the
biggest highlights for me being their was reuniting with
former NWA member, the Arabian Prince. Him
& I go back 20 years to when him & Dre was with
the Wrekin' Cru & we (Sir Mix-A-Lot) all
flew to London together back in 1985 to perform at
London's Hip-Hop Fresh Fest! Just to let you know,
Arabian Prince & Egyptian Lover are both comin'
out with some new real "Techno Hip-Hop" ish & will be a
big part of educationg dj's at L.A.'s "Scratch Academy!"
Here's a lil' history on L.A.'s "Scratch
Academy":Scratch DJ Academy, the first ever DJ Academy
to feature copy written curriculum and hands-on
turntable training from celebrity DJ's, is opening its
first location outside of New York City. Scratch DJ
Academy – Los Angeles will open its doors to the public
on Saturday January 15th, 2005. The Los
Angeles location’s first semester will feature the same
ground breaking curriculum, lesson plans, instructional
LP’s, professional teachers and class offerings made
famous at the New York City headquarters. Scratch DJ
Academy – LA will be opening inside of the premier
record store, Rehab Records, located at 2324 Cotner
Street. The classes will feature celebrity DJ’s such as
Mr. Choc (Power 106 and Rawkus Records recording
artist), Jahi Sundance, DJ Tony Naranjo
and others. Students will be taught on eight DJ set ups
featuring sixteen turntables. Classes will be part
lecture and part lab.Scratch DJ Academy- LA’s first
semester will run from January 15th to
February 23rd, with classes meeting every Saturday
afternoon and Wednesday evening. There are three skill
levels available for enrollment: DJ 101 (Beginners), DJ
151 (Intermediate Mixing) and DJ 202 (Intermediate
Scratching). Scratch DJ Academy – LA is located at 2324
Cotner Street in West Los Angeles and has a limited
number of spots available for the upcoming semester.
Private one-on-one lessons with celebrity DJ's are also
available during the week and weekend."Scratch's goal is
to lower the barrier to entry for those interested in
this pop culture phenomenon and art form,” noted Rob
Principe, President & CEO, Scratch DJ
Academy. “We are proud to be opening a location within
Rehab Records which has demonstrated its commitment to
the DJ community in California and beyond.” “We plan to
educate beginners and professional DJ’s through a
curriculum that treats the turntable as an instrument
and the DJ as a musician, allowing students of all ages
and backgrounds to bring their own creativity to the art
form,” added Hapa, Academy Director for
the Los Angeles location. In early 2002, Rob Principe,
the late Jam Master Jay from Run DMC (Jason
Mizell) and Reg E. Gaines (author, Bring
in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk) created the Scratch
DJ Academy® to educate amateur DJ's and enthusiasts by
providing them with the necessary equipment and
instruction to learn this popular art form. For more

Is tragedy the success
formula for Dr. Dre and G Unit? As we know
there are plenty of troubled souls that reside on the
G Unit's label and clique. Those souls have
managed to reveal their pain and captivate an audience
of millions, turning them into multi-platinum artists.
How is Game any different? Let's face it the Game's
Documentary is set to be one of the most revealing pages
in G Unit's history book. He was ripped from his mother
from an early age, and his life of 17 years in a foster
care was certainly no walk in the park, while trying to
come to terms with a father that tore his family apart
by molesting his sister, fighting the adversities in the
streets, surviving a bullet lodged in his heart, after
all this Dr. Dre found him in the bowels of Compton,
with pen and pad in hand and no way out. ironically
enough Dr. Dre's way back home to Compton gave Game his
way out. Alas, Game can tell his story of triumph as all
the others. Yet the biggest victory ever to accomplish
in his life, becomes quickly overshadowed with the
untimely death of his sole best friend: Billboard.
Almost unable to go on, this bittersweet victory casts a
shadow on his ability to ever truly celebrate. Game's
story is a story that many would only feel comfortable
grazing on the surface, but Game comes face to face with
demons that so many Hip Hop artists mask by providing
simple shoot em up bang bang "macho lyrics" and never
telling the audience where that pain stems from. Game
doesn't mask any of his feelings, he is an open book for
the world to see, and he exposes the pain that every
American family really faces, in fact its an epidemic of
pain that happens all across the globe. Shemia Miller
of BWS reveals "The Documentary has been
coined as a street collector's item, and although it is
gritty, Game still only scratches the surface of what he
can truly offer, I think everyone will want more, like a
volume 2 of some sorts. I know I do." The Game's
Documentary comes January 18th, 2005, and already the
streets are anticipating this CD to be the one that
gives mouth to mouth resuscitation to the WEST. A heavy
burden that this artist didn't ask to carry, but he is
certainly willing to do what it takes to show the world
that West Coast artists are indeed universal. We hope
that not only is life given back, but West Coast artists
are taken seriously, with Game. Although he didnt ask to
be this a martyr ,he exposes himself in order to help
save other lost souls. Everyone has a documentary, a
life story, Game tells us his, but on January 18th we
cant help but look at our own lives rather we want to or
not. He doesn't apologize, so why should we? Log on to
The Black Wall Street to find out more
information about how Game known as Jayceon Taylor
started his company and his legacy-The Black Wall

Angie
Hunt
(Teflon
Muzik): " Happy New Year to each and every one of
you struggling back from a hopefully safe and happy
holiday. In light of the recent tsunami disaster in
Southeast Asia, Teflon Muzik would like to encourage
each and every college DJ to make a contribution to one
of the agencies collecting for the disaster relief
effort. Whether it be the Red Cross or Save
the Children or AmeriCares, Teflon Muzik will
match the first $5.00 of your contribution sent to a
reputable agency. You may have already made a
contribution or be thinking about making another one. To
have your first $5.00 matched by Teflon Muzik just send
your DJ name, call letters and the agency to which you
made your contribution to Angie at
greatbrit5@aol.com. (you do not have to
disclose the total amount of your contribution) & Teflon
Muzik will gather up the names, match the first $5.00 of
the total number of names and send a check to The Red
Cross on your behalf. This disaster may very well fall
off the front pages as soon as the Michael Jackson
case (or something similarly important) goes to
trial. Teflon Muzik ask that you remember that the
relief needed is not temporary and that long term
efforts are required to help the people of these nations
rebuild their lives. The following link is a list of

Tsunami disaster. The "Relief & Recovery" event
will begin at 11:00 PM on Wednesday January 12, 2005
at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette Street, NYC, a long
established part of the exciting, culturally rich, and
happening downtown entertainment district that makes New
York City the truly special place it is.Remy
Ma, the female voice of the summer’s hottest song,
“Lean Back,” and a member of Fat Joe’s Terror
Squad, has taken time out of her busy schedule (she
is currently working on her debut solo album, ”There's
Something About Remy: Based on a True Story,” due out in
the spring) to host the evenings event.
Headlining the performances
are M.O.P.

to show love and support for the victims of this great
tragedy." The
"Relief and Recovery!" event is open to
the public, so feel free to bring along friends and
colleagues and let others know about it. Over 350+
people are expected to come out and support what will be
a dynamic event for a very necessary cause. A minimum

of people that receives necessary assistance, to
increase awareness among the community and support the
organization that serves them. JOE’S PUB will donate

Musiklee Inzane
(CKLN-Toronto):
" Before the holiday's I said I had some big news, well
here it is. After 13 years of college radio the Real
Frequency show is moving onto commercial radio. We are
moving over to Toronto's only urban station, FLOW
93.5 FM (CFXJ), Mondays11PM - 1AM. They are
going on their 4th year in T.O. Nothing changes with the
format, it's sill raw Hip Hop, basically it's our
college format on commercial radio. So don't stop
sending us the heat. It's an opportunity to expose even
more people to the music we love. They want to start us
the end of January so we only have about 3 weeks left at
CKLN. I know we give up some of the freedom's of college
but, we're excited to see how much further we can take
this...
Mike
"Oz" Osegueda (formerly with KFSR
in Fresno, CA): " It's a new year and unfortunately
for me, college radio is not going to be a part of it.
I've really
felt out of the radio loop for a good part of the last
year (many of you might have noticed) and I've decided
to put a close on this chapter in my life. Things in the
rest of my life are picking up. My job at the newspaper
is awesome. I've become a columnist now. Other aspects
of my life are picking up and radio really has just
taken a backseat. It's been a good run, though. I
wouldn't trade the memories for anything, but it's not
the right time in my life anymore. So thanks to everyone
who was always so helpful to me. Just to name a few:
Papa D, Jess, Mick Boogie, Nes,
Alma, ID and everyone else. It's been a great
learning experience and a lot of fun working with ya'll.
I hope the best to everyone in 05 and in the future.
I'll still have this email if you want to get at me for
any reason. You can always find my work at
www.fresnobee.com/columnists/osegueda. It's not
all Hip-Hop related, but I touch on it sometimes. Peace
everybody...

Feb. 2004- The Source
Magazine reaches an
all time low as Ray Benzino
announces that all Source subscriptions will now be
accompanied by a Benzino CD. Or as Benzino puts it
"My CDs come with a free
subscription. Don't get it twisted. I ship 1 million
units a month. Let's see Eminem beat that"
Mar. 2004- The United States military
proudly announces the capture of
Osama Bin Laden. After
intelligence led troops to the cave Osama was hiding in,
U.S. forces were able to flush him out by playing the
new Bravehearts album
on "repeat" at nauseating volumes.
"I have to admit" a
captured Osama admitted, "that
everytime I heard that
Lil Jon song I wanted to
put the barrel of my AK-47 in my f*cking mouth"
Apr. 2004- Hot off the success of
Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,
Outkast announce that
their next effort would be exclusively produced by
Yoko Ono &
Marilyn Manson.
Filmaker David Lynch
has signed on to produce a DVD documenting the historic
recording sessions. "It's the
only way we could figure out to make our sh*t more
weird" noted Andre
3000.
May 2004- Reality TV hits a new low as FOX
introduces "Who Wants To Release An Album?". The

Ras Kass and
Death Row Records, are
at a hopeless stalemate.
June 2004- Hip Hop romantics everywhere are
saddened by the announcement that
Janet Jackson has cut
ties with boy-toy Jermaine
Dupri. When asked where the relationship went
sour, Dupri lamented "I guess
the roofies finally wore off."
July 2004- Jay-Z
announces his return to hip hop after his deep dismay at
the seemingly endless bootleg remixes of his "Black
Album". The straw that breaks the camel's back is a disc
by composer Andrew Lloyd Weber
that hits the streets entitled "Jay-Z: 'The Baroque
Album'"
Aug. 2004- Tired of being ridiculed by his
disgustingly rich son, Bam,
beloved TV Dad Phil Margera

replace the portly patriarch.
Sept. 2004- After his last album "The

G-Unit's seemingly unstoppable reign at the top
ends as fans decide to pass on their Thanksgiving themed
new album "Beg For Turkey".
Dec. 2004- Bad luck also strikes the
Ed-G Unit, as the new
Edgie Cent album "Sh*ttin'
On The Game" is pulled from stores everywhere after
shoppers complain that the album cover is obscene. An
unnamed Best Buy employee comments that
"somehow the image of a guy
with his pants around his ankles copping a squat over a
Monopoly board just rubbed consumers the wrong way..."
