Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

DJ S.A. (KHQT-New Mexico): Rap Attack goes one on one with our ese' outta NM:

DJ SA: I was born in Wyoming and raised in El Paso, TX. I grew up in the Eisenhower pj's in Northeast. DJ SA stands for Spanish Aztec aka Still Alive aka Spinnin' Again.

How long have you been mixing?

DJ SA: Since I was about 15 years old off and on. But just recently for the time I been on air is when I started to get back into it. I use to do house parties, spinnin at clubs in Juarez and El Paso and I also did some air time at 107.5 Vida with Dangerous Danny. The first time I ever did a house party was back in the 80's, a friend of mine had me bring a few records and a turntable, and I had no idea why. That day though, he school'd me to the art of mixing. It was on a Thomas Turntable, a Fisher Turntable and a Realistic mixer that I bought at the pawn shop. It was actually a house party in his garage, sghetto maghetto style. Since I was broke than a mofo and livin in the pj days, I got a lot of my equipment at the the pawn shop on Dyer Street by a Pizza Hut. I took over some Alexander Oneal, some Run DMC, some Steve Silk Hurley, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Tom Tom Club, Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, Just Ice, Davey DMX, Cold Crush Brothers, Fat Boys stuff like that.

In 98' I had a real bad car accident that put me in a wheel chair that I'm still currently trying to get out of. Since I got disabled through my feet I'm workin on other skills with my hands cause thats basically what I got to work with right now. That my turntables and my records. I'd like to thank my homie Mando Gonzalez for lending me all of the equipment that I use to own and helping me to hold it down here at KRUX. And also big thanks to Lee, Kawzmatik, Mista and Asylum for hookin me up with the KRUX network. It's really got me back to life. I been bummin' for a minute but its good to be back in the mix. Anybody that needs a skilled dj out there, thats not sheisty and that aint afraid to share the wealth, get at me on my email address.

Being that you got some listening experience with music in general, what is your opinion on radio as you hear it from radio stations in your town?

DJ SA: To tell you the truth, the only true dj's anymore, are the ones holding it down underground cause everybody else is about the money and dont really care about what they play anymore. Which is what its really all about now is that dollar, but when it comes to selling out it aint about that for me. I try to keep it as real as I can and never forget what I came up on. Even though my homies forgot me thats all good. I got new homies and like it saids in the good book, if God is for me who could be against me. Thats one of my favorite sayings.

I'd like to send a big shout to all the dj's that I use to hang out with. To all the people that bought my mixtapes over at One World Style in El Paso, TX. To DJ Mark X, DJ Juan Rojas, DJ Dangerous Danny, DJ Mando Get Down Gonzalez, DJ DVS 1, DJ De Ja Vu, DJ Match, DJ Ray Vargaz, DJ J Smooth, DJ Sonic Lord Vadar the Wonder Twinz and DJ Slomotion, DJ Metronix, DJ Rob One, DJ Q and also big ups to the people who inspired me and made me get off my ass and try to do somethin with my hands. DJ QBert, DJ Craze, DJ Ztrip, DJ Swamp, DJ Babu, DJ Flare, DJ Shadow, DJ Revolution, DJ Spinbad, DJ Juice, DJ King of the Cutz, the Beatjunkies, the Crash Dummies, the Invisible Skratch Pickelz, MixMaster Mike, DJ Premier and all the other dirt style cats that I forgot.

Mainstream radio, I dont have no quams with it, but people need to get off that plain ass same song over and over all at the same time stuff. They need to become more flavorfull. They got to give the listeners more to choose from then just the same ole, same ole. Everything goes back to the roots, and if you cant find something to play that you have for nowadays, go back to the old school. Everything is based off that except maybe the crunk shit which really dont catch my ear and kinda makes me want to turn off the radio since thats all I hear now. I just put on the headphones and scratch to my own sick wit it.

Tell us about Friday Night Flava Funk.

DJ SA: Its a show that I put together off of the wall cause I was notified about it after I started guest spottin on with the Unified Rebellion show. I really appreciate the slot cause its all about the love of music. I try to bring something that isnt being played on the other stations so that people will tune in and keep listening on a consistent basis for something new. Might not be new but at least something you aint heard in a while. Something to bring back a memory of that time that you were just chuck chillin' with your homies or your girl or hanging out at a party. Back in the days we use to have some PARTIES. but because of all the nonsense thats limited now days.

The show comes on Friday nights around the late pm-am hours with guest spot Lee. Stay tuned, listen and hit me back with some feedback, request or just hit me off with an email just to say whats up.

What's your opinion on mixtapes today?

DJ SA: Lately I havent really been checkin for mixtapes except for the ones I put togehter or the ones Kawzmatik puts together. I've also been focusing more on the family so I havent really checked for any. If theres any dj's out there that would like feedback on their tapes, get at me so I can check em out.

Well, as for some mixtapes though, I do listen to the Beat Junkies, Invisible Skratch Picklz, DJ Craze and all sorts of different flavors.

What plans do you have with your turntables in the future?

DJ SA: I'd like to get into making beats, scratchin with some hip hop groups or open up for some bands or somethin just to make some cash in a positive light. I'd like to use and enhance my skills to the fullest and keep it authentic, that means real not ill.

Anything else you'd like to mention?

DJ SA: I'd like to thank Kawzmatik for opening up the doors to the folks here at KRUX, my wife for most of all, for putting up with and having to lug my big ass around everywhere, and holdin the crib and my son and just being here for me for whatever I need. My family also, my little sister, my stepdad, my grandma, and the people around the way here at KRUX. Lee of course, for opening a spot and giving me a chance to let me show the skillz. I want to tell everyone that listens to keep up, keep real, and keep positive. Thanks for tunin in if you catchin the show, thanks for checkin me out, one love, music DJ SA, Spanish Aztec in full effect. Holdin it down in the Southwest desert land.

Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): " OKAY SO HERE'S MY RANT FOR THIS WEEK. RECENTLY I LEARNED OF A CERTAIN PROMOTER TALKING SHIT ABOUT MYSELF AND JASON D. FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD, THE STORY GOES LIKE THIS. A FRIEND OF BOTH JASON AND MYSELF RELEASED A RECORD. THIS FRIEND OF OURS IS WELL KNOWN IN THE HIP HOP GAME AS A DJ AND PRODUCER. WHILE IT WASN'T HIS EXACT INTENTION TO ACTIVELY WORK THE RELEASE TO RADIO, HE DID SO IN MINIMAL MANNER. HE CHOSE TO HIRE THE SAID PROMOTER TO DISTRIBUTE X AMOUNT OF COPIES OF THE RECORD TO DJ'S WHO IT WAS FELT WOULD APPRECIATE IT THE MOST. HIS ONLY INSISTENCE ON THE PROJECT WAS THAT JASON & MYSELF WERE TO BE INCLUDED IN THIS LIST OF DJ'S WHO GOT THE RECORD. WHEN THE REQUEST WAS MADE BY OUR FRIEND, THE PROMOTER RESPONDED BY SAYING "JASON D ? HE'S NOT EVEN ON THE RADIO ANYMORE" AND "NO ONE LISTENS TO KAZZEO'S LITTLE STATION". FOR THE RECORD, JASON D IS STILL ACTIVELY ON THE RADIO AND ABOUT TO MAKE SOME SERIOUS MOVES. MORE INFO TO COME. AS FAR AS MY LITTLE STATION GOES, WELL IF COVERING A 100 MILE RADIUS OF CENTRAL CALI AND REACHING BETWEEN 20 & 25 THOUSAND LISTENERS WEEKLY IS LITTLE, SO BE IT. JASON & I ARE THE ONLY, I REPEAT THE ONLY SOURCE FOR TRUE HIP HOP ON THE CENTRAL COAST OF CALI DURING THE WEEK AND IF YOU WANT TO DIS WHAT WE PROVIDE TO THE EA BEHIND OUR BACK WHILE YOU SMILE IN OUR FACE, ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS "FUCK YOU"...

Ahsan "The Golden Child" (WRSU-NJ): " I'm sending this out because there are a number of joints that we do not have and are unable to play and chart. I'm still receiving mail from some of you but not all. There was a problem with our mail late 2004 but this was fixed early 2005. If you didn't know we are still on the air 10 years strong. The show still has loyal and growing fan base, plus we're very active and involved with local retailers in the surrounding areas. Below is all my information, if you don't have or lost it:

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday. I was stuck at work during Live 8 and the Welcome America stuff in Philly. The shows were cool Kanye West, Will Smith and Jay-Z all repped. Stevie Wonder by far was the higlight. RIP to Luther Vandross, one of the great voices of our time, among some of my favorites were"Here and Now," " Give Me the Reason," " There's Nothing Better Than Love" (with Gregory Hines) and a track I don't hear people talk about but was classic was "I'm Gonna Miss You In The Morning" (with Patti Austin and Qunicy Jones). The Phils are the Phils can't wait for football season. I will be at Rocksteady at the end of this month so I hope to see alot of people in NY. Out or now peace"...

Brian Zishook (WZND-IL): " What's Good Fam, I know everybody had an exciting weekend for the 4th. The Chi was jumping so hard for the holidays with the club scene, fireworks, and the Taste of Chicago... so what I heard. I WASN'T ON NOFIN!!! I've been working like a slave in a banana plantation (Panamanians picked fruit instead of cotton...lol j/k). Anyways here's the Taste of Hip Hop for this week. Keep them records coming and I'll keep em spinning. Check out Allhiphop.com's interview with new artist Freddie Gibbs... "Z" is mentioned in the interview: http://www.allhiphop.com/BreedingGround/?ID=62 * Feel like talking music? Hit me up whenever cause I just love this rap game and the culture that is Hip Hop. ***BIG UPS*** Cherie B w/ Addicted 4 Life, Sonny D @ Capitol, Sean @ Koch, & Def Jam (Their so hot right now) R.I.P.
