A Few Things to Ponder: Afrika Bambaataa
Speaks on Hip Hop, Katrina and Race (see photo
above)
by Davey D
The other day in
Los Angeles,
we sat down with the Godfather of Hip Hop Culture DJ
Afrika Bambaataa to get his thoughts on the state of Hip
Hop and the Katrina aftermath. Bam who is always ahead
of his time spoke passionately and at length about a
number of topics ranging from Global Warming, our
collective spirituality, world poverty, Black-Brown
tensions, the Millions More Movement and the erasing of
the Hip Hop’s pioneering era from history. To say the
least the conversation was engaging and worthwhile.
To peep the entire 50-minute interview you can download
it here…
http://odeo.com/audio/229579/view
Here's the Afrika Bambaataa interviews in shorter
segments..
pt-1)
http://odeo.com/audio/229580/view
pt-2)
http://odeo.com/audio/229590/view
For your convenience we broke the interview up into
several parts. Below is a rundown of what is in each
section…
Afrika Bambaataa pt 1
Here Bam starts off talking about the current state of
the world in the aftermath of Katrina. He notes that
there are a small group of people who control most of
the world’s resources and riches and that their behavior
suggests that they are Luciferians. In other words these
are evil people who want to control everyone and
everything. He says many of these individuals have
fallen from the grace of the supreme spirit.
Bambaataa addressed the question regarding Hip Hop and
its current state and whether or not it was doing all
that it could do. Bam felt that there’s a major split
within Hip Hop. He says there are those who follow the
dictates of the Rap Music Industry and those who follow
the dictates of Hip Hop culture. This split has resulted
in millionaire rappers NOT thinking about ‘nation-time’.
Instead they focus only on themselves.
He says we are suffering from the ‘I’ syndrome and not
embracing the ‘Us’ syndrome. Bam says unfortunately
money and the glitz and glamour of the industry have
become their God. It’s not about community for many
within the industry. It’s all about the Benjamins.
Bam also talked about the role so called Hip Hop radio
stations play in furthering this rap music industry
ideology. He noted how many of these stations have
narrowly defined Hip Hop by limited the styles of music
and even subject matter that gets on the airwaves. At
the end of the day this results in all of us having a
misunderstanding of what Hip Hop truly is all about. It
also helps keep the masses in a state of ignorance.
[Song Break]
Bambaataa spoke more directly about the situation
surrounding Hurricane Katrina. He noted that he wasn’t
surprised and he and the Universal Zulu Nation had been
saying it was just a matter of time before this was
going to happen. Bam said that are disrespect for the
planet and global warming were early indicators. He also
spoke about the predictions of Nastradamus who spoke
about floods and earthquakes impacting our world. He
also pointed out this constant theme of the world’s
destruction as depicted in popular movies like ‘I Robot’
and the ‘Day After Tomorrow’ . Bam also noted that we
should not put it past this Luciferians class of people
to fool around and try and manipulate whether conditions
themselves. This would be done to keep people scared and
ultimately under control…
Bam expanded upon this by talking more in-depth about
the ruling families of the world and how they are all
closely linked even if they appear to be far apart and
on opposite sides of the political spectrum. He said
many of them practice within the occultist movement.
When asked if everything was hopeless… Bambaataa noted
that we would always have a ying and a yang to deal
with. He said we have to look at everything from a
historical perspective. This constant struggle of good
vs. evil goes all the way back to Biblical times and all
the way back to ancient Kemet.
Bam focuses some more on Kemet (ancient Egypt). He also
talks about the migration of the Moors and Omex people
to the Americas and our relationship with native
Americans.
=================================================
Afrika Bambaataa pt2
Afrika Bambaataa responded to the question I posed about
whether or not we could trust the system we live up
under. Bam says that we must be aware of the divide and
conquer practices within the Willie Lynch syndrome (a
technique used to keep slaves in check).. He says we
must get back to our spirituality. He said that we need
to follow the advice of the late Kwame Toure and join an
organization to help bring about unity in our respective
communities.
Bam went on to talk about the Black-Brown tensions in
cities like Los Angeles. He noted that there’s been a
lot of confusion and that much of this has to do with
Willie Lynch syndrome and White world supremacy, which
strives to keep us divided and going at each other.. Bam
went on to note that many Latinos have African roots so
its confusing that there would be any sort of tension.
He said its important for people not to get caught up in
the language of their oppressor (Spanish-English) but to
focus on who and what we really are… Bam also said he
wants to start doing more interviews in Latin magazine
and radio shows to express this unity and bring some of
these points to light.
Bam also talked about today’s current leadership,
especially within the Black community. He said that many
leaders are puppets who are scared of the government and
concerned about getting their next paycheck. He noted
that true leaders are not afraid to take a stand and
even die for a cause. He quoted Sly Stone’s record
‘Stand’. Bam went on to add that many leaders
deliberately keep important information and knowledge
from the people.
Bam also went on to talk about the deeper meaning behind
many of his albums. For example, in his latest album
Dark Matter focuses on the Melanite people and Melanin
that has been studied for years by scientist. Other
albums have focused on mind control and media
manipulation.
Bam also spoke about ways that we can increase
consciousness in Hip Hop. He re-emphasized that we all
need to organize. He spoke about us utilizing the
churches and mosques in our community to set up
distribution channels. He said that that amongst the
conscious artists they tend to do too much on their own
and if we are not careful, they will get overwhelmed,
brought out and shut down. Bam restated the importance
of going to the Million More Movement in DC this October
.He also said its important for us to pool our money and
spend within the community.
Bam talked again about white world supremacy and Hip Hop
and the role white people play within Hip Hop. He spoke
about the diversity within Hip Hop and said it was good
thing and that the Zulu nation has international
chapters and wants everyone from all races to join. He
said its extremely important that we all make an attempt
to know about each others backgrounds and history so we
can better know each other and foster better
relationships.
Bam spoke about international Hip Hop and stated that
many people outside the US take Hip Hop very seriously
and show deeper appreciation for the cultural aspects of
it.
He said that its important to note how within the rock
community they embrace older cats like Mick Jagger but
within Hip Hop you rarely see that exchange or
appreciation except on the west coast where many artists
collab with funk pioneers. He also spoke about how many
people are trying to re-write Hip Hop’s history and in
doing so exclude the Universal Zulu Nation. He talked
about the year 1986 when there seemed to be a changing
of the guard. Def Jam and Russell Simmons came into
prominence and re-defined Hip Hop by discounting Hip
Hop’s pioneers...
