What's upper? One of the best new TV shows that I highly
recommend you to peep out is MTV's newest
reality show, "Run's House." Some people have referred
to it as the black version of the "Osbournes" but
I can compare it to "The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air 2005" &
it is real, no acting or scripts. Af ter peeping the
first episode of "Run's House" & the previews to next
weeks show, it is refreshing to see a very positive type
of show on tv that will relate to the young and over 40
demographics. Watch it, Thursday nights on MTV...
DJ's
can relate to what I'm about to talk about & I hope
those that read this can help our fellow brother in
Hip-Hop out. Last Saturday night, our fam DJ B-Mello
from
Seattle's
KUBE 93 got all his records stolen. Here's what
he wrote me: "Yo fam, all my records were stolen
last night.. Club/radio ones.. All my classic stuff from
all the years too. 3 flight cases and 3 big bags. Like
400-500 all good stuff. I'm wiped out like katrina hit.
Cancelled the radio this week. Don't know what I'm gonna
do., B-Mello." In a situation like this, we all
need to bond together & help out a fellow DJ. If you
have any extra vinyl, new and/or old, please send it to:
14300
32nd Avenue NE, # 503... Seattle, WA
98125...
Props
to Def Jam for sponsoring last weeks RAP
ATTACK CONFERENCE CALL as Ghostface Killah
chilled with our dj's for about 20 minutes & dropped
all kinds of Hip-Hop knowledge on us. His latest single
"Be Easy" is getting a lot of love from our RAP
ATTACK reporters & he did say that it was because of
College radio that got both him & the Wu-Tang where
they're at now. Ghostface also mentioned that comparing
the new Hip-Hop music that's dropping today to the
oldschool, the fun in Hip-Hop music is gone...

TO PEEP OUT MYSPACE.COM's DJ PAGE. I WAS
CHOSEN AS THEIR FEATURED DJ FOR THE WEEK & HERE'S THE
INTERVIEW!
MySpace.com has chosen
Seattle’s
legendary Nasty-Nes to be apart of the exclusive "MySpace.com
Official DJs". Staff and users had a chance to ask the
talented Nasty-Nes a few questions.
1.
How long have you been djing and what inspired you to
start?
I
started DJ'ing back in 1979 right outta my senior year
in highschool. What inspired me was my hairdresser who's
brother, Ed Locke dj'd on Seattle's only R&B radio
station, 1250 KYAC & at the top local clubs. My sister
also played a huge role in my career cause her best
friend did the traffic reports on NY's 92 WKTU radio.
That was the HIT station back then & they did mixes on
the air. So I ended up becoming the west coasts' first
DJ to host an all rap radio show on 1250 KFOX with "FreshTracks"
& I also dj'd at the clubs
startin' off by mixing and cuttin' on the classic
Showco mixer, than to a Realistic mixer! What started
out as a hobby to meet single woman, turned out to be my
lifelong career! So you know I'm a true O.G. (Old
Guy!!!). I've been DJ'ing for 26 years now. YIKES!!!
2.
When did you begin RapAttackLives.com and why? In
Sept. of 1997, HITS Magazine flew & moved me down to
L.A. (all expenses paid) from Seattle to become their
Rap Editor. In 2002, HITS closed down my Rap Dept. & the
online craze was just beginning to soar. With some good
advice, I took my "Rap Attack" column from HITS along
with my 200 reporting DJ's with me online and started my
own business with:
www.RapAttackLives.com! I wanted to keep
the love & importance of College Radio & DJ's alive. To
this date, I still feel Hip-Hop music gets it's best
exposure & played first on College Radio because the
dj's don't have to get permission to break new music
like they have to do now on commercial radio mix shows.
3.
What's the most memorable experience in your DJ career?
I have so many to mention but one that sticks out is
back in 1985 when we (Mix-A-Lot) were just gettin'
started, our single, "Square Dance Rap" was a big hit in
London. Because of that, we were flown to London to be a
part of the Fresh Festival Tour. That was one of the
very first Hip-Hop tours. Us (Mix-A-Lot) & The World
Class Wreckin' Kru were the ONLY west coast groups on
that bill. Everyone else was east coast like the Soul
Sonic Force, Al Nayafish, Steady B & a grip of other
east coast groups. I'll never forget flying to & from
London sittin' in the back of the plane with Dr. Dre not
knowing that in the next 3 to 4 years he'd become one of
the biggest Hip-Hop heads ever!
4.
What advice do you give to new djs that are pursuing a
successful career like yours that you wish you had
received when starting out? I paid my dues from
dj'ing for free, lugging my crates of records through
the snow, gettin' haters yellin' at me calling me weak
to lettin' the spotlight get to my head which ruined my
marriage, etc.. Be humble, learn all genres of music. A
true DJ doesn't just like Underground Hip-Hop, a true dj
can adapt to play & appreciate mainstream Hip-Hop, to
cuts from the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's both pop, dance,
alternative & r&b. One of the best ways I learned to be
able to adapt to any crowd on the dance floor is by
spending a whole year dj'ing weddings! YOU WILL LEARN
FROM THAT TRUST ME!
6.
What do you miss most about being on the air? I miss
interacting with my listeners. When I was on Seattle
radio (KFOX, KUBE & KCMU) I had a very large fan base
ranging from women 18-35, to kids, teens & rockers! I
love getting behind the mic & going one on one with my
listeners. I loved making special guest appearances at
events & meeting the listeners. It's such a great
feeling knowing that you have touched someone's life by
just being heard on the radio. I always try to set a
good example because after 18 years on the air, I
learned that I became a role model to a lot of people.
Plus being with Sir Mix-A-Lot & in his videos aired
nationally, I became known all over the states & I was
reaching out to even more people outside of just
Seattle!
7.
What is something you want to say to your past, present
and future faithful listeners? Back in 1980 when I
first started playing Hip-Hop on the radio, a small
handful stuck with my beliefs that this music was going
to be around for a long time & become a huge part of our
lives. Also for letting me share a big part of my life
with you because if it wasn't for this biz, I have no
clue what I'd be doing to make an honest paycheck with.
I feel so blessed that I'm able to be making a living
doing what I love to do. If you stick with something you
love doing & truly believe in it, you will get paid. And
I don't mean just monetarily but you will get paid!
8..
What is a song that you hate to love ? (guilty pleasure)
Donny Osmond "Puppy Love," The Partridge Family "I Woke
Up In Love This Morning" and Don Ho "Pearly Shells!"
9. As
a veteran on the promotion side of the music industry,
what suggestions do you have for independent or new
artists in creating a buzz for themselves?
Make sure you put your ish on
vinyl & get it into the hands of College Rap Radio
shows, Internet Rap Shows, Satellite Rap Shows & MixTape
DJ's. That is your base. If it starts a buzz, I
guarantee you, someone in your market on the TOP
commercial radio stations' mixshow head will hear of
your material & will start givin' it some love! Plus get
to know your retail heads in your market, the record
pool heads & members in your market, the local video
shows, the local mom & pop trade magazines. Your success
is built largely on RELATIONSHIPS!
10.
What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?
I think since I came from the beginning days of
Hip-Hop, I really didn't have an obstacle. Being Asian (filipino)
& involved with something brand new helped. I do notice
an obstacle NOW! After being one of the first in this
radio & dj'ing game, I can't seem to get my foot back in
the door to do even a specialty radio show on a local
L.A. radio station. So KDAY if you're reading this....
HIRE ME! LOL
11.
Who were your biggest influences in your life? Bruce
Lee, Muhammad Ali, my sister Ann, my Gung-Fu Sifu Taky
Kimura and Jesus Christ!
12.
Who would you like to share the stage with? One of my
dreams is to play the role of 50's icon, Charlie Chan in
a motion picture & have maybe Nick Cannon be my Number
One son or some new kat/actor who's half black & asian!
Who
have you shared the stage with? Wow, let's see: Eazy-E
& NWA, MC Hammer, Public Enemy, Kid N'Play, Egyptian
Lover, Rodney-O & Joe Cooley, Mantronix & MC Tee,
Treacherous 3, Bambataa & Soul Sonic Force, GrandMaster
Flash & The Furious 5, The Gap Band, Nu Shooz & I've met
& hung out with Fresh Prince, Mariah Carey, Muhammad
Ali, Jackie Chan, Big Pun, Digital Underground, Wu-Tang
Clan & the list goes on & on! Richard Roundtree (SHAFT!)
& more! You can actually peep me in the movie "House
Party 4" with IMX & in 20th Century Fox's, "Kung Pow!
Enter The Fist."
13.
What are your typical working hours and what are your
goals for this year? I live eat & breathe Hip-Hop &
promotions. I work outta my own spot & it's not a 9-5
job. I wake up & go to sleep doing this full time!
Serious, this is a blessing but I hope to get back into
acting and land a slot in a TV sitcom or in several
motion pictures. I want to break the stereo type of an
asian actor. I can do more than be in a Kung-Fu movie!
14.
What has your experience on MySpace been like so far?
How did you first heard of MySpace? Is there anyone or
group of people that you would like to re-connect with?
If so, who? I started out on Friendster until my ex
wife said hey on MySpace you ADD more pictures to your
profile & there's a lot of single women on the site! LOL
MySpace is one of my MOST FAVORITE ONLINE spots ever! I
have reconnected with old fans of mine dating back to my
early 80's days on Seattle's radio & most recently, I
kid you not, I met my fiance' on MySpace! She used to
date one of my RAP ATTACK DJ's outta NY who's on MySpace
& she saw my profile on his page. She hit me up, we met,
we fell in love & as of September 27th, 2005, I took her
with me back to my hometown of Seattle, we went to the
very top of the Space Needle & I asked her to marry me.
She said, "YES!!!"
THANK
YOU MYSPACE.COM!!! I want to be one of your official
spokes person for MySpace cause you have blessed me with
a lovely fiance', reconnected me with old friends &
connected me with new friends!

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Bri-G
(Mixtapes-NY): "Back to work after a much needed week
vacation.
First off, I want to thank
all of you for coming out to The Power Summit
this year. This conference was created to celebrate the
cornerstone of Hip-Hop, the DJ. Without all of you, this
Hip-Hop shit would never be what it has become today.
The word Mixshow was dropped from the title due to the
growing impact of the DJ as a whole, not just guys on
the radio, but mixtape and club guys too. I think in our
first venture in reaching out to non-radio DJs, we had a
good representation.
The
Power Summit, in order to grow and become more
successful, needs your input. Please hit me with any
concerns, questions, and ways to improve so that it can
be more effective and enjoyable for you. We don't know
what you want if you don't tell us. This conference is
about you, and therefore should be as DJ friendly as
possible.
I want everybody who attended this year, to not only
return next year, but to truly believe that they are a
part of the conference. Not just an attendee.
As
DJs, music industry executives, and lovers of hip hop,
we've achieved the American Dream of going to work
everyday and doing something we love. I get paid to talk
hip hop with you guys and you get paid to play the music
you love...and sometimes don't love. We’ve all worked
our asses off to get where we’re at. Sacrificed time
with friends, family, and our girlfriends/boyfriends to
be able to go to work everyday and do something we love.
I
returned from the Bahamas, late last Monday night, and
while checking my email, i received some bad news about
one of my old fraternity brothers, Jeff. While
reading the article, everything kinda fell into
perspective for me.
The
college I attended, Jacksonville University, has an
extremely high percentage of ROTC students. Kids who've
know they're whole lives that they wanted to be Marines.
They attended my school for free, worked they’re asses
off, and achieved their own American Dream of going to
work every day and doing what they love, defending our
freedom. Many of these kids became my best friends and
brothers.
These men, like Jeff, receive trips, boots, and clothes,
just like us in the music industry. Jeff's trip wasn't
to the Bahamas though; it was to the front lines of
Iraq. His showcases didn't have Busta Rhymes on
the mic, didn't get to watch DJ Revolution show
the DJ community that Serato is the shit. All
Jeff got was an M-16 and the chance to stand in line for
hours when he wanted some food.
Talking
to a lot of you, you expressed to me how lucky we all
are. Not only do we get to do what we love, but we get a
chance to hang out on a tropical island because of it. I
got to stand next to Jay-Z, got to talk
personally with Russell Simmons and build with a
lot of you on a personal and not just business level. 2
years ago, working for my cousin, filling vending
machines, I never dreamed I’d be able to do all this.
Last
week, my fraternity brother Jeff was sent to the western
front of Iraq. There he continued with the job he loved,
built with the other soldiers, and defended our freedom.
Unfortunately, Jeff never made it home from Western Iraq
alive. His chopper was shot down and was one of 3
marines killed.
I told you this story not to patronize you and please
don't think I am. I just want you to look at yourselves,
and to a man, realize that through hard work and
dedication, we’ve put ourselves in a position where we
can go to work happy knowing our job isn’t all that
serious. We’re lucky in that fact. We're not soldiers,
we're not nurses, and we’re not teachers. We don't save
lives, defend lives, and don't mold young minds. We play
records, we talk about music; we're DJs.
The Power Summit is
about the DJ. Always will be. Just let me know how you
want to make it better"...

"Spent the weekend in Los Angeles to attend a suprise
50th birthday party for my wife's aunt. It was a short
trip but I did manage to see some spots. I hadn't been
to Venice Beach in about 5 years. Glad to know that I
"still need to repent" and that "the world is ending".
All of this yelled at me by a megaphone before even
parking the car. LA has NY beat for weirdos and freaks
hands down. Saw a lot of "G-UNOT" shirts hanging next to
the "G-Unit" shirts. Everybody tryin to make a
buck. The best part of the trip though was flippin
channels and coming across the new KDAY. They
play all the early 90's Hip-Hop in regular rotation. The
Baka Boyz were killin an old school sent. I
listened a few times and it's probably the best station
I've heard in years"...
