IMPORTANT TO ALL RAP ATTACK REPORTING DJ's & RECORD LABEL REPS: The last day to report your Top 30 chart for 2005 will be on Wednesday, December 14. We will start back up on Wednesday, January 11, 2006...

Back in the late 80's through the late 90's, I hosted Seattle's highly rated & Number One Hip-Hop show called "Rap Attack" on 90.3FM! My co-host for several of those years was my potnah, the Shockmaster Glen Boyd (see photo above). Back in the early 80's, Glen was responsible for selling all the hard to find Hip-Hop vinyl at both Pennylane Records & at Music Menu. We continue to be friends after all these years & I wanted to share with you a side of the Shockmaster Glen Boyd found on his latest bloq online at: http://theglenblog.blogspot.com/. Peep it & enjoy:

Tonight as I was going through my e-mail, I got a "Happy Thanksgiving" message from my former DJ partner Nasty Nes.

Nes and I worked together for a few years in the late eighties and early nineties, as co-hosts of what was at that time, "Seattle's Only All Rap Radio Show" on KCMU's Rap Attack, as well as in promotions at Nastymix Records, the tiny Seattle independent label that launched the career of Sir Mix A Lot.

With the onset of the holidays, I usually tend to get reflective this time of year. But hearin' from Nes today for some odd reason made me feel really nostalgic.

I am really proud of what we accomplished back then. Not only did we produce a pioneering Hip-Hop radio show that remains to be equalled in the Seattle market, but we also played an integral role in developing Seattle's first rap superstar, Sir Mix A Lot.

A lot (and I mean an AWFUL lot) has changed (for all of us) since those heady days in the late eighties and early nineties when we we're all basically on top of the world.

I went through my share of problems to be sure, and ended up leaving the music business. I'm basically at peace with that these days though. The music business has changed so much in the few years since I left it, I barely recognize it anyway now.

What I do know is that the three years I spent in L.A. to seek my fortune in that business after spending a lifetime trying to get there left an impression on me that will last me the rest of my life. And it is an impression that has absolutely everything to do with the reason I now know that I simply didn't belong there. Even after believing my entire life up until then, not only that I did, but that it was my destiny.

Nes, on the other hand, made the same move (to L.A.) to seek his fortunes much as I did. He also went through some problems, some of which became very public (it is L.A. after all). Nes sends me e-mail pretty often, and we still see each other every couple of years when he gets back up to
Seattle. He is also still slugging it out in the cut-throat music business. To which I say, good for him.

What the music business has become is not for me anymore (at least not on the national stage), and there are about a million reasons why that is, which are probably fodder for future postings here.

What I am happy to see, and what prompted this post, is that my old friend Nes seems to have come out on the other side of the L.A. music experience fairly unscathed. He's engaged to be married. He proclaims his faith in Jesus Christ publicly (which I can personally attest is not an easy task in that particular arena). In short, he seems to be rid of any demons he had. He seems happy.

So this one's for you Nasty Nes. May the good Lord grant you all of the peace, love, and happiness that you deserve. Oh, and one more thing,
Don't count your old buddy the "Shockmaster" out yet either. I've got a good feeling about 2006...

Tommy Boy presents: HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991... VOLUMES 1 - 4 OF HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991

To celebrate its upcoming 25th anniversary, in 2006, Tommy Boy is releasing HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991, a foundational 12 volume CD collection featuring 144 extremely diverse tracks which have contributed to the groundwork of classic Hip Hop music.

HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991 was expertly compiled by executive producers Tom Silverman (founder and CEO of Tommy Boy) and Stu Fine (founder of Wild Pitch Records). With an introduction to the entire collection by Nelson George, each volume features a set of liner notes from a noted journalist such as Jeff Chang, Dan Charnas, Raquel Cepeda, Bill Adler, Brian Coleman, Toure, Harry Allen or Davey D. The cover art for each volume features a classic image from the collection of Martha Cooper, legendary Hip Hop photographer.

HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991 encompasses a magical era when party dances were practically made up daily, shouting out your zodiac sign was flavor and Afrika Bambaataa was pushing his message of "peace, love, unity and having fun" to the universe. Some tracks may also re- educate young and old alike to the dangers of cocaine, unprotected sex, racism, skeezer women, tramp men or police brutality. The collection will take you back to a time when Hip Hop was not mainstream and wasn't always easy to find outside of NYC. HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991 clocks out just before the era of Gangsta Rap explodes and just touches on its beginnings with Schoolly D, Ice-T, N.W.A. and j ust a few others.

Digging into the HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 - 1991 crates could reveal wonderful and oft forgotten secrets for today's industry and commercial artists to discover about true Hip Hop success:

1. There's no biting in Hip Hop.

2. You must have a DJ and sometimes he is leader of your crew!

3. Everything can be turned into Hip Hop if you sample it right.

4. Rap is just one element of the culture not the whole culture!

5. Being experimental and unique is best.

6. Dancers provide good hype and don't have to be strippers.

7. It's OK to have a message, be educational and /or take a stand.

Join us in 2006 to celebrate Tommy Boy's 25th Anniversary and its significant contributions to the history of Hip Hop.

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Garbs Infinite (WRUW-OH): " Hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving. For those in the snow belt like me be careful! I have a decent sized show that I am helping to put on January 13th featuring Grand Agent, Saj Supreme & the rest of my crew, and other groups out here in cleveland who are doing some stuff on a bigger scale then the average local mc's. If any of you are interested or know anyone who might be insending me some giveaways for the concert lemme know. Anything will do some cd's, shirts, anything that you might be working on, It will be a large hip hop crowd! Contact me Garbs38@gmail.com or hit me 216-965-5500 Peace!!!!!

EatthQuake (Live365.com): "Check out my pick hit of the week. If you have never heard of Sonny Bonoho then you better ask somebody. He has a new cd dropping Jan 12th. Once again lookout for Sonny Bonoho with Faith on 2050...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): " Sorry if I’ve been too busy to reply to your email or voicemail message. You see, I’ve been glued to the TV following the Irv Gotti/Murder Inc. trial. I’m absolutely petrified that if Irv Gotti goes down, and Murder Inc. closes its doors, we may see a detrimental blow to the Hip-Hop world. Can you imagine a release schedule void of LPs from Cadillac Tah, Vita, Charli Baltimore, The Murderers and Lloyd? Neither can I. I don’t even want to TRY to imagine the hell that life would be… I’ve decided this week that I’ve pretty much had it with football commentators. I really enjoy the pre-game stuff on FOX and ESPN, but the commentary during the game is so stale and obvious that it makes me want to run with a lollipop in my mouth until I trip and choke to death. I love comments like “the team that puts up more offense is going to walk away with the win” and “you can’t win football games by turning the ball over.” I especially love the 10 second interview that the sideline bimbo conducts with the coach as he heads into the locker room for half time. As the commentator tries to get some introspective glance into the heart and soul of the coach’s strategy, he murmurs a vague comment like “we have to play better in the second half”. Wow. Truly earth-shattering"...

Lee L'Heureux (WRED-ME): "As some of you know, I personally am making some changes. In the next few weeks I'll be leaving WRED. I have some excellent other opportunities including a radio venture available through Yahoo and Itunes which you'll hear more about later and some label work with Asylum Records. We did some great things at WRED which is #1 18-34 in the market and my new music show is #1 rated all demos in the market. However, it is time to move on. For those of you who service me records, please change the address to:

 Lee L'Heureux

6 Old Belgrade Ave.

 Oakland, ME 04963

Thank you for working with me. There will be another new address coming but for the time being if you could use that it would be appreciated. Thank you all for the support of my endeavors"...

Raw-B (KUSF-CA): "What up Peoples!? I recently started helping out these folks who've created a new way to listen to music. It's basically your personal jukebox that's connected to a network. Think Myspace meets Itunes...yet completely unique...if that makes sense. Although they're still in their infancy stages, Chuck D's Rap Station label and Duck Down Records have signed on to contribute content to the network. This is an EXCELLENT way for you and your label to spread your music free of charge and completely legal. One of the advantages of using this format is that you get detailed feedback from the listener i.e. what songs they like, how many times they listen, their location, and many more demographic data. Anyway...the best way to get a grasp about what I'm babbling about is to download the player and check it out for yourself. If you or your label is interested in submitting content to this exclusive network then feel free to hit me back. Thanks for your time. Here are the links:
To download the player and start listening to new tunes, you'll need to
register for the music service. Click this link:
http://www.tastyaudio.com/register/92ade93e1fb8
We look forward to your feedback as we roll out this new way to connect
with independent music. Your comments are extremely useful for us to
incorporate new ideas into future versions of the product"...

Meddafore (Mixtape / Philly): "My Birthday Bash is set to take place on December 17th, DOIN IT BIG! Any labels or companies looking to get involved with sponsorship or anything else related to the event, hit me up asap at Meddafoe@aol.com. This will be the one to remember!"...

SHOUT OUT TIZIME: Happy Birthday this week to my ole' buddy from Seattle's NastyMix Records era, Ramon Wells!... A belated Happy B'day & R.I.P. to both Bruce Lee & my mom, Leonarda Hocson Rodriguez (Nov. 27)...To Pat Morita, this man has put a smile on our faces as he portrayed Arnold in the TV sitcom "Happy Days" & brought martial arts back into the limelight back in the 80's as Mr Miyagi in "Karate Kid." I'm very proud of Pat who has been a positive role model as an Asian/American. I too looked up to him & will strive to follow him in his footsteps as a succesful actor & a positive role model. (R.I.P. Mr Morita)...
