The great Lou Rawls, an American icon is gone. Rawls, 72, died early last Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was hospitalized last month for
treatment of lung and brain cancer...

On January 4, 2006, Queen Latifah made Hip-Hop history as the rapper-turned-actress was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame...

FANTASTIK 4OUR SHOW - CANCELLED - Power 106 in LA has cancelled the FANTASTIK 4OUR SHOW hosted by four of the most talented DJs, J Rocc, Mr Choc, C-Minus and Truly OdD. They've been hosting a weekend mixshow on our big commercial urban station out here for the past 8 years focused on independent artsts and labels, and they're some of the key players in keeping the true essence of Hip-Hop alive with "Friday Night Flavas". Bleu Collar & the Los Angeles Hip Hop community would like to encourage you to help save independent Hip Hop in the West by simply clicking on the petition link below so that we can let the higher ups know that we support independent Hip-Hop in Southern California. While Power 106 has not indicated reasons for the cancellation of the weekly three-hour show, industry insiders speculated that the reason for the move is to make room for a more commercial oriented radio show. After its inception, Friday Night Flavas experienced major success and helped Power 106 to open its door to Hip-Hop and to their current slogan "Where Hip-Hop Lives." If Power 106 is where Hip Hop lives - Then they should embrace the realest Hip Hop they have - Friday Night Flavas. Click here to save Friday Night Flavas: http://www.petitiononline.com/Power106/petition.html...

After five years of serving up Hip-Hop on MTV News, Sway was almost ready to leave the network shortly after negotiations for his renewal began in September of 2005. Sway is the first MTV personality since Carson Daily to negotiate a deal on this scale. Meanwhile, Sway and Tech continue to host their renowned Wake Up Show, which is syndicated through Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, San Diego, France, Japan, and other markets, with expanding syndication this year. In addition Sway and King Tech own a record label, Bolo Entertainment, with distribution through Universal. They will be releasing Chino XL’s solo album first quarter...

He sounds a bit like him and even resembles him slightly, but rapper Two Five says he's nothing like his cousin, mega rap star Fifty Cent. Two Five, whose real name is Michael Francis, is in talks with several record companies to drop an album he says will set the record straight on him and Fifty, with whom he grew up in South Jamaica. "I can't follow in that man's footsteps, and that's what I'm trying to stay away from," said Two Five, 22, who also goes by the nickname Quarter. "I'm trying to separate myself from him. Nobody wants to live [in a situation] where everywhere you go you need to have security."  The cousins - Fifty's real name is Curtis Jackson - got their nicknames as teens while living in their grandmother's house near 134th St. and Guy R. Brewer Blvd. One, a former gangster, went on to become world famous for his sensational lyrics and for surviving nine gunshot wounds. The other lived in the shadows of his cousin's celebrity, all the while dreaming of achieving the same stardom. Two Five and Fifty are no longer on speaking terms, and haven't been for more than three years. The shooting of Fifty Cent and his subsequent rise to rap fame created a rift between the two that has yet to heal. "It was fairly easy until he got shot," said Two Five, who now lives in Hempstead, L.I. "I reached out plenty of times, but there was no response." Two Five said despite the lack of communication, he is proud of his older cousin's success. He considers Fifty Cent a mentor and remembers him best as his street guardian. Two Five, who now works as a music producer, also is working on a DVD that documents his life growing up in South Jamaica and his work on his as-yet-untitled album. "What's Good" will be a white vinyl, promotional copy only releases that will be serviced to our Rap Attack DJ panel in a couple weeks. To hear Two Five's raps, visit www.whois25.com...

Bri-G (Mixtapes-NY): "I gotta step my club game up soon, so I spent the weekend getting my hard drive right and my Serato crates up to date for the clubs. While doing this i came to a realization, New York Hip-Hop is fucken dead. I think I got about 150 mp3s in my "New Shit" club crate. Out of that 150, there might be 15 "New York" records. It's rediculous to me that I have to play nothing but Dipset, 50, and a rapper who died 8 years ago to represent NYC Hip-Hop right now. Mobb Deep, Jay Z, 50, Nas &
Cam have been around for at least 10 years now. Remember 1996? Everybody who was hot then is still hot now....and 2 of em (Biggie & Pun) aren't even fucken alive. Are u telling me that within that 10 years of Hip-Hop not 1 rapper from NYC could step his game up to be considered one of the best? Not fucken 1?

New York Hip-Hop has become what the WWF was in the mid-90's. It's a bunch of the same guys who have been around for the last 10-15 years and they've run out of gimmicks. One day somebody's gonna step their game up and we'll have a rebirth like Stone Cold Steve Austin did for the WWF. That rebirth isn't gonna sound like it did in 1996 so don't get it fucked up when it comes around. Biggie didn't sound like Rakim, Jay didn't sound like Dana Dane, and Mobb Deep wasn't Run DMC. I just think NYC's stuck in that time period and until we leave it behind and somebody gives us something new to gravitate to, I'll be playing Snap Your Fingers and Laffy Taffy in the club"...

Kiz-One (WickedKarma.com/KKFI - MO): "Just wanted to say hello for the new year, I hope that 06 will be the year that you hope for. Peace and blessing to everybody. I also wanted to let you know that my stations is now streaming live on the net. You can tune in any Saturday at 8pm(cst) to 10pm(cst) to hear the show. Just check out my my space site: http://www.myspace.com/kizone  and look for the link with the radio towers. Also I wanted to give a big shout to my boy "Reach" and is 1/5 of my cru the "SOUL PROVIDERS" who won the Scion Next Up Hip-Hop Mc contest. He was chosen out of 2000 people to be a top 10 finalist and then won the whole competition. DJ Premier, Green Lateran and a few more chosen him to take home the title. My man Reach won a video, 5 grand, and a chance to perform at some Scion events through out the country. Big shouts out to him. I see yall in 06, the year of the beast!!!!"...

Mike Swift (WSCB-MA): "This is DJ Mike Swift. I'm writing this to let you know I'm no longer the urban music director at WSCB in Springfield, MA so you can take me off the reporting DJ list. I appreciate all the music, drops, interviews, etc. RapAttack provided. Thanks again for all your help. Peace"...

Anthony Pukalo (WECS-CT): "Here is my new email address effective now: antdotone@gmail.com"...

Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "THINGS THAT WERE GREAT ABOUT 2005":
1. The birth of my "neice" Candace Anoush Madoyan on
April 8th.
2. The week I spent in NYC this past September. The shows at BB Kings were incredible.
3. The weekend in
Palm Springs back in May during the Urban Network convention.
4. The road trip to Chico, CA with Jason D & Kutmasta Kurt. Man we had a good time and managed to not get arrested either. LOL.
5. Aug. 4th when my "lil sis" retained primary custody of her son Niko from her piece of shit ex boyfriend.
6. The Breed Love Oddyssey tour with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Ghostface Killa, Jean Grae, and Pharoahe Monche on Halloween night. That shit was off the hook.
7. Seeing Jodeci reunite at KMEL Summerjam.
8. Having O.C. live in the studio on my show. That was real dope.
I want to send shouts to my immediate family, to Jason D & family, to Kutmasta Kurt & family, my extended family ("lil sis" Baby C, my "niece" Candace, my "nephew" Niko. I miss you guys), Nasty Nes (thanks for all the support over the years.I wish you nothing but luck in everything), to the Ortega Family (Gary, Gloria, Chris, Kristi, and Ashley), the KHDC staff, my radio audience, Alex & Sam at KDON (good to see people other than myself with Hip Hop sensibility in Salinas. LOL.), and everyone else I may have forgotten. It wasn't intentional. 2006 is here!!"...

Garbs Infinite (WRUW-OH): "Just wanted to make sure that everyone has updated my new address info:

 18003 Harvard Avenue (down)

 Cleveland, OH 44128

216-965-5500

Mp3 Email: Garbs38@gmail.com"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Wow…2006. I can’t believe that we are starting a new year of radio/reporting. I had a great break which included 10 days of doing almost nothing; a Christmas where I got enough Hennessy to last me into summer, and a wild New Year’s where I co-hosted a house party with two fireworks displays. If you have been receiving this email for the past few years, you know that it’s time again for me to dust off my crystal ball and peer into the months ahead. Here’s what I see happening over the 2006 Hip-Hop year:

Jan. 2006 - Music retailers see unprecedented returns as the year opens. The most returned LP of the Christmas season is Notorious B.I.G. “Duets”. Hip Hop heads quickly realize that they bought this album already back in 1999, when it was called “Born Again”. In a related story, Diddy quietly hires a music history tutor from Julliard after he realizes that a duet is a song with only two artists featured.

Feb. 2006 - Kanye West’s year gets off to a bumpy start as he is sued for theft of intellectual property by famed record producer Dave Seville. “I was using chipmunk samples way before Kanye,” an irate Seville claims during an MTV News interview. “Let’s see Kanye sell as many records as Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, then he can talk shit.”

Mar. 2006 - After reuniting with Jay-Z and DJ Premier during the close of 2005, Nas continues the trend into 2006. Fans are floored to learn that Nas will team up once again with Steven Seagal and Tom Sizemore as “Ticker 2” hits the big screen.

Apr. 2006 - Vinyl collectors are outraged as the major labels unveil a plan to increase 12” single sales in 2006. 2005 saw the death of the b-side as the a-side program was pressed on front and back of 12” wax. For 2006 major labels begin issuing a separate 12” for each version of the song (clean, dirty, instrumental, acapella). “Why sell 1 single when we can fuck over the DJs and sell 4?” an unnamed record exec states, “Plus, you want to have 8 tracks of the same acapella on a record in case you scratch one by accident.”

May 2006 - The Game makes headlines again as he is asked to participate in the commencement for the University of Southern California. Game will assist the University’s President by reading all 10,000 names of the departing seniors. “He dropped so many names on “The Documentary”, that he was the natural choice,” a school official explains. In his giddiness to make a good impression, Game shops for a facial tattoo that is as amateur and feminine looking as the butterfly that adorns his right cheek. After a thorough search, he settles on a 1st graders’ crayon drawing of a maxi pad.

Jun. 2006 - After settling their publishing dispute with Diddy, the Lox crew finally collect their master recordings from Bad Boy’s Manhattan offices. Surprisingly, many of the early recordings are missing. The only one to ever resurface is “If You Think I’m Jiggy”, which is found in the “take a penny, leave a penny” tray at a Hoboken Mobil station.

Jul. 2006 - Summer heats up with the Fugees reunion tour hitting 40 U.S. cities. Wyclef and Lauryn belt out the classics, while Pras stays shackled and gagged on a dolly a la Hannibal Lecter. “This is their best work to date” gushes a Rolling Stone review of the tour.

Aug. 2006 - The Screwed & Chopped movement looses some of it’s mystique as a diary penned by the late DJ Screw surfaces. Within its pages, Screw confesses that his trademark sound was inspired by nothing more than the batteries going dead in his walkman.

Sept. 2006 - Death Row Records goes for an industry record by re-releasing their classic catalog for a fourth time. The new dual-disc, digi-pack, glossy cover, microwave friendly versions of All Eyez on Me, The Chronic, and Doggystyle hit stores. Suge has upped the ante this time by including full color pogs featuring Pac, Dre and Snoop. Meanwhile, a puzzled Petey Pablo scratches his head and wonders if his album will ever drop. “I know that Suge ain’t gonna do me like Nate Dogg, Lady of Rage, Hammer, Danny Boy, Crooked I, Eastwood, Sam Sneed, Tha Realest, Topp Dogg, O.F.T.B. and Above The Law,” Pablo vents.

Oct. 2006 - R. Kelly releases “Trapped in the Closet” parts 12-24. In this mind boggling sequel, Kelly fucks two midgets, runs a Nazi concentration camp, finds a finger in his Wendy’s Chili, contracts bird flu, reads a Harry Potter book , buys some dented cans of Chunky Soup on sale at the supermarket, gets a bad rug burn, murders a hobo, and still finds time for crappy collabos with mainstream rap trash.

Nov. 2006 - U-God finally does the right thing and takes a long nap in his closed garage with his SUV running. No one notices that he is missing until 2010.

Dec. 2006 - Gay rumors swirl around the G Unit camp after an early unreleased version of Tony Yayo’s hit “Curious” surface under the eyebrow-raising title “Bi-Curious”. “It’s true,” Yayo admits “I almost was on that “Brokeback” shit. But luckily for my fans, I have Boost Mobile"...
