What's upper?
I
peeped out last Sunday's
L.A.'s
Regional Finals "King Of The Beats" battle presented by
SCION at the Roxy. This was a first & my first to
ever see kats up on stage battle each other with their
drum machines, lap tops & keyboards. Yo, seeing this was
like seeing my first dj battle at NY's "New Music
Seminar" back in the 80's! By the end of the evening it
came down to between Beathoven vs. Royal 16.
L.A.'s winner is Beathoven (see photo above) who amazed
the crowd with his beats, his skills & his showmanship
on stage. Hosted by Dante Ross & Rahzel,
the guest judges were FredWreck & Muggs.
Also in the house were my peeps, Everlast,
Davey-D, DJ Buddhabong, Chris Roker &
the Black Tree Gang. Props to Dana Shayegan
& Mark Meyerhoff for makin' this event
happen. You can catch the "KOTB" Regional Finals also in
Atlanta on Oct 3rd, in New York on Oct 16th & the finale
in NY on Saturday, Nov 4th! I'll be at the NY finale & I
hope to see you there too! For more info log onto:

"Label Boss Whips Up Hip-Hop Success" by Chris Faraone/
Music as shown in "The Boston Herald" on
September 17, 2006:
http://theedge.bostonherald.com/musicNews/
view.bg?articleid=157854&format=&page=1
Commonwealth Records owner Dru Garrity’s first release,
a rap CD by Bawston Strangla, won a 1998
Boston
Music Award. His second, “Mental Flux,” by
Rhode
Island
duo Clockworx, was selected as a 1999 RollingStone.com
Editors Pick and reached No. 40 on College Music
Journal’s singles chart.
But
despite the
Danvers
native’s hip-hop accomplishments, Garrity hasn’t quit
his night job.
“I’ve
been working in kitchens since I was 15 and I got in
trouble,” said Garrity, 36, during an interview on
Castle Island. “Instead of hanging out, my father put me
to work at his friend’s restaurant. I eventually became
a chef.”
Last
week, Garrity released his latest CD, “A Boston State of
Mind,” a compilation featuring music from Commonwealth’s
nine-year run as one of Beantown’s premier independent
rap labels. Garrity credits his label’s survival to his
cooking gigs at places ranging from
Newbury Street’s
toney Capital Grille to the Foxy Lady strip club in
Providence.
“I
started all of this with money I made as a chef,”
Garrity said. “My first Strangla single, which was a
cassette, only cost me $250 to put out. When my projects
make money, I just flip it over to the next one.”
Garrity’s first successes were due partly to beginner’s
luck but also foresight: His early use of Internet
streaming helped push tracks by Strangla and Clockworx
as far as
Japan.
Commonwealth was quick to release MP3s before major
labels were doing it and recently began producing videos
to complement singles.
“MP3
technology is a Pandora’s box,” Garrity said. “It’s good
that you can get your music out to people
instantaneously, but it also created wannabes who buy
equipment, make bad songs and put them out over the
Internet.”
Garrity focuses on New England’s
most promising rappers. Since 2004, Commonwealth has
released singles by Slaine, DL, Mic Stylz, K.T. and
Bomshot, all of which reached the Top 5 on hip-hop’s
leading college airplay chart, Rap Attacks’ Top 30. “In
the last year, my company has really taken off,” Garrity
said. “As a result, I’ve taken in real partners for the
first time ever.” Garrity’s childhood friend,
marketing specialist Gary Goldman, and
Peabody native Mark “Moke” Bistany, drummer for rock
band Puddle of Mudd, are helping to bankroll
Commonwealth.
“I
always knew that Moke went to L.A. when he was 18 to be
a drummer,” Garrity said, “but I never knew he got the
gig in Puddle of Mudd. I happened to be in
Cali
and we met up. He called the next day saying he wanted
to be involved.”
With
national distribution, it’s likely “A Boston State of
Mind” and an upcoming Slaine documentary, “Behind the
8-Ball,” will be Garrity’s biggest releases to date. But
the label chief/chef feels no pressure to make a quick
score.
“Most
labels are preoccupied trying to recoup their
investments in the short term,” Garrity said. “Me, I’d
rather wait and get my maximum profit. I don’t need the
money right now. I’ll always have a job waiting for me.
No matter what, people need to eat.”

RU READY FOR THIS? by: Gary Jackson:
A Sri
Lanka native, and now fully embraced by the Hip-Hop
community as its own, the 21-year-old Ruwanga “Ru”
Samath has been in the States for nine years.
Gifted musically, he doesn’t just do beats, but writes
full instrumental compositions that, alone, would stand
up. That’s because his mother, Renuka, was a highly
popular musician in Sri Lanka, but left for fear of her
son’s life in that civil war-ravaged island country. She
made him practice, and the results are now showing.
Ru’s
reputation has grown with more than 250,000-plus hits on
his MySpace web site: myspace.com/thebirdcall. Through
that site, strong word of mouth, and the help of
SESAC’s James Leach, Ru’s music reached the
Aftermath camp, who immediately assigned him
production on major projects, which will be released
early in 2007. He is also producing female vocalist
Azure (pronounced A-sure-ray), who is said to have 3
deals on the table. He has been chosen to produce her
first single over the like Timbaland and Rich
Harris.
Ru
recently met with musical genius Stevie Wonder,
who loves his blend of Sri Lankan influences with modern
Hip-Hop and rap. But the clincher to Ru’s growing
in-demand style is a recently completed remix of
Beyonce’s new single, “Ring the Alarm.” Ru
got the project through Gary Jackson, former
UCLA Extension “Hip-Hop Music Business” instructor.
Ru was a student of Jackson. Ru also has several songs
under consideration for an as-yet-untitled 2007 Chris
Rock movie, others for the Pussycat Dolls and
more...
Skull
is
about to debut his debut single "Boom Di Boom Di" (YG
Entertainment). This reggae/dancehall Hip-Hop track
I predict is guaranteed to pack the dance floors as
"Boom Di Boom Di" meaning "SEX" will heat up turntables
& SERATOS everywhere this Fall of 2006! Stay
tuned...

DJ LoKash (WNHU-CT): "Not much to say this
week other than I need a nap. If you have artists
looking for interviews holla at the kid... Dealing with
school this semester is going to be interesting because
all of my classes are academic (meaning no music or
multimedia stuff) so doing 5 classes worth of reading
and writing is something I haven't done in a long
time... not to mention the fact that I've had a lot of
events so far this month and we are only half way thru
September... I spun a wedding up at Lake George last
week on a boat, and now I'm convinced I'm going to get
married on a boat... If you've never been up there it's
worth checking out, it's beautiful... I've had a few
parties/club nights the past couple weeks so all the
major label priorities have definitely been getting
spins... ***new weekly event*** - I'm now doing TUESDAY
nights at JP's Ultra Lounge here in West Haven. Last
Tuesday was our first one and we had 280 people! Go beer
pong!"...
DJ
Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "Spent the past 5 days in
the scorching heat of Los Angeles. Good lord, when it's
87 degrees at midnight and I'm sporting a wifebeater on
Sunset, you know something is way wrong. LOL. Big up's
to Nasty Nes who schooled me about the importance
of protecting the elephants. Go see Tony Ja in "The
Protector" & you'll see why!
So on Sept. 13th, is the 10 year anniversary of the day
2pac passed. And speaking of anniversaries, I hope
everyone took a moment to pay respect as we recognized
the 5 year anniversary of the September 11th attacks"...
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH):
"I understand that it’s an important historical American
landmark, but I got a little nine-eleven-end out this
past weekend. I think it’s a pretty sad memory that’s
still fresh in most people’s minds, and being bombarded
with it on every channel 24-7 didn’t really improve the
melancholia. I almost let out a stupefied laugh when I
saw a hand drawn sign on the UNH campus that said “9-11,
Never Forget”. Forgetting 9-11 is about as easy as
forgetting to breathe…
What
does Nas have to say about his forthcoming album
“Hip Hop Is Dead”? “It’s probably the best record I ever
did,” Nas boasted this week. Let’s hope so. Because if
it sounds anything like the 2 disc clunker that was
“Streets Disciple”, I think I might have to put my new
Nas records in the same spot that I put my new DMX
records. The fucking dumpster.
Why
are beers at American chain restaurants so big? They
don’t even give you an option anymore. I ordered a
Sam Adams Octoberfest at Chili’s this past weekend
and the waitress brought it out in wheelbarrow with a
straw. Sensing your astonished look, the wait-er/ress
then makes some derogatory comment about your
masculinity like “Not man enough to finish this one?” or
“Drink it all or you’re a faggot”. I guess it’s a good
thing that I’m buzzed off 64 ounces of beer so that when
the check comes for my burger and fries I don’t notice
that the beer was $14…
I
should have drank a 64 ounce beer after watching the
Manning bowl. As usual, my Giants had the luck of
Charlie Brown as they were called for bullshit
penalties that cost them the game. Many people have
theorized that the NFL views Peyton Manning as their
golden boy and will do anything to see him succeed. I’m
starting to think that it’s true. I’m surprised that the
Colts don’t get 5 downs"...
