What's upper?
Attention RAP ATTACK Reporters & record
label reps, this Wednesday, December 13, 2006
will
be our last day to report your playlist for 2006. We
will be back in effect on Wednesday, January 10, 2006.
I will be cleaning house during the month of December,
dropping reporters & adding new reporters...
Last
Thursday was the night in NY where we were supposed to
celebrate the late Justo's "10th Annual Mixtape
Awards." What was to be a night honoring the mixtape
dj's, etc. & the memory of Justo turned out to be
somewhat of a sad evening. Here's the exclusive 411 on
what went down from AllHipHop.com's, Roman
Wolfe:
Hundreds of fans and industry executives braved the
frigid New York cold for Justo's 10th Annual Mixtape
Awards, which were held at the famed Apollo Theater in
Harlem last night (Dec. 7).
What was supposed to be a celebration honoring Orpheus "Justo"
Faison's legacy and the music industry's top mixtape
DJ's turned into a chaotic scene, with many left
stranded when doors to the event were closed early, even
though the Apollo was not filled to capacity.
In addition to celebrating its 10th year of honoring the
best in the mixtape game, this year's event was supposed
to celebrate the life and memory of founder Faison, a
popular industry executive who was tragically killed in
a car accident in
Richmond,
VA
in 2005.
Long and disorganized lines, coupled with a strong and
ominous presence by the New York Police Department
dampened what was meant to be a celebratory evening.
Inside, comic Donnell "Ashy" Larry attempted to lighten
the atmosphere with jokes that often made the crowd
laugh.
"Hip-Hop aint dead but it needs a hug," said Donnell
"Ashy Larry" Rawlings, who joked that somebody should
"tickle" the culture into lightening up.
When DJ Clinton
Sparks
accepted his award for Best Club DJ, members of the
audience were vocal in their displeasure of the
category's winner.
"If you don't win, suck it up and take it on the chin,"
said Luv Bug Starski, an iconic figure in the mixtape
world. "Y'all shoot each other outside." Starski said
that some of the DJ's were only in the business because
they were "scared of them [drug] corners."
Outside, photographers and executives waited in lines,
only to be told no one else would be admitted into the
venue. When no logical explanation was given, tempers
flared, resulting in several, loud arguments between men
at the door and members of the finicky crowd.
Inside the Apollo, members of the audience refused to
comply when Justo's close personal friend Bill Duke
(X-Men: The Last Stand, Get Rich or Die Tryin', Menace
II Society) requested for a moment of silence.
"I loved him like a brother and I came here to give
respect to him. He deserves one moment," said, Duke who
pleaded for silence from the crowd.
Mick Boogie was one of several DJ's who had the brief
chance to accept his award, before a scuffle that
allegedly involved members affiliated with Dipset and
G-Unit had attendees heading for the exits.
"In my quest to be known as one of the most creative and
consistent DJs in the game, I was excited to win an
award that not only recognized me, but showed love to my
region as well," Mick Boogie told AllHipHop.com . "I
wish the awards could have occurred without the
negativity, but hopefully next year will build on the
positives of this year."
Sources also said a dispute with the Fire Marshal helped
the evening come to an early end.
Here are your winners from the 10th annual justo mixtape
awards:

Hip-Hop Producer Bobcat Founds AGENCY FOR DJS &
Producers
Rap
producers and deejays meet in Los Angeles for first
annual Foundation meeting: “Meeting of the Minds.”
In less than a year,
Legendary DJ and Multi-Platinum Producer Bobcat
has
returned to the Music Industry and reestablished himself
as one of the most powerful and important people in the
Music Industry
by
creating an international, bi-coastal DJ and producer
network, entitled, “The Foundation.” Like the William
Morris Agency, The Foundation’s primary focus will
be on representing DJ’s and producers in all
capacities-- from getting music placed in film and tv to
guest appearances on albums-- and has already begun
establishing divisions around the United States, Europe
and Japan. Additionally, Bobcat is launching the west
coast division, entitled, West Coast DJ’s And Producers,
which has all the top notch DJ’s and producers, such as
DJ Warrior, DJ Shortee, DJ Q-Bert,
DJ Quik and LT Hutton, among others.
“Joining the DJ network called Core DJ’s gave me
the incentive to do more for DJ’s and producers so I
wanted to create something where everyone could make
money,” explains Bobcat. “Sharing information is really
the key here—.” Now
Bobcat has captured the attention of record executives
and major labels around the country.
To
kick off The Foundation, Bobcat will held their first
west coast meeting last Saturday, December 9 at 12:00 PM
at the Universal Sheraton Hotel, called “Meeting
Of The Minds.” In the house were music producer and
director DJ Pooh (Friday, The Wash, 3 Strikes),
legendary super sexy Spinderella (Superadio), rap
icon Eric B, Nasty Nes the college radio
king, K Sly honey with the slanted eyes, the
Legendary Mix Master Tony G and Julio G (93.5
KDAY), Multi-Platinum Producer DJ Battlecat,
DJ Motiv8 (Black Eyed Peas Official DJ),
the DJ for Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, DJ
Jam, Rapper/Actor Bigg Steele (Malibu’s Most
Wanted). There was also a special performance by new
Reggae sensation, Skull (see photo above).
Responsible for producing LL Cool J’s greatest
hits including “Mama Said Knock You Out” and “I Need
Love,” Bobcat’s career speaks for itself. The beat maker
also produced mutli-platinum hits for Ice-Cube,
Tupac, Bow-Wow, Jagged Edge,
Master P and Mack 10 to name a few. To learn
more about “The Foundation” and West Coast DJ’s And

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
"What's good fam? So I see Lil Wayne is calling himself
better then Jay Z. That's very interesting. He's
also saying Pharrell is wierd, and that he ain't
seeing the Clipse. Well if homie wanted to get
some press he's definitely going to get that and then
some. To quote a line from James Earl Jones from
The Hunt for Red October "I said speak your mind Jack,
but Jesus Christ"...
L-Precise
(CJSF-Canada):
"Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. I’m
pretty much done shopping early for once! On another
note, this month will be my last for my involvement of
the show. I'd like to focus more on my production
career. Although I will still be doing monthly mixes for
Sprint (via Mspot) as well as probably
starting up on the mixtapes again, and of course the TOP
10 Hitlist I do on my website. So if you would like your
projects included please make sure you have me on your
mp3 list, etc."...
DJ
LoKash (WNHU-CT): "Shouts to everyone who's
been holdiing me down through this amazing transitional
period I've been in for the past month. Finals are here
and they're kicking my behind. Thankfully it will all be
over soon. I also will be moving to New Haven so I'll be
sending y'all some more new contact info for me. Once
again if you don't have my new cell phone number it's:
203.278.2776"...
Adam
L
(WMHB-ME):
"Just a quick note to let you know that I'll be posting
the Hip-Hop Nation playlists & WMHB station news every
Thursday after the show at
http://wmhbhiphop.blogspot.com, so make sure
you check it out, post comments, etc."...
