Dungy, Manning and the

Prince turned it out & rocked the house during

Black History Month: BLACK people in the
PHILIPPINES:
by By Runoko Rashidi - courtesy of
playahata.com
Although
the great majority of the people of the
Philippines
are Tagalog, the country is not ethnically
homogeneous. In spite of their small numbers the
original inhabitants of the Philippines are the Agta
(diminutive Africoids), who still live there in some
numbers and are commonly and pejoratively called
Pygmies, Negritos and Aeta, and a
variety of other names based upon their specific locale.
In regards to phenotype, broadly speaking, the Agta can
be described as physically small and unusually short in
stature,dark-skinned, spiral-haired and broad-nosed.
They are an extremely ancient people and, I believe,
close
representatives of the world’s earliest modern humans.
Very similar groups of Black people in Asia reside in
relative small numbers in the Andaman Islands in the Bay
of Bengal in the Indian Ocean north of the Indonesian
island of Sumatra, and in northern Malaysia and southern
Thailand in Southeast Asia. In Thailand they are
commonly called
Sakai.
In Malaysia they have been called Orang Asli
(Original Man). Pejoratively they are known as Semang,
with the connotation of savage. It is very unfortunate
that the contributions of these small Black people to
monumental high-cultures characterized by urbanization,
metallurgy, agricultural science and scripts remain
essentially unexamined.
The presence of diminutive Africoids (whom
Chinese historians called “Black Dwarfs”) in early
southern China during the period of the Three Kingdoms
(ca. 250 C.E.) is recorded in the book of the Official
of the Liang Dynasty (502-556 C.E.). In Taiwan there are
recollections of a group of people now said to be
extinct called “Little Black Man.”
“They were described as short, dark-skinned people with
short curly hair….These people, presumably Negritos,
disappeared about 100 years ago. Their existence was
mentioned in many Chinese documents of the Ching Dynasty
concerning Taiwan.”
The Agta men amassed quite a reputation as warriors, and
although the accuracy of the report is somewhat
questionable, it is said that the Agta were “such
enemies to the Spaniards, that if they happen to kill
one, they invite all their kindred, and rejoice for
three days, drinking out of the skull, clear’d for that
purpose; by which means, they afterwards get wives the
easier, as being more courageous.”
Dr. Pedro A. Gagelonia, a Filipino scholar,
citing the commentaries of the European colonizers of
the Philippines regarding the Agta, wrote that:
“They were the aborigines of the Philippines, and for a
long time had been master of Luzon. At a time not very
far distant, when the Spaniards conquered the country,
the Aetas levied a kind of blackmail from the Tagalog
villages situated on the banks of the lake of Bay
(Laguna de Bay). At a fixed period they quitted their
forests, entered the village, and forced the inhabitants
to give them a certain quantity of rice and maize….After
the conquest of the Philippines by the Spaniards, the
latter took upon themselves the defense of the Tagalogs,
and the Aetas, terrified by their firearms, remained in
the forests, and did not
reappear among the Indians.”
THE ERUPTIONS OF
MT.
PINATUBO
The violent volcanic eruptions of Mt. Pinutabo in June
1991 were particularly devastating for the
Agta.Alternately ignored and discriminated against, many
Agta lived on the slopes of the long-dormant volcano
that is regarded as the center of their cosmology.
Forced down the mountain slopes by the eruptions,
numbers of Agta, who have historically relied on the
herbal medicines now buried under tons of mud and ash,
have perished from dreadful epidemics of measles,
diarrhea and pneumonia.

name is Dj DePen, and I’m a DJ and the Urban Director
at WUSR Scranton, the college radio station for the
University of Scranton. I’ve had a passion for
Underground Hip Hop for just under a decade. This is
only my first year as the Urban Director, and I’m
putting
the “dire” back in the title because we are in dire need
of more music. The station used spin monthly promo’s
from any flavor of the month mainstream artist. I helped
initiate a station-wide policy to eliminate a wide
majority of top 40 mainstream artists. But since I
dropped the guillotine on years of tracks, I’m in a need
of music.
Artists underground and independent that support a
positive movement for Hip-Hop I want to play; I need to
play. WUSR Scranton holds the main listening audience
for the

airwaves to the new artists.

"Mr

sick of the snow in Colorado, one of the worst winters
ever. Its like they got us on national tv like a 3rd
world country. Next thing you know, we’ll be behind a
clear plexiglass as the tourists come by. Anyway, woes
of technology jacked me w/ my serato laptop taking a
dive. Not in the greatest of moods being without it for
3 weeks or so.
Ghetto highlight of the week #1:
Its always fun when I can get a photo to back up my
stories, cuz they’re all true. At a Mexican
bar/restaurant having a bite & they got a lil nastolgic
feel w/ nice old framed photos of famous people on the
walls. They also had a plaque telling people not to
steal them. Must have been a problem in the past. It
reads “if you like your pictures, PLEASE DON’T STEAL
THEM ask us & we will get copies for you.
Moral: You’re a ghetto bar owner when you put up
signs for people not to steal your stuff. Isn’t that a
given? Lemme put this sign on my car. Even better, put a
rolled joint next to it & say “please don’t steal this
joint, ask us to get one for you”. Anyway, I found it
funny"...

" I am getting lost on what Hip-Hop music is now,
reality shows with wanna be's. The vaporating of vinyl.
getting wax now is like finding the original 680el. The
station is now finally online streaming, but to the
campus only for security reasons. After we pass an
inspection by the board... we will only then see if
Hip-Hop will be aired. Most people in this world think
of it as devil music or something. pass the haterade
around.haha....www.weciradio.org...
Anilast
aka
Stuart de la Rosa (KSMT-CO): "What’s good
homie? Hope all is well with you and the infamous crew
that you run with. For me I am always causing some type
of rawkus, take for example this week my job asked if I
would do them the pleasure of DJing the Father
Daughter/Dance this Friday. Two Hours of playing Kids
Bop Music for $250.00 didn’t sound two bad of a gig
since I only get $20.00 for a 2 hour radio show ($17
after taxes) and only $125.00 at clu($75 after I drink
some Cran and Gooses). Plus they feed me and hopefully
there will be some hot ladies dancing around to the
theme song of Shrek that I programmed into my Roland 404
(too bad I don’t have it on wax to cut it up)!! What
else could I ask for; soon I am going to be hustling
birthday parties and barmitzfas to make my dough happen.
Keeping it gangsta!! As always you know that I am down
for interviews and station drops to help keep my show
grimy and nasty along with all the good music that I
spin.
Hit
me off when you have some time and let a brother know. I
just wanted to let you know that I haven’t received
anything from anyone yet. I just got some random
packages one from Jamaica, Queens and another parcel
with Moe and Tre feat one of the young
bloodz in it. I just haven’t seen the artist that you
have on your emails. One random thing is when I was
digging in the crates for last week show I found an old
school mud kids album so I rocked it nicely on the show.
I hope I am not being impatient I just wanted to see
what the deally was. holla back when you can. Much love
and respect………..D.I.T.C for Life………&………Disney for
Life"...
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH):
"Not that I have any room left in my apartment for more
of it, but 2007 might be the year that vinyl 12 inches
finally disappear from radio. I’m finding more and more
that I’m receiving servicing via MP3. Although I find
the format to be quick and convenient, I still pine for
those brown square boxes that used to arrive on my desk
in a seemingly inexhaustible flow. It’s pretty obvious
what artists/labels have to gain from MP3 servicing –
reduction of their budget. But I’m not sure they realize
the trade off. My station may be an anomaly, but at WUNH
we have built a breath taking musical library. Over the
past 30 years, we have collected the finest vinyl and
cds to have at our disposal. I can’t tell you how many
daytime and drive time spins I’ve garnered for hip hop
records by having a hard copy 12” or cd with full
artwork to leave in the stacks within our building.
Something about a generic CD-R full of MP3s just isn’t
eye-catching to the other DJs. I miss the Dirty,
Instrumental, and Acapella that I used to get. I miss
the b-side that is better that the a-side that I used to
get. I miss the production credits, and I miss knowing
who does that guest shot verse. It’s tough to talk about
the artist on the air when all you have to go on is
“YoungJackOff-CheckHowIBeatIt-Clean.mp3”. We don’t use
Serato, or any other MP3 based software for airplay. We
might be behind the times, but I’d rather be writing the
play list rather than having “Win amp” write it for me…
I’m
not sure if it was recorded specifically for the
commercial or not, but can you argue that the Juelz
Santana song in that basketball ad is the best thing
out of the Diplomats camp in a long time? (Author’s
note: Yes, I have “We Fly High” in my party crate too. A
hot hook does not constitute a well rounded recording).
Mind
blowing fact of the week: Reading XXL I
learned that Ghostface Killah has a 19 year old
son named “Sun God”. Wonder how he came up with
that name? And 19 years old? I don’t know how old
Ghostface really is, but if this kid’s really 19, I’m
betting that GFK must have been laying pipe when he was
12. God bless him!\ Okay, enough with the
mourning for Barbaro. I’m admittedly not an
animal lover, but it seems like people are grieving for
him more than Gerry Ford. He was a horse who
lived a very pampered and above average life. I’m pretty
sure he was satisfied. I don’t need him on every
newscast 24 hours a day. Let’s just turn him over to the
Elmer’s glue people and be done with
it"...
