What's
upper? Happy belated Mothers Day!... HBO's
"Sopranos" & "Entourage" are both kickin' butt this
season... This weeks' "American Idols" is gonna be a
good one! My boy Blake outta my hometown in
Seattle,
was back home over the weekend & did a beatbox set with
my former potnah, Sir Mix-A-Lot in front of a
crowd of thousands! I predict it'll be between
Melinda & Jordin... I can't lie, but
VH-1's "Celebrity Fit Club" is
kinda addicting to watch. I grew up havin' a crush on
Marcia Brady, I was one of the first dj's to break
Da Brat, Tiffany & Warren G on the
radio up in Seattle & homeboy & yes I did watch "Saved
By The Bell" & Screech is someone I love to hate!
LOL... "Shrek 3" premiere's this Friday, May
18th!!!...

May 19th 2007 the Native Guns will perform their
final show as a group in Honolulu, Hawaii. With four
years of dedication to each other and the community,
Bambu and Kiwi have mutually decided to
continue their careers as solo artists. The critically
acclaimed LA/Bay Area based Hip Hop group has stirred
the West Coast music industry into seeing the potential
of what artists with talent and a message can achieve.
This announcement comes on the one-year anniversary of
their debut album "Barrel Men", which has brought the
Native Guns an array of accomplishments. From community
events, nationwide touring, features on the world famous
wakeup show, and winning mp3.com's "Get Exposed"
contest, the Native Guns helped pave the road for
Filipino and Asian Pacific Islander artists in the
entertainment industry.
"We can't say enough about how much we appreciate the
support of our family, community, and everyone who has
shown us love everywhere we've gone," says Native Guns.
"We're extremely excited about continuing this work
through our solo projects."
Both Kiwi and Bambu will focus on solo albums as well as
collaborations with other artists, allowing them to
continue developing their art form and grow as
individuals. Bambu's second solo album "...i scream bars
for the children..." was released on April 29, 2007.
Kiwi will release his mixtape "Summer Exposure" in June,
followed by his yet-to-be-titled sophomore album late
fall 2007, DJ Phatrick will continue to
collaborate with both artists and venture into solo
projects and music production.
About Native Guns: Native Guns consists of
California-bred, Filipino MCs Kiwi and Bambu who have
been working together since 2002, with DJ Phatrick
joining the group in 2005. Combining their passion for
music & word with their love for community, and their
commitment to turning the system upside down, Native
Guns' fearless mix of hard-hitting beats, machine-gun
lyricism, and unapologetic critical content continues to
captivate audiences nationwide...

Taylored for the DJs, log on now! Here's what
GigaCrates.com is all about:
Gigacrate
caters to DJs, music enthusiasts and artists alike by
providing unique services that address their specific
evolving needs. These needs are currently not being met
with current retail and online music store models.
Our
market is comprised of three different overall groups
and several subgroups or market segments which we will
discuss later. The overall groups are A) digital DJs and
music enthusiasts, B) musicians/record labels and C)
gear related manufacturing companies.
In
1999, DJ turntables became the first instrument in a
century to outsell the guitar. Now they outsell every
kind of guitar by a ratio of two to one. Manufacturing
companies have sprouted up all over the place in the
past 10 years (Stanton,
Numark, Vestax, Rane, Technics,
Pioneer, Ecler, Shure, Gemini,
Denon, etc..) in an effort to capitalize on this
rapidly growing market. It is evident through the sheer
numbers of manufacturing companies, that there are
hundreds of thousands of DJs in the world today. In
fact, according to the
CIA World Factbook, there are about 44,000 radio
stations worldwide! Record Labels and Manufacturing
companies are few in number, but have significant
capital backing and are often interested in
cross-marketing their products with other DJ related
products and services.
In a
recent article Tom Ryan, Senior Vice President
of digital and mobile strategy development for
EMI Music, points out that "There are a large number
of people who need guidance from tastemakers to learn
about music". In the music world, the DJ is this
tastemaker. Record labels and artists have long
understood that the DJ is the cornerstone and therefore
spend lots of money marketing directly to DJs in an
effort to help spread the word about their music to the
people. Traditionally DJs purchased vinyl to play on
turntables. However, with the advent of technologies
such as
Final Scratch,
Serato Scratch Live and various CDJs, DJs are now
making the switch to digital media. While digital music
sites are nothing new (iTunes, Napster,
etc..), there are hardly any digital music sites that
cater specifically to the digital DJ. These DJs need
songs in multiple formats such as instrumental, acapella,
radio/clean, and dirty. DJs also need songs to be
properly tagged with more info than a normal listener
would require. Things like genre, release year, label
and BPM are essential bits of information.
There
are some 355 online music sellers, according to a report
by the
International Federation of the Phonographic Industry
released in Jan of 2006, and their revenues tripled to
$1.1 billion in 2005. Napster recently announced that it
has 500,000 subscribers and more than $100 million in
cash. Emi chairman, Eric Nicoli states "To talk about
dominance this early in the game is short-sighted. It's
not a five year game, it's a 30 or 40 year game." All of
the major players (Apple, Real Networks,
Napster and EMI) are not even going for the markets we
are discussing above. There is a huge void currently and
thus an opportunity for success"...

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Bri-G
(Mixtape/RPM-New
York): "I love Joell Ortiz...no homo. To me, he's
pretty much taken the baton as NYC's next great rapper
after
Saigon
decided to never make a radio friendly record. If
Joell's "The Brick" album came out 12 years ago, it'd be
Gold already. However, people don't get a chance to
listen to real Hip Hop music anymore, so they don't know
it's available to buy. Can anybody let somebody know
that Keep on Callin w/ Akon is a hit and might
want to start doing something with it? With that said...
Def
Jam
laid
off 40 people the other day. Warner Music is set
to lay off over 400 throughout the summer. So what does
this tell you about the overall state of the music
industry? Basically it says that everyone and everything
is disposable...the music, the employees, the artists,
they're all disposable. Radio spins no longer equate to
record sales. Unk can have a #1 record, but
nobody wants to here 16 tracks of Walk It Out sounding
crap. At what point to people look at the A&R
departments who sign these artists based solely off
spins (several of which can be considered "fake spins"
if you know what I mean), and say enough is enough.
Everybody's incredibly quick to blame the big bad
internet and all those people illegally downloading
music. But, let's just think about some things.
1.)
People have always shared music. How many times did you
dub your friends Low End Theory tape?
2.)
Before downloading, we used to simply record the song
right off the radio
3.)
With radio playlists getting smaller and college radio
drying up, where are people expected to go to hear new
and different music, even if they are getting it for
free.
4.)
DJ Clue used to literally put half of certain rappers'
albums on his Mixtapes, but for some reason people still
bought the album to hear more.
At
the end of the day, it's all about quality music. I
truly believe that people are being laid off these days
because the quality of music has greatly evaporated. If
someone is making great music, there's always someone
who is willing to listen to it. This creates revenue
streams beyond just record sales and ring tones.
However, we're at a point now where corporations are
scared to get in bed with Hip-Hop artists. Why would
someone pay a rapper like Mims a multimillion
dollar deal to endorse their product when he can't sell
his own album?
Ringtones are the newest get rich quick scheme, but you
can break that down relatively easily. T-Mobile
sells me ringtones for $1.99. I'd imagine that's a 50/50
venture between T-mobile and whatever label provided the
content, so you're left with $1. After the label,
management, recouping costs and other expenses are
factored it, what is the artist left with? Maybe 30
cents or so? So if you sell a million ring tones, that's
$300,000 in your pocket which is a nice chunk of change.
However, for 90% of these artists, this is the only
money they're going to make. They're albums don't sell
and they rarely get paid for shows (with the exception
of someone like Lil Boosie who makes a killing on
shows).
So
there it is. You just had a rap career that cost your
label a couple million in marketing and promotions, but
you only sold 100,000 albums so anything you made went
right to them to recoup your advance. Luckily, you had a
radio hit that sold a million ring tones so you made a
few hundred grand off that. But, you need to look fresh
at all times so you dropped 50k on a new chain and some
fronts, 100k on cars, and now you have to pay 50k a year
for people to watch your back for you. Congrats, you're
left with 100k and you still need to find a place to
live, eat, and support your sneaker habit.
All
this because some A&R somewhere read BDS and saw
that your spins were really high on some record you've
been pushing independently for over a year. But
seriously, in the spirit of the Mayweather/De
La Hoya snooze fest (which if you look at last
week's email, I perfectly predicted).
Here
are 5 rappers I'm pretty sure I could take in a fight.
As long as no entourages or gun play were involved: Any
member of Onyx, Prodigy, Ja Rule,
Bow Wow (I would actually enjoy this) and
Ludacris
Here's 5 rappers who would probably kick the shit out of
me: 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross,
Timbaland & The Game.
Here's 5 rappers who I think would make a fairly even
fight. These would have to go to the judges: T.I.,
Lil Wayne, Rich Boy, Tony Yayo &
Ice Cube (post 1997, happy friendly Cube)!

(KHDC-CA):What
a difference a day can make. Within the course of 24
hours, the Bay Area is on fire with everyone hyped that
both the Warriors & Sharks in the
playoffs, to being midly enthused after the Sharks were
eliminated by
Detroit
and
the Warriors dropping the first game to
Utah.
Honestly though, I've never been a huge fan of either.
Sure, I've went to plenty of games. But you won't see me
painting my face anytime soon. Unless my Raiders
make the Superbowl of course. LOL.
Last week I mentioned that I thought that Young Buck
should make it a point to steer clear of any jewelry
after he got into more legal trouble involving another
necklace. Now I have to speak up and once again to
request that Busta Rhymes stay away from driving.
To sum it up, he got busted for a DUI last week and also
recently got busted for driving with a suspened license.
Talk about "Woo Hah"!
Have to say, Spiderman 3 was pretty damn good.
Sand Man was great. Speaking of great, how about the
Soprano's? I know some people think that the past
couple weeks episodes have been lackluster but I don't
agree. They're building to a real explosion and it's
gonna get crazy. Watch, you'll see"...

(WUNH-NH):
"I’m pretty thrilled that Paris Hilton is going
to prison. I know – it’s going to be only 45 days and
she won’t be in general population. But seeing spoiled
celebrities fall from grace is a small ray of sunshine
in my otherwise gloomy day. When the rich and famous
fall off their pedestal, plummet past the mundane middle
class where I dwell, and land amidst an institution full
of convicts, it restores a little faith in me that
someone above is watching over it all. And that she
might make more sex tapes. WOMEN’S PRISON sex tapes
(don’t pretend like you’re not excited by the
possibility).
I’m
going to enjoy Roger Clemens coming back to
Fenway as he returns to baseball reprising his role
as cash glutton / whore for hire, a role he first
assumed leaving the Red Sox for Toronto. And when
he is shelled in his first outing, I will smile a
shit-eating grin, bigger than the one I sported when
watching the video of David Hasselhoff trying to
eat a hamburger.
I
guess I wasn’t one of the people who shelled out 150
million dollars to see “Spiderman 3” this past
weekend. I suppose the thrill of seeing my beloved child
hood comics on the silver screen dulled when a movie
from this genre started to arrive every 2 months. I
can’t wait until they get through all the A-List comics
and next summer we are stuck going to a live action
version of “Archie” or “Family Circus”.
And how have they fronted on Captain America this
long? Sheesh…the guy only battled Nazis…and saved the
globe in WWII. I didn’t see Spiderman or the X-Men
up in that mug.
So
Akon was dropped as an endorser by Verizon
for simulating sex in a provocative dance with a 15 year
old girl he brought up on stage in Trinidad. I found
this ironic as I read an adjacent story entitled “R.
KELLY – 5 YEARS, 6 ALBUMS, NO TRIAL”. So Verizon,
I’d take my finger off the panic button until Akon
pisses in somebody’s face. Or until he goes over to
David Hasselhoff’s for a burger"...
