What's
upper? This Wednesday we will have a new American Idol!
I have to vote for Blake cause he's outta my
hometown of
Seattle
& I vowed that I'd rep the "206" for life! Good luck to
both Blake & Jordin... Have you heard Kilo
"Lean Like A Cholo" track yet? Dayum, I can't get this
track outta my head...
Much
props to Russell Simmons who took time out of his
busy schedule & hang with our dj's on last Thursday's
RAP ATTACK CONFERENCE CALL. Both Russell & I
reminiced to the early 80's when Def Jam serviced
me with their debut T La Rock "It's Yours" single
& the Duke Burzutti (did I spell that correct?)
single. Wow how time flies. Russell's new book "Do You"
is on the Best Seller list & he shared a lot of positive
light with us on acheiving our goals. To sum up what I
got from this icon is what I've always believed & that's
to be honest, do what you LOVE doing, put GOD as
the center & focused part of your life & have faith. I
can't wait to start reading my copy of, "Do You!" I
highly recommend you pick up a copy. Russell also
endorsed the new Jinx Da Juvy "Strong Enough"
single that's about to drop. You will be hearing more
about this joint so stay tuned. Thanks again to Russell
Simmons & also to Big Phil...

Austin'
own DJ's Mike Swing, Nick Nack &
Protege have started up:
www.GigaCrate.com.
Taylored for the DJs, log on now! Here's what
GigaCrates.com is all about:
Gigacrate caters to DJs, music enthusiasts and artists
alike by providing unique services that address their
specific evolving needs. These needs are currently not
being met with current retail and online music store
models.
Our
market is comprised of three different overall groups
and several subgroups or market segments which we will
discuss later. The overall groups are A) digital DJs and
music enthusiasts, B) musicians/record labels and C)
gear related manufacturing companies.
In
1999, DJ turntables became the first instrument in a
century to outsell the guitar. Now they outsell every
kind of guitar by a ratio of two to one. Manufacturing
companies have sprouted up all over the place in the
past 10 years (Stanton,
Numark, Vestax, Rane, Technics,
Pioneer, Ecler, Shure, Gemini,
Denon, etc..) in an effort to capitalize on this
rapidly growing market. It is evident through the sheer
numbers of manufacturing companies, that there are
hundreds of thousands of DJs in the world today. In
fact, according to the
CIA World Factbook, there are about 44,000 radio
stations worldwide! Record Labels and Manufacturing
companies are few in number, but have significant
capital backing and are often interested in
cross-marketing their products with other DJ related
products and services.
In a
recent article Tom Ryan, Senior Vice President
of digital and mobile strategy development for
EMI Music, points out that "There are a large number
of people who need guidance from tastemakers to learn
about music". In the music world, the DJ is this
tastemaker. Record labels and artists have long
understood that the DJ is the cornerstone and therefore
spend lots of money marketing directly to DJs in an
effort to help spread the word about their music to the
people. Traditionally DJs purchased vinyl to play on
turntables. However, with the advent of technologies
such as
Final Scratch,
Serato Scratch Live and various CDJs, DJs are now
making the switch to digital media. While digital music
sites are nothing new (iTunes, Napster,
etc..), there are hardly any digital music sites that
cater specifically to the digital DJ. These DJs need
songs in multiple formats such as instrumental, acapella,
radio/clean, and dirty. DJs also need songs to be
properly tagged with more info than a normal listener
would require. Things like genre, release year, label
and BPM are essential bits of information.
There
are some 355 online music sellers, according to a report
by the
International Federation of the Phonographic Industry
released in Jan of 2006, and their revenues tripled to
$1.1 billion in 2005. Napster recently announced that it
has 500,000 subscribers and more than $100 million in
cash. Emi chairman, Eric Nicoli states "To talk about
dominance this early in the game is short-sighted. It's
not a five year game, it's a 30 or 40 year game." All of
the major players (Apple, Real Networks,
Napster and EMI) are not even going for the markets we
are discussing above. There is a huge void currently and
thus an opportunity for success"...

several ballers in the industry are saying bout Planet

“The West Coast Rap Revolution has officially begun.

DJ Muggs (Angeles Records)
“Planet Asia is one of the rawest talents in the rap
game and still unspoiled by the industry and any of it’s
bullshit agenda. Rap for the love of the art. I look
forward to every chance I get to work with the brother.”
Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas)

American Idol representing Bothell and Seattle. It was
great to hear him perform "Baby Got Back" with Sir
Mix A Lot and bring RA Scion (from Common
Market) up on stage as well at the noon time concert
at Westlake Center (thanks for recognizing me in that
huge crowd). Big Shoutout to the Blaker Girls fan site
for keeping everyone in the loop on what is going on"...
Bri-G
(Mixtape/RPM-New
York): "2007 is the year the 1980's officially came back
in style. Kanye, Pharrell and Puff
may have been trying to bring it back for the last
couple years, but it hasn't really been a movement until
the last few months, when you can see the kids really
rockin' with it. I've noticed over the last month or so,
kids in New York are really trying to make Hip Hop fun
again this summer. Out are the baggy jeans and
timberland boots that have been a
New
York
staple for so many years and in come shrink-to-fit
Levis
and multi colored Nike Dunks. Young kids in
New
York
have taken a page out of the Southern Snap Music
movement and have decided to go back to their own roots
of Hip Hop.
All
through Harlem, you can see kids listening to what is
known as "Aunt Jackie" music. You got your first
taste of it last summer during the Chicken Noodle Soup
frenzy. It's more Sugar Hill Gang than Wu-Tang.
But it's fun, it's kids dancing in the street, and it's
rappers going back and forth rockin' a party like it's
1980 in the South Bronx. Hey, it's Hip Hop.
Listen, I'm not exactly going to be the first one in
line to check out a Jason Fox show and see a
bunch of 16 year olds dancing around, but for the first
time in a while, I'm actually starting to understand it.
All these kids really just want to have fun. When I DJ'd
in Brooklyn last week, I was amazed to see a
breakdancing contest erupt on the middle of the dance
floor. Real, true, breakdancing. Kids in a circle, with
two going a time battling each other.
These
kids are embracing the hip hop culture all over again. A
few years ago, breakdancing used to be something you'd
see as a side show when you were trying to catch the 6
train at
Union
Square,
now it's happening in the clubs.
I've
got a few theories as to where this all came from. Much
of it is probably in response to Snap Music and its
short lived, but enormous grip that it had on rap music
for over a year. Kids in
New
York
wanted their own thing, their own slang and their own
style. It's something that's been missing here for
years. How could
New
York,
the birthplace of Hip Hop, lose its identity? The south
had the snapping D-Boys, the West had Hyphy, and what
did
New
York have except for a bunch of guys beefing with each
other?
So
what's the best way to regain your identity, regain your
place in a culture the moved in without you? You take it
back; you go back to the roots, the essence of what made
you. You rock shows in the park, you do dumb little fun
dances and you make it 1982 all over again.
Like
everything in life, Hip Hop has to go in cycles in order
to maintain its hold on a culture. We've been through
Sugar Hill, Busy Bee, Kool Moe Dee,
Rakim,
KRS,
PE,
NWA, Wu Tang, 2Pac, Snoop,
Biggie, Jay, Lil Jon, Kanye and
Young Jeezy. All constant changes in sound, style,
and lyrical content. It's only right that after all
that, we would have to start all over, only with a
little more modern flair.
Eventually, it'll change again. Eventually there will
be a new Rakim, a new KRS, and hopefully a new Public
Enemy who can bring Hip Hop with a message to a
mainstream audience. I don't know if we'll ever see the
perfect storm of talent/charisma like we had from
'93-'96, but it'll change. It'll get better. For now
though, it's time for these kids to have fun and do
their dumb little dances. Just don't let me catch
anybody over 25 doing it.
This
week's YouTube pick of the week is dedicated to
breakdancing...and baby kicking:

(KGNU-CO):
Ghetto highlight of the week:
At a bar this past weekend arguing with a guy about
music while I’m spinning. He’s adamant that we need an
officer at the door (it’s a swank place) to play good
Houston
style hip hop (aka tons of more crunk way past lil jon
style). He later got thrown out for being to vulgar w/
the girls at the bar. Guess we only needed it for him.
Moral:
You’re ghetto when you go into an establishment trying
to convince the manager that better music requires an
office to keep out the trouble makers. Too bad he fell
into his own category, even if we did have a badge at
the door"...
Solo
(WECI-IN):
"I am calling my reporting days to a close. Numerous
reasons apply, but the main one is my family needs me
right now. My wifes stress level is thru the roof and my
daughters autism is wreckin havoc. I am moving into my
new house at the end of this month and I have a feeling
I will be without internet for a while. Verizon
is some slow ass bitches. As far as radio goes, I still
plan on rockin the airwaves like always, but you know as
I do the music industry isn't the same anymore. Hit me
up any time and take care"..
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA):
"So, as I basically expected, Golden State
dropped the ball (pun intended) and is out of the
playoffs. I wish I could be more supportive of the "home
team" but I just can't get into it.
Master P announced that he's giving up using
profanity in his lyrics. Who could even tell he was
using it to begin with? That marble mouth has yet to
make something remotely articulate. How about tryin to
say somthing we can actually understand? Then worry
about the language. Baby steps.
The Game got arrested for making criminal
threats. If that was the reason for the arrest,
shouldn't every single "rapper" on commercial radio be
arrested as well since it's all a bunch of knuckleheads
talking about what they're gonna do to this guy and that
guy? Thank god I have satellite in my car.
Maxim released their annual "Top 100" list
for 2007. My "baby momma" Jessica Alba came in at
number 2, just behind Lindsay Lohan who was
number one. Obvioulsy, I thoroughly disagree with this
ranking. And remember kids, Fantastic 4...Rise Of
The Silver Surfer comes out this Summer.
Finally, goodbye to Christopher on The Soprano's.
I was totally caught off guard when Tony put him
out of his misery after the car chash. But, in true
gangster fashion, Tony hops a plane to Vegas to get busy
with Christophers mistress. That's some evil shit. I
loved it. I don't really know what to think about AJ
starting down the path of his father. Hopefully it
gets explained a little more this coming week. I have a
strong feeling that Paulie Wallnuts is about to
join Christopher. We'll see. 3 episodes left"...

"Although I spent a nice Mother’s Day with my Mom, I had
to undergo that agonizing experience of buying flowers.
I hate going to the florist because I don’t know what
the flowers are or what they cost. I just want them to
give me something nice. But the lady insists on grilling
me about what my Mom is like, and do I want “Baby’s
Breath”. What the Christ is “Baby’s Breath”? I
thought it was something that came out of a little kid’s
mouth. So please lady, just make me up something nice,
and then rape me on my MasterCard. I don’t know
any better, and frankly, I don’t want to…
I’m
also sick of clerks trying to enroll me in their
“Rewards Program”, or doing it automatically and acting
like they gave me some kind of insider deal. I was
buying a new suit Saturday, and when the guy was ringing
it up, he pauses and says in a low and secretive tone
“You know, I just enrolled you in our Rewards Program.
You get blah blah blah amount of points for this suit,
and when you break blah blah blah points you get a
reeaaalllyy nice discount”. Yeah right. Am I wearing an
“I’m An Asshole” t-shirt? I guess that’s just like the
supermarket where they give you the sale price only if
you are in the Rewards Program. That’s like me offering
to buy a girl a drink at an open bar. Years ago they
used to give it to you for nothing, and send a flyer to
your house advertising it. The bottom line: the only
thing they are going to reward me with is junk mail and
e-mail blasts. And I already get plenty of those…that
aren’t porn related. Seriously. Okay, not really.
“Amusment Park”? Sorry 50. If I wanted to listen
to records that sounded like a demented carnival, I
would buy an ICP album. I’ve heard a few of the
leaked tracks from the forthcoming “Curtis”
album, and they sound about as lively as Jerry
Falwell. Sorry, too soon?"...

less. Really enjoying the Krs One and Marley
Marl single looking forward to the album. The
Phils are still the Phils and everything is
everything.
Ran into Stephen and Damien Marley this
past week. They were like 800 deep but cool for the most
part.It was quite interesting having all these 2am phone
calls
at the hotel from females looking for them"...
