A Conversation with the God-Rakim
by Davey D
The other night after he simply killed it at
San Francisco's Mezzanine Night club, we sat down and
spoke with the man who many consider to be the greatest
emcee of all-times. We're talking about Rakim aka the
18th Letter. No we didn't get into the over-played
conversation about why he and Dr. Dre never completed
that highly anticipated album. Instead we got his take
on the current state of Hip Hop and how he feels about
today's crop of emcees. He talked about the love he has
for artist like Lupe Fiasco. Contrary to what many Hip
Hop purists would like to hear him say, 'the R' talked
about how it was important to hear people embrace and
reflect their unique regional backgrounds. In other
words its not productive to hear everyone trying to
sound like a cat from New York and he wasn't about to
start classifying people as rap vs Hip Hop etc. He
agreed with the assessment that much of this labeling
comes from journalists who like to act like papparazzi.
He talked about the ways in which Hip Hop has evolved
overseas.
We talked to Rakim about his upcoming album which will
be released on his own independent label. He noted that
he put on his CEO cap and brought forth some great
surprises that Hip Hop is in dire need for. He wouldn't
offer up too many details, but he promised that folks
will be absolutely pleased.
He also touched upon the mindset he has when it comes to
writing rhymes. He's an avid jazz fan and for those who
don't know, Rakim is a trained saxaphone player. He said
that he composes songs much like jazz musician and that
each word uttered has to fit nicely within the notes of
a song. His smoothness is attributed to him rapping the
way he feels sax player would blow notes. He also talked
about the importance of taking time to write songs and
bring forth inspiring and meaningful lyrics.
We also touched upon the topic of gangsterism and
gangsta rap. For those who aren't familiar, when Rakim
came up he was around some of New York's most notorious
gangstas. The back cover of his Paid in Full
album, show folks like the Original 50 Cent. He
explained that he never felt a need to talk about other
people's gang tales because he didn't want to exploit
their situations. Nor did he want to bring unnecessary
heat on folks. He said he was well aware of the madness
that went on around him but it was important to keep
street stuff on the streets and not broadcast it on wax.
In other words real bad boys don't tell no tales.
We concluded with Rakim talking about politics and
conscious raising music. he said he wasn't the type of
cat to look at an event and write about it. he said his
consciousness was more organic and heartfelt his day to
day living.
We felt blessed and enlightened and so should you after
you peep this incredible interview that was done by
myself and collegue Sam Chennault of SF Weekly and
Rhapsody Music...

crossed with "Meet the Press" for the Hip-Hlture --
that's the potent formula behind "SpitFire," a new talk
show hosted by rap pioneer Kool Mo Dee.
The show is an offshoot of IAmHipHop.com,
a recently launched social networking site.
Concentrating on all things Hip-Hhe portal (www.iamhiphop.com)
will also begin posting three- to five-minute segments
of various "SpitFire" episodes at the end of November.
Taped before a studio audience in Los Angeles, "SpitFire"
finds a suit-and-tied Kool Mo Dee orchestrating a lively
discussion with three special guests. For instance, the
sixth episode (taped October 30) featured MC Lyte,
radio/TV personality Tavis Smiley and Public
Enemy frontman Chuck D.
The trio dug into such issues as the absence of black
political leadership today, whether there is a willful
silencing of social and political messages in hip-hop
music and Lyte's decision to participate in VH1's
"Celebrity Rap Superstar" series. (Kool Mo Dee passed on
the same offer.)
At one point, Smiley directed a pointed question to
young black America: "Is there anyone in the public
sphere who you believe would be willing to die for you
in the way Martin Luther King and Malcolm X
did?"
"This is about the evolution of Hip-Hop and representing
its culture," says Alex Avant, chief networking
officer and partner in I Am Hip Hop.Com.
Anyone affiliated with the Hip-Hop culture --
new-school/old-school artists, managers, agents,
lawyers, graffiti artists -- are potential guests.
Noting that Kool Mo Dee had long harbored the dream of
being a talk-show host, Avant adds, "Hopefully, this
show and the site will become key sources for people to
find new Hip-Hop artists."
Earlier episodes of the 90-minute show (which includes
about 20 minutes of audience Q&A) brought together such
guests as Doug E. Fresh, Warren G,
Xzibit, Run-D.M.C.'s Darryl McDaniels,
clothing designer Karl Kanai, the Sugarhill
Gang's Master Gee and author/former Billboard
columnist Nelson George. Topics range
from fashion/imaging and use of the "N" word to
assessing an artist's social responsibility and what
constitutes as selling out.
Primarily African-American with a 20% mix of Hispanics
and Caucasians, the "SpitFire" audience falls between 18
and 51 years old. Avant says two to three more tapings
are planned for this inaugural cycle. During the hiatus,
the shortened segments will begin running on
IAmHipHop.com. "God willing, after that," Avant says,
"viewers will able to watch 'SpitFire' on a television
network"...
Just
peeped out the new DVD, "Jay-Z Reasonable Doubt."
While heads are all feeling his "American Gangster"
album, you may want to pick this dvd up for your own
Jay-Z collection or better yet as a stocking stuffer for
the upcoming X'Mas holiday. "Reasonable Doubt" takes a
close & unusual look at how & why "Reasonable Doubt" was
made. It shows cameos with fellow producers Premier,
Irv Gotti, Clark Kent, Knowbody,
Shawn Cane & Ski. These kats show on screen
on how they brought their creative talents to the table
from their studio. Other contributors featured on this
dvd are Mary J. Blige, Foxy Brown,
Memphis Bleek, Kanye West & Biggie.
This dvd features new interviews, rare performance
footage & home movies. Featured songs include "Can't
Knock The Hustle," "Ain't No Nigga," "Brooklyn's
Finest," "Dead Presidents 2," "D'evils, Can I LivE,"
"Regrets" & more. Jay-Z adds, "This is one of my classic
albums that told a story & is encrypted with codes. An
album you have to really listen to." For more info holla

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Damian Rodriguez (KGNU-CO): "Sup ya’ll.
Super dad duty has me on lockdown these days. Q’bert
has come, & Rakim is coming. Rakim hasn’t been
here in like 9years since the realease of the R album.
So it’d be dope to see him. Devin the dude shows
up for a show at
1.45
am,
15 min before bar closing and expects drinks & people to
be happy. I love devin, but c’mon, why do all rappers do
this? Its lame. An hour+ is acceptable, but 1.45?
c’mon….this is part of the reason why Hip-Hop is at a
low point right now. Go peep Chris Rock’s recent
statements about the current state. All the real heads
receiving this, know what I’m talking about.
Ghetto highlight of the week:
(Papa D will appreciate this one)
On
way to the rockies game while they were playing the
diamond backs, I was wondering where the brooms were for
the sweep. I found a mexican guy selling burritos,
drinks, and brooms in the truck bed. Leave it to our
fellow latinos w/ hookups and cousins who have
connections/working in the janitorial industry to get
about 300+ brooms. I dont think you could even go to
home depot or sams club & get that many.
Moral:
You're ghetto fab when you see an opportunity to hustle
brooms along w/ your usual side hustle of burritos. :)
Gotta love the man for knowing about "THE LAND OF
OPPORTUNITY"...
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH):
"I guess Christmas is flying towards us at lightning
speed. I was in Wal-Mart the other day buying
crap and they were already playing Christmas music. A
little overboard in my opinion. Christmas music
shouldn't start until Thanksgiving ends. On my way out
of the store they had a giant poster for the new
Garth Brooks album "The Ultimate Hits - 3 CD Set".
Admittedly, I haven't been up to speed on Garth's
catalog lately, but I'm skeptical that he has 3 CDs of
"Ultimate" hits. I'm guessing I could fit all of
Garth's, Skee Lo's, Tone Loc's, and
Young MC's ultimate hits on one disc and still have
room left over...
I can't be too hard on Garth though, as the Hip-Hop
majors are already churning out lackluster greatest hits
packages for the holiday season. Columbia's
packed Nas' most nauseating singles with one
measly new track ("Surviving The Times"), while
Interscope thinks we will buy (2) different 2Pac
greatest hits CDs to get the a sole new bonus track
that can be found on each one. They shoud just save the
packaging and marketing and put the unreleased joints on
iTunes for $14.99 each.
I took in both "American Gangster"s this past weekend.
I'd stick with Denzel over Jay. Plus, it
was kind of Denzel to give Fab 5 Freddy a cameo.
He needs the work"...
D-Tragic
(805HipHop.com):
"Hey FAM – Do you listen into the “World Famous Wake Up
Show” w/ King Tech, Sway and DJ
Revolution? If so check out Roc-C in the
newest session. Tech and Sway have compared him to the
likes of Biggie and Pac……Now you are gonna
HAVE to listen in to this session done in July.

few new cuts from the album on it.

: "Truly a great week last week as I had the chance to
see & meet the legend himself, Rakim. I was in
awe standing face to face with a guy whose records I had
spent years and years practicing backspinning and
cutting back in 86 / 87. If you hear of the Rakim /

working on problems and your boy did not get to sleep
until 10am on Sunday morning. The new year best be
bringing me a new job or something. DAMN... on a
different note check that American Gangsta movie out if
you haven't. It's a good movie, but could have been
better, or at least had more "truth" to it. I know it's
been tweaked up by
Hollywood,
but this dude was wild, and didn't get get a whole lot
of that on this film, I guess I was expecting more. I
did hear on the major urban station this morning that
the real life Frank is going to get PAID off this
movie, and has plans for a video game, clothing line,
and maybe a sequel... WOW.. only in America!"...
