Born in the Bronx -A Visual Record of the Early Days of
Hip Hop
(see photo of book above)
Edited by Johan Kugelberg
Photographs by Joe Conzo
Foreword by Afrika Bambaataa
Original Flyer Art by Buddy Esquire
Timeline by Jeff Chang
Born in the Bronx is a striking anthology of Hip
Hop's baby steps. Not only does it capture the emergence
of a burgeoning culture but also the fashion and
character of the surrounding community. From rare
photographs of MC's and DJs to records, flyers, and
other ephemera, writer Johan Kugelberg has pulled
together the scattered remains of a movement that never
has its eye on posterity. The book includes the
improvisational artwork of previously unpublished street
flyers of the era, Polaroids buried for decades in
basements across the
Bronx,
and testimonials from the most scholarly historians of
Hip Hop culture - the legends and pioneers who lived it!
Through Born in the
Bronx,
Joe Conzo (described by The New York Times as "the
chronicler who took hip hop's baby pictures") presents a
unique cross-section of an explosive and experimental
time in music history.
- Hip Hop's first photographer, Joe Conzo provides the
majority of images of legends and urban scenes from
1977-1982. Additional photos were contributed by fellow
pioneering documentarians Charlie Ahearn and Henry
Chalfant.
- Photos feature The Cold Crush Brothers, Treacherous 3,
Afrika Bambaataa, Busy Bee, Run DMC, Wayne "The Hip Hop
Ventriliquist" & Charlie, Fantastic Romantic,
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Funky Four + 1,
Kool DJ AJ Scratch, GrandWizzard Theodore and more.
- Flyers created by Buddy Esquire feature Hip Hop jams
from 1978-1985. Obscure flyers advertise early Hip Hop
jams in
Brooklyn, Queens and even Connecticut!
- Essays were contributed by legends: GrandMaster Caz,
JDL, Joe Conzo, Mare 139,
GrandWizzard Theodore,
LA Sunshine and Jorge "Fabel" Pabon plus a poem by DJ
Disco Wiz and an interview with Buddy Esquire.
- The hard cover is embossed. The dust cover unfolds to
reveal a poster: "The Hip Hop Map of the
Bronx"
by Joe Conzo and Tony Tone...

A Conversation with the God-Rakim
by Davey D
The other night after he simply killed it at
San Francisco's Mezzanine Night club, we sat down and
spoke with the man who many consider to be the greatest
emcee of all-times. We're talking about Rakim aka the
18th Letter. No we didn't get into the over-played
conversation about why he and Dr. Dre never completed
that highly anticipated album. Instead we got his take
on the current state of Hip Hop and how he feels about
today's crop of emcees. He talked about the love he has
for artist like Lupe Fiasco. Contrary to what many Hip
Hop purists would like to hear him say, 'the R' talked
about how it was important to hear people embrace and
reflect their unique regional backgrounds. In other
words its not productive to hear everyone trying to
sound like a cat from New York and he wasn't about to
start classifying people as rap vs Hip Hop etc. He
agreed with the assessment that much of this labeling
comes from journalists who like to act like papparazzi.
He talked about the ways in which Hip Hop has evolved
overseas.
We talked to Rakim about his upcoming album which will
be released on his own independent label. He noted that
he put on his CEO cap and brought forth some great
surprises that Hip Hop is in dire need for. He wouldn't
offer up too many details, but he promised that folks
will be absolutely pleased.
He also touched upon the mindset he has when it comes to
writing rhymes. He's an avid jazz fan and for those who
don't know, Rakim is a trained saxaphone player. He said
that he composes songs much like jazz musician and that
each word uttered has to fit nicely within the notes of
a song. His smoothness is attributed to him rapping the
way he feels sax player would blow notes. He also talked
about the importance of taking time to write songs and
bring forth inspiring and meaningful lyrics.
We also touched upon the topic of gangsterism and
gangsta rap. For those who aren't familiar, when Rakim
came up he was around some of New York's most notorious
gangstas. The back cover of his Paid in Full
album, show folks like the Original 50 Cent. He
explained that he never felt a need to talk about other
people's gang tales because he didn't want to exploit
their situations. Nor did he want to bring unnecessary
heat on folks. He said he was well aware of the madness
that went on around him but it was important to keep
street stuff on the streets and not broadcast it on wax.
In other words real bad boys don't tell no tales.
We concluded with Rakim talking about politics and
conscious raising music. he said he wasn't the type of
cat to look at an event and write about it. he said his
consciousness was more organic and heartfelt his day to
day living.
We felt blessed and enlightened and so should you after
you peep this incredible interview that was done by
myself and collegue Sam Chennault of SF Weekly and
Rhapsody Music...

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "I realized how
dead vinyl really is this past weekend. Twice a year,
our station does a "Vinyl Week" where we spin nothing
but vinyl for 7 days straight without exception. My
show, "The Mothership Connection", is 80% new music
every week. Looking through my record bag, I realized
that almost all of the new music I had was on CD (mostly
mp3 rips) and I hardly had enough new vinyl to make it
through an hour, let alone the three that my show spans.
So tonight I've tossed all new music to the side and
will be banging out mid-90's classics back to back. Now
if I can only find my 12" of "Tap The Bottle" by
Y.B.T., I'll be all set...
I found it funny this week that the Governor of Georgia
held a big prayer rally in hopes that God would
send rain to end the dangerous drought that is plaguing
the
Atlanta
area. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing God doesn't
have
Atlanta,
the strip club capitol of the northern hemisphere, too
high up on his priority list. The only person below
Atlanta on the list is Duane "Dog The Bounty
Hunter" Chapman. Just a hint Duane: Sometimes
honesty isn't the best policy. Especially when it comes
to "N" bombs.
Amid the slew of 4th quarter releases dropping in the
next month, the one that made me laugh out loud was
Hell Rell's "Eat With Me Or Eat A Box Of
Bullets". Well Rell, when you put it like that, how can
I resist eating with you? I'm not sure what the Dipset
triggerman was thinking when he dreamed up this gem, but
I'm sure that it won't outsell my new mixtape entitled
"Bang These Tracks, Or Bang A Syphilis Infected
Transvestite Hooker (Twice)"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
DAMN.. this semester is flying by fast.. I'm looking
forward to the end of this semester.. I can't believe
the holidays are right around the corner either.. damn,
didn't summer just end!!! Aiight this one is for
Edgie.. had the wife's family down visiting and
while they were here we took my brother in law out for
his 21st birthday.. at first no one really wanted to go
out, but once we got to the spot and got tipsy we ended
up having a good time.. now mind you, your boy is not a
big drinker, it's rare that I drink, but I drank that
night, and let's just say after 12 rounds (that's from
what I can piece together anyway) we are all wrecked,
but still very "happy" and could walk fine.. after the
club we head to the local IHOP and get breakfast and had
the spot laughing their asses off at us from cracking on
other more drunk customers walking into the wrong
bathrooms.. shit was hilarious.. then comes the dreaded
hang over.. HOLLY SHIT!!!! the last day the family was
here half of us were hung over big time, and hugging
that toilet like a champ.. I got muscles that hurt that
I haven't used in years.. just another reason your boy
doesn't drink much, but that night was a blast!! keep
the hits coming people, and if you got stuff the rest of
us don't have on our charts share the wealth"...
Nate
Abney (WKDU-Philly): "Another
week of highlights in Philly. I'm helping my brother
coach this high school team and I got two words for ya.
SUNSET PARK. The Kidz in the Hall/GZA show was
hot. I like how DJ Primetime was out there
killing it. He was playing some real quality stuff and
some people had the nerve to boo when he played Times Up
by OC. I wanted to use wrestling moves at that
point but I kept my composure. Kidz In The Hall set was
dope. Gza didn't come on until like an hour after that.
Once he got on he was dope. Being that he is my top 5
emcees of all time I thought it was a special treat for
sure. Number 1 Rakim is coming to Philly Nov 21st
and guess who's going to be there. Big Shouts to
Jessica at Spectre and Matt at
Major League for hooking a brother up. My birds get
an emotional win in DC. PSU took over the Linc
and the Sixers get smacked on the chin a
couple times this week"...
