Born in the Bronx -A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop (see photo of book above)
Edited by Johan Kugelberg
Photographs by Joe Conzo
Foreword by Afrika Bambaataa
Original Flyer Art by Buddy Esquire
Timeline by Jeff Chang

Born in the Bronx is a striking anthology of Hip Hop's baby steps. Not only does it capture the emergence of a burgeoning culture but also the fashion and character of the surrounding community. From rare photographs of MC's and DJs to records, flyers, and other ephemera, writer Johan Kugelberg has pulled together the scattered remains of a movement that never has its eye on posterity. The book includes the improvisational artwork of previously unpublished street flyers of the era, Polaroids buried for decades in basements across the
Bronx, and testimonials from the most scholarly historians of Hip Hop culture - the legends and pioneers who lived it! Through Born in the Bronx, Joe Conzo (described by The New York Times as "the chronicler who took hip hop's baby pictures") presents a unique cross-section of an explosive and experimental time in music history.
- Hip Hop's first photographer, Joe Conzo provides the majority of images of legends and urban scenes from 1977-1982. Additional photos were contributed by fellow pioneering documentarians Charlie Ahearn and Henry Chalfant.

- Photos feature The Cold Crush Brothers, Treacherous 3, Afrika Bambaataa, Busy Bee, Run DMC, Wayne "The Hip Hop Ventriliquist" & Charlie, Fantastic Romantic, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Funky Four + 1, Kool DJ AJ Scratch, GrandWizzard Theodore and more.
- Flyers created by Buddy Esquire feature Hip Hop jams from 1978-1985. Obscure flyers advertise early Hip Hop jams in
Brooklyn, Queens and even Connecticut!

- Essays were contributed by legends: GrandMaster Caz, JDL, Joe Conzo, Mare 139,
GrandWizzard Theodore, LA Sunshine and Jorge "Fabel" Pabon plus a poem by DJ Disco Wiz and an interview with Buddy Esquire.

- The hard cover is embossed. The dust cover unfolds to reveal a poster: "The Hip Hop Map of the
Bronx" by Joe Conzo and Tony Tone...

Just peeped out the new DVD, "Eminem Live From New York City" (Eagle Vision). Recorded live at NY's Madison Square Garden, Eminem's concert features guest appearances from D-12 (one of the last times you will see Proof on stage with Eminem), Obie Trice & Stat Quo. I am a fan of Eminem, but this concert came across missing some of Eminem's hits like, "The Real Slim Shady," "Superman," "Shake That" & "Bitch Please II." But this dvd has footage of Eminem performing his classics like, "Stan," "The Way I Am," "Mockingbird" & "Lose Yourself." I think Em's skits thru out the video showing him putting a gun to his head & pulling the trigger is a bit too harsh for his younger fans who may mistake his message. Otherwise if you're an Eminem fan, than this may make a good stocking stuffer for the holidays...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Papa-D (Rap Network): "Peace everyone, Papa D here about 1000 pounds heavier than last week...lets just say I got my turkey on for real this year. mom dukes hooked it up....It was a relaxing weekend overall, and I have exams starting next week, so I needed the rest....my Patriots barely squeezed one out against Philly last nite, but i am glad they won and that it was at least an exciting game.....make sure to get at me for Guru interviews, and check www.papadpromo.com for the latest mp3 updates"...

Vernassa Fields (Live365.com - Spyn Cycal Radio): Just a heads up. I am preparing to start promoting shows in the Sacramento area... I will need access to artist AND booking agents.Yeah, I know. I've heard the horror stories... I'm not a sleaze bag. I promise. I am genuinely interested in bring great Hip-Hop music to the area. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme for me. It's a way to expose amazing talent, and expand the Spyn Cycal brand.

I get super hyped about the artists I play on Spyn Cycal Raydio, and I just want to share the sounds with as many folks as possible via live performances from Spyn Cycal Raydio artists. My objective is to spread the music and establish myself as a solid reliable promoter. Help me help you and your artists. With your cooporation, The Spyn Cycal brand will be known for good quality live Hip-Hop shows. I'm currently scheduling a show for Spring 2008... Please keep me informed of your artist's touring schedules as well as their availability. Spyn Cycal is expanding... Spyn Cycal wants to see more shows! So... I will bring them myself.

I'm sending a list of months your way. PLEASE get at me ASAP with artists that you would like to add to the series. You don't need to submit an exact date (yet), but if you can provide me with an idea of who you have available by adding the artist(s) name(s) by the desired month, I can start promoting the series with your artists included.

I would also like to use this calendar as a sponsorship tool as well. I would like to present a list of acts coming to the Sacramento area to potential sponsors.

Spyn Cycal Concert Series 2008:

FEB 2008: ? (tentative month)

APRIL 2008 - OFFICIAL KICK OFF OF THE 2008 CONCERT SERIES

DECEMBER 2008

***NOTE*** If you've got an artist coming from out of state that will be in the Cali area within any of the months above, get at me if you are interested in a gig in the SacTown area. Spyn Cycal will try to make it happen

Garbs Infinite (WRUW-Cleveland): "First off, I have to start by sayin that the Statik Selektah album is incredible!! One of the best album's i've heard in a long time. Seriously, I like everything on it. You need it in your collection! Thats all.... we now return to our regularly scheduled program"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Boo hoo, Saigon packed up his toys and went home. If you didn't hear, Saigon put out a lengthy rant on his myspace page blasting the media, hip hop fans, and his industry colleagues for driving him out of the business. He claims that he will never rap again, and will not release his major label debut "The Greatest Story Never Told" (ironic title). Although I took the time to read the blog posting, I couldn't help but wish it were still 2003, when I still gave a shit about Saigon. I guess he shouldn't have fired Turtle from "Entourage" as his manager. The silver lining here is that Just Blaze can come out of the witness protection program and start selling beats again to artists who we are actually checking for.

What is up with celebrity jail sentences? I heard that Lindsay Lohan served 84 minutes of her sentence, Mike Tyson got only 24 hours for reckless driving and drug possession, and that Michael Vick went to jail early in the hopes of turning 4 1/2 years into a single 12 month stretch. I think that celebrities should be given MORE jail time than normal offenders, because they deserve it for squandering fame and fortune that others would kill for. It's a travesty when Linday Lohan spends just over an hour in the clink while South Park Mexican and Mystikal rot away. Oh wait...

Enough with the "Brokeback" jokes. Everytime something gay is mentioned anywhere on the planet earth, some uncreative son-of-a-bitch feels the need to pipe in with a "Brokeback" reference. Today my boss was telling my crew about how he accidentally booked a gay friendly hotel on his last vacation, and one of my co-workers chimed in "Did they give you the 'Brokeback' suite"? Hardy-fucking-har-har genius. Let's get you an audition on Saturday Night Live. Newsflash budding comedians: when Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien have already used the joke in their monologues 3 years earlier, it's neither fresh, nor creative, nor funny. If you want to read something funny, I suggest
Saigon's myspace page"...

Raw-B (KUSF-San Francisco): "What up! Our studios were packed like a MUNI bus during rush hour this past Sunday on BeatSauce. The Elevation Tour was in town and Now On, Buff 1, DJ Haircut, 14KT and Manwell came through with a grip of music and freestyles for our listeners. Get more info at http://www.myspace.com/nowon
Next up we had Toney Parka from the Raw Dialect crew in for interview and freestyle. This cat is a cool muthaf^@!*. His new single has been in heavy rotation on our turntables. Don't sleep....get more info at http://www.toneyparka.com...

D-Tragic (805HipHop.com): "Hey FAM – Do you listen into the “World Famous Wake Up Show” w/ King Tech, Sway and DJ Revolution? If so check out Roc-C in the newest session. Tech and Sway have compared him to the likes of Biggie and Pac……Now you are gonna HAVE to listen in to this session done in July.

Listen to the new “Team Get Em” Album Sampler. It has a few new cuts from the album on it.
