What's Upper?  I am back in full effect for the '08! I hope you had great holiday. It kinda went by quick for me but it's good to be back. The last few weeks I got a lot of R&R but yo, Britney Spears was like all I heard about in the news, online & in the papers. My hometown Seahawks will not be in this years Super Bowl XLII. Other than that it's great to see "American Gladiators" back on TV with new hosts Hulk Hogan & Laila Ali. I was a big fan of the original 80's show & still a fan in the Y2K8. Crush & Siren are da ish. Oh yeah, "American Idol" new season premieres this week too! I also bonded with Damian "Mr Groove" Rodriguez (KGNU-Denver) who taught me how to work my new dvd burner & transfer movies to my IPOD. Plus I finally created my own YouTube page! Thanks to my dawgs D-Tragic (805HipHop.com) & Vernassa Fields (Spyn Cycal) for schooling me on compressing something to something ( I still have no clue but learning!!! LOL) so I can upload videos on YouTube! So now you can visually see a 20 plus year history of yours truly from my days with Nastymix Records, Sir Mix-A-Lot, my Lowrider days back in Seattle in 1983 and a few movies I've been in; "Kung Pow! Enter The Fist," "House Party 4" and "Scratch Merchants." So if you're ready to share some history with me, than log onto: http://youtube.com/nastynes818...

Rev Run's Journey From 'Raising Hell' To Raising a Family

"We're gonna go minister to the world on MTV."
Rev Run's Journey From 'Raising Hell' To Raising a Family
(By Jae C. Hong -- Associated Press)

You wouldn't expect a rap star who drives a Phantom and makes trips to Hooters with Kid Rock to be the centerpiece of one of the most feel-good and positive reality shows on television, but Joseph "Rev Run" Simmons is just that.

"Run's House," the reality show on MTV, chronicles the lives of Simmons, a founding member of the legendary rap group Run-DMC, and his wife and kids as they go about their lives of family-friendly domesticity.

As "Run's House" prepares for its season finale Thursday, Simmons chatted by phone about his faith, his show and his fellow rappers -- David Betancourt

How did "Run's House" get started on MTV?

I got a call from Diddy. Me and [brother Russell Simmons] had these little commercials playing on BET of us promoting sneakers and he just called me out of nowhere and said: "I got an idea. I don't know if you're with this, but you should do a reality show."

What was your family's reaction to the idea?

I told my family and they were down. I said we're gonna go minister to the world on MTV. When we work, we understand that it's unto God, so we're serving. Serving in the capacity of a reality show. Showing people family values and bringing entertainment into their homes. My ministry is family. It's a church that leads by example instead of preaching to you. Showing you the lifestyle that comes from serving God. Not so much the cars and the house, but the peace and health that's in my home.

You're a reverend. Your brother Russell will drop an expletive immediately after meditation. Has there always been that contrast between you two?

He's probably always been like that. I didn't notice because [in the past], I was cursing more than him. His cursing seems really street and everything [on the show], but it wasn't noticeable when I was Run. Now that I'm Rev Run, it's very noticeable on the show, which makes it cool.

Snoop Dogg now has a reality show that deals with him being a father/rapper/family man. What are your thoughts on his getting this type of show?

I love that Snoop is now working with his wife and kids, which creates closeness. So if I inspired that in any way, I have really scored a touchdown. When [Diddy] says to me: "I want to go bowling with you and your family, the Simmonses versus the Combses," I realize I've inspired. I'm inspiring people to go home sometimes. It's very appealing to see.

Do you feel that a show like "Run's House" is necessary for TV, given that the top-rated reality show among African Americans is the tawdrier "I Love New York 2"?

If everything was "Run's House," you wouldn't be happy. You're happy to watch "I Love New York," you're happy to watch Flav, you're happy to watch Russ. You're interested in "American Gangster," you're also interested in Talib Kweli. It's the buffet of life. If you don't want the cranberry sauce on the buffet, don't eat it.

How did you become a reverend?

I didn't like what was happening in my life. I started going to church. I kept going every day and the collar just kind of got wrapped around my neck.

What do you hope to accomplish for the duration of the show?

God has given me a pioneering spirit. It's a Tyler Perry type of thing. How do you get God into the movie theater and entertain people? It's a blessing. It's huge. In Times Square, me and all my family are covering every window of MTV and I have a collar on. That's the most unbelievable thing in the entire world...

7 GRAND RECORDS ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF GURU'S JAZZMATAZZ: THE TIMEBOMB/BACK TO THE FUTURE MIXTAPE FEATURING DAMIAN MARLEY, LORD TARIQ, ZION I, COMMON, DOO WOP, TONY TOUCH, ACEYALONE, NATURE, K-BORN, HIGH POWER, MR. LIF, AND MORE.

PRODUCED BY SUPERPRODUCER SOLAR HOSTED BY THE MIXTAPE LEGEND DJ DOO WOP.

Fresh off an international tour, Guru, super-producer, Solar, and 7 Grand Records announce the February 2008 release of Guru's Jazzmatazz: The Timebomb/Back To The Future Mixtape, the "raw" companion to the Jazzmatazz Vol. 4 album. The Mixtape carefully and superbly crafted by Super-producer Solar exhibits the "Golden Era" New York essence along with a cutting edge futuristic twist! Hence the title, "Back To The Future."

The tracks are pure "bangers" and the guest appearances are classic as they compliment Guru's iconic yet streetwise vocals! The MC's selected represent the best of America's true Hip Hop artists that hail from the "Underground" scene that Guru has remained so true to. There are features such as reggae artist Damian Marley, Aceyalone and Zion I from the West Coast, Blue Scholars from Seattle, Mr. Lif from Boston, Yungun from London, as well as legends Lord Tariq from the Bronx, Nature from Queensbridge, C. Knowledge from Digable Planets and Tony Touch to name a few. The album also features up-and-coming 7 Grand Records artists K. Born & Highpower from Philadelphia and Young Pablo from Paterson, New Jersey. This is no ordinary mixtape CD as it is hosted by the Mixtape King himself, DJ Doo Wop, who is featured on a couple of tracks.

"Since the inception of Jazzmatazz, one of our main focuses has been to create music for every generation, for the music lover. The Jazzmatazz series has always been about charting new territories, blurring genre lines, and collaborating with artists to create music that's timeless and relevant."

With a career that spans over a decade and one that is now eleven-LP's deep, Guru has been able to stay relevant when many of his counterparts have faded into the background. Now with a musical and business partnership in full motion with Solar, and the formation of their new label, 7 Grand, Guru feels even more reinvigorated. "7 Grand Records allows me not only to be creative, but to finally be in control of my creativity. Between us you've got a legendary spitter that's still hungry and still relevant, teamed up with the hottest New York producer in the game, which makes for a musical vision that is powerfully important and virtually unstoppable." Solar adds, "7 Grand Records is the epitome of what great NY Hip-Hop represents taken to the new millennium and beyond! Now in control of our own label, we're free to introduce forward-thinking Hip-Hop concepts to the masses," explains Solar.

In the past, Guru's Jazzmatazz endeavors have enabled him to collaborate with a who's who list of legendary musical icons including Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Chaka Khan, Isaac Hayes, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis and popular cross-over favorites including Macy Gray, The Roots, Erykah Badu and Angie Stone. When asked how he has been able stay such a viable force in the music industry Guru states matter of factly "be honest with yourself, be original, be open to criticism and don't be afraid to reinvent and recreate yourself."

With Guru's Jazzmatazz Volume 4: The Hip-Hop Messenger (Back To The Future) and it's companion mixtape Guru's Jazzmatazz: The Time Bomb (Back To The Future Mixtape), Guru and Solar have delivered another fresh approach, one that's not only an interesting attempt at boundary-crossing but also a compelling enough to bridge the jazz, Hip-Hop & soul enthusiast all at the same time...

Excerpts from Davey D's End of Year Hip Hop Awards
by Davey D

Top Five Low Moments in Hip Hop in 2007:
One of Hip Hop's lowest moments came in January of 2007 when the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) teamed up with the police to raid the offices of DJ Drama and DJ Cannon in Atlanta. It was a foul move when you consider that for years the industry especially on the Hip Hop side has depended upon mixtape deejays who usually at great expense to themselves have gone out and literally laid the foundation and blown up the careers of the artists they featured.

Mixtape deejays have long been a bigger asset then the marketing departments at many of these labels Drama and Cannon are the best of the best and too see and hear about their offices getting raided and them getting arrested was about one the lowest moments we had this year. In my opinion the motivation behind the raid was about exerting control, not loss of revenue.

Nowadays the RIAA wants to bring their gestapo tactics to the average consumer. They are now pushing a case through the court system to make it illegal for purchasers of a CD to copy music onto their computer. How low and how sad is that?

3)The death of soul legend and longtime James Brown sidekick Bobby Byrd. Folks within Hip Hop know Byrd best for the song 'I Know You Got Soul' which was immortalized by rap stars Eric B & Rakim.

Top Ten High Moments in Hip Hop for 2007

1)Master P stepping up, apologizing to Black woman and making a promise to turn things around and release positive music. He came across as an esteemed elder statesman and repped us well during the contentious Congressional Hearings last Summer.

2)Byron Hurt's award winning documentary Hip Hop Beyond Beats & Rhymes which addressed misogyny in Hip Hop and forced us all to take along hard look.

3)The Paid Dues and Rock the Bells Tour. These two concerts sold out in many cities and let us clearly know that Hip Hop was alive and well inspite of dire predictions from so called experts and critics. The highlight of these tours was seeing all the great acts that now have stellar back up bands...

4) KRS-One, Lord Cashus D and the Chicago Hip Hop community that came out in full force and lit things up at the FCC hearings around the issue of media consolidation in Chicago. There were attempts to stifle voices but folks in the The Chi weren't having it.. Hip Hop was in the building. You can peep KRS speaking at those hearings here:
http://odeo.com/audio/16884193/view

Big shout outs are in order to the Seattle Hip Hop community who followed suit and came out in force at the FCC hearings in Chicago. 206 Zulu Nation members came through and let the FCC Commissioners know that Hip Hop folks were alive and active and very much against the type of dribble being offered up daily on commercial stations.

10)The formation of the Hip Hop Chess Federation in the Bay Area and witnessing Rza and his fellow Wu-Tang family members Gza and Black Monk take the championship for the federation's first tournament. Big shout out to long time journalist Adisa Banjoko who put this together. he brought together a gang of chess playing Hip Hop artists ranging from Casual of Heiro to Paris to pioneers like Popmaster Fabel to DJ Q-Bert to Raaka from Dilated Peoples to Sunspot Jonz of Living Legends along with martial arts experts and chess masters to go head to head in the ultimate thinking game. Things went so well this past summer that HHC is gearing up for a own's chess tournament called the Queens Invitational. Banjoko noted that its important to get people to think long term and if they're gonna battle, battle on the 64 squares as you comtemplate your next move opposed to having meaningless battles in the streets over nonsense. Check out Rza winning the tournament.

DJ King Otto (KFAI-MN): "Happy New Years folks! I'm extremely happy to announce that I've finally replaced my dead laptop! 08 is off to a great start!"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Wow! 2008! Who would have thunk it? It's definitely crept up on me quickly. Its been a crazy start to 2008 here in NH as we just had our first in the nation primary. We endured weeks of intensifying fliers wedged in our door jambs, pollsters dialing our homes, and scabs on every street corner waving signs in the bitter cold. I think the thing that really strikes me as odd about the election process is how newspapers endorses a candidate. It seems to me that media outlets (i.e. Fox News, CNN) have become less bashful about denying how jaundiced their news reporting is. When a newspaper, that is supposed to deliver impartial news on a daily basis, decides who their reader's Presidential pick should be, it strikes me as a little unethical. Like Britney Spears trying to be a parent.

One of the funniest stories I read over the break was about C-Murder's book club. A literary organization is sponsoring a telephone chat about C-Murder's book "Death Around the Corner" and has crowned his novel as their "Book of the Year". I guess when C-Murder, a mongoloid who rode his brother's coattails to minimal fame, wins an award as author of the year, it's pretty much time to give up on civilization. Or at least stop feeling bad that you read Penthouse instead of books.

I heard one of my friends the other day using the term "shitload" to describe something. I tried to figure out where that term originated from, but what I found even more puzzling was exactly how much a "shitload" is. It's obviously a unit of measure, but I really don't know how to envision it. I think that I might try using it more often to see if I can quantify the term. For example, the following conversation might occur:
Deli Worker: "Can I help you, Sir?"
Me: "Yes, I'd like some Smoked Turkey Breast please."
Deli Worker: "OK, how much?"
Me "I'd like a shitload please."
It should be smooth sailing from there"...

Jim Tess (WUML-Lowell MA): "I am still looking for people to perform here in Lowell at a local bar called "The Worthen." The venue is excellent, you will have a good time. DJ Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "So before the New Year, I heard what I thought was the worst news ever. JESSICA ALBA REVEALED SHE WAS PREGNANT. But that was just the beginning since she announced that she was engaged a couple days later. Man 2007 ended real shitty.

As much as I hate to say this, I really don't see anyone beating
New England in the playoffs. That team is a monster for real. Something tells me that Papa D & DJ Addition will be celebrating on February 3"...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "Back at it again in 2008. Don't know what this year holds but I'm looking forward to it. I hope MJ'S album is good based on what I've seen it should sound good but you just never know nowadays. Anyhow look forward to talking to everyone during the course of the year"...

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, Canada): "Big shout out to the new homie Nasty Nes as CFRO and DJ Sage have officially been added to the reporting team of RapAttackLives.com. It is honor as this publication is a pioneer has far as college radio reporting goes. Moreover, Nasty Nes was one of the founding members of the legendary KEXP "Street Sounds" show, which I guest on from time to time. And, today Rap Attack and Nasty Nes both represent Hip-Hop music and culture to the fullest.

We are already bringing that heat in 2008. On January 1st show, we recapped our favourites of 07' in no particular order, but they were all slamming tracks. Then last night, we were joined by one of the best DJs/producers out there right now. Statik Selekath talked about his debut album "Spell My Name Right" and how it all came about. This young cat at only the age of 25, has got that talent, soulfulness and ear for coupling beats with the right MCs that has made DJ Premier a legend. And Statik has got even more heat for us in 08' with upcoming projects with Q-Tip, Reks, Termanology as well as a sophomore album. Both these shows and many others are available at: www.urpradio.podomatic.com...

EarthQuake (Live365.com): "Happy New Year. Hope everyone had a great Holidays. I had a chance thanks to Dave to check out 2 of the 5 sold out Blue Scholars shows before Christmas. Every group that performed each night killed it and it was a great environment. If you couldn’t go to any of the shows you could watch on the internet and also can still check out the archives. Welcome to all the new Rap Attack Reporters. I am honored to still be a part of the panel"...

Nesto (WODU-VA): "What's good everyone? Hope everyone had a good holiday season, and brought the new year in right and safe. Something about a new year and have that "clean slate"again, but it's already the 2nd week of 2008, and I'm already stressed the hell out with my damn day job... DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, as long as you all keep blessing me with that dope music I'm gonna be good"...

Bri-G (RPM/Mixtapes-New York): "Remember when these little emails got shot out on a weekly basis. I know you missed that, so here we go with back to back weeks.

To get this started right, I have a need to talk about "The Wire." Bubbles needs to die. I’m sorry to say this, but I’m sure most of you will agree with me about this fact. Bubbles was a nice little supporting character. He was the kind and friendly dope fiend always getting into zany antics as all dope fiends seem to do. He helped the police, put hats on drug dealers, and somehow managed to make it almost every day unscathed. Now, however, we’ve had to be subjected to Bubbles personal life, his relationship with his sister, random shots of him just walking down the street looking for dope. I’m tired of it. This dude needs to be killed fairly soon.

Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest.

100 bpm. That’s the line where music starts being fun. Missy, Timbaland, Dream, Janet, Snoop, Pitbull (even though he jacked the track from a dead chick), Pittsburg Slim, even Flo-Rida for god’s sake. Somebody better tell 75 bpm hood krunk music it’s a wrizzap. You had a nice run. Time to call it a day, people wanna dance again.

I was especially tired of the phenomenon of dudes standing in a ground and chanting the lyrics to some random fly by night southern rapper instead of dancing with the females. This is fine for gay clubs, this is not fine when you’re a straight man looking to hook up with a chick.

I made a conscious decision to buy a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses the other day. I think I’m slowly slipping back to what I wore when I was 10 years old. It started with the Members Only jacket over the summer and now its regular fitting jeans and t-shirts.

I’ve been getting hit with repeated emails about the voting for the Mixtape Awards. First off, I don’t think I’ve listened to a mixtape in 2 years so I’m not the one to ask. I don’t even own a cd player. I honestly didn’t think people were still even making them in physical CD form. I guess I’m a little out of touch.

On the same note, I REALLY can’t believe people still make “exclusive” tapes. Seriously. People really still just take some mp3 from their email inbox, slap a couple of crappily recorded drops in between the tracks and call it a mixtape. I’m blown away at the stupidity of the consumer. Completely blown away. I’m even more blown away that you can win an award for doing it"...
