BIZZY BONE, 50 CENT, CHINGY, MAINO, OTHERS COLLABORATE ON NOTORIOUS B.I.G. TRIBUTE
Just days before the 11th anniversary of the death of the Notorious B.I.G., rapper Bizzy Bone has joined a host of other rap superstars in recording a special tribute to the slain New York rapper.

The song, "Can I Speak to Biggie," also features 50 Cent, Chingy, Maino, Bobby Valentino, R&B singer Chris Notez, and New York rapper/ songwriter H.B. "Hav-Boy" Monte, who also executive produced the project.

Monte said "Can I Speak to Biggie" is the first tribute of its kind."This is the first tribute that has not been affiliated with Bad Boy Records and everyone that I reached out to was happy to do it," he says. "Nobody even wanted any money for doing this." Monte said the idea for the song, which promotes a positive message and features artists from every coast, was born out of a conversation he had with Ma$e and Jadakiss during which they discussed the idea of doing a song that would pay homage to Biggie. "I had the vision," he said. "The studio that I work out of is in Bed-Stuy where Biggie was raised, the block that he was on everyday and that conversation between Ma$e and Jadakiss just kept running through my mind so I called a bunch of people that I thought would be great for the record – people who had meaning whether it meant past, present or future."
Bizzy Bone said his participation in the recording was a "no brainer.""I didn't even have to think about it," he said. "How could I not want to pay tribute to such an amazing spirit and talent as Biggie. It is an honor to be a part of this."

Monte said he will continue to do Biggie tributes each year using different artists. He added that the song is being released to radio stations nationwide today and tomorrow and he hopes to tie the song into "Notorious," the upcoming Fox Searchlight biopic on Biggie. He said he also plans to release exclusive behind-the-scenes video footage from the recording sessions. HERE'S THE

Listen. In our younger years, we hafta have heart. We need to let them know you're on the front lines, but then there should come a time to win the war. The hip-hop revolution had to do with balance, so we don't want to get rid of corporations. In the early 90s, Nike gave $99,000 to Gil Scott Heron, but all that money went to the birth of the Temple of Hip Hop. These corporations are laying their money down. Fake-ass closet protesters weekend warriors or barroom philosophers talk a good game but the real question is who's going to finance the revolution?

Interview: Hip-Hop Legend KRS-ONE Seizes
New Ways for Rap to Work with Major Brands

The godfather of hip-hop isn't about to retire yet. KRS-
ONE is still preaching from his pulpit about hip-hop's relevancy today and, in an interview with DigitalJournal.com, he explains how the business models of hip-hop now are changing for the better.

Digital Journal - Don't call KRS-
ONE a sellout. Sure, he might be joining forces with Smirnoff for the vodka company's hiphop mix series. Sure, Nike commissioned the rap legend to collaborate on the track "Better Than I've Ever Been" to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Air Force One sneakers. But KRS-ONE doesn't take kindly to over-arching statements about corporations infiltrating hip-hop for their own greedy ambitions. In fact, in an interview with DigitalJournal.com prior to his stop in Toronto for a keynote address at Canadian Music Week, the MC discussed the new business models of hip-hop which include accepting deals with major brands.

If there's anyone who has seen hip-hop grow, mature and eat itself, it's KRS-ONE. Born Kris Parker and raised in Brooklyn, he began his career as founder of Boogie Down Productions in the mid-1980s, winning attention for his politically conscious lyricism that earned him the nickname "the Teacher." His Edutainment album with BDP espoused diplomacy over gun violence, but it was his first solo album Return of the Boom Bap that secured him a place in hip-hop's Hall of Street Game. The lyrics were thoughtful ("No politician can give you peace/ If you trust Jesus, why do you vote for a beast?") and the songs' beats were heavy and inventive. Tracks like "I Can't Wake Up" and "Outta Here" set a benchmark for other artists to emulate.

In an interview with DigitalJournal.com, KRS-ONE says hip-hop artists should work with companies but still create music on their own terms.

When hip-hop went gangsta and then subsequently bling-heavy, KRS-ONE hung in there. Along the way, he founded the Stop the Violence Movement to promote crime-free living in New York, while also creating the Temple of Hip Hop, which offers information on hip-hop history and the various elements that make up this powerful music form. KRS acts as the school's principal, giving interested hip-hop heads some of his knowledge about how people can live a hip-hop lifestyle and not just listen to it. As the website states: "KRS ONE has consistently taught the Hip Hop community to think of itself beyond entertainment and more as a specific culture of new people in the world."

Like any preacher who doesn't want to get off the pulpit just yet, the 42-year-old MC is hungry to deliver his philosophies, whether on hip-hop or American culture. Musically, KRS recently released two new albums, including one with another hip-hop forefather, Marley Marl. Politically, KRS is active in battling poverty-stricken areas, meeting with New Jersey mayors to discuss high crime rates. He also spoke at an October FCC hearing about radio media concentration and how independent artists get squeezed out of rotations. It's obvious KRS isn't even thinking about retiring.

He's crossing borders this weekend to bring his insight to a rapt audience: at Canadian Music Week in
Toronto, he'll discuss how hip-hop is progressing to foster new ways to bring music to the masses. As he told DigitalJournal.com in an interview (often talking in the third-person), working with companies might be jarring to skeptics but it's the smartest way to get good music out to hip-hop fans.

DigitalJournal.com: So how do you think the hip-hop business model is changing?

KRS-
ONE: Today, artists like myself or Chuck D or Talib Kweli hold a degree of credibility that's attracting companies like Red Bull, Cadillac, or Nike. Executives at these companies are our fans. And they are really sick of the state of music. So what they've done is spend $250,000 of their own money, in the case of Nike, to create a song with Kanye West, Nas, Rakim, and KRS ONE. We don't rap about the shoes because they don't want us talking about that. They just want us to create a song they can play on their website. Authenticity is the new business model and these companies need a product that's not destroyed by an artist's shady image.

DigitalJournal.com: But won't some old-school hip-hop fans say you're selling out?

KRS-
ONE: When you get KRS ONE, I'm not changing my message for nobody. If you do business with KRS, you're getting anti-war statements, you're getting stuff about the Temple of Hip Hop. A sellout is someone who buys you and changes your message, but we're not doing that.

"Authenticity is the new business model," hip-hop MC KRS-ONE told DigitalJournal.com, "and these companies need a product that's not destroyed by an artist's shady image."
DigitalJournal.com: You're saying you can't be a sellout if you stick to your guns?

KRS-
ONE: Exactly.

KRS-
ONE will be delivering a keynote address at Canadian Music Week on March 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. On the evening of March 8, KRS will perform at midnight at Toronto's Opera House Concert Theatre...

Taken from AKROBATIK's latest MySpace Blog I thought you would find this interesting and very real:

"My album has been out for a week now, and as it looks there is good news and bad news. The good news is that I am among the top independent artists in the nation in terms of album sales for the week. The bad news is that my sales, along with everyone else's, are pitiful.

I can only speak for myself here by saying simply that when there are no more good artists left putting albums out in hip-hop the fans have no one to blame but themselves. For every person that comes up to me or writes me to tell me that they think I did a great job on this record, I wonder how many of them actually bought it? Certainly not a high percentage. Most artists have it even worse.

It's too bad, really. To hear almost unanimously across the board that my album is "bangin", "solid", "classic", "amazing", and all the superlatives I hear thrown around, I would think that the people who most want to see me succeed would actually support the cause.

Think of buying a CD as casting a vote. Just to SAY you support a candidate does not do much for their cause; you have to actually cast the vote.

Simply put, if you want another Akrobatik album, BUY THIS ONE.

If you don't, it's all good. I have other ways to make money. It's just a shame that the very technology that makes it so much easier to support your favorite artists (you don't even have to leave your fucking couch to buy an album) is the same technology that is allowing hip-hop 'fans' to kill the very music that they claim to love by stealing the product of hard-working, talented artists. I for one will not put my blood, sweat, and tears into another expensive-ass project that brings me to the edge of sanity just to have it stolen and passed around as if I got a 3 million dollar advance or some shit.

Don't be surprised when there is nothing left but bullshit commercial music to choose from. And when that happens, the same people who stole an Akrobatik album, or a Little Brother album, etc, will be the ones complaining that "hip-hop" is dead. YOU ARE THE ONES KILLING IT!

Check out my Lipton Iced Green Tea commercial on the radio when you get a chance. Then ask yourself why I did it. Then pop in your CD-R with my name and album title written in Sharpie that your man gave you and bump that shit. You're missing out on some great artwork, but hey.. fuck it.. I have other things to do besides go on a one-man 'save hip-hop' crusade.

But I would love to hear back from you, the fans. Do you think you shouldn't have to pay for music? I KNOW for a fact that thousands upon thousands of people have "Absolute Value", and only a small percentage of those people bought it.

Good luck to every other artist dealing with this current Fiasco (no pun intended)"...

Brooklyn based Duck Down Records have officially added rap icon KRS-One to its roster. Label frontman, Buckshot, released a statement shortly after the signing, "It's a dream to be able to work with KRS-One. Before I even began rapping, that is who I checked for. I kept the Blueprint album on me at all times. That is all I listened to for an entire summer". In addition DJ Revolution has also been added to their roster with, DJ Revolution is the "King Of The Decks."
DJ Revolution has spent 15 years perfecting his craft on the 1200s. Revolution has done just about everything you can think

Aside, from being the DJ, producer and editor for the world famous "Wake Up Show," based out of LA on Power 106 and Syndicated across the nation, DJ Revolution is a renowned producer with credits on albums by: KRS-ONE, Defari, Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia, Buckshot, Smif N Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, Crooked I, Slum Village, El Da Sensei and Akrobatik to name just a few. DJ Revolution is also a veteran stage show DJ who has toured with artists such as Rakim and Kanye West.

Now DJ Revolution is readying his new project "KING OF THE DECKS" to be released on Duck Down Records in 2008. The album currently features appearances from:
*KRS
ONE
*Sean Price
*Crooked I
*Bishop Lamont
*Dilated Peoples
*Alchemist
*Royce 5'9"
*Guilty Simpson
*Q-Bert
*Blaq Poet
*Spinbad
*Defari
*Kidz In The Hall
*Buckshot
*Bumpy Knuckles
*Planet Asia

DJ Revolution'sattention to detail and his genuine respect for the craft of Hip-Hop music is what separates him from other DJ's, as quoted by saying: "despite today's DJ's being 'psuedo-lebrities' and as big and trendy as ever, they are almost completely disconnected from Hip-Hop in the eyes of the general public. Through this record I'll attempt to reconnect the DJ with Hip-Hop, re-introduce the DJ to those who forgot what we really do and re-define what is possible in recorded music for the DJ as an artist"...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Bri-G (
RPM Promo/Mixtapes-NY): "It would’ve been nice of the good folks writing Lost to have at least let me know who Ben’s man is on the ship was before the end of last night’s episode. I’m done asking for big answers in a timely manner, but when you have a segment where a question is just seconds from being answered; I need you to follow through during that same episode. I’m literally just hanging on at this point because I’ve invested too much to just stop watching it.

Speaking of not watching something, the New York Knicks are so bad, so utterly terrible, that Knick fans found themselves giving Lebron James a standing ovation the other night. How far have things fallen, that in New York City, the mecca of basketball, Knick fans would give a standing ovation to an opponent because their own team has sucked them of any will to cheer? Thank god baseball starts again in a month.

College basketball conference championships start this weekend. My alma mater, Jacksonville University, looks to make their first trip to the big dance since Artis Gilmore was on the team in the 70’s. Can the Dolphins pull it off? Catch it at www.asun.playonsports.tv/ for the small price of $6.00. You won’t be disappointed. Atlantic Sun Conference Basketball...Catch the Fever!!!!

I am personally primed and ready for championship week with my newly purchased Heineken mini keg. For those of you unaware of this incredible creation, the Heineken mini keg is 5 liters of juicy keg beer that fits snugly in your refrigerator. Anytime I want a beer, I simply attach the pump, and in seconds I have a fresh Heineken straight from the keg. I don’t think I can put my love for this little invention into words. If the keg makes it through the weekend I will have it ready for Sunday night when…

The Wire comes to an end. I literally have no idea how they plan to wrap all this up in one last episode. Is Michael gonna take over the streets now that everybody’s either dead or in jail? Is McNulty gonna go down for creating a fake serial killer? Is it all over for Clay Davis? What happened to the Greeks when the cops raided the drug stash? Will the ghost of Omar fall in love with the ghost of the kid who played Telly in “Kids” and used to roll with Bubs? So many questions, just one episode"...

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver): "Last night we were joined by a lyrical legend in this rap game, AZ aka most of your favorite rapper's favorite MC just ask Termanology. Ever since first appearing as the only guest on Nas's "Illmatic"; AZ has shown skill, consistency, and love for this game. In our interview with AZ he discusses his upcoming release "Undeniable" (dropping April 1), but also issues of being underrated and yet respected amongst his peers. But, go ahead our peep the interview and mini-throwback of some of our AZ favourites. www.urpradio.podomatic.com...

DJ Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "It's kind of weird that it's been 11 years since Biggie was murdered. Seems like just yesterday I was doubling up on "Unbelievable" in the mix.

Mystikal got denied parole for his role in videotaping a female being forced to perform sexual acts on him. So he should be out in 2 years. Great. Just great.

Sometimes I really have question the education level of some "Hip Hop Journalists". I got a news bulletin from AllHipHop.com that said "Rapper's show support for Juvenile". Now I'm not in anyway going to be negative towards Juvenile himself since having a child murdered is not something to make a joke about. What I am talking about is AllHipHop's headline. They made the claim that more than rapper was being supportive. Now that may be true. But why would they only quote / list one rapper? If you are going to make a claim, at least back it up. I know it sounds like I'm being too analytical but so what? That's what I do.

Game is doing a 2 month bid in LA County for driving in a school zone with a gun. Good. Why is this former stripper turned studio gangsta doing with a gun anyway? Let alone being around a school with it"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Every March I get all excited when baseball's spring training games start. It doesn't last long though, as I soon remember that the watching spring training is kind of like watching softcore - it looks like the real thing but isn't very satisfying. I watched the Twins pound my Red Sox on Sunday and by the 6th inning the field was littered with strangers none of whom had a jersey number under 70. Spring training games are like Erick Sermon beats - you want to like them but you can't get over the fact that they all suck.

The real sports shocker this week though was the retirement of Brett Favre. I thought that being 3 points from the Super Bowl with a very young team around him would assuredly bring Brett back to the gridiron. It's sad to see him hang it up and I'm grateful that I got to see him play live once in Atlanta. It's funny because at the time I was more excited to see Michael Vick. I'll bet the Falcons wish they had hung on to Brett instead...

I have to say that I keep finding myself more impressed with the Blue Scholars. If you are not checking for this Seattle duo, then you are missing out. I just saw the video for their last single "Joe Metro", and it was nothing short of phenomenal. In this era of materialism and triviality in music, it's refreshing to see such a genuine group. I also like the fact that they use sparing "blue" language. It makes my job easier. Now if only other artists would follow their lead.
The music industry continues to implode with TVT shutting its doors. It's hard to figure out why. With quality, introspective, and articulate artists like Lil Jon, The Ying Yang Twins and Pitbull, it's tough to understand how they aren't selling any records. They should have put out albums from their proven cash cows, like Mic Geronimo, Royal Flush and Cash Money Click. Oh wait"...
