Remembering a Hip Hop Icon: Eazy-E
The Hip-Hop community has experienced many losses over
the years, loosing such icons of the culture as Tupac
Shakur (2Pac), Notorious BIG, Jam
Master Jay and a host of others.
The tragic loss of Eric ‘Eazy-E’ Wright,
before his time; is often over shadowed, possibly by the
passing of Tupac (2Pac), another well loved HipHop icon
from the west coast. It seems Eric does not get the full
credit and admiration he deserves nor is he remembered
for his accomplishments in the music and entertainment
fields.
From the streets of
Compton
to NWA to Ruthless Records,, Eric ‘Eazy–E’
Wright made his mark. And it is sad that he is not
remembered in the way that some other artist we have
lost are remembered.
Ruthless Records brought us many gangsta rap tracks.
Eazy paved the way for the gangsta rap movement. He had
Dr. Dre, he discovered and brought us the Bone
Thugs. He added so much to the ‘rap’ game with his
street savvy and business skillz.
March 26, 1995 at the aged of 31, Eric ‘Eazy-E’ Wright
passed from this world, , ten days after being admitted
into LA's Cedars-Sinai hospital on 24 February. He went
for a lung problem. When he was diagnosed as having
full-blown AIDS, Wright made no bones about it. He was
the first rapper ever to admit such status. Eric
‘Eazy-E’ Wright passed away of AIDS
Eric Lynn Wright (September 7, 1963–March 26, 1995),
better known by the stage name Eazy-E, was an American
Hip Hop Icon, a rapper, producer, and record executive
from Anoush Street in Compton.
He was a Kelly Park Compton Crip (although he was
connected to many other Crip gangs) from the early
teenage years, and until his death. He is widely
regarded as the founder of the gangsta rap sub-genre and
initially rose to fame as a member of the group N.W.A,
but later achieved critical and commercial success as a
solo artist. Eazy-E's vocal style was marked by his
youthful, high-pitched voice and his lyrics focusing on
the elements of urban street life such as guns, drugs,
relations between residents and the police, and deviant
sexual activity. He had also for some time hosted a
Hip-Hop radio show on Los Angeles-based radio station
KKBT.
Eric ‘Eazy-E’ Wright is buried at Rose Hills Memorial
Park in Whittier, California.
Just never forget; always remember and appreciate where
the roots of rap and Hip-Hop came from. Rest in Peace
– Eric ‘Eazy E’ Wright...
While
Blue Scholars is locking ish down by puttin' my
hometown of Seattle back on the Hip-Hop map, get ready
for artist Orbitron to do the same. "B-Boy
Universal" (Beacon Skillz) is an album not to be
slept on. Orbitron spits the real Hip-Hop flavor & sound
that's been missing from the "206" for quite a long
time. His DJ Tecumseh is quick on the fader &
adds a great touch with his scratching skills over
Orbitrons tracks. Orbitron's debut single "Freedom Song"
features Geological from the Blue Scholars.

Legendary filmmaker Gus Van Sant has enlisted the
services of Portland's own Cool Nutz to supply
music for his latest film and Original Soundtrack to
"Paranoid Park". "Paranoid Park" was the winner of 2007
Cannes Film Festival's
Special 60th Anniversary Award and Independent Spirit
Awards Producers Award, and was released in theaters on
March 7th, 2008. Cool Nutz was very excited when he
received the call from Producer David Allan Cress to
request music for the award winning film and Original
Soundtrack. The use of music from Cool Nutz for this
film and Original Soundtrack proves the importance of
Cool Nutz's contributions to the Northwest entertainment
scene...

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, Canada): "In the
words of O-Dog, last night radio show was "BIG!"
and you need to go cop it –
www.urpradio.podomatic.com. We started
things off by highlighting and previewing the catalogue
of Guilty Simpson. With "Ode To The Ghetto"
dropping next week and me holding it down on Friday for
the release party at Shine Nightclub. You know we had to
get the man from the D to join us to talk about things
including the upcoming Stone Throws release, the
Detroit music scene, and first meeting linking up with
Dilla (RIP).
We also had Charon Don join us from Pittsburgh
talking about "The Art of Life" Mix CD &
DVD.
Charon Don track "Just Wanna Know" has been a URP
Radio favourite for months now; in fact, it made are
best of 2007 show. So, make sure you check it out.
Don't forget to hit the website www.stylusspinfest.com

Best Underground Hip Hop DJ
Best College Radio (DJ Sage and "The Urban
Renewal Project") Best DJ in Vancouver (If you

Brian
"ColdRigourous"
Leahy (WHUS-CT): "Post SXSW...Oh
My, did I ever get too drunk at the Urban meet n'greet.
Sorry if I puked on your shoes. Just kidding, there was
no puke, but there was def. me finding a nice dry
riverbed to lay down in for an hour or so afterwards"...
Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Funny follow up
from last week: I was just reading that the "Strapped"
Condom company has issued a cease & desist order against
media outlets displaying their ad that I attached to my
chart last week depicting Lil Wayne bent over the
hood of a car. So I'd delete that email from me
immmediately or face potential legal action! Seriously
though, the irony is that they probably brought more
publicity to their brand with that ridiculous ad. The
cease & desist order may indeed be just another
escalation of such a stunt. If they want to sue me
however, they are welcome to do so. I can't imagine
having "Strapped Condoms Vs. Edgie Kokoski" in the legal
books for eternity doing any damage to my
reputation...in fact, I might go up in some people's
estimation.
One person who should have learned the lesson that
Strapped Condoms just did about public presentation is
Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond. This
week he was accused of being involved in the 1994
Tupac/Quad Recording Studio shooting, at the
direction of none other than Sean "Diddy"
Combs. Although it will take a lot to
authenticate this story, the moral here is that when
your nickname is "Henchmen", it doesn't really bode well
for defending yourself against criminal accusations.
Just ask C-Murder. Plus, being associated with
Diddy is like being associated with Barack Obama's
pastor. Excuse me, "former" pastor. Seriously
though, how ludicrous are these charges? What's next,
they will accuse Diddy of spitting ghost-written lyrics
or pinning shootings on Bad Boy employees? Sheesh...
Speaking of shootings, let's hope and pray that the
Supreme Court does the right thing and protects our 2nd
Amendment rights to go shooting whenever we want. Today
in D.C. they debated the legality of civilians owning
firearms in the U.S. The irony is that D.C., which bans
handgun ownership, is one of the most violent cities in
America partly due to the fact that law-abiding citizens
can't defend themselves or fight back. Seriously though,
what criminal will think twice about sticking up someone
innocent who may have a knife or pepper-spray at the
worst? I won't even get started on how useful guns are
for hunting gorillas or keeping pesky zombies away. So
do the right thing Supreme court, and keep my dream of
mounting a Civil War cannon on my front porch alive"...
