What's
Upper? Good bye to the Summer of 2008 & hello to Fall
2008!...
Singer Nate Dogg has reportedly suffered another
stroke. While details remain brief, the performer also
known as Nathaniel Hale is in serious condition
and can't breathe on his own. This comes after a
previous stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side
of his body. A family member of singer Nate Dogg told
the media that his recent stroke was a result of his
poor lifestyle-"He has suffered another stroke from his
bad eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle." Nate Dogg's
manager says his artist is on the road to recovery." Our
prayers go out to Nate Dogg and his family...
Hip-Hop friendly drummer Travis Barker and famed
record spinner DJ AM (see photo above) escaped
near death when a private jet they were aboard caught on
fire, killing the two pilots, Barker's assistant and
bodyguard. According to reports two men, Barker and DJ
AM, escaped and were seen "patting the flames" off of
each other. They were later transported to a local
hospital and are being treated for "extensive burns."
Travis Barker and DJ AM are expected to make full
recoveries following the tragic plane crash that claimed
the lives of four individuals aboard a private jet, late
Friday night. Dr. Fred Mullins, the medical
doctor overseeing the two survivors, said "I think these
patients are going to make a full recovery. Anybody who
can survive a plane crash is very lucky." The families
of Barker and AM released a statement: "As the two
recuperate and mourn this loss, privacy for them, their
families and friends is requested at this time"...
Iconic rap group Run
DMC
has
been nominated for the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame and will
join the ranks of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious
Five, the only Hip-Hop group currently honored in
that hall of fame. The rap trio, who ushered in Hip-Hop
music in the early 80's, will be inducted into the
prominent academy in 2009...

Revolutionary Hip-Hop Icon Paris Gives Back, New Album
In-Stores 10/28
Forget spinners and diamonds, Bay Area rapper/activist
Paris is putting his own spin on the "golden
ticket" contest: a college education. Three randomly
placed tickets will be slipped into copies of Paris'
October 28th album, Acid Reflex, on his own
Guerrilla Funk Recordings and Filmworks, LLC,
distributed by Fontana/Universal. With three
guaranteed winners, each prize is a ten-thousand dollar
award redeemable as a scholarship towards any kind of
post-high school education or towards housing expenses.
"We're living in the hardest economic times in recent
memory, and this is a perfect way for me to try to ease
the pain for my supporters," says Paris. "I realize that
money is tight for many people and that music is
becoming less and less of a priority when everything is
rising but wages. This is not only a perfect way for me
to express my gratitude to those who continue to support
me, but to emphasize both the importance of higher
education and the need to continue to support art of
substance."
To
win, you must purchase an Acid Reflex CD at a
physical retail location or online (contest does not
apply to vinyl). Upon opening the CD, winners will
receive notification stating "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU'VE
WON
$10,000 FOR EITHER SCHOOL EXPENSES OR HOUSING!" Only
winning CD packages will contain notification and
details for the claiming of prizes. Non-winning CD
packages will not contain notification of any kind. For
more details about this promotion, log onto:
www.guerrillafunk.com after October 1st.
Acid
Reflex
comes just in time for election year and contains
commentary on a wide range of topics including
black-on-black crime and violence, the ongoing problem
of police brutality, war, politics and what Paris calls
"the need for more of an equal balance between positive
and negative influences in entertainment." Acid
Reflex is the latest installment of cutting-edge
funk-and-rock-inspired Hip-Hop in a career spanning the
sale of over 3.8 million units independently worldwide.
It features performances by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Inductee and Parliament/Funkadelic frontman
George "Dr. Funkenstein"
Clinton
and
Public Enemy leader Chuck D. For more

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver
BC, Canada): "Last we hit you off with a double shot
from DJ Revolution's new album, "King Of
The Decks" out now on Duck Down Records. Dru
Ha what up! So much quality music coming out
courtesy of Duck Down and the Boot Camp Clik
these days, and this release is no exception. Don't
sleep on this joint, which has appearances by
heavyweights such as KRS-One, Sean Price,
Special Teams, Blaq Poet, Bumpy
Knuckles, Planet Asia, Defari,
Evidence, Tash, Bishop Lamont,
Guilty Simpson, Royce Da 5'9 and more!
We were also joined live via telephone by the man
himself, DJ Revolution. We chatted it up about the new
album, his influences and his favourite cuts of all
time!
www.myspace.com/djrevolution
Not only that, the up-and-coming duo out of Seattle,
Steelo, touched base with us to tell us about their
current and upcoming projects! This duo is repping the
206 in a big way receiving airplay throughout North
America including Power 106. You know we couldn't
front!

In other news, we reviewed the 6 album on MTV's
top 10 Hip Hop albums of all-time, Jay-Z's
1996 debut, "Reasonable Doubt". It received thumbs
up from the entire URP crew except for O-Dog
(surprise surprise). Ah well, to each their own!
One last thing: Is anyone else feeling the Canadian
flavour we throw
down? If so it just so happens that
East
Vancouver's

Brian
"ColdRigourous"
Leahy (WHUS-CT): "Whuddup yall! Just about
to fall asleep--8AM class is killing me. But there's no
internet at home (so I can get my work done, fer chryse
sakes), so it's time to get this ish done now. PS, hope
nobody's got big money in investment banks right now, if
you do, God bless your soul! But then, if you
did, you prolly wouldn't be working in indie rap, now,
would you?"...
Chill
Will
(WCBN-MI):
"What's up peoples? Back from another long week of Djing
and football. Best time of the year. But back to
business it's DJ Chill Will of the University of
Michigan's WCBN 88.3fm. Home of "THE PROP
SHOP"

Mid-West and maybe the country. Be sure to tune into the

Nate
Abney
(WKDU-Philly):
"It is almost fall and that means the Mets are
going in the tank and the Phillies are in first
place. The Cowboys got a gimme on Monday night
but it is only week 2 talk to me in January. Going to a
couple weddings here so I look forward to not catching
the well you know let me just stop there. The Lil
Wayne and Babyface song is pretty good.
Almost a guilty pleasure for me to say that but not
quite. Say a prayer for the city of Philadelphia because
cats are starting to act up again. There was a shooting
at a youth basketball game AWARDS CEREMONY. I mean do we
have any respect for anything anymore. On a more
positive hope to see some people at CMJ
this year. I'll probably make it only one day so keep me
posted on events. Till the next Florida St. student is
caught cheating peace"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
"Wow, did anyone watch the Monday Night football game?
That was a good game. I think the NFC East has
the two strongest teams right now. Go Cowboys.
On the music tip, I'm feeling the DJ KO album.
Some dope beats on the album, and got a nice line up of
guest MCs. Check it out. Another album worth checking
out is the new People Under The Stairs album.
Good stuff, check them out.
On the economy tip. The financial markets are crumbling.
Bank of America buys out Merril Lynch,
WHAT!.. Stock markets take a HUGE hit because of all of
the troubles in housing, insurance, etc. And let's not
forget the insane increase in gas prices. Now I can
understand that the hurricane tore some shit up in
Texas,
but I'm from the east coast (Virginia
to be exact), and growing up I've had my fair share of
hurricanes roll through. Granted they weren't as bad as
the one that just hit
Texas,
but we had plenty come through. My point I'm trying to
make is hurricanes never had this type of effect on gas
prices when I was coming up. How the hell is gas jumping
up anywhere from 30 cents to over a dollar or more
because of a hurricane rolls through. If you ask me it's
just another excuse from Big Oil companies to rip the
consumer off and nothing can be done about it. And this
whole let's drill for oil in Alaska, is that really
going to work?? We have the technology to make
alternative energy means work. Why the hell is the
United States letting this resource hold us by the nuts.
I guess that whole oil crisis in the 70's didn't tell
the U.S. anything. The more things change, the more they
stay the same!"...
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH):
"As I did my chart this week I remembered another reason
why I love Fall so much - everyone is trying to get
their record out. September, October, and November are
definitely the best months for music lovers as albums
pile into stores to try and create a buzz before
Christmas. This month alone is chock full of quality hip
hop releases. September's release schedule includes
People Under The Stairs, Madlib,
Termanology, DJ Revolution, DJ K.O.
and LL Cool J. Sorry, I got carried away there
for a minute. Let's hope "Exit 13" is really his exit...
So I had the wonderful experience today of going to the
DMV to have my driver's license renewed. My state has
decided that they will be clever and issue everyone a
temporary license before they mail you the real renewed
one. That would be great if the temporary license wasn't
a black and white piece of paper that looks like some 15
year old kid made it on a 1980's vintage Xerox machine.
I can't wait to try and get into bars this weekend.
But I probably won't need ID to get into the bar this
weekend, as I will be invading lawless
Manhattan
for a wild weekend topped off my a trip to pilgrimage to
Mecca,
aka Giants Stadium on my birthday. That's right, even
the $180 a ticket can't keep a good Giants fan down. As
my team faces the lowly Bengals, I will be there in the
flesh to take in the sights, sounds, stinks, and scabs
of
Northern Jersey.
My NYC mecca used to be Fat Beats, but it's tough to get
excited about Fat Beats anymore since new vinyl
has become virtually extinct. That's why I am giving up
being a DJ to take up a new hobby: photographing
Kanye West at the airport. It probably pays better
too"...
