What's Upper?  We've got major fires burning out of control here in Southern Cali. I'm fortunate that I don't live next to the fires but my prayers are with those who are affected by the fires...

This years VH-1 "Hip-Hop Honors" was coo. Seeing Too Short get his props was hella hype for me because I can remember back in maybe 1987 when I was DJ'ing for Sir Mix-A-Lot, one of our first big gigs out of Seattle was in Oakland openning up for this guy named Too Short. I had no clue who this guy was or how scary Oakland females can be. It takes a lot to get me skurred but yo, the females at this show looked harder than NWA or the Geto Boys! And every track I remember Too Short rappin' ended with, "Biyaatch!!!" I was like there's no way people are gonna buy his music. LOL I was sooooo wrong & I ended up playing all his cuts on my radio show in Seattle cause Too Short created such a strong street buzz, I couldn't ignore it. Too Short & I became good friends since & he mos def deserved the props he got on "The Hip-Hop Honors"...

SITE DEDICATED TO 90'S HIP-HOP by: Jason Gloss

www.philaflava.com

We've been getting tons of positive reveiws thus far but we'd like to have your feedback. Please check it out and tell us what you think. If you like, be sure to bookmark or subscribe and of course spread the good word.

Welcome to the official blog of Philaflava.com's T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You) forum. "T.R.O.Y." is of course a reference to Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's ode to their fallen friend (Trouble T-Roy of Heavy D. and The Boyz). If the previous sentence reads like a foreign language to you, don't fret. The purpose of this blog is to explore and celebrate rap music (especially the overlooked and obscure recordings and artists) from about 1987 to 1997, give or take a few years on either end. We are not purists or elitists, just a bunch of proud rap nerds who revel in sharing our discoveries with anyone willing to listen.

Over at the T.R.O.Y. forum we spend most of our work week discussing artists like Scientifik, Godfather Don, K.M.D, Brand Nubian, Mobb Deep, Souls Of Mischief, Avatar the Articulate, Juggaknots and the like. This daily effort results in the uploading of songs and albums previously unavailable in formats other than dusty vinyl, some of which are long out of print. We frequently take the time to compile songs that share similar themes or moods. Just as the rap culture of the '90s (think Stretch and Bobbito, Sway & Tech and countless college and mixtape DJs) demanded that a class of obsessed aficionados isolate and organize the rawest tracks floating below the radar for our listening pleasure, the Internet age demands similar vigilance.

Stay tuned - in addition to providing you with a steady stream of links straight outta T.R.O.Y. we will also be posting mixes and analyses exclusive to this blog, as well as keeping an eye out for the best of what the throwback rap blogosphere has to offer. Consider this your one stop shop for "The Rap Of Yore" - just don't ever call it that...

RACISM FACING 2008 ELECTION? by: DJ Chela

Shouts to my colleagues at the Hip Hop Caucus who registered 30,000 new voters on Tuesday alone with their "Respect My Vote!" campaign. If you
haven't registered, deadlines are almost here in many states, you can register online there now: www.hiphopcaucus.org.

I'm dropping a video blog reacting to what I have seen throughout this election. With all the important issues at hand, many in the white community and media have been dwelling on racially biased beliefs and fears. The vlog is inspired by watching monolithic media coverage, seeing the effect of the "Bubba Vote" in polls, and speaking with my family members who describe what's going on in their communities in Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas. The process was soul searching, creative and fun, as I tried to figure out exactly how to address these complex issues. The result I hope is effective... I'd love all feedback.

Through the vlog I'm excited to represent another side of my personality and background--Lauren from NC, that some of ya'll might not know about--a white girl from the South that drinks lemonade out of mason jars, makes pickled okra and knows the lyrics to Shania Twain songs. Might just be something I keep building on, as I figure out how to reach white folks in the United States that I might not see eye to eye with and engage them on love, compassion and healing.

WE'VE GOT SOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST DJ's! THE RAP ATTACK DJ'S! GET TO KNOW OUR DJ's BY LOGGING ONTO:
www.MySpace.com/RapAttackLives
AND PEEP OUR UPDATED PHOTO PAGE...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, BC): "We had a huge show the other night featuring the new Devin The Dude album, "Landing Gear", along with talking about the release and the usage of the auto tune in the game. Later on we were joined by Big Shug, who talked about his upcoming album "The Other Side Of The Game" dropping on Novemeber 4th. It is always a treat to talk to the Gang Starr foundation"...

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "What's going on people? It's DJ Chill Will of the University of Michigan's WCBN 88.3 fm. Home of the longest running college radio Hip Hop show in the Mid-West and maybe the country. Be sure to tune into the show weekly on 88.3 fm in the Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit area. Or at www.wcbn.org Saturday nights from 9pm to 12 midnight est.

It was a good week clubs were packed and seen some people I hadn't seen in a long time("What up Doe"). Big shout to Choclair for calling in to the radio show and holding it down with me. His new single The Essence is hot check it out if you haven't. Also shout to T-Baby the youtube sensation and her single"It's cold in the D" LOL when you see it you'll understand. If your in the area check me out weekly at Papi O's on Fridays and at Studio 4 on Sundays. For more dates and information about me, DJ Chill Will go to: www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

Nesto (WODU-VA): "The cold weather is starting to take a strong hold and I have to say it feels good. Unlike most people, they enjoy the winter because they can dress up more. I would agree with that, but I don't buy a lot of clothes. I was never a "label" whore, but I do have to say I wouldn't mind rocking a little more stuff, but can't buy the good shit if you don't have the money to buy it. Feel me on that one??

Musically, the Murs album is a winner. Don't sleep on Murs. Homie got Snoop Dogg on a track. Not that this is some major event, but never thought I'd hear Murs and Snoop on a track together. And last night VH1 had another round of Hip Hop Honors. Not a bad show. It was one of the better ones in my opinion. The Cypress Hill part definitely took me back. Reminded me of the first time I heard them. Same with Naughty By Nature and the OPP track, and of course Too Short took me back. That's the Oakland homie. For some reason I was a huge fan of Too Short and 2 Live Crew back in the day. Maybe it's the lyrics, haha.. I enjoy the rated X rhymes.. speaking of rated X rhymes, Tech Nine got a new album out and it's a double disc set. It's not for everybody. Dude got that energy on the mic, and has a lot of damn songs on the CDs, but the ones that stick out to me are the ones with the X rated rhymes.. check it out if you can"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "So I was in a restaurant recently and they were playing Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney's duet "The Girl Is Mine". In retrospect, I'm pretty sure that the girl was Paul's. Which is pretty sad because he makes Andy Dick look manly.

Speaking of restaurants, I was in Mystic, CT this past weekend and ate at the original "Mystic Pizza" that inspired the 1988 film starring Julia Roberts. Inside Mystic Pizza they have a huge flatscreen showing the film on a constant loop. I thought to myself, "Hmm, what a quaint touch". Then I thought, "It's like the Michael McDonald video from '40 Year Old Virgin'". This sentiment was confirmed when the waitress brought the bill and under the total a note was scrawled that read "Thanks!!! - Christy (please shoot me in the face)".

While in Connecticut, I had to try my luck at the Indian Casino. Of course, I get stuck at the Blackjack table next to an old asian lady who wants to critique how I play my hand: "HOW YOU NO HIT ON 15!" she squawked. Mind your business lady, before I get security to give you the cattle prod treatment like in Scorsese's flick.

Well, the Red Sox made me eat my words by winning last night in dramatic fashion. My Giants are kicking ass too, being one of two teams that are undefeated in the NFL. Don't get me wrong though, I realize that the four opponents the Giants have faced this year have been about as formidable as the Georgian Army. Nonetheless, I predict a Red Sox/Giants repeat of their titles assuring that I can talk smack to all of my friends for another calendar year. If  Hulk Hogan wins the Heavyweight title belt again, then all of my sports dreams will have come true. OK, almost all of them. But I don't have much hope that we will see a rematch of "Dan Vs. Dave"...

Jason-D (RadioBoise.Org): "Just 3 weeks until the annual NY madness known as CMJ week takes place. I look forward to catching up will all of my NY people. Shouts to Double J who gave me a sneak peak at the meet and greet line up. "Wow!" is all I can really say. I look forward to it!"...

Stuart De La Rosa (KSMT-CO): "Colorado is holding down true underground Hip-Hop and it's all thanks to you "my promoters". The air is getting crisp and my hustle is cold as ever with winter approaching fast. There is a lot of good music getting pushed right now so I hope that you record gets the place it deserves on the charts. I have some feed back homework for most of yallz, so hold tight cause I expect to get it done on my days off. Big ups to everyone"...
