JENNIFER HUDSON UPDATE
A primary suspect, William Balfour, in the shooting deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother and brother is in custody but Julian King the 7-year-
old nephew of the Oscar-winning actress is still missing. A $100,000 reward is now being offered for the return of Julian. Several outlets are now confirming the body of young Julian King who's been missing since Friday was discovered early this morning inside a white Chevy Suburban SUV after a neighbor noticed the vehicle had been parked on the street since Saturday. Balfour had been married to Hudson's sister for several years but the two are separated. Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Balfour, 27, is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle. Public records show one of Balfour's addresses as the home where the shooting occurred. Our prayers go out to the Hudson's family & for the safe return of Julian King...

PHIFE RECEIVES KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg’s long fight with diabetes recently took a new turn for the better, as the Queens native finally received a kidney transplant. The new kidney comes after a waiting period of over two years, which saw Phife endure problems performing live and a dramatic weight loss through his
dialysis treatment...

Congratulations to Round 7 Producer & Winner Anonymous Twist (see photo above)  at Loud.com!  Their exclusive Beats By Dre Contest is officially in full swing and taking submissions! Serato and Ableton are happy to announce a partnership, which will pave the way for the future of Digital DJing.

With shared artist rosters from Hip-Hop (DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, A-Trak) to electronica (Paul Van Dyk, DJ Sasha), both Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live are renowned as the premier performance platforms in clubs around the globe.

While Serato's Scratch Live excels in vinyl emulation, music library control and lightning quick hands-on scratching, Ableton Live provides the tools for production, on-the-fly remixing and beat creation.

"Ableton and Serato take different approaches to modern musical performance," says Ableton CEO Gerhard Behles, "But both companies live by the philosophy that software should be straightforward, easy to use, and most importantly, reliable and stable onstage and in the studio. Ableton has never had an answer for the DJ who wants vinyl control, and rather than try to emulate what Serato do so well, we simply make sure that our products work well together."

Serato Audio Research CEO Steve West agrees. "After years of talking together, we're thrilled to be working with Ableton. It's exciting to think about what we can offer to DJs and producers: the ability to go beyond just spinning records and add a personal stamp to the music they play."

Just where this Serato and Ableton collaboration will take us has yet to be seen but one thing is clear:
the worlds of DJing, remixing and production for artists worldwide have changes ahead.

Ableton develops technology to inspire creative people. Since the company started in 1999, Ableton has attracted an extensive and highly committed community of musicians, composers, and DJs worldwide. Currently, Ableton counts about one hundred employees in its Berlin and New York offices. The company has received outstanding press, awards and customer feedback since the unveiling of Live in October 2001.

BRUCE LEE

Did you know that Bruce Lee attended the University of Washington? Did you know that he started one of his first Martial Arts Schools on 47th and the Ave in Seattle? Did you know that he taught at the UW, met his future wife at the UW, and was part of their Philosophy Department?

Probably not….

But why? Bruce Lee is one of the most internationally renowned, respected, prolific, profound and prophetic individuals of modern times. TIME Magazine named him to the Top 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century. His philosophy, character, and persona has made a lasting impression not only in the Martial Arts community, but all over the world.
So why does the UW have no known recognition of one of the most important Asian-Americans (or people in general) of modern times?
This Group was created from the students of the Bruce Lee Dedication class taught in Fall of 2007. After months of community organizing and grass-roots outreach, we have decided to request the following:

(1) A Bruce Lee Community Peace Garden, to be placed somewhere on the main campus of the UW. This space, open to WHOLE community, will be a place for rest, relaxation and reflection to gather oneself. This will truly be a place that is in the spirit of Bruce’s dedication to harmony and unity. In respect to the family and Bruce’s legacy, once approved, we will ask the family what they would like to see in the Garden to reflect Bruce’s true character and spiritual, social contributions to the world.

(2) An organized Quarterly Forum or gathering of current UW students, faculty, administration, staff and community members that will focus on the importance of understanding our history and contributions to social justice. This will act as a liberated zone for our community to openly discuss representation, and history, and how we can work together truthfully and honestly to promote equality and peace amongst all people.

(3) A more openly distributed and transparent form of information reporting to the community on what the UW is currently doing to promote social justice, and how we will together face the issues that currently keep certain groups of people unequal. Knowing that many strides have been made recently, we believe we can get more students, staff, and community members to have an equal hand in promoting these advancements while sharing and building our common goals.

By joining this group, you are making a statement to the UW Adminstration and asking them for a place where the People can be in harmony with one another...
Here is a list of the support we have gained:

Unanimous Passing of ASUW Resolution, R-14-8;
‘A Resolution in Support of Diverse Representation of the UW Student Body through the Alumnus Jun Fan “Bruce” Lee’

2) Columns, the official UW Alumni Magazine named Bruce as one of the 100 Alumni of the century and stated,

“Lee was the first Asian-American superstar when he died in 1973. Since then, his life has been the subject of more than 25 biographies and one Hollywood film. Of all the former UW students we considered, Bruce Lee is probably the most famous.”
Several businesses in the University area (predominately the “Ave”) have dedicated their support to the project. As we continue our grassroots campaign, we continue to gain more support from local community businesses.

4) We have gotten in contact with the family of Bruce Lee and have the official endorsement of the Bruce Lee Foundation, who will be in Seattle in July for the 35th Anniversary of Bruce’s death.

Thank you for supporting this project, and SPREAD THE WORD!

BRI-G SAYS "FAREWELL TO RPM":

"Well guys, this will be my last email to you as an RPM employee. In the almost 5 years I’ve worked here, I’ve gotten to do some amazing things, meet some incredible people, and learn from some of the smartest bosses I’ll ever have. When I first came here, I never would have dreamed that I would have gotten to see and do some of the things that I now take for granted as commonplace. So, while I will still continue work with the good folks over here in several different capacities, my days of being an actual employee and coming to the office everyday are over.

Over the last few months, all the motivation and drive that I had to keep plugging away, doing all that came with my position here just dried up. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. I’ve always been a first to arrive, last to leave, anything you need I’ll get done type person. And then one day it just hit me like a ton of bricks…this just isn’t what I want to do anymore.

I first came to New York from Connecticut in the winter of ’03 when my girlfriend at the time got an apartment here. All I wanted to do was DJ, but I had no clue where or how. So I got a street team job at a radio station, an internship for an indy label in the South Bronx (working Ice Shuler’s record), and stayed at her place till I could figure out my life. After I parted ways with the indy label, I took another internship at a place called RPM. After about a month, I was hired on full time…you all know the rest of the story.

I’ve always wanted to DJ here. This is the home of Jam Master Jay, Flex, Clue, Kid Capri, and the movie Juice that inspired me to be a DJ to begin with. This is where I wanted to make my mark in the DJ world. Over the last 5 years, I’ve done a lot of pinch hitting. A spot here, a spot there. Nothing really consistent. It’s that consistency that makes you a better DJ. It’s tough to pinch hit every week when you don’t know what the crowd is like. Rap one night, 80’s and pop the next, electro another…yea, it forces you to read a crowd, but at the same time, your never building anything, you’re never making your mark.

Working the Pepsi DJ Division project has always been special to me. It was my chance to get close with some of the biggest DJs in the country. See how they move and learn from them. But this year I just couldn’t get something out of my head. I’m booking flights and car services for guys. I’m creating power point presentations on what this guy has done, where that guy spins. All the while, in the back of my mind I’m thinking, I don t want to do this for this guy, I want to be this guy. I always have. I’m not jealous of guys like Clinton Sparks and Eric Cubeechee, I just want my shot to be up there and mentioned next to them.

So about a month ago, I had a bit of a melt down and had to break it all down to myself. I need to leave RPM. I need to hit the block and build with the right club promoters. I need to get some indy record projects to put some money in my pocket. I need free afternoons to practice and build sets. I need to be my own boss. I need to bet on myself and take the shot that I never took when I first moved here because I was just some no name kid who needed a job. Unbeknownst to me, that job would turn into the most amazing 4 ½ years of my life.

I’ve sat 50 feet away and learned from some of the best and brightest people in the industry for almost five years. I don’t think I can go wrong if I just apply everything I’ve learned on myself.

Please lock in my new email: BGaffeyPromo@gmail.com and use it for all future correspondence...

www.philaflava.com

We've been getting tons of positive reveiws thus far but we'd like to have your feedback. Please check it out and tell us what you think. If you like, be sure to bookmark or subscribe and of course spread the good word.

Welcome to the official blog of Philaflava.com's T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You) forum. "T.R.O.Y." is of course a reference to Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's ode to their fallen friend (Trouble T-Roy of Heavy D. and The Boyz). If the previous sentence reads like a foreign language to you, don't fret. The purpose of this blog is to explore and celebrate rap music (especially the overlooked and obscure recordings and artists) from about 1987 to 1997, give or take a few years on either end. We are not purists or elitists, just a bunch of proud rap nerds who revel in sharing our discoveries with anyone willing to listen.

Over at the T.R.O.Y. forum we spend most of our work week discussing artists like Scientifik, Godfather Don, K.M.D, Brand Nubian, Mobb Deep, Souls Of Mischief, Avatar the Articulate, Juggaknots and the like. This daily effort results in the uploading of songs and albums previously unavailable in formats other than dusty vinyl, some of which are long out of print. We frequently take the time to compile songs that share similar themes or moods. Just as the rap culture of the '90s (think Stretch and Bobbito, Sway & Tech and countless college and mixtape DJs) demanded that a class of obsessed aficionados isolate and organize the rawest tracks floating below the radar for our listening pleasure, the Internet age demands similar vigilance.

Stay tuned - in addition to providing you with a steady stream of links straight outta T.R.O.Y. we will also be posting mixes and analyses exclusive to this blog, as well as keeping an eye out for the best of what the throwback rap blogosphere has to offer. Consider this your one stop shop for "The Rap Of Yore" - just don't ever call it that...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "What's the deal? It's Ya boy DJ Chill Will of the University of Michigan's WCBN 88.3 FM. Home of the longest running college radio Hip Hop show in the Mid-West and maybe the country. Be sure to tune into the show weekly on 88.3 FM in the Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit area. Or at www.wcbn.org  Saturday nights from 9pm to 12 midnight est.
The week started off with a bang at the club. Big shout to everyone from Cleveland and Chicago that came by the club. Catch me Thursday DJing at the Red & Meth show in Detroit. After that I hit the friendly skies and invade Southern California. So no club for me this week but I left cats in good hands so have fun. Check Jimmie Kimmel (ABC) on Tuesday night, October 28th & you may see ya boy along with Nasty-Nes in the audience. For more dates and information about me, DJ Chill Will go to: www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, BC): "But fear not we had a slamming show the other night. We started things off by featuring the brand new Statik Selektah album "Stick 2 The Script", which is banging. Later we were joined by another talented producer/DJ/rapper 88 Keys, he talked about the develop and concept of "The Death Of Adam" album that drops this week on Decon. It goes without saying that this album is going to be classic in fact 88 Keys gave us a 10 point plan outlining why: www.urbanrenewalproject.net"...

D-Tragic (805HipHop.com): "What’s going down fam? Man it’s getting hot out here in Cali today! We’re having earthquake Weather or something fa sho!

I have been in the studio with Big Caz of Mo Thug Records. Mad thanks for everyone who is feeling this track! This track is getting a lot of support all around the country! If you do not have the new single “Change is Gonna Come” be sure to hit me up before the next DJ breaks it in your area. Trust me you’ll like it! In the midst of recording and listening to new music, be on the look out for new verses from the late great Tupac Shakur on Big Caz’s new album. Now you are probably thinking, damn! Haven’t we heard all of Tupac’s stuff already?? Like Is this some regurgitated, chopped up previous lyrics, etc….These are new lyrics that have not been released yet. Also Big Caz has rights to unreleased video footage that is in the works of a new short film.

Have you heard that track “Lean like a Cholo”. I’m sure you have! That’s music by a artist named “DOWN aka Kilo”. We all know that that track is mad silly, true and attention grabbing. While it hasn’t received a lot of play (I Do bump it occasionally), the new music I heard is really good. I must say he has a new style flow and some really dope production and features on his new album coming out! I don’t even know te name of it yet! Ill be sure to let you get the heaters as soon as I’m Given the green light. Can’t wait to let my Fam hear this new Tupac ish! Miss Tupac a lot! Trust me, the temptation to take the accapellas on my system that no one has is real tempting, but could be fatal!! LOL!

So if you want to, and want to show ya Boy D-Tragic some support on these new heaters, please reach out and lets build. If not, maybe next time. Just don’t do it after they blow up. I would like to see them get broken by my DJ Fam and Luv 1’s First! DO YOU HAVE MY BACK? DID YOU EVEN READ THIS? LOL! JUST CHECKIN TO SEE"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Although it sucked watching my Red Sox lose their World Series, I have to admit that the old BoSox made if farther than I expected this season. Surprisingly, I noticed that most New England fans here got over the setback fairly quickly. I think that the reality is starting to set in here that our teams are not going to win a championship every year in every sport. Imagine that. I've been reminding people that it could always be worse: we could be Yankees fans. Their top pitching prospect just got arrested in a dive strip club with a $3 cover charge and their top slugger is banging a 50 year old withered Madonna. Now if it was circa-1987 "Like A Prayer" Madonna, I could give him some props, but now....sheesh. Not to mention the reports that Madonna slathers herself in $800 body cream and wraps her self in plastic before bed. How weird. I won't spend more than $750 on body cream unlike these Elitists. After all, I'm saving for my $250,000.00 plumbing business like most average Americans.

I'm moving this week after five years in the same apartment so that is about as much fun as falling off a trampoline with a lollipop in your mouth. So far I've enjoyed moving crate after crate of records as I kick myself for saving doubles of every Def Jam promo single that was ever pressed. Then again, you can never have too many copies of "X Gon' Give It To Ya", right? You never know when you'll have to break that out at the next party. It's surefire remedy in case "If I Were A Boy" fails to spark. But how could it not?"...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "The World Series is here and I'm ready for a parade on Broad Street. It is amazing how there is always a discouraging email from so called fans of the other team( a Florida dj who wil remain nameless). Well bring it on cause the Rays are going down. I am going to enjoy my Phils and my Nittany Lions. I was listening to some New Edition albums during the week and Ralph Tresvant just has a great voice. Still very much underrated as far singers go in my opinion and the one you think OF when you think of NE despite the talents of Johnny Gill and Ricky Bell and sometimes Bobby Brown. Well I hope everyone has a good week. I will celebrate my birthday( Nov 3rd) with a championship. I take cash, checks, free cd's, gift certificates and any other payola(just kidding!!!). 5000"...

Solo (WECI-IN): "Finally Earlham College has let us broadcast live over the web....yea us! So log on to www.weciradio.org, for details or paste this link in ITUNES: 159.28.24.146:8000 in the advanced column. You can also use other players, I just know this works. I hear crystal clear sound too. Remember I am on FRIDAY nights 10 pm to 12am so please get me your wax or whatever, when I get the paper, I plan on getting some digital dj system!

DJ Solo breakin records fri 10 pm to 12 am
iceman sat 7pm to 9pm
"...

Anilast aka Stuart de la Rosa (KSMT-CO): "The 1st day of the ski season opened today with two of the resorts opening by my house. I can't beileve it's that time agian to strap on our snowboards and go to town or should I say the mountain. Keep the muisc and the interviews coming, I have already booked live artist interviews on my radio show for the next month. Keep it funky fresh yalls: www.RhythmLoungeRadio.com...
