PHIFE
RECEIVES KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg’s
long fight with diabetes recently took a new turn
for the better, as the Queens native finally received a
kidney transplant. The new kidney comes after a waiting
period of over two years, which saw Phife endure
problems performing live and a dramatic weight loss
through his
dialysis treatment...
Serato
and Ableton are happy to announce a partnership,
which will pave the way for the future of Digital DJing.
With shared artist rosters from Hip-Hop (DJ Jazzy
Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, A-Trak) to
electronica (Paul Van Dyk, DJ Sasha), both
Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live are renowned as the
premier performance platforms in clubs around the globe.
While Serato's Scratch Live excels in vinyl emulation,
music library control and lightning quick hands-on
scratching, Ableton Live provides the tools for
production, on-the-fly remixing and beat creation.
"Ableton and Serato take different approaches to modern
musical performance," says Ableton CEO Gerhard Behles,
"But both companies live by the philosophy that software
should be straightforward, easy to use, and most
importantly, reliable and stable onstage and in the
studio. Ableton has never had an answer for the DJ who
wants vinyl control, and rather than try to emulate what
Serato do so well, we simply make sure that our products
work well together."
Serato Audio Research CEO Steve West agrees.
"After years of talking together, we're thrilled to be
working with Ableton. It's exciting to think about what
we can offer to DJs and producers: the ability to go
beyond just spinning records and add a personal stamp to
the music they play."
Just where this Serato and Ableton collaboration will
take us has yet to be seen but one thing is clear:
the worlds of DJing, remixing and production for artists
worldwide have changes ahead.
Ableton develops technology to inspire creative people.
Since the company started in 1999, Ableton has attracted
an extensive and highly committed community of
musicians, composers, and DJs worldwide. Currently,
Ableton counts about one hundred employees in its Berlin
and New York offices. The company has received
outstanding press, awards and customer feedback since
the unveiling of Live in October 2001.

BRUCE
LEE
Did
you know that Bruce Lee attended the
University of Washington? Did you know that he
started one of his first Martial Arts Schools on 47th
and the Ave in Seattle? Did you know that he taught at
the UW, met his future wife at the UW, and was part of
their Philosophy Department?
Probably not….
But why? Bruce Lee is one of the most internationally
renowned, respected, prolific, profound and prophetic
individuals of modern times. TIME Magazine named
him to the Top 100 Most Important People of the 20th
Century. His philosophy, character, and persona has made
a lasting impression not only in the Martial Arts
community, but all over the world.
So why does the UW have no known recognition of one of
the most important Asian-Americans (or people in
general) of modern times?
This Group was created from the students of the Bruce
Lee Dedication class taught in Fall of 2007. After
months of community organizing and grass-roots outreach,
we have decided to request the following:
(1) A Bruce Lee Community Peace Garden, to be
placed somewhere on the main campus of the UW. This
space, open to WHOLE community, will be a place for
rest, relaxation and reflection to gather oneself. This
will truly be a place that is in the spirit of Bruce’s
dedication to harmony and unity. In respect to the
family and Bruce’s legacy, once approved, we will ask
the family what they would like to see in the Garden to
reflect Bruce’s true character and spiritual, social
contributions to the world.
(2) An organized Quarterly Forum or gathering of
current UW students, faculty, administration, staff and
community members that will focus on the importance of
understanding our history and contributions to social
justice. This will act as a liberated zone for our
community to openly discuss representation, and history,
and how we can work together truthfully and honestly to
promote equality and peace amongst all people.
(3) A more openly distributed and transparent form of
information reporting to the community on what the UW is
currently doing to promote social justice, and how we
will together face the issues that currently keep
certain groups of people unequal. Knowing that many
strides have been made recently, we believe we can get
more students, staff, and community members to have an
equal hand in promoting these advancements while sharing
and building our common goals.
By joining this group, you are making a statement to the
UW Adminstration and asking them for a place where the
People can be in harmony with one another...
Here is a list of the support we have gained:
Unanimous Passing of ASUW Resolution, R-14-8;
‘A Resolution in Support of Diverse Representation of
the UW Student Body through the Alumnus Jun Fan “Bruce”
Lee’
2) Columns, the official UW Alumni Magazine named Bruce
as one of the 100 Alumni of the century and stated,
“Lee was the first Asian-American superstar when he died
in 1973. Since then, his life has been the subject of
more than 25 biographies and one Hollywood film. Of all
the former UW students we considered, Bruce Lee is
probably the most famous.”
Several businesses in the University area (predominately
the “Ave”) have dedicated their support to the project.
As we continue our grassroots campaign, we continue to
gain more support from local community businesses.
4) We have gotten in contact with the family of Bruce
Lee and have the official endorsement of the Bruce Lee
Foundation, who will be in Seattle in July for the 35th
Anniversary of Bruce’s death.
Thank you for supporting this project, and SPREAD THE
WORD!

DEDICATED TO 90'S HIP-HOP by: Jason Gloss
http://philaflava.blogspot.com
www.philaflava.com
We've been getting tons of positive reveiws thus far but
we'd like to have your feedback. Please check it out and
tell us what you think. If you like, be sure to bookmark
or subscribe and of course spread the good word.
Welcome to the official blog of
Philaflava.com's T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce
Over You) forum. "T.R.O.Y." is of course a reference to
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's ode to their fallen friend
(Trouble T-Roy of Heavy D. and The Boyz).
If the previous sentence reads like a foreign language
to you, don't fret. The purpose of this blog is to
explore and celebrate rap music (especially the
overlooked and obscure recordings and artists) from
about 1987 to 1997, give or take a few years on either
end. We are not purists or elitists, just a bunch of
proud rap nerds who revel in sharing our discoveries
with anyone willing to listen.
Over
at the
T.R.O.Y. forum we spend most of our work week
discussing artists like Scientifik, Godfather
Don, K.M.D, Brand Nubian, Mobb Deep,
Souls Of Mischief, Avatar the Articulate,
Juggaknots and the like. This daily effort
results in the uploading of songs and albums previously
unavailable in formats other than dusty vinyl, some of
which are long out of print. We frequently take the time
to compile songs that share similar themes or moods.
Just as the rap culture of the '90s (think Stretch
and Bobbito, Sway & Tech and countless
college and mixtape DJs) demanded that a class of
obsessed aficionados isolate and organize the rawest
tracks floating below the radar for our listening
pleasure, the Internet age demands similar vigilance.
Stay
tuned - in addition to providing you with a steady
stream of links straight outta T.R.O.Y. we will also be
posting mixes and analyses exclusive to this blog, as
well as keeping an eye out for the best of what the
throwback rap blogosphere has to offer. Consider this
your one stop shop for "The Rap Of Yore" - just don't
ever call it that...

As far as us we held it down on "The Urban Renewal

comedian Jon Lajoie from Montreal! Both are doing
big things in their Hip-Hop and comedy, respectively.

We also had a first for the URP, when O-Dog
decided to take part in the trivia. Unfortunately for
the rest of us, he had some answers written on his hand,
so he actually got a few questions right. No more trivia

Jason-D
(RadioBoise.Org):
"(see photo above) First and foremost, congrats to
Obama. He did his thing for real. My wife had made a
“vote 4 obama” pumpkin for Halloween. Somebody came back
and smashed it later that night. Karma’s a bitch. Haha.
I’ll just try to make one observation that I haven’t
heard others talk about. Most people notice the
electoral votes where Obama crushed him 349 to 173. Did
you notice that in raw votes though that it was much
closer? 63.7M (52%) vs. 56.3M (46%). That’s a little
scary. Enough politics tho cause I know we all got hit
heavy with it today.
So
CMJ… Team Heineken (Jason D, Kazzeo, &
San Jose Joe) was definitely in the building. We
were in a shitload of buildings actually. I think we
spent half our time trying to be in the right f%$king
building. More on that later. The economy seemed to be
affecting everyone this year. I cut my trip a couple
days short to save money and the major labels were
M.I.A. during the entire weekend. In fact, the only guy
from a label that responded to that mile of events I
sent out was Sean @ Koch. Shouts to you
big homie for still caring about college radio. I also
met Mazzi from S.O.U.L. Purpose / Def Jam
(see photo above) who was mad cool and offered to
take us in his car service to the Black Milk show
in Brooklyn. I was supposed to call him the next day.
That’s it for label cats. This year more than ever was
the year of the Independent promoter at CMJ. The first
and BEST event I attended was the DJ meet and greet.
First person I saw was Semp from Public Wizard.
It took me about 5 minutes to find the Drink Ticket
Mafia (DTM Crew – I expect shirts next year – Jess
@ Spectre, Double J @ Foundation
Media, & Papa D @ Brick) and I was
double fisting Stella Artois from that point on.
DJ Revolution and Babu held it down on the
wheels. I got to politic ditto with Evidence,
Black Milk, Statik Selektah, Immortal Tech,
New Jack Hustle (Shawn Jackson & Newman
from Giant Panda), Blu, Marco Polo,
Torae, Revolution, and probably more I forgot. I
also ran in to an assortment of old school promoters and
homies like Kate Wolfson (formerly at ABB),
Shaw (DJ Bumrush), ID (formerly at
Hiero), Alma Geddy-Romero (formerly at
Room Service now at Decon), DJ Savvy (KSJS),
and Kev Sakoda (formerly not important or tall).
That reminds me that they had us wearing these “hello my
name is …” stickers. Kazzeo’s said “DJ Taller Than Kev
Sakoda”. All these random women were giving him high
fives. Kev, the hate runs deep in NY. Time to move back
to the West Coast bro. That night ended at about 4am
with us watching Ill Bill and Sean Price
at BB Kings. The next day, after a trip to Hooters (no
comment), we had good intentions of hangin with Masta
Ace at the Delicious Vinyl meet and greet but
the club didn’t even know about the event. I got to give
it up to Jess from Spectre though cause she was like
f%$k it. We havin our own meet and greet. More green
bottles for hours. Me, Kazz, & Joe then headed to a
local bar that was run by some homies we knew from Santa
Cruz, Cali that moved to NY. It was a great time but I
missed the Black Milk, Torae, & others show in Brooklyn
that was probably the show of the trip. The next night I
met Papa D & Double J for dinner before the
Stetsasonic reunion show. The flyer said doors open
at 7pm. We got there at 8:30pm and they still weren’t
open. We were then forced to sit thru 3 of the most
unbearable hours in recent hip hop history. Whodini
came out and were filming (shopping I guess) a new
show called the fastest rapper. There were four rappers
but it took 2 hours to get thru 3 rounds of battles. I
had a flight the next morning so I left the club at
about midnight and none of the people on the flyer had
performed yet including Stetsasonic. I did catch part of
their sound check though but damn, that would have be
classic. So it was definitely a good trip overall
especially due to the Team Heineken homies Kazzeo and
Joe. The upside of being at the wrong place at the wrong
time was that I had plenty of time to build with the
people who were stuck with me. So again, extra shouts to
Jessica, Papa D, and Double J. Your generosity was very
much appreciated. Here’s some pics I took over the CMJ
weekend…

"ColdRigourous" Leahy (WHUS-CT): "You
know, all the way to the end, I was afraid America was
not going to be able to overcome racism. F#K YEAH IT
CAN!!!!!!!!"...
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA):
"History has been made! (see photo above) I first voted
nearly 20 years ago and this was without a doubt the
most important election I have been involved in. Back in
the early 60's, Sam Cooke had a song called "A
Change Is Gonna Come". Well the change has come.
Barack Obama has become the first African American
man to hold the office. After casting my vote, I spent
all afternoon into the night watching CNN
as the results came in. And, as always is the case, I
have a lot of observations. First off, I have to say
that it was a total joke the way that Jesse Jackson
was shown in the crowd during Obama's acceptance
speech. Jesse Jackson was shown crying in the crowd.
Isn't he the same guy who was talking shit about Obama
during the campaign? Jesse Jackson is a hypocrit. Sorry
if that upsets some of you but that's how I see it.
Secondly, the biggest downside to Obama being elected is
that now Oprah Winfrey will now have a direct in to the
White House. She's already poisoned enough people with
her bullshit TV show and now she has the Presidents ear.
Oh great. But despite those two things, I am proud to
have voted for Obama and truly think that he has the
charisma and the ability to connect with people to make
the change he's promised. Now is the time. Let's end
this war in Iraq and concentrate on the real problem,
Afghanistan. Let's get the economy back in line. And
let's get health care affordable.
On another note, it's really a bummer that while we take
a giant leap forward with the presidential election,
California takes a 5 steps backward by apparently
passing Proposition 8. As far as we've come, we still
can't recognize equality for all. And that's a sad fact.
Another sad fact is that my beloved Oakland Raiders
have yet to come to the realization that we wasted
31 million dollars on a bullshit draft pick by the name
of JaMarcus Russell. This non productive waste of
roster space refused to attend his first year of
training camp, he barely played last year, and this year
(so far) he's produced nothing. He's 6'6, 250 pounds and
is afraid to scramble for a first down. Get some balls
already man. This past weekend was the worst showing by
the team since 1962. Our defense has been very solid
this year but highly overworked due to the lack of
productivity of the offense. We can't have all these 3
and out's. Not to mention this past week the offense
only managed one 3rd down conversion. What the hell is
that? Sure the offensive line has holes in it, namely
Robert Gallery. But the offense is led by a guy who
can't get the job done. Period. He's gotta go. End of
story.
Shout out to Lefty from the Bash Bros. who
stopped by and hung out on the show last week.

Nate
Abney
(WKDU-Philly):" What an exciting couple days. The
parade on Broad Street was great. I walked from
30th&Market all the way down to City Hall then down
Broad Street to the stadium(with the help of a free
RED BULL). I received free hand sanitizer and high
fived everyone from City Hall to Citizen's Bank Park. I
appreciate what the Red Sox fans experienced in
04 now. Chase Utley became a Philly icon with his
World Champion speech, and J ROL made everyone
that is a Mets fan upset(who cares you ain't won
one since 86 now what). What a great way to celebrate a
birthday with a parade that was 25 years in the making.
Congrats to Barak Obama. I can only hope change
will come and that people actually give him a fair
chance and we overcome all the hate that may come with
this historic event and focus on the future.
Penn State got the shaft again and the Birds
rolled Seattle. Till next week someone tell MJ
the Jackson Five reunion is not a reunion
without him onboard"....
