I
recently found out that DJ Raw-B from SF's
KUSF has turned off his mic after 14 years. Please
read the following from Raw-B:
It is
with deep regret that I inform you that Beatsauce will
be retiring from our on-air programming Sunday nights on
KUSF. For 14 years Raw B, Wisdom, J-Boogie
and special guests have provided an alternative for
Hip-Hop fans every Sunday night from 6-8 PM on KUSF
90.3FM.
Creating a place for local talent and budding superstars
to drop their beats and rhymes, Beatsauce was awarded
the SF Bay Guardian’s “Goldie Award” and voted “Best
Hip-Hop Radio Show” by the SF Weekly.
The Beatsauce crew has always supported independent
Hip-Hop artists that sometimes get overlooked by major
radio stations. We’ve hosted both locals and future
superstars on the air. Artists like Gangstarr,
KRS-One, EPMD, The Jungle Brothers, Mobb Deep, Outkast,
Blackalicious, Jay-Z, Slick Rick, J-Live, Lyrics Born,
Bored Stiff, Jurassic 5, Peanut Butter Wolf, Common, Big
L, Afrikka Bambatta, The X-Men, The Whoridas, Group
Home, Dre Dog, The Alkaholiks, The Artifacts, Prince
Paul, Eminem and many more have graced our airwaves.
The show was created in 1994, when Billy Jam
stopped producing “Hip Hop Slam” (KUSF’s original
Hip-Hop programming). Young interns and USF
students Rob Blach (Raw B) and Justin Boland
(J-Boogie) took their media classes the next step
and created “Beatsauce” with local DJ Wisdom
(then known as Winnie B).
Over time, the Beatsauce crew threw parties, broke new
artists, hosted local events, gave away tons of tickets
and helped push the independent nature of Bay Area
Hip-Hop music. Tales of old Beatsauce tapes and
religious listeners still turn up as new and old fans
discovered the Sunday night treat. Beatsauce also worked
with other KUSF shows The Friday Night Session
and Future Breaks to raise money for an in house
DJ set up, donating turntables and a mixer to KUSF.
.
We would sincerely like to thank True Clothing, SFO,
Vapor Room, Sunshine Coast, Papalote, Milk, Poleng
Lounge, Golden Triangle, City Hall Records, Open
Mind Records and all the businesses that helped keep us
on the air at KUSF with their support. We'd also like to
thank all the venues and club promoters who donated free
tickets to our devote listeners. Without business like
these, it would be near impossible to keep Independent
media outlets up and running. We owe you all deep
gratitude and appreciation.
Beatsauce will now be moving to an all digital format as
a bi-monthly podcast hosted by
www.Brooklynradio.net and available on the
iTunes podcast page. We will also be uploading old shows
and classic interviews from the vaults to the player
featured on
www.trueskoolnetwork.com and
www.myspace.com/beatsauceradio. For now, time
and life have taken over as DJ Wisdom has moved to New
York to raise his family, DJ Raw B has taken on a
professional career in the world of broadcasting, and
J-Boogie pursues the elusive world of music production.
DJ Diversify who joined the team in 2006 is active in
the local club scene and produces weekly mixes available
on his website

The

Best
Surprise MC/Producer Collabo:
Kurupt / Pete Rock "Yes Sir"
Appearing this summer out of nowhere, the underrated
Kurupt glides effortlessly in hazy fog over Pete's
gentle keys. East Coast Gangster music at its finest.
Honorable Mention:
Ludacris / DJ Premier "MVP"
Worst
Surprise MC/Producer Collabo:
T.I. / Just Blaze "Live Ya Life"
What
a monster by Just Blaze. This beat was begging for a
quality MC - and was a surefire hit with Rihanna added
to the hook. Enter T.I. - with his little man flow that
was barely memorable and instantly swallowed by the
track. T.I.'s vocals compared to Just's instrumental is
like Raekwon's threats compared to Method Man's on the
torture skit from the 36 Chambers album. Don't remember
what skit I'm talking about?
Method Man: "I'll f*cking sew your a$$hole closed and
keep feeding you and feeding you".
Raekwon: "I will also do something unpleasant to you".
Plug
Nas or Jadakiss into "Live Ya Life" and you have one for
the ages. What a waste. Instead it was like hearing
Malachi The Nutcracker bumble over Primo’s gems on the
“Livin’ Proof” LP.
Most
Controversial Song:
East Coast Avengers "Kill Bill O'Reilly"
Assuming that hip hop artists like Fox News is as stupid
as assuming that Fox News anchors like hip hop. The New
England based East Coast Avengers (Esoteric,
Trademarc, D.C. The Midi Alien) took it to a new
level by releasing a record fantasizing about the
execution of O'Reilly and cohort Michelle Malkin. The
record raced around the internet and landed the crew
from around my way on the Keith Olberman Show and on
many venom-filled right wing blogs. Myspace (a Fox
subsidiary) even pulled the plug on their page. I
personally chose to abstain from the record; despite the
fact that producer D.C. The Midi Alien is a personal
friend of mine. When I had him on my program shortly
after the album's release, he was in awe that so many
people nationally had heard a record produced in the
depths of New Hampshire.
Least
Controversial Song:
DJ Revolution feat. KRS-ONE "The DJ"
Truer
words were never spoken on this guide through who is
really a DJ and who isn’t. Here’s one of KRS’s many
jewels:
"If
you've got Serrato, Bravo! / But if you can't cut
vinyl records you won't be able to follow / me, a true
MC"
Great
classic DJ Premier angry ad-lib on the track too!
Best
12" Single:
Giant Panda "Speakers Pop" b/w "Speakers Funk" &
"Smooth"
Arguably the best party cut of the year with equally
banging b-side remix "Speakers Funk". Aptly titled
non-album cut "Smooth" reminds us of what a 12" single
used to be like. Beats for all tracks included and full
color artwork too! All too rare these days...
Honorable Mention:
Black Milk “Give The Drummer Sum” b/w “The Matrix” feat.
Pharoahe Monch, Sean Price & DJ Premier
Two
of the best form “Tronic” with all versions a DJ would
need.
Best
Street Story:
Kool G Rap "On The Rise Again"
The
Kool Genius of Rap brings out another tongue twisting
hood tale over one of Primo's best in recent memory.
Songstress Haylie Duff adds the seasoning that kept this
one on repeat in my car.
Beat
That I Wished I Had Produced:
Astonish "Broken Dreams" (Produced by The Molemen)
Ethereal concoction with strong drums and elegant
strings. Simple but intellectual. I would almost expect
to hear this playing in some art museum. I wish more hip
hop was produced like this. The Molemen have been slept
on for years and are a “must buy” for me every time they
come out with something.
Weirdest Beat Of The Year:
Esoteric "Godless America" (Produced by Esoteric)
I
guess I should have known that any single off an album
called "Esoteric Vs. Japan" would have an unorthodox
approach, but this slow roller was on some other ish.
The hook was accented by someone rattling off what
sounds like Japanese gibberish (to my closed minded
American ears) and was unlike anything out in '08. I
played it easily a dozen times on my show and as I sit
writing this I still don't know if I like the song or
not. It's that weird. Right up there with Dr. Octagon.
But no space doodoo pistols.
Best
Fake Primo Beat:
Braille “The IV” (Produced by Marco Polo)
Marco
almost had us fooled – but the drums always tell the
story. Great track by another rising star in the
production world. (Rob Swift doing the cuts also gave it
away).
Best
Trend In Hip Hop:
The Return Of The EP
Artists finally are starting to realize that less is
more. Amidst the blitz of "street albums" and slim line
mix tapes that hallmarked 2007, many artist forgot that
6-8 good songs will earn you a lot more fans and spins
than 50 mediocre songs. Strong mini-releases from The
Alchemist, Baje One, Astonish, Evidence and Common
Market rejuvenated the "snack" format that was popular
in the mid-90's.
Worst
Trend In Hip Hop:
No Cleans
I
understand that this problem really only affects radio
DJs like me, but what do we have to do these days for a
goddamn edited version? I think that a lot of these
artists and labels have forgotten that some of us are
still subject to FCC regulations. Getting clean LPs and
singles has never been so difficult. It makes exposing
all of this great new music much more challenging and
that's a shame. If they want to save money, the artists
could always curse less too. Imagine that…
Best
Remix:
NYG'z "UR Dayz R #d" feat. Royce 5'9", Lady of Rage, &
Bumpy Knuckles (Produced by DJ Premier)
The
song was already heat, but Premier flipped the beat and
added a trio of strong MCs who all came correct. It was
really great to hear Lady of Rage on something again,
too.
Honorable Mention:
Skyzoo "The Necessary Evils" (Produced by Needlz)
Haunting rework that was great for fast driving down a
highway.
Worst
Remix:
Skillz "So Far So Good" feat. Common & Talib Kweli
(Produced by Usef Dinero)
I
loved the original, and when the remix came out with
Kweli added I was hyped. Then I realized that it was the
exact same song with Kweli tacked on the end. No beat
flip. No new vocals from Common or Skillz. Talk about
phoning it in. Sheesh.
Album
I Would Have Given A Sh!t About 5 Years Ago:
The Roots “Rising Down”
It’s
not that I don’t like The Roots anymore. I guess I’m
just over the fact that every frat hat and windbreaker
wearing college kid thinks that they are the best thing
since Dave Matthews Band. I hear it all the time. “Hey
man, The Roots are like….a hip hop band!”. Wow, welcome
to 15 years ago. That annoyance aside, I guess that The
Roots just don’t seem relevant to me anymore, and that’s
kinda sad.
Best
Instrumental LP:
Sid Roams “Nstrmntl”
Bravo
and Joey Chavez are one of the production teams to keep
an eye on. This album was an MCs dream – bangers you
know and some new “vault” material for you to flex your
skills on. You had to move quickly though as many of the
tracks were teasers at under 2:00.
Best
Super Group:
E.M.C.
Masta
Ace, Punchline, Wordsworth, and Stricklin’ are all
lyricists who have not received their just due. Their
chemistry is natural and if you weren’t familiar with
their separate projects, you’d swear that they never
rhymed apart.
Best
Underground Single:
Statik Selektah “To The Top” feat. Cassidy, Saigon, &
Termanology
Masterfully produced, the guitar work alone would keep
me interested. The three amigos slaughter this one
lyrically, with clever boasts and verbal jabs. A very
appropriate dose of autotune and a memorable M.O.P.
sample lodge the hook in your brain like a fishing lure.
Best
Commercial Single:
Nas “Hero” feat. Keri Wilson
Polow
Da Don does it two summers in a row by delivering a
heater that would have any emcee salivating. Nas pours
it on delivering a performance as high octane as the
track. Great song to have in your ears on the treadmill.
The
Fiction Award:
Lil Wayne selling 2.9 million copies of “The Carter III”
It
sure helps your first week sales when your record
company buys a million copies themselves.
Most
Slept On LP:
Snowgoons “Black Snow”
The
four man crew from Deutscheland avoided the sophomore
jinx and actually came out stronger than their last LP.
With a dizzying roster of MCs on the album, the real
star was the epic and energetic production that did not
wane from front to rear.
Funniest Rhyme:
Foul Mouth Jerk “One Room Shack”
In
the vein of Del’s “Sleeping On My Couch” and Thirstin
Howl III’s “I Still Live With My Moms”, FMJ’s tale of
his busted crib was detailed and probably truthful. “One
Room Shack” is a really fun record and another prime
example of what hip hop is missing these days.
Best
Album Title:
Little Vic “Each Dawn I Die”
Wish
I had thought of it. Says a lot with very little.
Worst
Album Title:
.40 Cal “Mooga”
I
couldn’t even say it on the air without cracking up.
Just plain ridiculous.
Best
Album Cover:
Jedi Mind Tricks “A History Of Violence”
As
eerie as the music within, this was one of few album
covers this year that actually made me want to hear the
album with no advance knowledge of the release.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B001EKTAXS/sr=1-1/qid=1231892760/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=5174&s
=music&qid=1231892760&sr=1-1
Worst
Album Cover:
Heltah Skeltah “D.I.R.T. (Da Incredible Rap Team)”
Although I do think that Rock and Sean Price (Ruck) have
been super heroes on the mic sometimes, they didn’t have
to go this far to make the point. Cheesy doesn’t even
begin to describe this.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B001CW7M1U/ref
=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=5174&s=music
Foot-In-The-Mouth Lyric Of The Year:
Nas on Young Jeezy’s “My President”
“Just
two albums in / I’m the realest n*gga on this label”
I
guess Nas forgot what label Young Jeezy is also signed
to.
Best
Crossover Album:
MURS “MURS For President”
MURS
made the leap from indy to major with his new LP and did
a very good job of sticking to his roots. Aside from a
few forced collabos (Snoop Dogg & Kokane) the album
sounded very much like something MURS would have put out
on his own while staying accessible. An enjoyable listen
throughout.
Worst
Crossover Album:
Kanye West “808s & Heartbreak”
Okay,
I know that Kanye was a borderline pop artist before
“808s” but “Graduation” was still grounded in the hip
hop world and contained a lot of inside references to
the genre. I was dying for “808s”, hoping that it would
be the next classic in his continually improving
catalog. What I got instead was an auto-tune saturated
R&B disc that made it through my CD player exactly once.
Huge disappointment.
City
On The Come Up:
Seattle
Although I was a big fan of the Oldominion crew, I
hadn’t been paying much attention to the Space Needle
city these days. But strong LP releases from Jake One,
Common Market, and Blue Scholars showed that this is the
next hotbed of underground activity. Look for more
artists emerging in 2009.
Worst
Freestyle Of The Year:
Shaquille O’Neal “Kobe How My Ass Taste”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDT7KHr0OoI
Jaw
dropping non-sensical lyrics as Shaq rails against Kobe
Bryant and homeless guys while comparing himself to
Biggie Smalls. The rhymes remind me of drunken white
guys trying to freestyle at parties that I went to at
college (repeating the same things over and over). Truly
a “can’t miss moment” from 2008.
Best
Freestyle Of The Year:
Shaquille O’Neal “Kobe How My Ass Taste”
OK,
so aside from being hilarious and having infinite replay
value, Shaq did truly freestyle. Which is more than I
can say for most of the alleged “MCs” that I saw this
past year spitting verses on radio shows and in concert
that later appeared on a studio track.
Hip
Hop A-Hole Of The Year:
DMX
His
weekly arrests for crimes such as animal abuse and
impersonating a police officer clinched the title for
Dark Man X. If he had just done steroids with Barry
Bonds and Roger Clemens he might have been the Hip Hop
A-Hole of the decade.
Hip
Hop Albums That Made Me Smile:
E.M.C. “The Show”
Masta
Ace, Punchline, Wordsworth, and Stricklin’ teamed up to
carve out a gem with “The Show”. Masta Ace has always
been known for cohesive concept albums, and his sage
guidance drives this one in the right direction. Quality
beats and razor sharp rhymes are the hallmark, while the
crew spars with sparing guest stars who just add icing
to the cake. The high point is “Traffic” feat. Little
Brother, a song that refuses to wear out its welcome.
Atmosphere “When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That
Sh!t Gold”
Aside
from a great title, Slug and Ant managed to make an
alternative hip hop album that didn’t sound weird.
Melodic and introspective, “When Life…” had many great
storyteller cuts including my favorite, “Your
Glasshouse” which told the tale of a hung over morning
full of regret. That’s a road I think that most of us
have been down.
DJ
Revolution “King Of The Decks”
Awesome music from an awesome DJ – plain and simple.
Rev’s production is on par with anyone else who is hot
on the underground scene right now and his guest stars
all seem hand-picked and within his inner circle. A true
school hip hop record that was a little heavy on skits,
but much heavier on quality tracks.
Reks
“Grey Hairs”
Another LP chock full of top notch beats. Reks is a
little better known in New England than in other parts
of the country, but I think that will change soon.
Primo, Large Professor, and Lil Fame all chipped in
beats to an album that was well produced, provocative,
honest, and introspective. Extra points for getting his
Frank Caliendo on with the track “All In One”.
DJ
Muggs & Planet Asia “Pain Language”
Talk
about West Coast firepower. Super sinister tracks with
some help from great guest stars like B-Real and GZA.
Any doubters should listen to “Lions In The Forest” and
you shall be converted. Another pair of artists who have
been on their grind for years and deserve more respect
than they have garnered.
Hip
Hop Albums That Made Me Frown:
Nas
“Untitled”
Wow,
what a lot of build up to nothing. Despite the promise
of “Hero” and “Black President”, the album is overly
political, bitter, and haphazardly produced. Most
tragically, typical cohorts DJ Premier, Large Professor
and The Alchemist are left out in the cold.
Jedi
Mind Tricks “A History Of Violence”
It’s
not that this LP was awful. The production was of
typical varying quality from Stoupe The Enemy of Mankind
and some tracks hit while some definitely did not. The
reunion with estranged member Jus Allah was totally
unnecessary, as all of us JMT fans have been happy with
Vinnie’s solo outings for many years now. At a slender
(10) tracks, this LP had too many guest stars, too much
Jus Allah, and not enough of the formula that have made
JMT one of the top selling underground artists of the
last five years.
Illa
J “Yancey Boys”
Another LP that was far from terrible, just terribly
disappointing. The mid-90’s Dilla tracks remind us why
there are reasons that artists do not release their
whole catalog. It is clear that Dilla was still finding
his voice as an artist when he made these beats, and the
cream was clearly lopped off the top by The Pharcyde and
other artists in his camp during that time frame. Illa J
steers the album towards an R&B vibe, with too much
ad-libbing and impromptu singing. A really nice concept,
but not a satisfying listen.
Large
Professor “Main Source”
I
thought that I was going to love this album, especially
after hearing the leaked “Hardcore Hip Hop” produced by
Marco Polo and the very solid “Hot: Sizzlin’, Scorchin’,
Torchin’, Blazin’”. When the album arrived, I found it
full of clunky, boring beats. I hoped to hear Large Pro
collaborating with Big Noyd, Jeru The Damaja, and Lil
Dap over tracks that bore their names, but instead they
were one-off verses lasting no more than 90 seconds
each. To add insult to injury, “The Hardest” capped this
mess after already being included on AZ and Styles P’s
earlier releases in the year.
Skillz “The Million Dollar Backpack”
Skillz suffers from the same affliction that plagues
Canibus, Chino XL, and Ras Kass. He is an ultra-talented
lyricist that cannot pick beats consistently. After the
release of lead single “So Far So Good” feat. Common, I
was amped for this LP. I thought that Skillz had finally
gotten over the hump. But he didn’t remember the lesson
that you can’t release the best song as your first
single. Drenched in wack production and cringe-worth
choruses, I really hope that Skillz has a million
dollars in his backpack. Because he won’t make a million
selling this record.
Will
you win an “Edgie” next year? I will be watching like a
hawk...

I
hope everyone enjoyed their time off over the
holidays. I know I did. I spent the first week of
the year as I have for the past several in Las Vegas
working at the Consumer Electronic show. I only had
a few Hip-Hop sitings during the convention. The
M-Audio booth was debuting some new dj software.
They had the Rock Steady Crew breakdancing in
their booth while the DJ cut up b-boy classics like
It's Just Begun. I also saw DJ Skee with a
camera crew in tow but couldn't tell what he was up
to. Definitely saw some interesting technology.
LG has a cell phone watch coming on some
inspector gadget type ish. They have a Prada
version for the ballers. Mini laptops or netbooks
seemed to be the rage. These are laptops running xp
or linux but are the size of a portable dvd player
and typically cost about $300-$500. They are meant
to be a second pc that you would use to surf the web
while watching tv or traveling. My favorite part of
the show is always the automotive section. All the
major car audio manufacturers have demo vehicles
with incredible sound systems. I saw the new
Nissan GT-R which has all the car
magazines geeked. It's definitely some fast and the
furious business. I also happened to be staying at
the Mandalay Bay which was home to the adult video
awards. I did not make it inside the awards show
mostly due to the ridiculous ticket prices but I did
end up watching all the ahem *stars* arrive
at the show. We just happened to come out of one of
hotel restaurants when they were letting the
attendees in. So I just happened to stand there and
drink beer and watch. Very much the freak show and
very entertaining. Way too much bad plastic surgery
for me though. There were hundreds of fake pimps
with furs and lots of 50+ year old men with barely
legal girls accompanying them. Kazzeo,
there's still hope for you bro. |

(WODU-VA):
"What's good fam? Hope everyone had a good holiday
season. The new year is already moving by at a nice
pace. There have been some changes for me already this
year. Most of last year I was in training for a new job,
and I was commuting from Northern VA to Southern VA for
about 9 months. My training is over and my new job is
located in northwest Virginia. I will still be doing my
show down in Norfolk, VA just as I have since 1996.
However, I may try to get on a different station where
my job has me now. I will keep everyone updated on any
changes in station, and mailing address. By the way if
anyone has any C.Hamilton singles please share
the wealth, and what are peoples thoughts on this
Asher Roth dude? Oh yes, big ups to the homie
Papa D for being a sworn in lawyer now. Good stuff
homie, congrats...
DJ
Sage (CFRO-Canada): "Kicked it off with some
cuts off the Notorious soundtrack. We featured a couple
of the early demos that are on the soundtrack. I really
hoping the movie isn't cheesy, but gauging from the
soundtrack it should be pretty solid. Guest wise, we
were joined first by David Faustino, who has a
new show called "Star-ving" premiering on January 16th
on
www.crackle.com.
Check out the preview now! Zumbi from Zion I
also checked in and discussed their upcoming album
as well as his and Amp Live decade involvement in the
music business. Creativity they are also looking forward
and I am amped (no pun attended) to check out their 5th
studio "The Take Over" available on February 26 on
Gold Dust.

Abney
(WKDU-Philly): "Well it is 2009 and I'm looking
forward to a the new year. Alot of things took place in
between my last email and now. My grandmother passed
away before Christmas. It was tough but the fact that I
had a grandmother who helped make me who I am today is a
blessing enough. I thank God for her impact on my life.
As one saga ends another began as my niece celebrated
her first Christmas with us. I truly will cherish these
moments.
On the music front look out for JJ BROWN'S
solo album dropping this year( Take a wild guess as to
who is on it?). If you said Louis Logic you're
right but there is this other guy you might know too,
stay tuned.
Lastly while I was not really thrilled with a lot of
music in 2008 here is to hoping 2009 will bring some
better product and not just 6 good albums. Weekly
deposits will still be made to the Sckuykill River,
but I am hoping this will happen less frequently. So
let's get it going. Until next week"...
DJ
Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "Big shout out to DJ Raw
B from KUSF's "Beatsauce Show". Heard
this past week that Raw B is ending the show to move on
to bigger and better things. Congratulations on the long
run at KUSF and good luck on your future endeavors.
Things that piss me off!!!
1. When I'm doing my show and I pick up the request
line to hear a little kid stuttering over what to ask
for as their parent is whispering in the background.
It's so obvious that the parent wants to make a request
but thinks it will be cute to have their kid get on the
phone. Guess what idiot's, it's not cute. it's annoying.
2. People who are not able to go anywhere without taking
their dogs with them. My day is stressful enough without
being startled as I walk through a parking lot past a
car with a r abid mutt slamming against the windows,
barking, and trying to get out to rip a hole in my
throat.
3. The fact that I try to be a law abiding citizen while
no one else seems to heed the fact that talking on a
cell phone is illegal while driving here in California.
I'm not talking about the hands free thing. I have no
issue with that. But I still at least 10 people a day
still holding the phone while driving.
4. That idiots always have to riot and destroy innocent
people's property. How exactly is it justified for a
convenience or an electronics store to be looted when a
bitch ass cop kills an un-armed suspect? How did the
store have anything to do with the cop's actions? The
only thing that is proven when this happens is that cops
aren't the only criminals in the situation.
5. Rappers trying to sing. I'm sorry but the new
Eminem and 50 Cent records suck!!! God,
please get back to being real mc's and not pampered
rappers.
Happy birthday to my homie Tahmi Gotti and um,
um, oh yeah to myself. Capricorns baby!!!"...
