Cutbacks have hit the Urban Promotion department for two labels under the Sony Music umbrella. At Jive Records, Los Angeles-based West Coast Promotion Manager, Rod "Roddy Rod" Edwards and Southeast Mix Show Director Chad Brown have been let go due to budget cuts. At J Records, VP of Urban Adult Promotion Stephanie Lopez has been let go after being with the label since its inception in 2000. National Director of Mix Show Promotion "Big Ro" Johnson has also departed. We wish them all well in their future endevours...

On a sad note, the half-brother of musician Apl.de.ap, one of the creative forces & members of the Black Eyed Peas, was murdered in the Philippines last Tuesday. Joven Pineda Deala was 21...

A MESSAGE FROM DIDDY TO THE DJ
SEAN COMBS has blamed a current lack of creativity in the global DJ scene for stifling Hip-Hop music. The rap mogul is adamant that the genre is in the midst of a "recession" because there are so few talented beatmakers around to help create interesting tracks.

He tells MTV.com, "People have figured out the formula when they make records for radio, and DJs ain't DJs no more. DJs don't break records no more. DJs don't play album cuts. DJs play what is going to move the crowd. DJs, they don't expose you to the newness. That was the DJs' thing. Hip-Hop is in a recession also."

But Combs is convinced that there is enough fresh, young talent in the music industry at the moment to make sure that rap artists will continue to sell records.

He adds, "(Hip-Hop) is not dead, it's definitely way better than where it was at, as far as with 'Ye, T.I. and with Jeezy. It's so much great stuff out there, the responsibility has to come with the DJs"...

To All My L.A. Peoples from DJ RHETTMATIC
"As many of you know, February is what we like to call "DILLA MONTH" in honor of our fallen brother, James Yancey aka J-Dilla. This marks the 3rd Anniversary of Dilla's passing (Feb. 10th) as well as his birthday (Feb. 7th). This is also our 3rd annual tribute to one of the best Hip Hop Producers of all time. We actually brought back Nightlife just for this particular occasion.
We are also doing this to help out our beloved "Ma Dukes", Mrs. Maureen Yancey, the mother of Dilla. As you can see, we haven't mention or have any pictures or likeness of Dilla, due to the on-going legal situation with the Dilla Estate. If you do not know the situation, please go to: http://stonesthrow.com/news/2009/01/the-battle-for-j-dilla-s-legacy & read the details. It is serious.

We also know that this event falls on Valentine's Day, but we hope that you can make it out to support. We are taking donations at the door & donating some of the money that we make at the door. Everything & anything helps.
Also, if you cannot make it, you can help out & support Ma Dukes by going here & purchase these following products: http://stonesthrow.com/news/2009/01/raise-it-up-for-ma-dukes

The second link also links to a paypal account that goes directly to Ma Dukes.

OBAMA INSPIRED, FATBOYS REUNITE FOR CHANGE, AFTER 20 YEAR HIATUS!!!

Pioneering Platinum Rap group, The Fat Boys have joined together again, to launch a full-time comeback to music, movies, and television. With the help of Philly MC/Producer Elijah, The Fat Boys have recorded their first track together in 20 years! The song, “Unity”, is a remix of a song originally produced by Elijah and whose main concept is about bringing all different types of people together, to strive toward positive goals and change.

The surviving members of the Fat Boys launched www.OriginalFatBoys.com their first official homepage on November 5, 2008. The Original Fat Boys are both managed by Uncle Louie Management and Uncle Louie Music Group, Louis L. Gregory, where they are embarking on a comeback album and tour. Amoung many other ventures, the Fat Boys also have plans of doing a reality TV show in search of a new member, along with a daytime childrens cartoon.

With a pivotal role in the early development of Hip-Hop, the Fat Boys have a unique perspective on how far the genre has come, how it has continued to influence the world, and where it may be heading. The Fat Boys are currently looking to do interviews and features, to tell about why they decided to reunite after so long, what they are currently working on, and what their future plans are. With the world calling for change, the Fat Boys have come back with the answer. UNITE! THE FAT BOYS ARE BACK, AND YOU KNOW THEY CAN NEVER BE WHACK!!!...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver): "We got it going with a double shot from our friend Braille's upcoming disc with Texas producer S1, "CloudNineteen" on Hiphop Is Music. Sounds like one rapper and one producer vibing out for a whole album together remember those days. We will definitely be dropping more exclusives from this album before the street date of March 3!
www.myspace.com/braillebrizzy

We were joined by an MC who has been enjoying heavy rotation here on the Urban Renewal Project, Homeboy Sandman. The talented Queens rapper
talked about his banger, "Gun Control", and hip-hop in general how it isn't a game and artist can't be afraid to raise the bar and experiment. Homeboy Sandman has been doing that with his socially responsible and futuristic rap stylings. Need proof check out his full length's "Nourishment (Second Helping)", "Actual Factual Pterodactyl" and the free mixtape "There Is No Spoon".
www.HomeboySandman.com

We also had a hectic interview with Musab from that 2007 trio of new signings by Hieroglyphics Imperium. This talented MC is able to driving down the Vegas strip and ordering food and drinks all while to talking to us! And if you think that is talent wait until you hear this rapper's 1st single "Get Life" from "Heaven, Girls, Hell", but in the between check out "Slick's Box" and the rest of the back catalogue.

Check out www.UrbanRenewalProject.net now to download the podcast! Great new tracks from Heltah Skeltah, Common, Lords Of The Underground, Raekwon, Moka Only and more!"...

So last week I mentioned how I'm really looking forward to the Terminator tv series to start back up. And I am. However, despite being a huge fan of the Terminator movies, I have no intention of going to see the next movie. I am so disgusted by Christian Bale's outburst that got leaked on the internet the other day. What a fuckin' asshole this guy is. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of tirade. Just because the director of photography was doing his job and mistakenly caused a gliche in Bale's concentration, that is no reason to verbally kill the guy with profanity and threaten him with physical violence. Just another case of some dickhead taking themselves way to seriously when, in reality, all they do is read words. Sure it takes a certain level skill but it's not like the director of photography interupted you will you were performing open heart surgery on the President. Get over yourself moron.

Congratulations to Pittsburgh for the big Superbowl win. Boy what a fourth quarter that was. That's what football is supposed to be. I wasn't very impressed by any of the commercials though. Nothing really stood out to me. The halftime show was pretty good. But in a way, it was weird seeing a 60 year old dud e sliding around on his knees. But it was good. Not as good as Prince but good"...

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "What's good? It's DJ Chill Will of the University of Michigan's WCBN 88.3 FM. Home of the longest running college radio Hip Hop show in the Mid-West and maybe the country. Be sure to tune into the show weekly on 88.3 FM. in the Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit area. Or at www.wcbn.org Saturday nithts from 9 to 12 midnight est.  Seems like it getting colder and colder around here and it just ain't right. But on to some heat, we have a dope weekend coming up. Nas and DJ Green Lantern will be at the Eastern Michigan Convacational Center with yours truly on the 1's and 2's. With special guest Royce Da 5'9" representing Tha D (Detroit) and doing his thing. Rumor has it some real special guest will be in the house for the show, can you say Shady? Also Little Brother will be in town to rip the mic. So if your in town check me out at the show. Or check me out at the official afterparty at Papi O's. For mor information about me DJ Chill Will go to www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "Another week of snow and stuff. The football season is over. The World Series was won in Philly. The SuperBowl in Pittsburgh. Not bad. I went to see Notorious and after watching this movie I came to the conclusion that Rakim is still the greatest emcee of all time. This movie gave me no reason to think otherwise. As we were walking out I voiced my opinion to my man Double Ayes and some girl who looked like she was 18 looked at me and I repeated my position. Sorry if people are pissed off but that is just my opinion. Everyone has their own view of the greatest emcee"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "I hated to spoil the surprise, but I didn't need Punxsutawney Phil to tell me that there is six more weeks of winter. After wracking up another evil 10 inches this past week, I'm guessing that I will be seeing the shadow of my snow pile on Memorial Day.

I was reminded of a valuable lesson this past weekend: do not go near a grocery store on Super Bowl Sunday. I was fresh out of goodies on Super Bowl Sunday, so I figured that if I went right before the game (5pm EST) the mad rush would be over. What I didn't figure is that I'm a horse's ass, because the grocery store looked like the floor of the New York Stock exchange. The only way I could have been more cramped is if I was on a raft with refugees fleeing Cuba. At least the Super Bowl was enjoyable though and was heralded by many as the best ever. Apparently those people forgot about Super Bowl XLII where the New York Football Giants pulled the biggest upset in NFL history. Plus, people care about the Steelers and Cardinals about as much as they care about the 50 Cent / Rick Ross battle. Extras special kudos to Santonio Holmes for not once, but twice calling the NFL's coveted prize "The Dickey Lombardi trophy". He's in it for the love of the game man, not the money. Just like Dickey Lombardi was.

After 3 years of legal limbo, the Death Row Records catalog has finally been sold. New owner Lara Lavi tells the Wall Street Journal that she wants to rebuild the Death Row legacy, and notes that "(We need) to have a healing process with the Death Row artists, and that is probably one of my first priorities". Ah the healing, of course. Can't you just picture RBX, Daz Dillenger, and the D.O.C. in a big group hug? I'm sure that Lara's low priorities are releasing "Doggystyle - The Lost Tapes" or a remix of "Hail Mary" feat. Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Plies and Bow Wow. Surely, there's no money to be made there. But you can thank your lucky stars that we will finally get to hear those lost Petey Pablo and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes albums. Can the MC Hammer disc be far behind?

Masta Killa from the Wu-Tang Clan has been an outspoken vegetarian for years. Don't get me wrong - I'm cool with vegetarians and vegans. What I don't like is when people try to make me feel guilty about liking meat. Masta Killa lectures "We don't think that any creature should have to suffer or die for our dinner". If Masta Killa was so sensitive to the suffering of others, then how does he explain appearing on "The W" and "8 Diagrams"? Because trust me, I suffered plenty through those discs"...

Kevin Sakoda (KSPC-CA): "Hey y’all. In the spirit of “Change”…lemme just say this now…While I’d prefer that you simply don’t send me wack stuff just because it’s easy to attach a file and hit “send” I realize that sometimes wack artists have dope money to pay you to promote their wack music. It’s all Jesus…whatever. However, what I will tell you is that if I get another WACK + “Clean” version that ain’t actually “CLEAN”…there will be a certain amount of consequences and repercussions. Seriously…this is supposed to be your career…or at the very least it’s the career of the artist you’re representing. They can’t listen to their own joint closely one time to make sure that they don’t let something stupid slide by? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a professional user of curse-type words, but most college dj’s can’t play lyrics that would make your elders frown, let alone slap you…simple as that. If you’re not sure…edit it. Some stations are more strict than others…and why wouldn’t you try to get as much exposure as possible?

That said…if your shit is so legitimately dope that you don’t feel the need to create a clean edit…well then I’m a hiphop-lovin-clean-editing-m.f. Love is love. But if your shit is super-mediocre…don’t play around dude…edit that shit. If I think I’m spending more time editing your “clean” version than you did, I’mma go ahead and not listen to anything else you send me...unless you get super-dope super-fast.

And I’m not talking about anyone in particular…this is just a long time coming. If my show gets taken off the air because someone didn’t spend the 4 min listening to their own half-ass hiphop…it’d just be too late to get upset. I’ve been doing my show longer than most cats have been rapping…so I’m gonna exercise my right to be bitter old dude for a quick sec.

Alternately…just go ahead and admit up front that your shit is wack and it’ll save everyone involved a boatload of time"...
