What's Upper?

The "81st Academy Awards for 2009" is now history with:

"Best Actor":       Sean Penn "Milk"

"Best Actress": Kate Winslet in "The Reader"

"Best Picture": "Slumdog Millionaire!" I agree, GREAT movie...

This years' "Americas Best Dance Crew" on MTV continues to live up to it's hype. My pick this year will be Beat Freaks & Quest Crew a very close runner up!...

It's the END of talk radio here in Los Angeles as 97.1FM is now an "ALL HITS MUSIC" station, AMP RADIO!...

Fresh off their European tour, Capone-N-Noreaga are looking forward to promoting their March 17th album release, Channel 10. Their first single, "Rotate" featuring Ron Browz and Busta Rhymes has seen much success at radio and is now making it's video debut. Please find link to the video below. CNN will be in NY February 24-27th and are available for interviews. If you are interested in arranging an interview, please feel free to reach Erin Burke at Erinburke@smcrecordings.com or 917 689 4975

Arash's debut album, "Transcripted Thoughts" independently released through SoFull Entertainment, now has two #1 singles that has charted: "Howudoin?" and "Rise." The album is a cross of Marvin Gaye meets Mos Def and is reminiscent of the sound of the Golden Era of Hip-Hop. If you like quality music, then this album is for you.

On that note, for a limited time, Arash is posting the album on his dj website http://www.shammydee.com for free download. You need to register to become a member (if you haven't already, only takes 2 minutes) and you'll find the members link where you can download and enjoy the album...

Torae & Marco Polo Join The Roster:
Continuing to add to its growing roster of artists, Duck Down Records welcomes Torae & Marco Polo to the Duck Down Family. The MC/Producer team is prepping a new album entitled "Double Barrel," which will be entirely produced by Marco Polo and is set to be released this Spring.

Marco Polo has proven to be a dynamic producer in Hip Hop working with Kardinal Offishall, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Boot Camp Clik, Heltah Skeltah, Buckshot, Sadat X, and Large Professor. In the Spring of 2007, Marco Polo released his critically acclaimed album, "Port Authority". Now, less than two years later, he has teamed up with Torae to present "Double Barrel."

Marco Polo states he "was getting tired of Rappers not rapping anymore. Double Barrel sounds like some exciting shit you turn up LOUD and get amped to. Good fighting music, training music, driving music, killing music."

Torae, a Coney Island native, is one of the hardest working MCs in the game today. His last mixtape, "Daily Conversation" (released in 2008) featured production from DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Khrysis and of course Marco Polo, and received high accolades from the Hip Hop Community.

In speaking on his "Double Barrel album, Torae says that "Marco and I wanted to collaborate on a project, so we decided to record everything together in the studio and give each other feedback and constructive criticism to make the best possible LP. We felt there was definitely a lane open and a void for certain fans; fans like us that missed authentic boom bap, gritty, NYC rap. So that's what we set out to make."

Torae goes on to describe the album as "definitely not like anything that's come out of NY in the last few years. It's more inspired by the music that we liked to listen to coming up. Black Moon, Gangstarr, ONYX, Smif N Wessun, M.O.P., and artists like that. The beats hit hard and are really gritty. My delivery is more aggressive and in your face. It's a colder more abrasive album than what's out there right now. It's just what the heads are complaining isn't available."

On the decision to sign with Duck Down, Torae continues, "it's the perfect move because of the history of the label. They've put out a lot of the artists that inspired us to create music in the first place. They know how to reach our core fanbase and cater to the people that love the music and the culture we represent. It was a no brainer to drop "Double Barrel" on Duck Down."

Dru Ha, Co-Owner of Duck Down Records is "excited to secure the deal, as we tried to make a deal for Marco's Port Authority release but missed out. Marco has been consistently contributing quality production to many of Duck Downs recent releases so our core fans are familiar with his level of work. We are looking forward to a fully produced album from Marco showcasing Torae"...

If you’ve lived in LA for any length of time, you’ve bumped him in your ride on a Friday night. He’s worked at your favorite radio stations - Power 106 and 100.3 The Beat and any hot club from here to Japan. They’ve called him the “Hardest Working DJ on the West Coast,” but we just call him DJ Hideo (see photo above). If you’re on this site, then you’re wondering if the rumors are true. Unfortunately, they are. DJ Hideo has cancer. We are all in prayer for Hideo, his daughter Danny and the entire Sugano family. GUARDIAN ANGELS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS by: DJ 3rd Rail:

IT'S BEEN 30 YEARS  THAT CURTIS "ROCK" SLIWA (ANGEL ONE), ARNALDO "13" SALINAS AND THE REST OF THE MAGNIFICENT 13 SET OUT TO TAKE BACK THE #4 TRAIN AKA THE MUGGERS EXPRESS IN THE BOROUGH OF THE BRONX. AS MANY OF YOU KNOW THE EARLIER YEARS OF THE GROUP WERE THE HARDEST.

WE HAVE TO TAKE OUR BERETS OFF TO THEM. PEOPLE LIKE "TUT" "VALENTINE" "CAT" "RAMBO" "WING CHUNG" "BRIGHT EYE" " UNIQUE" THE FALLEN ANGELS AND THE LIST CAN GO ON FOR DAYS.

WHAT STARTED OUT AS A SMALL VOLUNTEER FORCE HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME.

MANY OF YOU LIKE MYSELF KEEP THE TORCH LIT AND KEEP PASSING IT ON. WHEN WE HAVE CHAPTERS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD LIKE JAPAN (KEIJI "DUKE" ODA YOUR THE MAN) (DIANNA THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THE GUARDIAN ANGELS). MEXICO (VAMPIRO IS HOLDING IT DOWN HARDCORE) PERU (WHAT CAN I SAY? YOU GUYS AND GIRLS ARE DOING A FANTASTIC JOB). EVERY OTHER CHAPTER OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.A. "THANK YOU"

THOSE OF YOU INSIDE THE U.S.A. "THANKS FOR DOING WHAT YOU DO"
BE PROUD TO KNOW ALL OF YOU ARE PART OF HISTORY. A HISTORY UNLIKE ANY OTHER. NO OTHER GROUP HAS DONE OR CAN DO WHAT THE GUARDIAN ANGELS HAVE AND STILL DO. IT IS WITH YOUR HELP AND DEDICATION THAT WE HAVE SURVIVED 30 YEARS. YOU KEEP THE WHEELS MOVING AND I CAN SEE THAT FROM THE PEOPLE I TALK TO. FROM THE VIDEOS I SEE FROM AROUND THE WORLD. FROM MY TRIPS AROUND THE WORLD. FROM THE EMAILS SOME OF YOU SEND. ALSO FROM TALKING TO CURTIS (ANGEL ONE). FROM SPEAKING TO THE LEGEND "ARNALDO 13 SALINAS". ALL THESE THINGS MAKE ME FEEL PROUD TO BE A GUARDIAN ANGEL. AN ANGEL THAT WAS RECRUITED BY CURTIS "ROCK" SLIWA HIMSELF IN 1988 ON A SUBWAY IN CHICAGO. I HAVE HAD A WONDERFUL 20 YEARS AS AN ANGEL AND COULDN'T ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE.

SO AS WE DO IN CHICAGO EVERY FEB 13TH, WELL JUST ABOUT EVERY NIGHT ALSO. WE ARE GONNA GO OUT AND PATROL. MAYBE GO OVER THE HISTORY WITH SOME OF THE GUYS HERE. FIRST I HAVE TO GO TO MILWAUKEE AND PATROL AND RECRUIT WITH THEM. I WILL GO OVER THE HISTORY WITH THEM ALSO.

TO ALL MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS BE SAFE AND CONTINUE THE TRADITION. FOR SOME OF YOU IT MIGHT BE TOUGH, BUT TRUST ME I KNOW ABOUT TOUGH AND HARD TIMES.

I AM SENDING THE FAMOUS GUARDIAN ANGELS YOUTUBE LINK: http://www.youtube.com/user/3RDRAIL1988

TAKE CARE AND I HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE FOR THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE AND PUERTO RICAN DAY PARADE IN NEW YORK CITY THE WEEKEND OF JUNE THE 11TH (THURSDAY)- 14 (SUNDAY NIGHT AFTER THE PARADE). WE WILL KEEP YOU POSTED ON THE FINAL DETAILS. I WANT EVERY CHAPTER TO MAKE AN HONEST EFFORT TO ATTEND. DON'T WAIT TILL THE END OF MAY TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. BRING DOWN PEOPLE WHO ARE GONNA HELP YOUR CHAPTER. THIS IS NOT A VACATION. IF WE WANT TO BE AROUND FOR ANOTHER 30 YEARS WE HAVE TO PLANT FOUNDATIONS ALL OVER...

A MESSAGE FROM DIDDY TO THE DJ
SEAN COMBS has blamed a current lack of creativity in the global DJ scene for stifling Hip-Hop music. The rap mogul is adamant that the genre is in the midst of a "recession" because there are so few talented beatmakers around to help create interesting tracks.

He tells MTV.com, "People have figured out the formula when they make records for radio, and DJs ain't DJs no more. DJs don't break records no more. DJs don't play album cuts. DJs play what is going to move the crowd. DJs, they don't expose you to the newness. That was the DJs' thing. Hip-Hop is in a recession also."

But Combs is convinced that there is enough fresh, young talent in the music industry at the moment to make sure that rap artists will continue to sell records.

He adds, "(Hip-Hop) is not dead, it's definitely way better than where it was at, as far as with 'Ye, T.I. and with Jeezy. It's so much great stuff out there, the responsibility has to come with the DJs"...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Nesto (WODU-VA): "Ok, this weather is starting to mess with my emotions.. Mother nature pulled a fast one on us last week. Temps were in the low 60's and this morning I wake up to sleet, and snow. WOW.

Ok, so as Edgie said, Mr. Phelps is loving that A-Rod is all up in the news right now. I can't believe that sheriff down in S.Carolina was actually thinking about pressing charges against Phelps. Not that I'm saying doing drugs is acceptable, but if Mr. Phelps was any regular college kid this whole damn thing would have never make the news.

And Chris Brown is really going to have to do some major damage control. I don't agree with any dude that hits a woman. There is only one time I see that physical force may be used and that is if you are defending yourself against a beat down from a crazy woman. However, Mr. Brown sounds like he got a little carried away and put the beatdown on Rhianna. That's not cool at all. Protecting yourself is one thing, but chocking her out, bite marks, black eye... bro if that is true you were dead wrong..

By the way, what are peoples thoughts on this stimulus package? I feel this is a double edged sword. I believe something is needed, but not sure this amount is needed. And what I really don't like is this "bailout" seems to be helping people out that lived way over there limits and bought houses they knew they couldn't afford. What about the people that stayed within their limits and bought houses they could afford and kept paying their bills? Do they get any assistance?

And these damn automobile companies are back again asking for even more money. Maybe they need to fold. Obviously, they are working with a busted business plan or they wouldn't be in this position. And why do they have to have so many different models. Another reason they are in this position. If they fold, maybe they will re-built and come up with a better plan and less models, and better, efficient cars"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): " Short and sweet this week as I'm busier than the Octuplet Mom at feeding time. But here are some things that made me nauseous this week:
1. Snoop Dogg "Walk The Line (Remix)" feat. Johnny Cash
First off, someone is not "featured" on your record just because you sample their record. In fact, I'm pretty sure if Johnny Cash was alive, he would have taken his guitar and smashed it over his own head before he agreed to be on a song this ridiculous.

2. A-Rod's apology
Oh yeah, A-Rod was young and stupid. That explains it! He wishes he had the benefit of a college education. Funny thing A-Rod, is that I learned right from wrong from my Mom & Dad at five years old, like 99% of all normal people.

3. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony to record with K-Fed
Wait, I always hated Bone, so anything this embarrassing will only help demolish their career. Sweet.

4. New MC Hammer reality show on A&E
Even sweeter! Let's reward Hammer with more fame after he pissed through $33 million. What a great role model. Maybe on the show he will get some stimulus money.

5. Kanye West claims to have made "the best beat ever" for Jay-Z's "Blueprint 3".
And here I thought Kanye forgot how to make a Hip-Hop record. Let me hazard a wild guess: does the best beat ever contain autotune? Hmmm...well at least Jay-Z is still on top of his game (yawn).

6. Lil Wayne cracks 3 million in sales for "Tha Carter III"
I guess Universal Records must have had some gift cards left over from Christmas that they had to spend"...

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver): "Began things with a double shot from the Zion I crew's 5th album "The Takeover". This talented MC/producer duo, Zumbi and AmpLive, has been coming with it for over a decade now, and this album continues in that tradition of quality forward thinking beats and rhymes. Although representing Oakland, Zion I decided to evoke the talent and sound of some other talented MCs on "The Takeover" such as Devin The Dude (Houston), Ty (UK), and Brother Ali (Minneapolis). Definitely check out "The Takeover" on Gold Dust Media and for more insight peep a couple shows back when we had Zumbi join us -
http://urpradio.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2009-01-14T15_37_25-08_00.
www.myspace.com/zioni

We also had Cesar Comanche, the veteran MC and co-founder of the Justus League join us on the phone. He just dropped his 6th album
entitled "Die In Your Lap" the corresponding track is fire and produced by Lord Quest out of T-Dot with other production credits on the album belonging to 9th Wonder, Khrysis and Cesar Comanche himself. We have also been banging the lead single "Hands Up" for sometime now too – definitely Top 2009 material. However, we didn't limit our conversation to just the music as we touched on the beginnings of the Justus League (first meeting fellow co-founder 9th Wonder) and the uniqueness of the North Carolina scene in general. All this makes it an interview worth peeping.

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "It's DJ Chill Will of the University of Michigan's WCBN 88.3 FM. Home of the longest running college radio Hip Hop show in the Mid-West and maybe the country. Be sure to tune into the show weekly on 88.3 FM. In the Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit area. Or at www.wcbn.org Saturday nights from 9 to 12 midnight est. Had a great weekend with DJ Sol Percussion and DJ ELL rocking the airwaves with me at the station. DJ ELL the 15 year old phenom came thru and had the phones buzzing. Kid is a violinist and a DJ look out for him in the years to come. Not to be out done DJ Sol Percussion blessed us with some exclusive Marvin Gaye and JDilla tracks that I had never heard. Not to mention a track about not dating a DJ. You will hear it on my myspace so stay tune. Look out for some hot interviews the weekend and some classic throwbacks. For More information about me DJ Chill Will go to www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "Normally I'd have something mildly funny to say hear. Unfortunately though this week I'm a little pressed for time as I'm in extreme training. Training that will allow me to be the 3rd person in the last 12 months to knock out Suge Knight. My training should take about a week of preparation. Boy how the mighty have fallen. It seems at this point, a semi-strong gust of wind would knock this "gangsta icon" over. And, as my man Jason D said to me, "Who are the people that invite this guy to parties"? I mean seriously, Is Suge even in the entertainment industry at this point?"...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "Not too much to talk about this week. Oh yeah it is good to be in love, there now I said it. Moving on with the rest of this month. Why are mad people trying to sell me soul food platters? Enough already. I like the new Wu song. I was driving home from work listening to it saying thank you, someone still knows how to make good Hip-Hop music. Until Randy Orton kicks Linda McMahon in the head I'm out"...
