[[  March 30, 2009  ]]

What's Upper?

Rapper T.I. was sentenced to one year and a day in prison as part of his guilty plea on federal weapons charges dating back to his arrest in October 2007. TIP arrived at an Atlanta courthouse just after 9 last Friday morning, followed by his girlfriend Tameka "Tiny" Cottle and members of his Grand Hustle team. The ATL superstar and his legal team worked out a plea deal that had TIP performing thousands of hours of community service, some of which was documented on his MTV show "Road To Redemption." TI is expected to begin his sentence within the next 6-8 weeks...

LET'S GET LIVE WITH KID SENSATION!

For those that don't know my musical history, before I recorded music as Xola www.myspace.com/xolamusic, I started out as a teenager with Sir-Mix-A-Lot under the alias "Kid Sensation." Alongside Anthony (Sir-Mix-A-Lot), I was one of the MC's that helped Seattle get on the Hip-Hop map. Along the way, I had ups, downs, a million units sold (over 4 cd’s), the label (Nastymix) folded, but I believe everything happens for a reason. My prior CD's were considered by many to be classics, but were out of print and unavailable... I had no clue what to do being young and not so business savvy.

Now through a deal with Burnside Recordings, I've been able to compile my past CD's, and bring new music projects to the table. The prior CD's will be available coming soon.

New Kid Sensation release NOW AVAILABLE "Back Home" featuring two Ken Griffey Jr. tracks, the 20th anniversary edition of my almost gold debut single "Back to Boom", the street burner INFERNO, and 12 other heaters.. The site www.kidsensation.com is up but still a work in progress... I've removed all objectionable language/material from prior Kid Sensation CD's, for remaster, and re release. This has been a huge breakthrough for me! After all I've been dragged through, cheated out of, and deceived on, my fractured past is beginning to fall into place.

As most everyone knows, Griffey's back with the Mariners! His return created huge buzz in the media. On radio it caused a resurgence of a nostalgic rap duet piece I conned- ahem... I mean humbly requested my good buddy Ken to record with me entitled "The Way I Swing".... If you never got a chance to hear the original you can hear it at:

http://www.imeem.com/people/s23b9M/music/hke1ntx7/kid-sensation-the-way-i-swing-ken-griffey-jr/

Yes, that's actually Ken and I flowin, he was maybe 23 (he's got me by a couple) you can tell how young we sound :) see the attached promo picture...

KUBE93FM recently honored me with a request to record a track welcoming him back home. It features myself and Ken (sound drops and rhymes from the original release). Jump onto the link below, to hear snippets of both Griffey tracks.

KUBE has given this song a nice number of spins, but please spread the word, have everyone you know call (206.421.9393) email (karenwild@kube93.com) or text (97373) the station and request the track if you want to hear it. As opening day gets closer, the story and song will build, the Seattle Times interviewed me, Fox Sports Network plans a feature, and I'll be on KUBE to promote... With your support, it will continue to bubble!

On to the present and future: Those who know me well know- God is my source, and my heart is in serving my community, especially the kids. Aside from my own kids, I have a heart for every young person in the world. I simply believe in their potential, and I dedicate my life/career to do my part in setting an example, and serving them first. Through The Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, and many other sources, I strive to give them all a piece of me. I want my days on this earth to be remembered for what I gave and who I served, as well as my music. My career is what I do, but not who I am.

I'm also part owner of an energy drink company Hench Hench (www.henchhench.com) check us out, drink with both hands, and FEEL THE HENCH! (strength). We will be doing some revolutionary things with the drink and music company, stay tuned...

The Xola Project "My Heart, My Soul, My Music" is coming soon. It’s my first release as Xola rather than Kid Sensation and it will reflect all of the above mentioned... The world will get a look into my life; I took the road of transparency hoping something I've survived might draw a connection with one many. My journey through this thing called life has had every imaginable twist and turn... God gave me a gift to put it together in a compelling fashion (I hope others agree). Summer 2009 on Hench Hench Music.

Anyhow, those who support, download the Kid album, it’s 9 bucks, a good listen, and please pass it on to everybody. You can preview snippets and buy it at this link...

Cypress Hill is back in the studio wrapping up its first new album since 2004, with hopes to release it in the fall on Suburban Noize Records. "We're mixing right now," says B-Real, who just released his first solo album, "Smoke N Mirrors.". He describes the group's new music as "gritty. It's aggressive. It's like Hip-Hop straight-up. We just felt like we needed to go back to that raw, gritty Hip-Hop sound but try to find a way to bridge it with what's going on now."  B-Real says the as-yet-untitled album will have input from pals Everlast, Evidence and The Alchemist, but he didn't anticipate many other guests. "We don't really do a lot of collaborations in Cypress. We keep it in house."  The group members have been mostly working on their own projects since 2004's "Til Death Do Us Part" and a split with Columbia Records, their longtime label home...

Arash's debut album, "Transcripted Thoughts" independently released through SoFull Entertainment, now has two #1 singles that has charted: "Howudoin?" and "Rise." The album is a cross of Marvin Gaye meets Mos Def and is reminiscent of the sound of the Golden Era of Hip-Hop. If you like quality music, then this album is for you.

On that note, for a limited time, Arash is posting the album on his dj website http://www.shammydee.com for free download. You need to register to become a member (if you haven't already, only takes 2 minutes) and you'll find the members link where you can download and enjoy the album...

If you’ve lived in LA for any length of time, you’ve bumped him in your ride on a Friday night. He’s worked at your favorite radio stations - Power 106 and 100.3 The Beat and any hot club from here to Japan. They’ve called him the “Hardest Working DJ on the West Coast,” but we just call him DJ Hideo (see photo below). If you’re on this site, then you’re wondering if the rumors are true. Unfortunately, they are. DJ Hideo has cancer. We are all in prayer for Hideo, his daughter Danny and the entire Sugano family. Please log onto his site for more info on how you can help Hideo: http://www.prayforhideo.com/ and this website is intended to keep people alerted about Hideo's progress. Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Mel Boogie (CKLN-Canada): "We know it’s been a few weeks since our last newsletter and here’s the scoop – as some of you may already know, the infrastructure at CKLN 88.1FM has been in turmoil for the past 18 months, with some serious infighting between two groups of board members. The infighting escalated to the point where the Student Union at Ryerson University (home of CKLN 88.1FM), has the station on ‘LOCK OUT. Simply put, ALL programmers have been locked out of the station, and no new programming is airing until the situation is resolved.

Originally it was hoped that things would be worked out within a few weeks, but a month later, things are still in poor shape – it’s truly unfortunate that it’s the community and volunteer programmers (some of whom have been at the station for over 20 years), are the ones who have to shoulder most of this burden. THANK YOU for all your emails and calls to find out what happened, and show your support of our show and the station itself!!!

What does this mean for DD RADIO?? Well, you know we’re soldiers!! Our home is at CKLN, but while we wait patiently for things to work out, one of our sister stations has given us a temporary home. We still plan to bring you the exclusive interviews, music and straight heat that make DD RADIO the jewel that it is via our podomatic page! In the meantime, we're still on the heavy grind - no doubt!! Over the past month, we've done a guest spot on OTA Live, been on panels for International Women's Day, rocked the mic at the Hip Hop Karaoke 2nd Anniversary Party (well, Mel gave it her best try and gained a whole new respect for MCs!!), and of course you can still check us out LIVE at various hot spots throughout the city, including Girls Love Hip Hop Too (it's a birthday party for JJ ROCK this Saturday alongside The Real Freqs & Special Guest Agile!) and the Big Daddy Kane concert – peep the flyers below to see where we’ll be!! Having Monday nights off has also allowed us to catch Canada's HOTTEST New Television drama, The LINE, which premiered this month on The Movie Network (Canada's HBO), starring Wes "Maestro" Williams, Cle Bennet, Linda Hamilton, Sharon Lawrence and Ed Asner -- peep the trailer HERE !!

It's that time of year -- VOTING for the Annual Canadian DJ Awards is now open. It was an honor it was for MelBoogie to take home Female DJ of the Year 2008, but this year we're setting our sights a bit higher and would like your nomination for College Radio Show of the Year!!"...

Jason-D (RadioBoise.org): "I don't know about the rest of my DJ's but I have been struggling to keep up on new music. . Recent albums to check for Saigon & Statik Selektah "All In A Day's Work", Rise & The Avid Record Collector present "Rise", B-Real "Smoke & Mirrors", Tone Spliff "Authentic", Keeley & Zaire "Ridin High", & MF Doom "Born Like This". There is a lot of good underground music out right now"...

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "It's DJ Chill Will of the University of Michigans's WCBN 88.3 FM. Home of the longest running Hip Hop show on radio in the Mid-West and maybe the country. Be sure to tune into the show weekly on 88.3 FM. In the Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit area or at www.wcbn.org Saturday from 9pm to 12 midnight est.

Gotta send a big shout out to everybody at SXSW, and WMC . Wish I could be at both but gotta do my thing here. Speaking of music there's been a lot of dope stuff coming out. And Flo Rida yeah I said it FLO RIDA!!!!! Has a song called Yayo with some of Miami's dopest mc's. Check for that and Curtains new joint called Dope Supremacy which is fire also. Curtains has a video for the song that is dope. For more information about me DJ Chill Will go to www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

Nesto (WODU-VA): "What's up people? I'm stuck on one, because I can't get to two... DJ Exile.. Check it out when you get a chance, and check out that Keelay and Zaire. How did SXSW go? Sounds like it was good times. Hopefully next year I will be able to make it. Speaking of SXSW I know there was some goodies and I just got my hands on a mixtape, and it just so happens to have a RMX of the Heltah Skeltah "Midnight Madness" track mixed by my homie J Clyde. Check it out, it's dope"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "Although I'm sensitive to the tragic events surrounding her death, am I the only one who had never heard of Natasha Richardson?

I wish the Government would buy up my "toxic debt". I'd settle for them buying up my "slightly nauseating debt", like my $157 monthly Comcast bill for internet, cable with HBO, and DVR. Writing that check will make you queasy each month.
Kid Cudi un-retiring? Wow, what a shocker!!! I can't believe that he made the courageous decision to stop pouting like a baby and continue on the path to fame and fortune. Good for you Kid Cudi. You have the heart of a lion.

Although I'm impressed with Asher Roth's humorous delivery and lyrical dexterity, I haven't heard a record from him yet that has a hook. I wonder if that will be his achille's heel.

Each day my colleague insists on recapping the previous night's March Madness games for me, even though I've made it blatantly clear that I am not a huge basketball fan and can barely follow the NBA let alone 64 different colleges. If I wanted to watch a bunch of kids pursue a career that is almost assuredly a dead end, then I'd watch "American Idol". I'm really ready for some Major League Baseball. At least those guys know that you have to cheat to make it a career"...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "This is a good cause I am a part of so I thought I would let you know about it. I am involved in an annual golf outing with my brother and father's fraternity(Kappa Alpha Psi), that takes place every June in Mainland,Pennsylvania. The outing is to raise money for the Community Advocates Association for Children&Youth. The organization also known as CAACY helps counsel troubled youth and their families and their is also a scholarship fund for the Kappa Alpha Psi's Delta Theta Alumni chapter. The brochure is in the attachment. All who are interested can contact the Golf Committee list and send all registration to address listed. So please join us on Monday June 15,2009 for a great cause"...
