On June 20th, 2009, members of DKLA & The Zu
Crew is teaming up with Area Food Banks to collect
food and donations for those in need during the economic
downturn at Hancock Park in Los Angeles.
The Zu Crew is a community of individuals ranging from
artists, musicians and industry professionals united for
a common purpose, which is the overall improvement of
society. Created in 2005, this group’s aim is promote
unity, originality, as well as ensuring that these
ideals will be articulated
through future generations to come.
The
economic downturn our nation is facing is a diverse
collection of many communities. Many people have lost
their jobs and homes. In California, the unemployment
rate has jumped 10.5 percent its highest in 26 years,
and its continues to climb. With unemployment come
people losing their homes. There are 3.5 million people
in the United States that will experience homelessness
in a year. Out of that 3.5 million 1.35 million are
children. In Los Angeles alone 80,000 people are
homeless out of the 3.5 million in the nation.
The Zu Crew Food Bailout will consist of live music,
food, and activities. We are contacting local vendors
and possible corporate sponsors to participate. This
drive will provide sponsors with an opportunity to
connect face to face with consumers and market new
products as well as gain exposure from various media
outlets such as local news broadcast and blog pages.
Many companies have offered to accept resumes, help
people with resumes, and interview on the spot to fill
current job openings. The food drive will provide aid
not only to those families requiring assisted due to
layoffs but also to those who are homeless. We
anticipate that 25 to 35 percent of food collected will
be set aside for the homeless here in downtown Los
Angeles. For more info log onto:

THE 2009 DMC AMERICAN BATTLEGROUND
DMC DJ Battles are the World's most longest
running and most prestigious DJ Battles. This year, DJs
took charge of their local battle scenes to bring DMC
battles to both San Antonio TX and New Orleans LA for
the first time ever, as well as to tried and true DJ
battle cities: New York City and Los Angeles. DJs from
across the USA will enter battles in these select cities
with the hope of representing the United States in the
2009 DMC World DJ Championships in London on Sept. 11th
and 12th.
In the traditional DMC DJ battle, which began in 1985,
DJs showcase two and six minute routines on 2 Technics
turntables and 1 mixer for the judges. The first US DJ
to win this battle was DJ Cheese from Plainfield
NJ who incorporated scratching into his routine, taking
the 1986 DMC World title and forever changing what was
more of a mixing competition to a Hip Hop DJ battle.
Since that time Americans including DJ Cash Money,
Roc Raida, Craze, ie.MERG, Qbert,
Mix Master Mike and Apollo have claimed
the World title. This year, DJs will enter the regional
battles in TX, NY, CA and LA to gain a place in the 2009
DMC USA Finals being held at NYC's hot spot Santos Party
House (96 Lafayette St) on August 1st.
Two additional DMC battles were created more recently to
meet the battle DJs demand for variety. The DMC Team DJ
Battle, debuted in 1999, and consists of crews of two to
four DJs battling showcase style for six minutes each on
as many as 6 Technics turntables and 4 mixers. Since
2008, DJ teams have been permitted to use computer
programs such as Serato Scratch Live. The Team
battle will be held in Los Angeles at The Sabor Lounge
(847 S. Union Ave.) on June 27th along with the DMC West
Coast Regional Battle.
The DMC Battle for Supremacy, a classic head to head
style DJ battle, established in 2000, pairs competitors
up and squares them off for two 90 second rounds on 2
Technics turntables and 1 mixer. This battle will be
held in New York City at Santos Party House (96
Lafayette St) on June 13th along with the DMC East Coast
Regional Battle.
PRIZES:
1st: The 2009 US Team, US Battle for Supremacy
and regional champions will receive the recently
released
Rane
SL 3 as well as prizes from our other
sponsors.
2nd: Runners up in the Supremacy and regional battles
will win UDG/Rane Creator Backpacks.
3rd: Regional DJs who place 3rd will receive UDG/Rane
Messenger Bags.
On Aug. 1: The 2009 DMC US Champion will take home the
Rane
TTM 57SL mixer. Runner up receives the
Rane

CALL
TO ACTION: Help Save Black Radio:
The Honorable John Conyers, our 80 year old
African-American Congressman is the sponsor of a new
bill that could put many black owned radio stations out
of business. And force others to abandon their
commitment to provide free music, entertainment, news,
information, and money losing formats like gospel and
black talk.
This is Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio
One with an urgent call to our Radio Family.
The John Conyers Performance Tax Bill is the brain child
of the foreign owned record industry who would receive
at least 50% of the revenue that would be charged to
radio stations in order for them to play music. The
music that you now receive free from us - we would have
to pay millions of dollars for.
And in the midst of this economic depression, black
radio stations simply do not have that financial
ability.
There has been only one hearing on the bill and that
hearing did not have any black ownership representation.
Black radio owners and community leaders including Rev.
Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Tom
Joyner, and myself have all begged Conyers to at least
allow us the opportunity for a hearing. He has flatly
refused.
We now ask you, our radio family, to assist us in
saving the future of black radio. Please call or email
or visit the offices of John Conyers today.
His phone numbers are 202-225-5126 and
313-961-5670 and his email address isjohn.conyers@mail.house.gov
TELL HIM that you oppose this bill that would
murder Black owned radio and the free music that you now
hear on all free radio stations. In the midst of an
American economic recession, it is not the right time to
send millions of dollars to foreign owned record
companies that don’t even pay taxes like you and me in
this country. This bill is not in the interest of Black
people! Please help us save Black radio!
WANT TO LEARN MORE? See below why it is IMPERATIVE that
we act to save Black radio:
1.
The promotional value of free local radio airplay
translates into significant revenues for artists and
record labels:
·
According to the Recording Industry Association of
America (RIAA), record sales in the United States in
2007 were approximately $10.4 billion;
·
Touring revenue in 2007 in the U.S. was approximately $5
billion;
·
The
above figures exclude the several billion dollars
derived annually from merchandise, songwriting royalties
and licensing deals for commercials, films, etc.; and
·
Also
excluded is the boost that U.S. popularity provides for
foreign sales and concerts.
2.
Local radio also actively promotes artists by:
·
Devoting considerable and valuable airtime to promoting
artists’ concerts;
·
Featuring artist weekends
·
Providing opportunities for live in-studio performances;
and
·
Creating buzz through on-air ticket and album giveaways,
helping to drive concert and merchandising revenue.
Without doubt, the engine driving these billions of
dollars into the pockets of the record labels and
artists is free, local radio promotion.
Artist Examples of Increased Sales From Local Radio
Airplay
Each of the next graphs details and compares the spins
on over-the-air radio (highlighted in red on each graph)
with the retail sales and downloads of the artists’
releases (highlighted in blue on each graph). The
results are consistent in every artist example:
Significant play on radio results in significant sales
of the artist’s song, demonstrating the significant
promotional and economic impact that free, local radio
provides to the recording industry.
The recording industry suggests that the Internet and
viral marketing is now the way to break a new artist.
However, despite numerous new methods for artists to
showcase their music, such as MySpace.com, retail
outlets, etc., radio’s promotional value in spiking and
sustaining sales is clearly demonstrated by the
information included below.

LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED A LIFE…. THE REALEST SH#T
I'VE EVER SEEN by: Vader (WonderTwinZ)
HERE
ARE THE STATS:
-
98,668 people nationwide waiting for organ
transplants right now.
- 28,352 transplants performed last year.
- 14,393 donors last year.
- 6,411 people died waiting for an organ
transplant last year.
- 17 people die each day waiting for a
transplant.
- 1 person is added to the waiting list every 12
minutes.
If
you could save someone’s life, would you? My brother is
a well-known HipHop DJ who has built-up his name through
hard work, a dedicated hustle, and his sharing nature.
My brother has a work ethic like none I’ve ever seen.
He’s the type of guy to set his mind on something and
truly complete it. He decided one day he wanted to start
getting healthy and become a runner. Now, 9 years later,
he’s up every morning and completes 10 miles on the
treadmill before 9am. His drive and determination has
always amazed me. Since he was a little kid, he was
always the type to split his food and offer you half.
Collectively my brother and I have been working hard to
help other musicians in need. Almost 10 years ago, my
brother developed The Original HipHop Yellow Pages (The
Connex List). This magazine shares contact
information of individuals that can help out the careers
of independent HipHop artists. Sharing info and helping
others seemed like common sense to my brother. People
have never stopped thanking him for his help and he’s
never stopped offering.
My brother aka DJ Sonic, and myself are known as
The Wonder TwinZ. We’ve both achieved some
amazing goals and accomplishments in our lives. We are
the tour DJs for HipHop Icons, Naughty By Nature
and have traveled around the globe to DJ in dozens of
foreign countries. We are celebrating our 8th year as
the hosts and DJs of our own morning show on SiriusXM
Satellite Radio. Our magazine, The Connex List, is in
its 10th year and still going strong. We’ve created an
empire for mass communications through our email system
(you probably have an email from us in your inbox right
now).
While we are extremely proud of all of these
accomplishments, none of them even compare to the heroic
accomplishment my brother has achieved this past week.
DJ Sonic is a true hero in my eyes and a true-life saver
in Will’s eyes.
Ya’ see… Will is one of our greatest friends from
childhood. We all grew up together with dreams of
becoming successful in the HipHop world. As the years
went on and we got older, Will developed diabetes and
eventually his kidney’s failed and he was added to the
7-year waiting list of patients in need of a transplant.
Will has been going to kidney dialysis treatment for a
while, which required him to go to the doctor 4 days a
week and hook up to a kidney dialysis machine for 6
hours each time. Throughout all of this, Will maintained
his good spirits and managed to suppress the thoughts of
him losing a battle to kidney disease, the same battle
that has taken the lives of almost 7,000 people last
year alone.
Once my brother realized that his homie’s life was in
jeopardy and without a kidney transplant Will might not
live long enough for this 7-year waiting list, he
immediately called the doctor and setup an appointment
to see if there was any way he could help Will out.
After one simple blood test, the doctor told my brother
that he was a match for Will’s blood type. The next
thing ya know, the two of them are taking care of all
the proper insurance paperwork and setting a date for
the actual surgery.
While this news was obviously good news, it still scared
our mother to think of her son going into a serious
surgery. There is always a chance of some infection that
could complicate the surgery or even claim the lives of
both my brother and my man Will. Needless to say, we
were all worried.
5am Tuesday morning we were at the hospital ready to see
a miracle. The doctors were going to perform two
surgeries back-to-back and transplant my brother’s
healthy kidney into Will’s body. 6 hours later, the
operations were done. The doctors said everything worked
out perfect and both my brother and Will spent the week
recovering at Stony Brook University Hospital.
My brother came home today and has been takin’ it easy,
as are the doctor’s orders. He’s a hustler by nature so
he’s back on his blackberry handling some light
business. Will’s health is getting better everyday and
the doctors say that will continue. At this time last
year, Will received some of the worst news of his life.
Now one year later, He’s back!!… and better than before.
My brother saved Will’s life and for that he is a true
hero. And I’m proud to be his brother...

Will (WCBN-MI):
What's up people? After a few great weeks of clubs and
shows in hip hop. We had the tragic death of Dolla.
Who I had the pleasure of meeting at the Bumsquaddjz
reunion in LA. Dolla was cool and we'd hit each
other up when he came to the area. Long story short, we
have to stop the nonsense that's associated with the
music and the culture. For the most part no other music
has this type of stuff associated with it, and it's sad.
Big shout to all the mixers who put it down this past
weekend doing holiday mixes. What Up Doe to all the
callers and text-sters who hit me up during the show
this past weekend. A lot of new joints this week, and if
your not feeling the Blahzay record or Red &
Meth's Blackout 2. Maybe Dr.Phil can help
cause there FIRE!!!! For more information about me DJ

(805HipHop.com):
"How was your weekend? Mine was crazy! Went to Fat
Beats in LA and bossed up with legendary Rhyme
Artist PERCEE P, and had a chance to meet
K-SOLO (You have to remember this cat right?). That
was nutty! NEMO of IMAKEMAD BEATS was
there from NY with ROC C for their in-store
performance for the new album that just dropped!.
New
music added by ROC C from his new album
“Transcontinental” on E1 Distribution “What You
Drinkin” feat POK and Wildchild. This is a
dope track produced by NEMO for IMAKEMADBEATS. This
album just dropped May 19th and is a banging
album to listen to. Get at me If your aren’t knowing
about it yet! Also a new Track by OPIUM BLACK out
of CT with his new track called “Success” feat. LIL
Wayne and DRAKE. This tracjk comes with a
hard slap and dope lyrics. Be on the lookout for OPIUM
BLACK for sure. His buzz is increasing all over the US
and especially in the mid west. Thanks for supporting
these artiosts and reach out to me if there is anything
we can do to help you out!!
Good
news just isn’t that good without a little bit of bad
news right?? Well, I am sad to announce that our show
with De La Soul on 6/19 has been cancelled. It
appears that De la broke a radius clause in the Club
Contract which stated they wouldn’t play a big show
close to the club, and they did a big show for UCLA’s
Festival over Memorial Day Weekend. (It’s a REAL BIG
SHOW TOO) Well because of that the Club postponed the De
la Soul show until a later date. That sucks, but I feel
them! Nothing worse than sinking a lot of $$ into a show
to have a show go down right before yours and lose out
bad!! So no De la Soul sshow now. Huge thanks go out to
the supports who were gonna go and to the artists who
were going to be opening the show as well!"...
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA):
"A lot of people were
surprised that Terminator Salvation came in second this
weekend. Not me. Obviously Night At The Museum 2 was
gonna be a monster since it's a kids movie. But you also
have to take into account that Christian Bale
really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way when he went
psycho last year on set. Despite what a close friend of
mine urged me to do and give him a chance, I have to say
No. Or as Mr. Bale put it last year on set, NO! NO! NO!
Really bad break for Iron Mike Tyson. Felt sorry
for the guy. Regardless of all the nonsense he's been
involved with over the years, no one should ever have to
go through what he's going through right now.
Now last week I mentioned that a certian northeast
promoter needed to keep his inbox cleaned out so my shit
wouldn't keep bouncing back. My plea's fell on def ears
because once again this week, that inbox is full. Can
someone help Adam get a real email account that
can handle a high volume of messages.
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
OJ filed an appeal in Nevada because he feels the
jury was racially inadequate. In other words, he wanted
the same idiots who let him off for murder 15 years ago.
Why are there so many overhyped & subpar albums coming
out? Eminem's album had 2 songs at best that
aren't trash and Busta Rhymes album is really
weak. I hope something good this way comes. And soon
please!
Something tells me that Doomsday is not dead yet
on Smallville. Now I just gotta wait until the next
season to know for sure. Okay that's it for this
week"...
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH):
Worst
Album That I've Bought Recently:
Eminem "Relapse" - Like any other Hip-Hop fan, I
was excited for the first new Eminem record in
five years. As tracks started to leak from "Relapse", I
started to get more and more concerned. When I got the
LP this past week, my fears were confirmed. Eminem has
officially become the mainstream Necro. The album
is an uncomfortable listen. It is so vulgar and violent
that you can't enjoy the stellar backdrop that Dr.
Dre provided. The album should have been more like
the one poignant cut "Beautiful" and less sexual
hack-and-slash. What a waste.
Honorable Mention:
Stoupe The Enemy of Mankind "Decalogue" - OK, I'm
willing to pay the full blown LP price for this scant 10
song EP disc but how about some really hot beats in
exchange? Most of the tracks sound like throwaways from
the "History Of Violence" LP, and that's not saying
much. Only Saigon and Lorrie Doriza have
memorable canvases to paint on.
Best Album That I've Bought Recently:
Endemic "Terminal Illness" - I had never heard of
this U.K. beatsmith, but I can tell you that this album
is chock full of hot beats and hungry lyricists. At the
"perfect size" of 13 songs, the album boats guest stars
like Killah Priest, Planet Asia and
Sean Price. There are many great underground
collabos with U.S. and U.K. artists and this is one of
the first albums in a long time where I haven't skipped
any tracks.
Honorable Mention:
Rise & The Avid Record Collector "Risen" - Just a
raw Hip-Hop LP, front to back. I was checking for
Rise ever since his scene stealing verse on Eddie
Ill & D.L.'s 1998 track "Nothing Changed"
where he quipped "I rap 24-7, my bed, never slept in"
and "I'm so great that text books portray me as a white
man". He's equally polished on this LP and reinforced by
super funky beats by The Avid Record Collector
who despite looking like a child molester on the cover,
is probably the next big thing behind the boards"...

Happy
Birthday this week to Ohio's DJ D. Lorand Jackson
celebrating Monday, June 1st & to my dog & best
friends, Mogwai, celebrating this Tuesday, June
2nd!... Our prayers go out to boxing legend Mike
Tyson and his family as they bury their four year
old princess Exodus who died last week following
a freak accident at her Arizona home. If one thing can
come from this tragic story, it's to love and appreciate
your children and live every day to the fullest...
