[[  June 8, 2009  ]]

What's Upper?

Last week we lost two martial artist icons. Kung fu movie legend David Carradine, who recently revamped his career in Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill' movies, has died at the age of 72. Carradine was found dead in his hotel room in Bangkok, where he was set to shoot a new movie titled 'Stretch.' The Nation newspaper, citing Thai police sources, is reporting that Carradine was found hanged in his hotel closet and that it may have been a suicide. The rep said David's death was "accidental." The BBC is now reporting that David's body was found hanging with a rope around his neck and "other parts of his body." And in Hong Kong movie legend Shih Kien, who spent decades playing the enemy in dozens of martial arts films including the Bruce Lee classic 'Enter the Dragon,' as Mr. Han has died at age 96. Shih died last Wednesday afternoon at a Hong Kong hospital with his children by his side. The cause was kidney failure. (R.I.P.)...

WEC's Urijah Faber breaks his hand & loses in one of the phattest MMA rematches against Mike Brown, last Sunday night in Sacramento...

American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee (both are the sisters of Lucy Ling) have been convicted of a “grave crime” in North Korea and sentenced to 12 years in prison...

According to Mediaweek and various industry sources, Nielsen Co. announced that it was ending publication of Radio & Records, known in the radio business for the past 36 years as R&R. Publication ceases immediately...

The BIG buzz is Jay-Z! Yup, Jay-Z drops "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune) Roc Nation" & everyone seems to be feeling what is a taste from his "BluePrint 3" album (dropping this 9/11). There is a Cookin' Mix of "R.O.A." that I love which samples a classic cut from Steam's 70's classic "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." The OFFICIAL Jay-Z radio single will be called "Off That" and will feature DRAKE....

COMING SOON & Rap Attack DJ's will get the EXCLUSIVE: RAKIM "The 7th Seal" (RA/Universal)...

Former Interscope And Warner Bros. Executive Kevin Black Joins Global Music Group

Kevin Black has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of, Global Music Group, it was announced today by Roland Turner, CEO, Global Music Group. In his new position, Mr. Black will assume overall responsibility for overseeing the creative vision and brand recognition of the label.

“Kevin is one-third owner of Global Music Group along with Mike Wilson  and is the Chief Operations Officer. He is number one in urban music and we are going to the top,” said Mr. Turner. His track record in music has resulted in breaking some of the biggest names in Urban and Hip-Hop over the past decade.

Former Warner Bros. Senior Executive, Mr. Black, exited his post as chairman of urban music at Warner Bros. in November 2008. Two years after joining the label, prior to leaving his post as Vice President of rap at Interscope Records. There he assisted in the multi-platinum success of Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Eve, Black Eyed Peas and The Game. The new appointment follows a recent expansion at Global Music Group, a Delaware corporation headquartered in Alabama, with offices now in Los Angeles, New York, and divisions in Canada and Europe, headed by Cliff Wise, CEO, Global Music Group Canada and Scott Shephard, President/CEO, Global Music Group Europe.

The label which operates several lines of business as divisions became known in June 2008, when its New York arm, submitted the winning bid, an offer of $24 million dollars, to acquire the Assets of Death Row Records. However, in December 2008, the label announced that it was seeking a buyer for Death Row, with the assets being auctioned again, for $18 million to a Canadian firm. Ron Bush, representative of Global Music Group New York, said today, “We are taking care of other details right now. We aren't involved in Death Row Records now.”
Global Music Group releases include musical gems ranging from British rapper Mark Morrison an all-women country band from Nashville Mustang Sally (street date: August 2009), to R&B songstress Lil’ Mo (street date: September 2009). Global Music Group is distributed by Fontana/Universal...

SUBWAY ART (see photo above)

During the 1970s and 80s, photographers Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant captured the environment and the imagination of a generation by documenting the burgeoning New York City graffiti movement. Now 25 years and more than a half a million copies later, their bestselling book Subway Art is available in a large-scale, deluxe format heightening the visual impact of their classic images.

With 70 additional photographs, and a fresh introduction and afterword, this collector's edition illustrates the passion, creativity and resourcefulness of unlikely kids inventing an art form destined to spread worldwide and spawn the present-day street art movement.

Subway Art is the definitive book on graffiti from its inception as a "social plague" to its role as a sounding board for young urban voices and up-and-coming artists. This classic book tells the story of the rise of graffiti from the New York City streets to galleries worldwide--a must for anyone that appreciates urban life, spectacular photography, and 1980s cool.

"While many authority figures refer to graffiti as an entry-level crime, inevitably leading writers to engage in ever-increasing levels of serious illegal activity," say Cooper and Chalfant, "our experience belies this beak view. We have found that the skills, concentration, dedication, strive for excellence, and, indeed, work ethic acquired through an apprenticeship in the train yards have in most cases led to successful careers ranging from the fine arts to graphic clothing, cyber design to music, and yes even working for the MTA, military and police force."

The generation of writers who appear in SUBWAY ART received an exposure that legitimized them and brought them to the attention of the world's media and international art collectors. They have become incredibly famous, not only among the youth who emulate them, but also among luminaries of the art world.

Cooper and Chalfant's groundbreaking book is poised to attract a new generation of graffiti enthusiasts.

About the Contributors
Martha Cooper is a Manhattan-based photojournalist, formerly on staff with the New York Post, where she began shooting images of street culture. Her images of graffiti and hip hop culture are world-renowned and widely published. Her photographs have appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian and Natural History magazines as well as several dozen books and journals. She is the Director of Photography at City Lore, the New York Center for Urban Folk Culture. Cooper lives in Manhattan but is working on a photo project in Sowebo, a Southwest Baltimore neighborhood.

Henry Chalfant is a well known and highly regarded urban culture photographer and videographer most notable for his graffiti and breakdance photography and film. He is highly regarded for his wide knowledge in hip hop and the underground culture. His photos are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, among others. Chalfant co-produced and did the background research and photo-documentation for the film, Style Wars, first shown on PBS television in 1984.

Henry and Martha are considered two of the foremost authorities on New York subway art.

70 Additional Images in a deluxe over-size format, 150 full color photos, New introductions and afterward, highlighting where the artists and authors are now.
"SUBWAY ART" will be available at fine book stores as well as on Amazon.com...

On June 20th, 2009, members of DKLA & The Zu Crew is teaming up with Area Food Banks to collect food and donations for those in need during the economic downturn at Hancock Park in Los Angeles. The Zu Crew is a community of individuals ranging from artists, musicians and industry professionals united for a common purpose, which is the overall improvement of society. Created in 2005, this group’s aim is promote unity, originality, as well as ensuring that these ideals will be articulated through future generations to come.

The economic downturn our nation is facing is a diverse collection of many communities. Many people have lost their jobs and homes. In California, the unemployment rate has jumped 10.5 percent its highest in 26 years, and its continues to climb. With unemployment come people losing their homes. There are 3.5 million people in the United States that will experience homelessness in a year. Out of that 3.5 million 1.35 million are children. In Los Angeles alone 80,000 people are homeless out of the 3.5 million in the nation.

The Zu Crew Food Bailout will consist of live music, food, and activities. We are contacting local vendors and possible corporate sponsors to participate. This drive will provide sponsors with an opportunity to connect face to face with consumers and market new products as well as gain exposure from various media outlets such as local news broadcast and blog pages. Many companies have offered to accept resumes, help people with resumes, and interview on the spot to fill current job openings. The food drive will provide aid not only to those families requiring assisted due to layoffs but also to those who are homeless. We anticipate that 25 to 35 percent of food collected will be set aside for the homeless here in downtown Los Angeles. For more info log onto: www.ZuCrewNation.com...

THE 2009 DMC AMERICAN BATTLEGROUND
DMC DJ Battles are the World's most longest running and most prestigious DJ Battles. This year, DJs took charge of their local battle scenes to bring DMC battles to both San Antonio TX and New Orleans LA for the first time ever, as well as to tried and true DJ battle cities: New York City and Los Angeles. DJs from across the USA will enter battles in these select cities with the hope of representing the United States in the 2009 DMC World DJ Championships in London on Sept. 11th and 12th.

In the traditional DMC DJ battle, which began in 1985, DJs showcase two and six minute routines on 2 Technics turntables and 1 mixer for the judges. The first US DJ to win this battle was DJ Cheese from Plainfield NJ who incorporated scratching into his routine, taking the 1986 DMC World title and forever changing what was more of a mixing competition to a Hip Hop DJ battle. Since that time Americans including DJ Cash Money, Roc Raida, Craze, ie.MERG, Qbert, Mix Master Mike and Apollo have claimed the World title. This year, DJs will enter the regional battles in TX, NY, CA and LA to gain a place in the 2009 DMC USA Finals being held at NYC's hot spot Santos Party House (96 Lafayette St) on August 1st.
Two additional DMC battles were created more recently to meet the battle DJs demand for variety. The DMC Team DJ Battle, debuted in 1999, and consists of crews of two to four DJs battling showcase style for six minutes each on as many as 6 Technics turntables and 4 mixers. Since 2008, DJ teams have been permitted to use computer programs such as Serato Scratch Live. The Team battle will be held in Los Angeles at The Sabor Lounge (847 S. Union Ave.) on June 27th along with the DMC West Coast Regional Battle.

The DMC Battle for Supremacy, a classic head to head style DJ battle, established in 2000, pairs competitors up and squares them off for two 90 second rounds on 2 Technics turntables and 1 mixer. This battle will be held in New York City at Santos Party House (96 Lafayette St) on June 13th along with the DMC East Coast Regional Battle.

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Ahsan "The Golden Child": (WRSU-NJ): "Just a reminder to update your email address book with my new email address: ahsanthegoldenchild@gmail.com...

DJ Sage (CFRO-Vancouver): We got it kicked off with a double shot from my favourite album of the year so far, Torae & Marco Polo's "Double Barrel" via Duckdown Records. There's been some solid releases so far this year, so that says a lot! We all know Marco Polo is a (Canadian) beast on the boards, and Torae is a certified fire-spitter, so that right there tells you that this album will be dope!
www.myspace.com/marcopolobeats
www.myspace.com/dayoungvet

We were then joined by Scarborough's own, Tona. We mainly discussed his new album, a joint effort with producer Lyve, entitled "Direct Deposit" on E1 Music. This is a dope album that features MCs such as Saukrates and JD Era, so don't sleep on it! Also check out the re-launched and re-vamped www.BigTona.com for all the latest on this talented Canadian!

After some phone mix-ups, we finally touched base with San Jose MC Jendor, with whom we discussed his being discovered after winning an MTV battle, his influences, collaborations and production. Check out www.JENDOR.net to get familiar with Jendor if you aren't already!

We also got into a load of music from Fokis, Mr. Porter, Blaq Poet & DJ Premier, Kid Cudi, Tona, Busta Rhymes and plenty more! Check out the podcast on www.UrbanRenewalProject.net up now!"...

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): What's the deal? Gonna keep it short and sweet. Had another great weekend with dope weather even if it got a little cold at the end. Had some hot shows in the area, and I was able to do a interview with Boston MC Sullee. In case you forgot Sullee was one of the MC's on the white rapper show with MC Serch. He's got a new single with Bussa Buss that's hot in the club right now. Got a lot of dope music this week so the show will be dope. And be on the lookout for a new RAKIM album. Yep you heard it here first. Now that should be dope!!!!! For more information about me DJ Chill Will go to www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

D-Tragic (805HipHop.com):   That new track by Illa J feat. Debbie Nova has been getting great feedback from our listeners. Be sure to listen to that one and play it! I’m also glad KRS and Buckshot put out that ROBOT track. I hope more artists listen to it and consider what they are talking about when they make their next songs. There are too many tracks that sound alike out. Everyone knows this! So that brings us out to something new I found out about. Did you know that MC HAMMER is coming back out?? People in the bay have always respected Hammer, even if he messed up a long time ago and spent all his money. At least he was “looking out” for his friends and families and getting them paid!! Unlike today where the attitude is like, “If I don’t make it, no one else is gonna make it” attitude. Anyways…Mick Boogie and MC Hammer have teamed up to present a new Mixtape featuring Some remixes of Hammer’s classics along with a few new tracks that he re-did in the studio to be released soon. He’s on “Turn this Mutha Out 2009” Remix feat. MR. FAB from the Bay area. This will be something that a lot of people will want to hear when it breaks! You know you used to have some Hammer Pants with the patent leather creepers doing the running man! I wonder if they still sell those pant anywhere? People used to rock them pretty tough in the 90’s. I’m proud of Mine!! LOL!

We realize it is hard to get your music added to commercial radio. We want to help out in increasing your exposure to thousands of people all over the US. LISTEN IN and check us out. We play the best of underground Hip-Hop, Exclusive Releases not out yet, and new music by known major acts and by unknown artists that are looking to build with you and get thier music heard. If you are an artists that is looking to get your music heard, hit us up today! We do adds weekly. We play WAY more artists than listed here. these are our TOP 30 CHARTS for this week. If you create a buzz, and we get requests to play your music, you could be on our Top 30 Charts. We send our charts to several online publications, magazines, mixtape DJ's, promoters, PD's, A&R's, Major and independent Record Labels and the most active reporting companies who track and chart spins all around the country on college and commercial terrestrial radio like CMJ, RAPATTACK, BUMSQUADDJ'z, CORE DJ's and several others"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "I'm not sure if Eminem was in on the prank or not, but either way, I don't think it was good publicity for him to have Borat's bare ass shoved in his face on national television at the MTV Movie Awards. But then again, I think that the Washington Nationals have more viewers than MTV these days.
Elektra records is back! This is great news! Does this mean that we are finally going to see an Angie Martinez sophmore LP? Or a Nate Dogg comeback record? I could always add another story to the house I built with Gerald Levert vinyl that Elektra sent me 10 years ago...

I was reading an article where Charli 2na was lamenting the fact that his forthcoming LP "Fish Outta Water" was actually recorded 4 years ago for Interscope and was never released. Sorry Charli, but there are no more major label roadblocks on putting albums out. Because there are no longer any major labels. When artists have slimline mixtapes and street albums out every other month, there's no excuse for not having new material out in the marketplace, except laziness. Plus, I don't trust a guy who spells his first name the way a girl would. Seriously, I'm just playing though. I do like Charli and always thought that he was the Beyonce of Jurassic 5.

Suge Knight is once again being sued after attempting to use the previously copyrighted name "Blackball" for his new record label. If he wanted to copy someone else's label, he should have gone for "Aftermath". It's the only other label in rap that doesn't release any music. And no, "Relapse" doesn't count. If you don't believe me just ask Joell Ortiz, Rakim, Raekwon, Hittman, Stat Quo, and Eve. Oh and "Detox" is coming. Right around the same time GM stock soars and Jon & Kate live happily ever after"...

Nate Abney (WKDU-Philly): "It is getting hot and that means summer is in full effect. Kobe made it to the Finals and has the advantage if he loses ( which I hope he does ) this will prove he can't lead a team to the title, but something is telling me this time he is going to get it done much to my dismay. Don't know if I like Chrisette Michele's second album better than her first but we'll see. Duck Down has a winner with KRS & BUCKSHOT. My Phillies may have found a new pitcher too. Need some more stimulus money for these rising gas prices too. Till next week"...
