What's
Upper?
The
Los Angeles Lakers Crush Magic for the
15th NBA Title!
Los
Angeles, looking for its first title since trading
O'Neal, entered Game 5 Sunday night with a 3-1 lead
over Orlando, having its greatest season since Shaq
skipped town. Lakers now the NBA World Champions!
Kobe Bryant was named the
NBA Finals Most Valuable Player and being
the best player on the team that just
won the championship. It was Kobe's first
time winning the award, because it went to
Shaquille O'Neal the first three times that
the Lakers won the title with Bryant on the roster...
If
you haven't gone to the movies yet to watch "Hangover"
then you gotta go! This is one of the funniest movies
ever!...
Props
to my O.G., MC Hammer & his new show on the
A&E channel, "Hammertime." Last Sunday nights
debut episodes were excellent & I look forward to
watching "Hammertime" every Sunday night. Although it's
been 20 years since Hammer exploded on the scene, he is
back & shows a side to Hammer that involves puttin'
God & his family first. I recommend you watch MC
Hammer cause it's "Hammertime!"...
Apl.de.Ap & the Black Eyed Peas STRIKES AGAIN w/ “Mare!"
by:
Joseph Allen Ruanto-Ramirez
Apl.de.Ap has yet again done something which im not
really suprised that he would have done. “Mare” is
another one of those mysogenist “songs” that has
multiple layers that just annoys the shit out of me.
Here i will briefly try to nicely break down his last 3
songs: “The APL Song,” “Bebot,” and now “Mare.” For many
PilAms, these 3 songs are a sense of pride, but listen
to what i gotta say and if you have any concerns or
anything, lets talk!
The APL Song
The APL song’s main focus is on the life of Apl.de.Ap
growing up as a biracial child in the Philippines and
his hardship with culture, identity, and “returning” as
well as showing the hardships of the PilipinO veterans.
Yes, im glad that he was able to relate and sample from
Asin’s “Balita,” but MANY Pilipin@s, not just Apl.de.Ap,
DOESNT know what the song is REALLY about. “Lupang
Pinangako” is the “English” translation of
Mindanaw/Mindanao. Pendong Aban from Asin has even
mentioned that majority of the songs Asin wrote about
was about their experiences as Pilipino settlers in
BangsaMoro and BangsaLumad, Mindanaw. Like i said, im
glad that Apl.de.Ap was able to relate to this song, but
has taken away from the actual meaning of “asking the
community to listen to the news of what is really
happening in Mindanaw.” Hardships of Pilipin@s in the
Philippines, though very compelling and makes you feel
“sad,” has a different toll when it comes to the
Katutubo communities/indigenous peoples. Historic and
contemporary forms of racism against indigenous peoples
are seen every day in the streets and barangays in the
Philippines. Trying not to play the “opression card” as
much, but PilAms have to understand that as Katutubos,
we are considered “lesser” than Pilipin@s in the
Philippines and in diaspora. Seen as nothing more than
“folk dances or suites,” “wall decorations and table
runners,” “costumes,” and what erks me the most…a sense
of “returning to pre-colonial state,” Katutubos have
fought against Pilipin@s for our basic human rights -
the right to land and ancestral domain, voting, equal
pay and education to that of the Pilipin@s, and basic
humanness. In the case of the “Land of Promise” (“Lupang
Pinangako”), Moros AND Lumads have been in war w/
Pilipin@s and Bisayans over who really controls the
land, BUT because of the demonization of Islam by the
West and their allies, its seen as a Moro/Muslim fight
when in fact MANY Lumads are fighting as well, but are
not heard or seen in the media. The “news” (“balita”) is
simple this - Mindanaw has been one of the longest,
unfinished wars in HIStory (“HIS” intentionally”) dating
back since Magellan came and tried to establish the
nation-state of the Philippines. The songs talk about
how war and hate have ravaged the land and how the
people are trying to reflect back on how it use to be.
Bebot
REAL meaning of Bebot: a colloquial term used by men who
are trying to attract womyn. it is a combination of the
english word “babes” (“beb) and the Spanished term to
show subordination or being short/small “pequito.” Thus
becoming “Bebot” (taken from my aunts who are teachers
in the Philippines and my mom who HATES that word). My
mom said that it became such a common word, that it
became the main form of demeaning Pilipinas in the
Philippines by mainly White military men. Pilipinas
would be “hollered” at in the streets and in the
military base by these military men and then laugh about
it. SO…the title alone is problematic and i’m pretty
sure that the content of the song has been debated on
multiple times by many people, so im not really gonna go
into that context, but instead, the music video. 1st
generation HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LYRICS AT ALL!
Though im glad they tried to show the life of PilipinOs
in Stockton, still…no relations to the songs. 2nd
generation on the other hand has stereotypes beyond
compare and, as my mom would say, stupid. The discourse
on the 2nd generation music video is beyond what Tumblr
can handle, so im gonna jump ahead to an interesting,
yet tangent observation. ive seen MANY “progressive”
PilAm activists, some who even claim to have national
and global networking, fighting for Pilipina rights and
other issues, yet see them grinding and going crazy to
the song. Hypocracy at its best. When ever i hear this
song, i LITERALLY stop dancing and try to migrate out of
the dance floor. Not even worth my time.
Mare
“Mare” comes from the shortened version of “Komare” or
“Komadre” usually a term of endearment traditionally
said from one female friend to another or when a female
friend becomes the godmother to one’s child. its has
recently beend adopted to mean “female friend” to even
“sister.” Aside from the broken Tagalog and how, if you
really analyze it, the lyrics dont really make sense,
the hypersexualization and misogyny found in the lyrics
are striking. “Dalaga” doesnt mean “pretty girl,” it is
a term usually reserved for a girl who is still a virgin
and who is underage. Apl.de.Ap thus is stating that he
wants to “see this young virgin dance in front of him”
as his friends (“barkadad”) watches along and cheers the
action on. Apl.de.Ap is calling on the “young virgin
girl” to come “close to him” as he “ge-ge-gets it.” As
part of his chorus translated merely says “i like it
[like that] sister.” if i was the sister…OH HELL NAW!
There are alot of other things about this song that
burns me up and no, not because im gay and i sometimes
can get flamey, but this song is F’d up beyond compare.
Ranging from calling the “dalaga” a “professional” who
gets “paid for dancing” to asking her go with him
“after,” i honestly can say that Apl.de.Ap SHOULD STOP
MAKING SONGS IN TAGALOG PERIOD! In general, i think he
should just stop…
ON A LAST NOTE - i know Apl.de.Ap personally and have
had “interesting conversations” with him. He has always
wanted me and my group/tribe to perform for him and be
part of his music videos. HELL NO! Everytime i see him,
he always says “Oh shit, its my Moro brother…so when you
gonna perform for me.” First - this isnt the World’s
Faire and i am not no orientalized, exotic tribal person
who performs for mere entertainment. Second - Apl.de.Ap
has always looked down on Katutubos and Third - i will
NEVER be part of a music video that does HELLA wrong to
my sister...
According to Mediaweek and various industry
sources, Nielsen Co. announced that it was ending

SUBWAY ART (see photo above)
During the 1970s and 80s, photographers Martha Cooper
and Henry Chalfant captured the environment
and the imagination of a generation by documenting the
burgeoning New York City graffiti movement. Now 25 years
and more than a half a million copies later, their
bestselling book Subway Art is available in a
large-scale, deluxe format heightening the visual impact
of their classic images.
With 70 additional photographs, and a fresh introduction
and afterword, this collector's edition illustrates the
passion, creativity and resourcefulness of unlikely kids
inventing an art form destined to spread worldwide and
spawn the present-day street art movement.
Subway Art is the definitive book on graffiti from its
inception as a "social plague" to its role as a sounding
board for young urban voices and up-and-coming artists.
This classic book tells the story of the rise of
graffiti from the New York City streets to galleries
worldwide--a must for anyone that appreciates urban
life, spectacular photography, and 1980s cool.
"While many authority figures refer to graffiti as an
entry-level crime, inevitably leading writers to engage
in ever-increasing levels of serious illegal activity,"
say Cooper and Chalfant, "our experience belies this
beak view. We have found that the skills, concentration,
dedication, strive for excellence, and, indeed, work
ethic acquired through an apprenticeship in the train
yards have in most cases led to successful careers
ranging from the fine arts to graphic clothing, cyber
design to music, and yes even working for the MTA,
military and police force."
The generation of writers who appear in SUBWAY ART
received an exposure that legitimized them and brought
them to the attention of the world's media and
international art collectors. They have become
incredibly famous, not only among the youth who emulate
them, but also among luminaries of the art world.
Cooper and Chalfant's groundbreaking book is poised to
attract a new generation of graffiti enthusiasts.
About the Contributors
Martha Cooper is a Manhattan-based
photojournalist, formerly on staff with the New York
Post, where she began shooting images of street culture.
Her images of graffiti and hip hop culture are
world-renowned and widely published. Her photographs
have appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian and
Natural History magazines as well as several dozen books
and journals. She is the Director of Photography at City
Lore, the New York Center for Urban Folk Culture. Cooper
lives in Manhattan but is working on a photo project in
Sowebo, a Southwest Baltimore neighborhood.
Henry Chalfant is a well known and highly
regarded urban culture photographer and videographer
most notable for his graffiti and breakdance photography
and film. He is highly regarded for his wide knowledge
in hip hop and the underground culture. His photos are
in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York City, and the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, among others. Chalfant co-produced and did
the background research and photo-documentation for the
film, Style Wars, first shown on PBS television in 1984.
Henry and Martha are considered two of the foremost
authorities on New York subway art.

On June 20th, 2009, members of DKLA & The Zu
Crew is teaming up with Area Food Banks to collect
food and donations for those in need during the economic
downturn at Hancock Park in Los Angeles.
The Zu Crew is a community of individuals ranging from
artists, musicians and industry professionals united for
a common purpose, which is the overall improvement of
society. Created in 2005, this group’s aim is promote
unity, originality, as well as ensuring that these
ideals will be articulated
through future generations to come.
The
economic downturn our nation is facing is a diverse
collection of many communities. Many people have lost
their jobs and homes. In California, the unemployment
rate has jumped 10.5 percent its highest in 26 years,
and its continues to climb. With unemployment come
people losing their homes. There are 3.5 million people
in the United States that will experience homelessness
in a year. Out of that 3.5 million 1.35 million are
children. In Los Angeles alone 80,000 people are
homeless out of the 3.5 million in the nation.
The
Zu Crew Food Bailout will consist of live music, food,
and activities. We are contacting local vendors and
possible corporate sponsors to participate. This drive
will provide sponsors with an opportunity to connect
face to face with consumers and market new products as
well as gain exposure from various media outlets such as
local news broadcast and blog pages. Many companies have
offered to accept resumes, help people with resumes, and
interview on the spot to fill current job openings. The
food drive will provide aid not only to those families
requiring assisted due to layoffs but also to those who
are homeless. We anticipate that 25 to 35 percent of
food collected will be set aside for the homeless here
in downtown Los Angeles. For more info log onto:

THE 2009 DMC AMERICAN BATTLEGROUND
DMC DJ Battles are the World's most longest

across the USA will enter battles in these select cities
with the hope of representing the United States in the
2009 DMC World DJ Championships in London on Sept. 11th
and 12th.
In the traditional DMC DJ battle, which began in 1985,
DJs showcase two and six minute routines on 2 Technics
turntables and 1 mixer for the judges. The first US DJ
to win this battle was DJ Cheese from Plainfield
NJ who incorporated scratching into his routine, taking
the 1986 DMC World title and forever changing what was
more of a mixing competition to a Hip Hop DJ battle.
Since that time Americans including DJ Cash Money,
Roc Raida, Craze, ie.MERG, Qbert,
Mix Master Mike and Apollo have claimed
the World title. This year, DJs will enter the regional
battles in TX, NY, CA and LA to gain a place in the 2009
DMC USA Finals being held at NYC's hot spot Santos Party
House (96 Lafayette St) on August 1st.
Two additional DMC battles were created more recently to
meet the battle DJs demand for variety. The DMC Team DJ
Battle, debuted in 1999, and consists of crews of two to
four DJs battling showcase style for six minutes each on
as many as 6 Technics turntables and 4 mixers. Since
2008, DJ teams have been permitted to use computer
programs such as Serato Scratch Live. The Team
battle will be held in Los Angeles at The Sabor Lounge
(847 S. Union Ave.) on June 27th along with the DMC West
Coast Regional Battle.
The DMC Battle for Supremacy, a classic head to head
style DJ battle, established in 2000, pairs competitors
up and squares them off for two 90 second rounds on 2
Technics turntables and 1 mixer. This battle will be
held in New York City at Santos Party House (96
Lafayette St) on June 13th along with the DMC East Coast
Regional Battle.

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Jason-D
(RadioBoise.Org):
"It's been an entertaining week for sports. There's a
few I don't get into until the playoffs and hockey and
basketball both fall in that category. I'm glad to see
the Magic showing some signs of life against the
Lakers. I just want to see a good series. If you
really want to see a battle though, you have to see the
Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins
go at it Friday night. They're tied at three games a
piece so it's winner take all for the Stanley Cup. It's
guaranteed to be some good fights and unlike basketball,
it's between the players instead of the players and
fans. But I digress.
Speaking of Detroit though, it's hard to ignore how much
solid Hip-Hop is coming out of that area. Just in the
past few months with Finale's "A Pipe Dream And A
Promise", Big Tone's "The Art Of Ink",
J-Dilla's "Jay Stay Paid", and various singles/spots
from Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Black
Milk, Royce Da 5'9" and others, they have really
taken over my playlist. And it really is a beautiful
thing. There's this emphais again on lyrics and boom bap
production that just really stands out. Respect to
Detroit.
I
also have to shout the homies Marco Polo & Torae
for the new "Double Barrel" cd. It is one of my
favorites of the year so far and we've already featured
seven different tracks on the shows. Not too many albums
you can say that you've played seven tracks off of it.
Looking forward to new CD's from Blaq Poet and
DJ JS-1 this month. I also have to peep the new Soul
Assasins "Intermission" CD that Jess @ Spectre just
posted. We've had the lead single "Classical" in
rotation for a minute. Don't let em fool you. It's a
good time for Hip-Hop"...
Chill Will (WCBN-MI):
"What's up people? Another good weekend at the club and
on radio. Rocked Club Crave on Thursday for the
Lion's C-Roberson's birthday party. Shout out to all
the people who came through, Flavor of Love's own
Delicious included. Also in case you've been under a
rock Jay-Z's DOA joint is what everybody's talkin
about. Some say it's because he's saying what everyone
is thinking. You be the judge. Also I gotta say again
check the Red & Meth album. It's fire!!!!!! For
more information about me DJ Chill Will go to

DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver):We kicked off the show
with a double-shot from Mos Def's new LP, "The
Ecstatic" on Downtown Records. The album has a
little bit of everything, for the heads who love the
Black Star sound to those who were loving Mos' sound
on “The New Danger”. This eclectic album should do well
in all circles so check it out!
We were then joined by T. Dot MC, Theo 3. We
discussed his beginnings as a rapper in high school down
to the open mics, then onto his working relationship and
friendship with DJ Grouch. We also discussed
Toronto being the "Screwface Capital" as well as some
remixes and future projects Theo 3 has in store. Check
out his myspace (www.myspace.com/theology3) for all the
latest on Theo 3!
Right up next we were joined by Vancouver veteran and
Canadian Hip-Hop legend, Red 1 from The
Rascalz. We got into some discussion about the
origins of the Rascalz movement, the Canadian hip-hop
scene, and the impact Northern Touch had on all those
involved, such as Red 1 himself, Little X, Kardinal
Offishall and more. Red also has a new project in the
works, so check him out at
www.myspace.com/red1music.
We were also treated tonight when Jay Kin (
www.myspace.com/jaykin ) and DJ Seko
(
www.myspace.com/djseko604 ) came through
the studio! DJ Seko
rocked the 1's and 2's in Sage's place and Jay dropped
some rhymes and some exclusives from his new album, "On
The Humble". Check out the release parties on June 28th
starting at the John B. Pub in Coquitlam from
7-10pm and then over to Republic in Vancouver!
We even played Balderdash live at the end of the show!
All in all, classic show! Lots of music from Blaq
Poet, to the Rascalz, Albe Back, Jadakiss, Jay
Kin, Tona, Marco Polo & Torae, Red & Meth and
plenty more! Check out the podcast on
www.UrbanRenewalProject.net
now!...
Nesto (WODU-VA): "What's
up people? Music mention. Nothing new, but that new
track from Jay Z is a refreshing listen. He goes
at the "not so listenable"
crowd of rappers out there and puts them on blast, but
honestly, I'm feeling that beat more then anything..
cold!!!!"...
Edgie Kokoski
(WUNH-NH): "I love it when co-workers call in
sick on gorgeous days and then come in the next day and
go out of their way to tell you how "sick" they were.
Monday was an absolutely perfect day in New Hampshire,
and today was rainy and miserable. But guess who was
back in the office? My "sick" co-worker. "I felt
terrible" she gushed before I was two steps into the
office, "I didn't get out of bed yesterday until 10
o'clock". First revealing mistake. Because when I'm
sick, I can't sleep due to the nausea, cold, fever,
whatever. I'm usually on the couch at 4:30AM watching
Billy Mays infomercials waiting for the news to come
on. Then later in the day she says "I'm so tired today".
Tired? I though you slept in until 10 o'clock? Or you
are worn out from thinking up that B.S. story about
being sick? I guess that you got the tan from that
horrible sickness too.
I just read breaking news that thug rapper Max B
got 20 years for conspiracy. This is another
disappointing example of justice not being served in the
Hip-Hop world. He should have received life with no
chance for studio time work release. Because the only
way to make a terrible rap artist worse is to make then
record while incarcerated. Just ask Shyne and
C-Murder.
Poor DJ Jazzy Jeff. He was thrown out of a gig in
Kansas City in the Power & Light District for playing
"urban" music. I'm not sure what they expected when they
hired him to play the venue, but I wonder what they
thought was so threatening about the Rihanna
record that Jazzy Jeff claimed he was playing at the
time. I also wonder if they pitched him out the front
door like Uncle Phil used to.
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm pretty sick of
Jay-Z thinking that he can dictate what goes on
in Hip-Hop. Jay's new song "Death Of Auto-Tune" suggests
that the production style is lifeless, and that we
should all move on. Just like he did after he killed
Def Jam"...
