MySpace to cut staff by 30%
By
Georg Szalai
News Corp.'s MySpace will reduce its staff
by nearly 30% to become more entrepreneurial and nimble
again, the social networking site.
The expected streamlining will hit across all U.S.
divisions and will lower the total number of U.S. staff
to 1,000.
"Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and
hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble
team-oriented company," said MySpace CEO Owen Van
Natta. "I understand that these changes are painful
for many. They are also necessary for the long-term
health and culture of MySpace." He said the goal is to
"return to an environment of innovation that is centered
on our user and our product."
Added Jonathan Miller, News Corp.'s CEO of
digital media and chief digital officer: "MySpace grew
too big considering the realities of today's
marketplace. I believe this restructuring will help
MySpace operate much more effectively both structurally
and financially moving forward"...

THE
SCRATCH DJ ACADEMY GUIDE
ON
THE RECORD: The Scratch DJ Academy Guide
is an authoritative guide to the dynamic art of DJing.
More than just a “how-to,” this is a sonic adventure,
guiding readers through 40 years of music, creativity,
and culture. From beat matching to body tricks,
Grandmaster Flash to Fatboy Slim, the Bronx
to Ibiza, On the Record is the definitive cultural guide
to this art form. So whether you're learning the ropes,
considering going pro, or just want to tap your inner
DJ, this book is for you.
Testimonials:
“This book needs to be in your vinyl collection. It's
what every DJ needs to be in the game and every music
fan needs to understand the game. I put all my producers
and DJ's on this 'cuz it's what's gonna take them to the
next level.”
-Snoop Dogg
“It's time for someone to document the success of the
art of DJing and where it's going. We're at that point
where we need some kind of bible that covers every
aspect of DJ culture. This book can do that.”
-DJ AM
"ON THE RECORD is a blueprint for anyone who has
ever thought about getting into DJing. It explores how
we do it, but more importantly, why we do what we do.
The old and new school masters break it all down here."
-Z-Trip
“Having worked with many DJ's in my life and being one
myself, I can tell you that this book is a must-read. If
you're a battle champion, a club DJ, or just a music
enthusiast, you will definitely benefit from reading
this book. Every one of us is a DJ. This book just makes
us better. It's about time!”
-Darryl McDaniels of Run-D.M.C.
About
the Book
Despite the popularity and allure of the DJ, access to
the art form, culture and lifestyle has been tucked away
behind velvet ropes. Until now. The first book featuring
Scratch DJ Academy, the world's premiere brand in DJ
education and access, explains how DJs are some of the
most important artists in music and influencers in our
culture today. ON THE RECORD: The Scratch DJ Academy
Guide, gives readers an exciting peak into this
dynamic world, ultimately challenging everyone to tap
their inner DJ.
This book helps readers understand what to listen for in
music, where to purchase it, how to perform it and more.
Most books about DJs add to the DJ's mystique, but this
book brings them out of the shadows to show that they're
not very different than everyone else. ON THE RECORD
is more than a how-to guide, and explains the DJ's
lifestyle, culture, and abilities.
The term “disc jockey” started out as an insulting term,
assuming that the job simply entailed riding records in
the radio booth. It was a daunting task to move from
playing music on the radio to performing in front of
live audiences, since people at the time were used to
live bands and orchestras. But the DJ persevered, and
decades later legends like Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster
Flash, and Kool Herc introduced Hip Hop to the nation,
while Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles established the
infectious roots of House music. ON THE RECORD
takes the reader inside the radio stations, block
parties, raves, and clubs where it all started.
ON THE RECORD delves into the reality of being a
DJ and the culture that surrounds it. The book looks at
the lives of celebrity DJs – how they got their start,
their travel, and the bookings that keep them going. It
includes interviews, useful tips, and fun anecdotes from
the world's top DJs including DJ AM, Z-Trip and Pete
Tong. But these pros aren't the only ones who can live
the DJ life. The authors advise beginners on how to get
going, from handling your first gig to getting a club
residency and beyond. In the end, it all pays off. DJs
not only influence the music you listen to now and will
in the future, but also the clothes you wear, the TV and
movies you watch, and the technology you use.
Musically, DJs do much more than just sling records and
make people dance; they have to draw on their knowledge
of song structure, rhythm, BPM and tempo and much more.
Luckily, ON THE RECORD shows you how to listen to
and appreciate music like a DJ. The book explains the
old and the new equipment, the techniques and even
explains the art of the mixtape. It also includes DIY
exercises, so you'll learn firsthand how to mix,
scratch, and “drop on the 1”. And there's even a
glossary to define everything from cueing and sampling
to beatmatching and beat juggling.
Whether you want to go pro, impress your friends at
house parties, or just a music enthusiast, this is your
book.

Apl.de.Ap & the Black Eyed Peas STRIKES AGAIN w/ “Mare!"
by:
Joseph Allen Ruanto-Ramirez
Apl.de.Ap has yet again done something which im not
really suprised that he would have done. “Mare” is
another one of those mysogenist “songs” that has
multiple layers that just annoys the shit out of me.
Here i will briefly try to nicely break down his last 3
songs: “The APL Song,” “Bebot,” and now “Mare.” For many
PilAms, these 3 songs are a sense of pride, but listen
to what i gotta say and if you have any concerns or
anything, lets talk!
The APL Song
The APL song’s main focus is on the life of Apl.de.Ap
growing up as a biracial child in the Philippines and
his hardship with culture, identity, and “returning” as
well as showing the hardships of the PilipinO veterans.
Yes, im glad that he was able to relate and sample from
Asin’s “Balita,” but MANY Pilipin@s, not just Apl.de.Ap,
DOESNT know what the song is REALLY about. “Lupang
Pinangako” is the “English” translation of
Mindanaw/Mindanao. Pendong Aban from Asin has even
mentioned that majority of the songs Asin wrote about
was about their experiences as Pilipino settlers in
BangsaMoro and BangsaLumad, Mindanaw. Like i said, im
glad that Apl.de.Ap was able to relate to this song, but
has taken away from the actual meaning of “asking the
community to listen to the news of what is really
happening in Mindanaw.” Hardships of Pilipin@s in the
Philippines, though very compelling and makes you feel
“sad,” has a different toll when it comes to the
Katutubo communities/indigenous peoples. Historic and
contemporary forms of racism against indigenous peoples
are seen every day in the streets and barangays in the
Philippines. Trying not to play the “opression card” as
much, but PilAms have to understand that as Katutubos,
we are considered “lesser” than Pilipin@s in the
Philippines and in diaspora. Seen as nothing more than
“folk dances or suites,” “wall decorations and table
runners,” “costumes,” and what erks me the most…a sense
of “returning to pre-colonial state,” Katutubos have
fought against Pilipin@s for our basic human rights -
the right to land and ancestral domain, voting, equal
pay and education to that of the Pilipin@s, and basic
humanness. In the case of the “Land of Promise” (“Lupang
Pinangako”), Moros AND Lumads have been in war w/
Pilipin@s and Bisayans over who really controls the
land, BUT because of the demonization of Islam by the
West and their allies, its seen as a Moro/Muslim fight
when in fact MANY Lumads are fighting as well, but are
not heard or seen in the media. The “news” (“balita”) is
simple this - Mindanaw has been one of the longest,
unfinished wars in HIStory (“HIS” intentionally”) dating
back since Magellan came and tried to establish the
nation-state of the Philippines. The songs talk about
how war and hate have ravaged the land and how the
people are trying to reflect back on how it use to be.
Bebot
REAL meaning of Bebot: a colloquial term used by men who
are trying to attract womyn. it is a combination of the
english word “babes” (“beb) and the Spanished term to
show subordination or being short/small “pequito.” Thus
becoming “Bebot” (taken from my aunts who are teachers
in the Philippines and my mom who HATES that word). My
mom said that it became such a common word, that it
became the main form of demeaning Pilipinas in the
Philippines by mainly White military men. Pilipinas
would be “hollered” at in the streets and in the
military base by these military men and then laugh about
it. SO…the title alone is problematic and i’m pretty
sure that the content of the song has been debated on
multiple times by many people, so im not really gonna go
into that context, but instead, the music video. 1st
generation HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LYRICS AT ALL!
Though im glad they tried to show the life of PilipinOs
in Stockton, still…no relations to the songs. 2nd
generation on the other hand has stereotypes beyond
compare and, as my mom would say, stupid. The discourse
on the 2nd generation music video is beyond what Tumblr
can handle, so im gonna jump ahead to an interesting,
yet tangent observation. ive seen MANY “progressive”
PilAm activists, some who even claim to have national
and global networking, fighting for Pilipina rights and
other issues, yet see them grinding and going crazy to
the song. Hypocracy at its best. When ever i hear this
song, i LITERALLY stop dancing and try to migrate out of
the dance floor. Not even worth my time.
Mare
“Mare” comes from the shortened version of “Komare” or
“Komadre” usually a term of endearment traditionally
said from one female friend to another or when a female
friend becomes the godmother to one’s child. its has
recently beend adopted to mean “female friend” to even
“sister.” Aside from the broken Tagalog and how, if you
really analyze it, the lyrics dont really make sense,
the hypersexualization and misogyny found in the lyrics
are striking. “Dalaga” doesnt mean “pretty girl,” it is
a term usually reserved for a girl who is still a virgin
and who is underage. Apl.de.Ap thus is stating that he
wants to “see this young virgin dance in front of him”
as his friends (“barkadad”) watches along and cheers the
action on. Apl.de.Ap is calling on the “young virgin
girl” to come “close to him” as he “ge-ge-gets it.” As
part of his chorus translated merely says “i like it
[like that] sister.” if i was the sister…OH HELL NAW!
There are alot of other things about this song that
burns me up and no, not because im gay and i sometimes
can get flamey, but this song is F’d up beyond compare.
Ranging from calling the “dalaga” a “professional” who
gets “paid for dancing” to asking her go with him
“after,” i honestly can say that Apl.de.Ap SHOULD STOP
MAKING SONGS IN TAGALOG PERIOD! In general, i think he
should just stop…
ON A LAST NOTE - i know Apl.de.Ap personally and have
had “interesting conversations” with him. He has always
wanted me and my group/tribe to perform for him and be
part of his music videos. HELL NO! Everytime i see him,
he always says “Oh shit, its my Moro brother…so when you
gonna perform for me.” First - this isnt the World’s
Faire and i am not no orientalized, exotic tribal person
who performs for mere entertainment. Second - Apl.de.Ap
has always looked down on Katutubos and Third - i will
NEVER be part of a music video that does HELLA wrong to
my sister...

THE 2009 DMC AMERICAN BATTLEGROUND
DMC DJ Battles are the World's most longest
running and most prestigious DJ Battles. This year, DJs
took charge of their local battle scenes to bring DMC
battles to both San Antonio TX and New Orleans LA for
the first time ever, as well as to tried and true DJ
battle cities: New York City and Los Angeles. DJs from
across the USA will enter battles in these select cities
with the hope of representing the United States in the
2009 DMC World DJ Championships in London on Sept. 11th
and 12th.
In the traditional DMC DJ battle, which began in 1985,
DJs showcase two and six minute routines on 2 Technics
turntables and 1 mixer for the judges. The first US DJ
to win this battle was DJ Cheese from Plainfield
NJ who incorporated scratching into his routine, taking
the 1986 DMC World title and forever changing what was
more of a mixing competition to a Hip Hop DJ battle.
Since that time Americans including DJ Cash Money,
Roc Raida, Craze, ie.MERG, Qbert,
Mix Master Mike and Apollo have claimed
the World title. This year, DJs will enter the regional
battles in TX, NY, CA and LA to gain a place in the 2009
DMC USA Finals being held at NYC's hot spot Santos Party
House (96 Lafayette St) on August 1st.
Two additional DMC battles were created more recently to
meet the battle DJs demand for variety. The DMC Team DJ
Battle, debuted in 1999, and consists of crews of two to
four DJs battling showcase style for six minutes each on
as many as 6 Technics turntables and 4 mixers. Since
2008, DJ teams have been permitted to use computer
programs such as Serato Scratch Live. The Team
battle will be held in Los Angeles at The Sabor Lounge
(847 S. Union Ave.) on June 27th along with the DMC West
Coast Regional Battle.
The DMC Battle for Supremacy, a classic head to head
style DJ battle, established in 2000, pairs competitors
up and squares them off for two 90 second rounds on 2
Technics turntables and 1 mixer. This battle will be
held in New York City at Santos Party House (96
Lafayette St) on June 13th along with the DMC East Coast
Regional Battle.
PRIZES:
1st: The 2009 US Team, US Battle for Supremacy
and regional champions will receive the recently
released
Rane
SL 3 as well as prizes from our other
sponsors.
2nd: Runners up in the Supremacy and regional battles
will win UDG/Rane Creator Backpacks.
3rd: Regional DJs who place 3rd will receive UDG/Rane
Messenger Bags.
On Aug. 1: The 2009 DMC US Champion will take home the
Rane
TTM 57SL mixer. Runner up receives the

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Bri-G
(UNbassadors
Entertainment Group-NY):
"Finally, after 30 years of life, I was able to catch DJ
Jazzy Jeff spinning live. Wednesday night at
Mansion (M2 for u outta town folks) I had the
opportunity to see him, A.M., A-Trak (both
of whom I've seen several times in the past), and a
really dope performance from Matt & Kim.
If your unfamiliar with Matt & Kim, think of them as an
updated version of the White Stripes. Dope shit.
Check them out.
My roommate has a amazing habit of hanging out with hot
model chicks, so there I was, upstairs in VIP with about
5 model chicks, free alchohol, and my roommate. Solid
ratio. Solid night.
Last night proved to me that my dude Madd Linx is
dead on when he describes Serato as "the gift and
the curse". Obviously, we all know why it's a gift, but
I'm also sure we've all noticed the things that make it
one of the worst inventions for DJ Culture ever.
For instance, last night at my regular thursday
afterwork rooftop party, one of the typical stockbroker
scumbag clientle types walks over to the DJ booth. He
begins talking about how he wants to learn how to DJ,
because "that computer program makes it so easy". So i
brush what i should have taken as an insult to the side
and start to talk to him about it. At this point i'm
playing a Party Ben disco-ish remix of Kid
Cudi "Day N Nite". Dude asks what it is and proceeds
to write it in his blackberry.
Now, different DJs have different stances on this issue.
I'm all about letting another DJ take notes from my set
because, well, I do it too. If I'm out somewhere and
hear DJ Vice play some random ass dope record, I'm gonna
make a note of it and look it up when i get home. I've
had other Djs do it while I spin all the time and i'm
completely cool with it.
But, I absolutely draw the line at wanna-be Djs trying
to take notes so they can begin a career Djing on the
side so they can look cool for their loser stockbroker
type friends. Dude tried doing it 2 more times
throughout the night. All during random remixes that he
wouldn't come across if his life depended on it. So
what'd I do? I turned the track title off and told em it
was something else. Fuck it.
Well, I'm out. My uncle just got out of jail and we're
having a welcome home party for em this weekend, so i'm
off to Connecticut. You know us Irish Catholics, we're
the original hood folks of the U.S.A."...

DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver BC): "We got it warmed
up by featuring Soulstice's album, “Beyond
Borders”. The album is an international collaboration
with MCs from around the world, including a couple
Canadian cats! The album is bangin', so don't sleep!
We then spoke to the Chicago MC himself, who is
currently in Washington. We discussed everything from
current social issues facing North America and the world
as a whole, his new international project and artist
exposure with the conscious lyricist. We also got into
some talk about collaborations, remixes and future
touring plans! Hit up iTunes and search Soulstice
to check out his work! Keep up to date with him on his
MySpace Page!
www.myspace.com/soulstice
We were then joined by the incredible duo of Canadian
producer Marco Polo and Brooklyn MC, Torae!
This interview touched on everything from the formation
of the group and touring, to the creative process that
went into making their bangin' album, "Double Barrel".
We also got into what music the two were feeling, as
well as if Marco Polo being Canadian has rubbed off on
Torae in terms of liking maple syrup and hockey, for
example! Check out the duo's MySpace page to keep up
with all their moves!
www.MySpace.com/DoubleBarrel08! Don't
sleep on "Double Barrel", out now on Duck Down
Records! It's one of the best albums of the year so
definitely don't miss it!
The Urban Renewal Project also has to pass along
our birthday wishes to the late Tupac Amaru Shakur,
who would have been 38yrs old, R.I.P.! We got into a mix
of some of 2Pac's best work in his honour.
We also got into a gang of goodness by the likes of
Theo 3, Raekwon, Jay Kin, Ghostface Killah, Skyzoo &
Maino, Nas, Tona, Marco Polo & Torae, Soulstice and
plenty more! Great show!! Download the podcast at:
www.UrbanRenewalProject.net in a couple
of days!"...
Jason-D
(RadioBoise.Org): "It was interesting to see all
the comments on
rapattacklives.com
last week about Jay-Z's "Death
Of Autotune" song. If you didn't look, they ranged from
agreement and happiness that somebody finally said it to
a little resentment that Jay thinks he controls the
music biz like that. I found a little truth in all of
it. I guess the real question for me is what's next?
Since Autotune was a gimmic in my opinion, it was going
to die anyway. Proclaiming it dead is somewhat of a
gimmic then as well. So I'm reserving judgement for
later. Where does Jigga go from here?"...
Jeffrey Oakes (WMHB-ME): "Hey everybody,
Once again its the hump day chart meal, I know I'm
hungry! I hope everyone's weekend was relaxing, I had
the pleasure of being in a classroom learning of all
things, and I've only been out of school for a few
weeks...what gives? Thanks again for the hook ups, let
me know if there is anything else I can do for you!"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
"What's up people? I'm glad the NBA season is
over. I can get to bed a little earlier now. That had to
be one of the worst finals I've seen. Congrats to the
Lakers, but watch out for the Celtics next
year"...

(WUNH-NH):
"
1.
Brett Favre considering a return to the NFL?
Holy crap! This is the most shocking news since Adam
Lambert came out of the closet. I hope that you do
come back Brett so that I can watch you have the
embarrassing season that you deserve. I think I am
actually rooting for Michael Vick to come back
more than I am Brett Favre now.
2. I don't think that it is coincidence that $400,000 of
diamonds disappeared during a Lindsay Lohan photo
shoot in London. I don't think that Scotland Yard will
find the diamonds, but I think that they might find
$400,000 worth of coke where the diamonds used to be.
Hopefully, she was smart and kept some of the cash from
the fence. Because I don't see any sequels to "Freaky
Friday" on the horizon.
3. I don't know who Heidi and Spencer are,
but I'm nearly certain that they might be the biggest
assholes I've ever seen on TV. And that's pretty bad
when you are on a show with Stephen Baldwin and
Sanjaya from American Idol.
4. I'm not sure when David Letterman became the
anti-Christ, but I am sure that every late night
comedian made jokes about Sarah Palin's
family for months during the election. Not that Sarah
Palin's family needs help from comedians to look
ridiculous. But after seeing all of Joe Biden's
public gaffes, Sarah Palin doesn't seem like a bad
alternative anymore. At least she doesn't look like she
is old enough to have signed the Declaration of
Independence like Biden does.
5. I find it hard to believe that David Carradine
was murdered. Because if someone was trying to thread
rope around my throat and junk at the same time, I think
that I would use all of my Kung Fu powers to fight back.
Or at least put some clothes on"...
