DJ AM had a history of drug addiction, particularly crack cocaine. He was slated to host a new MTV show called 'Gone Too Far' about drug addicts that was set to premiere October 5th. 11 years ago he tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head, but the gun jammed. Rapper behind 'Roxanne's Revenge' gets Warner Music to pay for Ph.D

BY Walter Dawkins

Roxanne's revenge was sweet indeed. Twenty-five years after the first queen of Hip-Hop was stiffed on her royalty checks, Dr. Roxanne Shante boasts an Ivy League Ph.D. - financed by a forgotten clause in her first record deal. "This is a story that needs to be told," Shante said. "I'm an example that you can be a teenage mom, come from the projects, and be raised by a single parent, and you can still come out of it a doctor."  Her prognosis wasn't as bright in the years after the '80s icon scored a smash hit at age 14: "Roxanne's Revenge," a razor-tongued response to rap group UTFO's mega-hit "Roxanne, Roxanne." The 1984 single sold 250,000 copies in New York City alone, making Shante (born Lolita Gooden) Hip-Hop's first female celebrity.  She blazed a trail followed by Lil' Kim, Salt-N-Pepa and Queen Latifah - although Shante didn't share their success. After two albums, Shante said, she was disillusioned by the sleazy music industry and swindled by her record company. The teen mother, living in the Queensbridge Houses, recalled how her life was shattered.  "Everybody was cheating with the contracts, stealing and telling lies," she said. "And to find out that I was just a commodity was heartbreaking."  But Shante, then 19, remembered a clause in her Warner Music recording contract: The company would fund her education for life. She eventually cashed in, earning a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell to the tune of $217,000 - all covered by the label. But getting Warner Music to cough up the dough was a battle. "They kept stumbling over their words, and they didn't have an exact reason why they were telling me no," Shante said. She figured Warner considered the clause a throwaway, never believing a teen mom in public housing would attend college. The company declined to comment for this story. Shante found an arm-twisting ally in Marguerita Grecco, the dean at Marymount Manhattan College. Shante showed her the contract, and the dean let her attend classes for free while pursuing the money.  "I told Dean Grecco that either I'm going to go here or go to the streets, so I need your help," Shante recalls. "She said, 'We're going to make them pay for this.'"  Grecco submitted and resubmitted the bills to the label, which finally agreed to honor the contract when Shante threatened to go public with the story.  Shante earned her doctorate in 2001, and launched an unconventional therapy practice focusing on urban African-Americans - a group traditionally reluctant to seek mental health help.

"People put such a taboo on therapy, they feel it means they're going crazy," she explained. "No, it doesn't. It just means you need someone else to talk to."     Shante often incorporates Hip-Hop music into her sessions, encouraging her clients to unleash their inner MC and shout out exactly what's on their mind.

"They can't really let loose and enjoy life," she said. "So I just let them unlock those doors."

Shante, 38, is also active in the community. She offers $5,000 college scholarships each semester to female rappers through the nonprofit Hip Hop Association. She also dispenses advice to young women in the music business via a MySpace page.  "I call it a warning service, so their dreams don't turn into nightmares," she said. Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons said Shante is a shining role model for the rap community. "Dr. Shante's life is inspiring," Simmons said. "She was a go-getter who rose from the struggle and went from hustling to teaching. She is a prime example that you can do anything, and everything is possible"...

ANONYMOUS MUSIC GUY???

"My name is Anonymous Music Guy. I do this for no personal gain or benefit of self. This is just a personal weekly view of the music industry. Please pass this on.

Let's face it, white people today have destroyed the mixtape scene. They have pilfered off of the black generation since the days of slavery, but now it's a new era. An era of musical slavery. Mixtapes were once an outlet for young people with musical energy to put out a product with out enduring the costs of putting out an album. Mixtapes were a way for DJ's to broadcast new and upcoming talent to the underground market with fans patiently waiting to see who is next to blow. Now it's nothing but a pure bootleg market, where non Black/Urban DJ's basically steal peoples albums and music and put them out solely for profit and reputation.

We have guys like The Evil Empire, The Empire, DJ Smallz, Trapaholics, Big Mike, DJ Drama and etc that are fucking the game to hell. These people have no urban roots. They never lived in a "hood" and likely never endured a real "struggle". They have no real care for this culture. All they care about is there fat white pockets getting bigger and bigger off of each new "nigger" that comes out. They don't break artist. They break artists banks. Literally and figuratively. They put out mixtapes with no names to identify themselves which is basically considered bootlegging. I even heard of one certain "DJ" having a "hacker" on his team who goes into peoples Gmail accounts to steal "exclusive" music. This one DJ recently took GRANDHUSTLE rap artist YOUNG DRO's new album and put it out on a mixtape..... WHAT KINDA SHIT IS THAT?
How could you profit off of someones hardwork you did not pay for? You didnt buy the beats. You did not cover the studio time so what makes you think you can go out and bootleg there whole album and someone be cool with that? What kind of shit is that? What has the game come to?

Then you have the supposed "Big Shots" like DJ Drama who give nothing back to the black community. But it makes sense since he is not* BLACK*. I erk at the sound of him saying "*NIGGA*" constantly. This guy has been supported by so many artists and in return to the community he charges outrageous prices to the people he supposedly supports. Homie does nothing but scream all over music, I don't know how that makes you an "icon" that deserves 20 thousand dollars to make a "mixtape". I'm sorry sir I'll pass. His last album did nothing and went by quickly *with good reason*. Go back up north. Good riddance.
The young black musician of today, with music dreams and major label aspirations has to hope and pray that one day the BWM (*Big White Man*) sitting in his chair will cut him a budget and give him the time of day. If he ever gets that time of day, it's very much short lived for the simple fact of the corruption placed in the music industry today. It has spiraled and regressed into a piece of shit where young black people will sell there souls for a little dollar. The white man who profits will never care about the damage that is done, I don't blame him. I blame the enslaved black youth for not waking up.

Don't be a slave to your music, be a owner!!!

Artists have totally devalued there music and self worth in the music world.
Is there any coming back?? better yet, going forward?
Call me racist, call me what you want but WHITE PEOPLE have destroyed mixtapes.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Music Guy"...

moshiiiiii!! (That's how they say hello in Japan)....Good day  to all again! Sorry I missed out on last week's newsletter but I took my first vacation in over 8 years and went to Japan to see family that I have never met in my entire life. Japan, to me, is  like Never Never land...an escape. I want to tell you guys all about it, the foods, the honor and tradition but I think I will will lay it  down in phases in the newsletters to come.

I just want to really lay emphasis on the following though, my past week's experiences really made me open my eyes in how lucky we are
here in the states as compared to other folks around the country. One thing we need to learn to do is really live! Carpe Diem man,  live today like there is no tomorrow because no one knows what may ever happen....that said, I want to say R.I.P to DJ AM. We lost another one to soon in the DJ community and may our other fallen soldiers in this community now watch over him up there.................

As I get re-acquainted with everything around me, jet lag and all,  there are a lot of things going on out here in NYC this week. 93.5 Drops the Beat and focuses on 93.5 KDAY FM

The landscape of Los Angeles radio has been ever changing over the last several years and the programming at 93.5 is taking an exciting turn for the better. “The Beat” will be dropped as focus is placed on the brand equity in KDAY and its deep musical roots.

"Los Angeles has been missing the west coast sound. By eliminating syndicated programming, KDAY can now focus on its strengths as a local, independent station that connects with the diverse culture that is Los Angeles. With a mix of the old school and the new music that is enjoyed today, I feel we have a unique and winning recipe." - Adrian (A.D.) Scott (Program Director/ Operations Manager)

93.5 KDAY was unveiled at the Nokia Theatre on Saturday August 15, with some of Hip-Hop's most iconic figures including: Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick, Dj Quik and Whodini. The sold out show attracted a diverse LA crowd of many races, and ages both young and old.

For More information on KDAY listen online & log on to:  www.935KDAY.com...

While L.A. gains a new station, L.A. loses a GREAT show on KXLU. After nearly 21 years, Mike Nardone & his longest running Hip-Hop show "We Came From Beyond" ended last Sunday night, August 30th. Congrats Mike & we'll miss ya homie...

Mark your calendars for what Oprah Winfrey has called "the most anticipated music interview of the decade"! On September 14th, the 24th season of the Oprah Winfrey Show will feature an interview with the one and only Whitney Houston!...

AND PEEP OUR UPDATED PHOTO PAGE...

Rap Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:

Jason-D (RadioBoise.org): "I had to flash it back this week. Sometimes it's just good to take a week off from what everyone is pushing and go back to what used to bang. It's cool to see the new supergroups coming together like Slaughterhouse (Royce Da 5'9", Joelle Ortiz, Crooked I, & Joe Budden) but you can't forget about D.I.T.C. (Big L, AG, Showbiz, Fat Joe, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, O.C., & Bucwild) or the lesser known Golden State Warriors (Xzibit, Ras Kass, & Saafir) both featured in the mix this week. Make it, sell it, recoup"...

Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "What's the deal people? Had another vacation last week but now I'm back. Went to a dope show, which had The Clipse and The Cool Kids in the building. The crowd was amped and neither group disappointed. The who's who of Detroit Hip Hop was in the standing room only crowd. Big shout to everyone who was there and for those who missed it!! Damn Damn Damn!!! Lol. So for more information about me DJ Chill Will go to www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...

Kazzeo (KHDC-CA): "So those of you who follow me on Twitter or are connected to me on myspace / facebook probably already know this past weekend had me pulling what's left of my hair out and screaming endless obscenities at the tv & computer. Those damn fruity San Fran 49'ers beat my Raiders 21 - 20. I don't know what the hell coach Cable was thinking when he decided to go for the two point conversion instead of tying the game with an extra point. Since I don't need any more heart palpitations I'm just gonna leave it at that.

It's with great shock and admiration that I send a shout out to my homie Mike Nardone from KXLU in Los Angeles. After 21 years on air, he has decided to hang up the headphones & turn off the mic on his "We Came From Beyond" show. I've known Mike since the day Is tared in radio and known of him even before that, all the way back to 1985 / 1986. See, Mike started on radio at a small high school station in Pebble Beach called KSPB. Back in the day during my high school years, the station had something called "Super Soul Sunday" where they mix R & B and Hip Hop all day long. You'd hear Guy followed by EPMD followed by E.U. mixed with Ice T. It was a great thing. Then Mike headed for LA and started at KXLU. Mike has always been a genuine dude and had one of the best, most true to the essence Hip Hop shows I've ever heard. I feel bad for Hip Hop lovers in LA because, after this Sunday night (Aug. 31), there's gonna be a huge hole in the scene. I just want wish Mike and his family all the best in whatever comes next and say thank you bro for all the great years on air as well as the hook up with the various labels you've worked for over the years. Keep in touch brother"...

Nesto (WODU-VA): "What's up people? Another week has gone by, school is startng up soon, and the sun is setting a little earlier everyday. I can't say I'm not mad about that either. I'm ready for the cold weather and earlier dark nights. Not that I don't like the summer, but I'm in a location that is absolutely boring, and can't wait to get the hell out of dodge. On another note I've been bumping two mixtapes recently. The best of the Roots and the best of Ski-Beats. The DJs escape me right now, but you can find them online. Good stuff"...

Edgie Kokoski (WUNH-NH): "For an album called "The Blueprint 3", I'm not sure why Jay-Z made his new album cover a pasty white shade with red stripes. And what's with the cover art? It's like the Philadelphia Philharmonic's yard sale. And what's with the 9/11 release date? It's a Friday this year, not a Tuesday. Save the drama, Jay. As we reflect on eight years since the national tragedy, we will also reflect on the last time Jay-Z made a dope album worth buying. It was also 9/11/01.
I have finally broken the evil chain of abuse. Sorry XXL, I'm not renewing to get (9) issues of your increasingly crappy magazine for $19.95. It was (12) issues for $12.00 when it used to be good. For $19.95 I can get (77) issues of Murder Dog. Assuming that they still publish it. But there's no hurry as I'm still enjoying the circa 1997 issue of Rap Pages that I found in my desk at the station the other day. Did you know that Heavy D's new album "Waterbed Hev" is dropping soon? That's one bed I want to be in.
I've heard (4) tracks off "Only Built For Cuban Linx II" and I've liked all (4). Do I dare to dream?
I was reading a press release for Warren G's new album "The G-Files". It boasts that Warren G has sold over 5 million records. It sounds impressive, but I'm pretty sure that "Regulate...G Funk Era" sold nearly 5 million and there are four other Warren G albums after that for sale at amazon.com. Let's keep in mind that Lauryn Hill and Vanilla Ice each sold 10 million records. But look at me being the naysayer. In all seriousness, I'm certain that "The G-Files" will be as successful as "Garth Brooks In The Life of Chris Gaines"...
