What's
Upper?
This
was meanto to be printed in my "WHAT'S UPPER"
section of NASTY NEWS but this will be
this week's lead story. It's Edgie Kokoski's
farewell letter to RAP ATTACK & WUNH.
Edgie has been a dedicated reporter for many years. His
playlists' are always on time, his weekly news updates
have been fun & entertaining to read, his participation
on our RAP ATTACK CONF CALLS & PICKS
have been on point & overall he's become a great
friend & I'm gonna miss this guy. One of the hardest
part of my job through the past 25 years has been
saying, "GOOD BYE" to my reporters who all grow up &
move on with their life. Edgie repped Hip-Hop on the
most positive note & WUNH must be proud to have a kat
like him reppin' their station call letters. Thank you
Edgie for all your LOVE & SUPPORT homie. Keep in touch
aiight!:
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH):
"Dear Friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you news that
I have decided to retire from radio effective 09/09/09.
Making this decision has been difficult, and I have
struggled with it for over a year. It is a bittersweet
decision. I have hosted my program "The Mothership
Connection" for 11.5 years and my exit will mean the
conclusion to its 18 year run. To my knowledge, it has
been the longest continuously running Hip-Hop program in
New England. I love Hip-Hop music, and I love sharing it
with people. Hosting my program has given me some of the
best memories and biggest thrills of my life. This past
year, I have felt that being a radio DJ has become more
work than fun for me and that is how I know it is time
to stop. I have grown weary of the weekly grind of
hosting a live program and have grown increasingly
frustrated with the embattled hip hop music industry and
its continuously waning support for college radio. I've
reached a point in my life where I want to focus more
time and energy on my loved ones and career. The only
way for me to do that is to lighten my burden in other
areas. I realized one day in July that stopping was
going to be difficult no matter when I made the
decision. By leaving now, I'm hoping to give my station
a chance to get a new Hip-Hop program off the ground
without much delay as the new school year commences. As
my 30th birthday approaches in a few weeks, I'm hoping
to start a new chapter of my life and take on new
challenges.
My chart this week will be my last. As of this writing,
there is no one at WUNH 91.3 FM to fill my spot.
I don't think that the vacancy will last long. I've left
contact information with our General Manager so
that if someone does continue hip hop programming at our
station, I can link them up with all of you. I hope that
you will continue to send any physical product to our
station as I'm certain that our Music Director
will be reviewing all material until a successor is
found.
I humbly ask that you consider keeping this email
address:
edgiek@hotmail.com
as part of your mp3 servicing list. I
may continue to dabble in mixtapes or hip hop writing,
and would appreciate the chance to hear new material
from artists that you are working with. As you know, I
love to laud what is great about Hip-Hop and poke fun at
what isn't, and I'm hoping to "stay in the loop" as much
as possible as I find another outlet for my creativity.
I invite you to listen to the webcast of my last program
at
www.wunh.org
on Wednesday 09/09/09 at 8pm EST. Click on
"Schedule/Listen", and then go to Wednesday night and
click on "The Mothership Connection". The broadcast will
be posted for one week if you can't check it out live.
You can download the broadcast using passcode "1972".
I'm going to be playing some of my favorite records from
my time on the show and some clips of the most
interesting interviews that I conducted.
Thank you for your years of support. I'll be back at you
one last time next week with some final parting
remarks!"...

Warner Music Group
announced that Executive Vice President Kevin Liles
has decided to leave his day-to-day role at the company
to pursue his own entrepreneurial opportunities. He will
maintain a consulting relationship with the company. In
making the announcement, WMG Chairman and CEO,
Edgar Bronfman, Jr., said, "Kevin Liles is an
exceptional executive and one of the most dynamically
creative individuals in the industry. During his tenure
at WMG, he helped to design and implement our
industry-leading artist services strategy that in just a
few years is already producing meaningful results. With
WMG now positioned for future growth, Kevin is following
his heart. His presence will be missed in 75 Rock."
Lyor
Cohen,
WMG's Vice Chairman and Chairman and
CEO, Recorded Music - Americas and the UK,
said, "Kevin and I have worked together since the day he
joined Def Jam as an intern 18 years ago. He has
become a trusted friend, a brilliant executive and an
incredible business partner. Together, we have built
companies, signed and developed fantastically talented
artists, and brought some outstanding music to the
world. Even though Kevin's chosen to pursue a new
challenge, we'll continue to work together in many
aspects of the entertainment industry. I'm so excited to
see what's next for Kev, and he takes with him all my
love and respect."
Liles said, "In the past couple weeks I've made one of
the most important decisions of my life -- to depart the
Warner Music Group in order to focus more on new
entrepreneurial endeavors in talent management,
entertainment, media and my personal philanthropic and
political passions. I am thankful for the opportunities
that Edgar and Lyor have given me, most recently in
entrusting me with driving the company's global artist
services strategy, which is redefining the way labels
and artists work together. My work here is now complete
and I'm excited about the next chapter of my life"...

Jay-Z's Blueprint Moved Up To Tuesday Release
The
release date for Jay-Z's highly
anticipated album The Blueprint 3 has been
shuffled due to bootlegging and leaks on the Internet.
The new album will now be released this Tuesday
(September 8) as opposed to the original date of Friday,
September 11.
Over the past two week, songs from The Blueprint 3
- mainly those produced by Timbaland - landed on
net.
More recently, the entire album was leaked, prompting
Jay-Z to address the issue in an interview.
"I may be the most bootlegged artist in history," Jay-Z
told MTV News during a press conference.
"It’s a preview. I’m excited for people to hear the
album. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done, so enjoy
it."
Jay-Z's benefit concert supporting the New York Police
and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund will
continue as planned on September 11...

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ
Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "What's up Fam? Got
good news and bad news. Frst the good news, Run DMC
just got a street in Hollis, Queens named after them
and Jam Master Jay. Long time coming. Also
tonight Jedi Mind Tricks with be rocking the
stage at St. Andrews Hall with special guest MC
Esoteric. For the bad news, We had the untimely
death of DJ AM this past week in NYC. And people
have been giving their opinion on why it happen and what
not. But at the end of the day, there was a life lost
and we should all learn from it. Another sad note was
Mike Nardone calling it quits at KXLU after
two decades of blessing us over the airwaves. For more
information about me DJ Chill Will go to
www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...
DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver, BC): "Back again! We
had to take a brief hiatus on account of my travels to
connect and touch it down in the T-Dot. Shouts to all
the great people meet and built with; seriously too many
to name but once again thanks!
We are back and better than ever though! We were joined
live in studio by Seattle's own Khingz. As his
website says, "if punk rock and blues met in a dark
cigarette smoke hidden speak easy in Gotham City and
overwhelmed by jazz induced lust bore a child they
raised in a ghetto to an alternative sound track you’d
get Khingz." This is the truth, as Khingz brings passion
and an honest, grassroots style every time he touches
the microphone. He also got into an INSANE marathon
freestyle, so check out the podcast because you don't
want to miss out on it! Don't forget to hit up his
website,
www.Khingz.com.
The birthday boy, Vancity's Nicest, Jay Kin also
slid into the studio to kick it with us. He also kicked
a crazy birthday freestyle and chopped it up with us
about what was next for the coast-to-coast MC. Check him
out at
www.MySpace.com/JayKin for show dates,
videos and all the info you need! Don't forget to pick
up a copy of "On The Humble" at Dipt, Beatstreet
Records and online!
Our weekly Emotionz segment was back on track this week
as the man running Vancity's longest standing HipHop
night joined us on the phone to discuss the most recent
Rent Money battle, Snak The Ripper's Sex Machine
album release party, and what's next for Monday Night
Live at The Modern! Hit him up at
www.MySpace.com/Emotionz for all the
latest on Monday Night Live, tour dates and more!

Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA): "Just a heads up, I won't be sending
out a playlist next week since I'll be on vacation in an
undisclosed location. I'm not saying where I'll be
because there have been way too many paparazzi following
me and I can't take it anymore. The only clue I'll give
is that wherever it may be that I'm going, I'm driving.
So you do the math. Kazzeo out!"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA): "What's up
people? Aight September is here, and cooler weather is
right around the corner. I have to say I am a fan of the
fall season. Cooler temps, no need for AC, and no need
for cutting the yard. On a sad note the DJ community
lost another one last week. RIP DJ AM. Hopefully,
his death will shed light on the fight of drug abuse.
It's not confirmed yet that drugs were the cause of his
death, but it's not looking good that drugs won't be the
cause. I've seen many people over the years that were
super talented and they got mixed up with drugs and no
one ever got to see their talents. I'm not trying to
preach to anyone, but seriously, stay off them drugs.
Not worth it"...
Nate
Abney
(WKDU-PA): "Well had an interesting week in
Florida. A lot of rest and relaxation. Avoided a storm
and got to just breath a little. It is September and
time is just flying. Before you know it the end of the
year will be here. My Phillies look ok heading
into the playoffs, and the Eagles fans did not
let me down with the we want Vick cheers. Some
shows are coming up and maybe I might check out a few
here and there"...
