What's
Upper?
I really
enjoyed this years' "MTV VMA Awards" show.
Both Madonna & Janet did a memorable
tribute to Michael Jackson & seeing the movie
trailer to "This Is It" was awesome! I can't wait till
October 28 (a day after my son's b'day) for the
theatrical release. Now Kanye West was buggin'
out & I just lost respect for Kanye for his actions.
When
Taylor Swift won Best Female Video for 'You
Belong With Me,' Kanye jumped onstage,
grabbed the mic from the country singer's hands and did
what he does best. And what was up with Lil Mama
bum rushing the stage at the end of Jay-Z's &
Alicia Keyes performance? This isn't "ABDC" Lil
Mama...

Warner
Music Group
announced that Executive Vice President Kevin Liles
has decided to leave his day-to-day role at the company
to pursue his own entrepreneurial opportunities. He will
maintain a consulting relationship with the company. In
making the announcement, WMG Chairman and CEO,
Edgar Bronfman, Jr., said, "Kevin Liles is an
exceptional executive and one of the most dynamically
creative individuals in the industry. During his tenure
at WMG, he helped to design and implement our
industry-leading artist services strategy that in just a
few years is already producing meaningful results. With
WMG now positioned for future growth, Kevin is following
his heart. His presence will be missed in 75 Rock."
Lyor
Cohen, WMG's Vice Chairman and Chairman
and CEO, Recorded Music - Americas and
the UK, said, "Kevin and I have worked together since
the day he joined Def Jam as an intern 18 years
ago. He has become a trusted friend, a brilliant
executive and an incredible business partner. Together,
we have built companies, signed and developed
fantastically talented artists, and brought some
outstanding music to the world. Even though Kevin's
chosen to pursue a new challenge, we'll continue to work
together in many aspects of the entertainment industry.
I'm so excited to see what's next for Kev, and he takes
with him all my love and respect."
Liles
said, "In the past couple weeks I've made one of the
most important decisions of my life -- to depart the
Warner Music Group in order to focus more on new
entrepreneurial endeavors in talent management,
entertainment, media and my personal philanthropic and
political passions. I am thankful for the opportunities
that Edgar and Lyor have given me, most recently in
entrusting me with driving the company's global artist
services strategy, which is redefining the way labels
and artists work together. My work here is now complete
and I'm excited about the next chapter of my life"...

WHAT'S
BLAZIN' WITH BLAZE WONG? by: BLAZE WONG:
Greetings all DJs and industry folks! So, what do you
think about them VMAs? Pretty exciting I might
say and will leave it at that. Been pretty busy lately
as we are getting projects left and right for us to work
in mix show land. One of them being an LL Cool J
song in promotion of his role on the upcoming NCIS
LA....the song is not bad at all and can be downloaded
on
www.1200squad.com.
Besides that, for those that did get a chance to peek at
the VMAs, you would notice Wale received a lot of
shine on it! Great move, great look and shouts out to
Wale as this dude has a great potential to rise in the
ranks of Hip-Hop! We are working hard on getting Wale
out there and exposed on radio world and last night just
made it a bit easier for me to talk him up. So let's
give as much love on the airwaves to him.... Last note -
I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of DJs in
my many years in this game and have the honor and
privilege to watch one DJ that I can say - share a
friendship as well as a good business relationship with.
Shouts to DJ Neil Armstrong! I've seen and
witnessed him through his 5th Platoon Days, rock
out small venues, deliver me his mixtapes keeping me up
to date, travel the nation doing gigs, and over the past
couple years...become Jay-Z's tour DJ with the
Roc Boys traveling state to state, city to city and
country to country. This past week and in a matter of
2-3 days, Neil has traveled via private jet from
Manchester, to NYC (for the VMAs) and out the same night
to LA for Leno! WOW! It just makes one think that
yes, hard work does pay off! Keep grinding Neil! I, and
im sure many, only wish they have and can share your
opportunity. My hats off to you! Be safe brother and see
you soon!
This week's "Triple Freshness" needs a cholesterol pill
to chase down with because I feel a bit fattened (or is
it phattened) by it....yuck yuck yuck (ok i'll stick
with my day job):
1. Wale
f. Jazmine Sullivan "WORLD TOUR" Interscope Records
2. Drake f. Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem "FOREVER"
Interscope Records
3. Rakim "Holy Are You" Ra Records / Tuscan Villa / SMC
Records

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
Edgie
Kokoski
(WUNH-NH): "Wow, I can't believe that I am
sitting here writing up my final chart of my radio
career. I remember when I used to sit in my office at
WUNH in front of a stack of "Add" sheets and then
fax my chart out. It was like one step up from a quill
pen and the Pony Express. How times have changed. In
2009, I think that some things are better about college
radio, and some things are worse. But that's life. It's
the same mixture of sadness and excitement that I feel
as I did my final broadcast of my program "The
Mothership Connection" last Wednesday evening.
Being in the music/radio business has allowed me to do
incredible things and forge so many priceless memories.
How else could I have:
1. Stood in D&D Studios with DJ Premier
2. Sat shoulder to shoulder with hip hop legends like
Chuck D and Sway and interviewed them
3. Chatted casually with Guru twice in one day; first at
a college and then later on at his show. I went into the
bathroom to take a leak and found him practicing his set
in the mirror. Crazy...
4. Penned articles for Urban Network Magazine, and be
nominated for their 2001 "DJ of the Year" award
5. Stepped into a real recording booth for the first
time to create a skit with Doujah Raze for his debut
album
6. Served on the Rap Attack Conference Call panel with a
handful of the greatest college radio DJs in the US and
Canada and have the chance to connect with so many
underground and famous artists (we chatted with Rakim
two weeks ago, unbelievable)
But best of all, I got the chance to work with so many
people like you. People who really respect, represent,
and cherish real Hip-Hop music. Very few people get rich
in the underground Hip-Hop radio game. Everyone who I
send this chart to works in this business because they
love the music and are dedicated to sharing it with
people.
I want to say THANK YOU to each of you for
supporting what I have done over the past 11.5 years. I
could not have accomplished what I did without your
help. I am truly indebted for this opportunity that I
have been given, and I hope that each of you is
successful in reaching your own goals within this
business or elsewhere.
I hope that this is not the end of our relationship. I
plan to keep my name in the music/entertainment game
somehow. I have too much trash to talk to stop
completely! Hit me up any time at this email (edgiek@hotmail.com)
or on my mobile (603-512-7283). Let me know what moves
you are making, so that I can possibly ride on your coat
tails. Or copy your idea. Whatever is easier and more
profitable for me.
In all seriousness, I am humbled to be here today. You
all have been an unmeasurable aid to my station and my
personal achievement. I am extremely grateful. Good luck
to you, and keep spinning that real underground
Hip-Hop"...
DJ

VH1's "Top 100 Hip-Hop" songs of all time, I

myself in a room, and really think of what I think is

(WKDU-Philly): "It is getting even closer to
fall. The Phils are holding on. Penn State
looks good, and the Eagles are ready to crush the
Panthers week 1. Not a whole lot to talk about
besides some people being mad that our president is
trying to encourage the youth"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA):
"What's up people? September is here and college
football was in full effect last weekend. My school
ODU won their first home opener, and first football
game in 69 years. Alabama beat Virginia Tech,
and William & Mary beat UVA.
I just read that Edgie is leaving the airways and
I must say I'm a little surprised. I know people get to
that point where they need to make a change, but I'm
surprised because I didn't expect to hear my homie
hanging up the mic. So that makes 2 radio jocks this
year that have decided to hang up the mic that were
mainstays in their markets and in the college radio
scene. Big ups to the homies Edgie and Mike Nardone"...
