What's
Upper?
I just
got the sad news that Mr Magic (see photo above)
has passed away on October 2, 2009 from a heart attack.
Mr Magic has been my mentor & his legendary Hip-Hop show
"RAP ATTACK" on NY's WBLS is THE
show that played a BIG influence on my first Hip-Hop
show on Seattle's 1250 KFOX back in the 80's,
including the name for my Hip-Hop show "KCMU RAP
ATTACK" from the 90's to late 2000 & now with
www.RapAttackLives.com.
Thank
you Mr Magic for being such a positive influence in my
Radio & Hip-Hop career. I owe a lot of my success to you
because as a teenager I wanted to be just like you.
Here's what DJ Premier says about the legendary,
"MR. MAGIC":
I WANT
TO SEND OUT THE UTMOST RESPECT AND CONDOLENCES TO THE
MEMORY OF JOHN RIVAS----aka MR. MAGIC
HE PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING OF A HEART ATTACK.....
TRUE HIP HOP HEADS KNOW THAT HIS HISTORY IS SO LONG
DUE TO HIM BEING THE FIRST RAP MIXSHOW TO EVER BE ON
COMMERCIAL RADIO ON NEW YORK'S WBLS--(107.5) WITH MARLEY
MARL AND FLY TY IN 1982-1984.......THEN WENT ON TO WHBI
IN OCTOBER OF 1984 AND THEN
BACK TO WBLS in 1985 and WDAS in Philly SIMULTANEOUSLY
HE PAVED THE WAY FOR ALL RADIO STATIONS THAT EVER DID
MIXSHOWS AND ALSO SPARKED THE CAREER OF BOOGIE DOWN
PRODUCTIONS DUE TO THE DISS HE SHOWED WHEN THEY CAME TO
SHOP THEIR DEMO TO HIM AND WAS TURNED AWAY WHICH THEN
SPARKED "SOUTH BRONX" AND "THE BRIDGE IS OVER".......
HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS DIRECT AND SARCASTIC ATTITUDE ON
THE AIR AND EVERY ARTIST WANTED HIS APPROVAL WHEN IT
CAME TO BREAKING NEW RECORDS........HE EVEN HAD SONGS
DEDICATED TO HIM BY THE LEGENDARY WHODINI--("MR. MAGIC'S
WAND") WHICH WAS SURPRISINGLY PRODUCED BY ONE OF MY
FAVORITE ARTISTS THOMAS DOLBY.......
SHOUTS OUT TO MARLEY MARL AND FLY TY FOR THE CORRECT
INFORMATION ON THIS......
REST IN PEACE MR. MAGIC.............DJ PREMIER
According to reports, legendary DJ
Mr.
Magic died of a heart attack. Though few
details are known about his death, his life was widely
celebrated; he was one of hip hop's most influential
characters in the 1980's.
The DJ, born John Rivas, was the first to helm an
exclusive rap mix show on a major station. His show,
"Rap Attack," began airing on WBLS in NYC in
1983. Magic hosted the show, with
Marley Marl as his DJ, ruling the
airwaves for most of the 80's. Magic went on to become a
producer and performer in his own right, working with
the
Force MD's on 'Let Me Love You,' and
'Forgive Me Girl,' and releasing a popular compilation
series based on his show, 'Mr. Magic's Rap Attack.'
He was the inspiration for Marley Marl's legendary crew,
The
Juice Crew, which featured newcomers
Kool G Rap,
Big
Daddy Kane,
Biz
Markie and
Roxanne Shanté, and was inspired by
Magic's alias, "Sir Juice."
Magic's career came full circle when, 20 years after he
hosted rap's first major radio show, he was picked to
host old school rap station "Wildstyle" on the hugely
successful video game 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.'
Magic was forever immortalized in
Biggie Smalls' "Juicy," when he spit,
"Every Saturday, "Rap Attack"/Mr. Magic, Marley Marl."
He was also referenced by
Nas,
2Pac and many others, including
Whodini, who dedicated "Magic's Wand" to
him.
Mr. Magic was truly the voice of Hip-Hop for an entire
generation of fans, for whom the radio was the only
place to hear the music. He will be missed...

Rakim
will
release his long awaited new album The Seventh Seal on
November 17, 2009. Guest artists include Busta
Rhymes, Jadakiss, Maino, Tracey Horton, IQ,
Styles P, and others, including Destiny Griffin,
Rakim’s own daughter. The artist’s Ra Records
shares the imprint in a joint venture with Tuscan
Villa and SMC Recordings and is distributed
through Fontana/Universal Music Group.
Since
its release, the album’s lead single “Holy Are You” has
won praise from critics and fans alike. USA Today
states, “The God MC previews his long-awaited The
Seventh Seal with a lyrically adept reminder of how he
earned the name,” with Billboard proclaiming
“Rakim is in top form, richly merging self-mythologizing
reflections on his legacy with religious imagery.”
His
first full album of new material in almost a decade, The
Seventh Seal is Rakim’s contemporary observation of the
Hip-Hop culture he helped define. While staying loyal to
his New York roots, Rakim has created a body of work
that encompasses the very best of regional, underground
and mainstream styles that are reformed and delivered
through his intricate lyricism and the seemingly
effortless flow for which he is revered. He has enlisted
a slew of production talent including Needlz, Nottz,
Jake One, Nick Wiz, Ty Fiffe and more on the album’s
well-rounded tracks.
The
artist states, “The Seventh Seal is my own revelation…my
way of taking the best of what Hip-Hop has to offer,
what we as a culture and a community have to offer,
putting my stamp on it and leading us forward while
constantly respecting what we’ve already accomplished.
When you’ve been blessed with a career like mine, you
develop a deep relationship with the music, and that
love is recognized by the true heads that share it with
you. You’ll see us keep building as we break through
each Seal…showing the best of what I can do in many
forms, bringing the energy and having fun, but first I’m
laying that foundation and give my longtime fans the
conscious fire they expect.”
ABOUT
RAKIM ALLAH:
Universally referenced as one of the Masters of the
Microphone and an influence and inspiration to his peers
and followers alike, Rakim first exploded onto the scene
with the release of iconic Eric B. is President
in 1986 with long time collaborator Eric B. The single
marked a turning point in the Rap world – raising the
bar for future emcees and revolutionizing the way rhymes
are delivered. Rakim’s intricately, intellectual lyrics
draw their force from his worldly experience, inner
faith and progressive contemplation, fueled by a deep
understanding of not just Hip-Hop, but also the Jazz and
R&B influences that have surrounded his family since his
youth. †Rakim’s recordings – including the all-time
classics, Paid In Full, Follow the Leader and The 18th
Letter - have sold in the multi-millions worldwide.
†Billboard, Rolling Stone, MTV and a host of
others consistently refer to Paid in Full as “the
greatest Hip-Hop album of all time” – a claim often
repeated in audience polls. The Seventh Seal marks the
first album under his own imprint, Ra Records, allowing
a true freedom in creative control unparalleled since
his monumental first recordings.

DEATH
ROW TAKES SNOOP DOGGY DOGG OFF THE LEASH!
On
October 13, 2009, WIDEawake Entertainment Group
will release Snoop Dogg's The Lost Sessions
Volume 1, containing previously unreleased songs during
his 1992-1997 years with Death Row Records.
"We are
seeing historic enthusiasm for the Death Row catalogue
across all types of our sales accounts and media outlets
in North America," commented WIDEawake / Death Row CEO
Lara Lavi. "We are grateful to fans and retailers
everywhere for the incredible launch of WIDEawake and
look forward to working with them in our upcoming
release schedule."
Iconic
in stature and in essence, Cordozar Calvin Broadus,
Jr. (or Snoop Dogg) has carved out a permanent place
in musical history. Undeniably, the rapper, producer,
actor, entrepreneur, coach, husband and father, has
performed the most unique balancing act that hip hop has
ever witnessed. Never short on vision, drive or
ambition, the sharp talking wordsworth has managed to
redefine and reinvent himself over the course of his
fifteen year career, each time revealing a distinctive
cache from the depths within. His rhythmic cadences are
classic in nature and his demeanor is as laid back and
effortless as the brand extensions he has created for
himself. Signing with Death Row in 1992 Snoop's
"Doggystyle" and The Doggfather" has sold over 7 million
copies around the world, and still places on the
American and Canadian Hip Hop Album Chart to this day.
Lavi is
equally enthusiastic over the new business model for the
label, which includes a stronger tie-in with fans and
artists. "There is a lot to celebrate. As we kick-off
this release, we are also determined to raise the bar
for royalty statements and being honest in this industry
with all artists -- past and future. Snoop has done so
much for both Death Row Records and the West Coast by
spawning such artists as Tha Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, and
The LBC Crew. We hope this serves him the justice he
rightfully deserves."
"The
Lost Sessions Volume 1". contains classic unheard gems
such as "Eat A D*ck", "Caught Up", and "Fallin' Asleep
On Death Row".
Other
guests on "The Lost Sessions Volume 1" include The
Lady of Rage, Tha Dogg Pound, Bad Azz, and Tray
Deee. An exclusive version for Best Buy/Napster

A
MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
I just
finished laying out my plan for health reform at a joint
session of Congress. Now, I'm writing directly to you
because what happens next is critical -- and I need your
help.
Change this big will not happen because I ask for it. It
can only come when the nation demands it. Congress knows
where I stand. Now they need to hear from you.
Add your voice: Ask your representatives to support my
plan for real health reform in 2009:
http://my.barackobama.com/SupportReform
The heart of my plan is simple: bring stability and
security to Americans who already have health insurance,
guarantee affordable coverage for those who don't, and
rein in the cost of health care.
Tonight, I offered a specific plan for how to make it
happen. I incorporated the best ideas from Democrats and
Republicans to create a plan that's bold, practical, and
represents the broad consensus of the American people.
We've come closer to real health reform in the last few
months than we have in the last 60 years. But those who
profit from the status quo -- and those who put partisan
advantage above all else -- will fight us every inch of
the way.
We do not seek that fight, but we will not shrink from
it. The stakes are too high to let scare tactics cloud
the debate, or to allow partisan bickering to block the
path. Your voice, right now, is essential.
See my full plan and call on your representatives to
support it:
http://my.barackobama.com/SupportReform
Ours is not the first generation to understand the dire
need for health reform. And I am not the first President
to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the
last.
Thank
you,
President Barack Obama
Atlanta
rap legends Goodie Mob reunited for a one time
special performance in their hometown billed "Remember
Atlanta." Cee-Lo, T-Mud, Big Gipp and
Khujo, draped in blood-red clothing, ran through
their catalog of hits over the years, including smash
hits "Cell Therapy," "Soul Food," Beautiful Skin" and
much more." RAP ATTACK's own, DJ Jay
Force from ATL's WRFG was there & here's what
went down:
"I was
hanging out in the Castellberry Hill area of Atlanta
speaking with my friend, promoter Jabari Graham,
about how Atlanta has changed so much. Jabari is one of
the most successful promoters in Atlanta because he
tends to have a good sense of timing in booking the
right acts at the right time. Before Drake really
blew up we had spoke at length about how Drake is gonna
be that next guy the public would be checking for.
Jabari & his partners took at advantage of the
opportunity to book Drake right before he blew up & the
sold out show actually happened right as Drake was
peaking in popularity. This particular night we were
talking about how Goodie Mob was getting back
together & how significant it was to Atlanta's Hip Hop &
overall usical history for them to be doing so. Would
Atlanta fans still be checking for Goodie Mob after an
almost decade long hiatus? We knew the answer to that.
That night we discussed various media strategies to make
sure that September 19th 2009 would be a historical one
& it truly was historical for Atlanta, southern rap
fans, & fans of quality Hip-Hop music overall.
I arrived at Masquerade Music Park a little late due to
the massive amounts of people that showed up for Goodie
Mob's Reunion Show in Atlanta. It felt like Goodie Mob &
the Dungeon Family organization had the whole
city buzzing despite having not released an album
collectively since 1999's "World Party". It had been
raining in Atlanta in recent days & I'm sure many people
didn't know what the turnout would be like especially
since black people & rain don't exactly work together
for outdoor concerts. **Rimshot** Despite the periods of
rain over 4,500 fans descended on the outdoor concert
venue for the return of one of the most important
Hip-Hop groups in southern based Hip-Hop. I can only
imagine how many people would have showed up to the
venue had the weather NOT been less than perfect, but it
was an amazing sight to see nonetheless.
Goodie Mob took the stage to the theme from the movie
Rocky dressed in solid crimson colors to a raucous &
at times lengthy period of applause. Utilizing a live
band that included my future fiancee DJ Princess Cut
on the turntables, they proceeded to rock for about
an hour long peformance on stage. The first song they
rocked was "Goodie Bag" from their classic album "Soul
Food" before launching into the rest of their catalog of
hits & even tweaking a few of those for the live
performance. At one point in the show Cee-Lo sung
at medley from Spandau Ballet's hit "True" & then
spinning into lyrics from one of the Goodie Mob's
classics over the instrumentation from that song. At one
point during the show Cee-Lo jumped into singing his hit
single "Crazy" as one 1/2 of Gnarls Barkley to
taking back to the old school R&B covering Frankie
Beverly & Maze's "Before I Let Go". The rest of the
night saw special guests of the Dungeon Family take the
stage with them like Backbone & Sleepy Brown.
At one point Big Boi from Outkast came out
on stage & the crowd was anticipating Andre 3000
to make an appearance although he was a no show & the
rumor has it that he was actually supposed to make an
appearance. Despite Andre 3000 being of the primary
members of the Dungeon Family missing from September
19th's reunion concert for the Goodie Mob, the crowd
made it known who they were really there for. It was a
great night in Atlanta's musical history & I'm proud to
say I was a part of it"...
DJ
Eclipse "The Halftime Show" Roc Raida Tribute
"Last
Sunday night I threw together a short Roc Raida
tribute set at the beginning of my Sirius show.
On Monday night Premier and I held our monthly
"Like They Used To Say" party at APT which we dedicated
to Roc Raida and were able to raise over $4,000 for his
family. On Wednesday night I wanted to do a proper
tribute show so I contemplated on what to do. As I
compiled every song I could that Raida was featured on
(production or scratches) I thought it would be better
to reach out to his friends and get their take on what
the man meant to them. What started out as a dozen or so
people that I intended to talk to snowballed into phone
call after phone call of friends wanting to share
stories. Please forgive me if I left out someone's name
(or mispelled), but following is a list of who called or
showed up at station (no particular order): Boogie
Blind, Daddy Dog, Roli Rho, Kuttin Kandi, Riz, JS-1,
Jab, Sugar Cuts, Neil Armstrong, Fat Fingaz, Q-Bert,
Mixmaster Mike, A-Trak, J-Rocc, Babu, Rhettmatic,
Scratch, Revolution, Rahzel, Bobbito, A.G., Lord
Finesse, Dr. Butcher, Vin Roc, DJ Grouch, Freestyle,
Spictakular, Shortkut, Supreme and Tame One.
We ended up going an hour longer then we should have. In
between calls I found some old cassette tapes of radio
show appearances by the X-Men. I hope you enjoy
listening to the show as much as I did. Thanks to the
whole Halftime crew for making this run smooth;
Skizz, Petey Cologne and Marz One. To
everyone that showed up or called in....I love you all.
R.I.P. Grand Master Roc Raida. We're going to
miss you, Eclipse

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ
Jason-D (RadioBoise.org): "The reality of
missing CMJ this year is setting in as I
begin to receive invites to the showcases. Even though
it looks slower than previous years, I still can't help
being bummed out about missing my annual trip to NYC.
This is my first miss in something like 5 years.
Unfortunately, I just couldn't swing it financially.
Anybody remember the days when the major labels used to
sponsor college DJ's to attend music conferences? I
remember this one time many years ago that a major label
announced they would be having a contest to give away
badges to the Hits convention in Palm
Springs. I had a jump on many people because we used
computers at work and the contest would be announced
during the day. The contest was to complete the line
(lyrics) of some new record the label had just sent. I
instantly called wifey and she put the record on. I had
my submission in within minutes and knew I was good to
go. I tried like hell to get Kazzeo on the phone
to tell him to get his answer in but I couldn't reach
him. Running out of ideas, I pulled up Yahoo mail
and decided to see if I could hack his email. The first
password I tried worked. It was "Kazzeo". LMAO. In any
case, he "won" a free badge too and we made it to Palm
Springs"...
DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver): "We got our started by
jumping into a Double Shot from Skyzoo's first
studio album, "The Salvation". As is the case with most
Duck Down Records releases, this album is a
banger and could not have come too soon. It's good to
see a 10-year Hip-Hop veteran finally getting an LP out
there so do not sleep on it!
We were then joined one third of Vancity's own,
Swollen Members, Prevail. The trio are back
on the scene, doing big things worldwide and burning up
the airwaves with their lead single, "Warrior" featuring
Tre Nyce, from their new album, "Armed To The Teeth".
Prevail discussed why it's important to keep your ear to
the street, collaborations and much more! Hit up the
group at www.SwollenMembers.com to keep up with all the
latest moves they're making!
Another Vancity resident, Heatwave and his crew came
through the studio to chop it up with the URP.
Heatwave's got the mixtape out, "Hotter Than July" out
now so make sure you check that out! Jay Kin even called
in to chat up his long-time friend! Check out the
interview and the subsequent cypher the gang got into,
and hit up Heatwave at
www.MySpace.com/HeatwaveTeam and
www.Killawattrecords.com for everything
you need to know about the team!"...
Nate
Abney
(WKDU-PA):
"Not enough time to talk about this week's event. My
Phils have one game left to clinch the NL EAST and
get back to defending the title like John Cena at
Hell in a CELL( I hope he beats Randy Orton).
McNabb will be back after the bye and I won't talk
about Penn State this week. CMJ is
close maybe I'll make it this year maybe not we'll see.
Till then I'm gearing up for another parade down Broad
Street"...
Chill
Will
(WCBN-MI):
"What's up people? Had a great week on the show with
some new bangers and people fiendin for more. Gotcha
this Saturday for sure with some new Ghostface,
Raekwon and been diggin in the crates for some
classics. Then rocked over at the Eclipz Lounge inside
the Greektown Casino. Lots of celebs in the building who
will remain name less(cause they asked)Lol!!! Good to
see all of them rocking to the music and having a good
time. Then Monday Immortal Technique blessed the
Blind Pig with a dope show as usual. Dude puts in work
and is a beast on the mic. For more information about me
DJ Chill Will go to
www.myspace.com/djchillwill734...
Kazzeo
(KHDC-CA): "Another week, another horrible
showing from Oakland Raiders. I was actually at
the game and saw firsthand how much of a loser
Jamarcus Russell is. About a year ago I put up a
video on Youtube talking about this idiot and how
he needed to go. A lot of people commented and bashed me
for not knowing what what I was talking bout. Oh really?
Well here we are a year later and now everyone feels the
way I do about this guy. Overpaid idiot. I talked to a
bunch of fans after the game and the videos will posted
later this week on youtube. Check out my channel to see
them.
Ice Cube is now my favorite MC! "Raider Nation"
just might be the new theme song for my show.
Shout out to the Redland and model Maria Davis
for calling in to last weeks show"...
Nesto
(WODU-VA): "What's
up people? Another week has gone by, and the passing of
Roc Raida still stings more then I though it
would. Maybe it's because I actually meet the guy a few
times and he was super humble and down to earth. RIP Roc
Raida.
The weather is getting cooler, and I must say I'm
enjoying not running the AC and just having the windows
open, but I'm sure within the next month I'll be
complaining that it's cold in the mornings.
On a sports note, HOW ABOUT THEM REDSKINS???
Haha.. if anyone reading this is a skins fan, sorry for
the lost, but the past couple of years the skins have
shown that they like to choke against losing teams. Just
so happens the recent team happens to be the Detroit
Lions, with a history of 19 straight loses. That
streak is no more, thanks to the skins. I'm off to Tokyo
on biz! See you in 1 month"...
