John
Wooden,
a staid Midwesterner who migrated to U.C.L.A. and
became college basketball's most successful coach,
earning the nickname the Wizard of Westwood and an
enduring place in sports history, died Friday. He was
99. Wooden created a sports dynasty against which all
others are compared, and usually pale. His teams at
U.C.L.A. won 10 national championships in a 12-season
stretch from 1964 to 1975. From 1971 to 1974, U.C.L.A.
won 88 consecutive games, still the N.C.A.A.
record (R.I.P.)...

name is Philip Rei (WHUS-CT) and I'm

There's a new artist who has been making quite a name
for himself around the UConn area and has started to
reach beyond. His name is Fimz and not only is he
a skilled lyrical threat but a proven producer,
producing many of his own beats as well as distributing
them to emcees worldwide. Attached is his debut mixtape
"Only One Man" which put him on the map around CT. He is
currently working on his sophomore release entitled "The
Lyrical Quarterback". Please hit me with any feedback
you got for this tape and if you are spinning it.
Recommended tracks are: 9,12,13,15,17,20. Thank you and
I look forward to hearing from you.

After
several years of being stuck in neutral, Michael
Jackson’s hometown of Gary, Indiana is
finally moving forward with plans to build a $300
million museum and arts center dedicated to the King
of Pop...
40-year-old Mariners’ slugger Ken Griffey, Jr.
turned in his jersey last Wednesday night after calling
up team president telling him his career was done, just
like that. Unfortunately, there will be no farewell
tour, but he is one of the best players of all time and
his legacy will stand forever in the history of the
MLB...
WHAT'S UPPER WITH DJ ROB SWIFT???
Let's see, we're about 30 days away from the half way
point of the year and already I've:
-
launched my own Internet radio show.
-
dropped a full length album.
-
toured Europe, Australia and North America
Goes
to show what a little bit of hard work can accomplish.
But you know what? That's all in the past and as
Bruce Lee says "flowing water never grows stale".
Thus, I'd like to share with you all what I have in the
works for the rest of the year.
Let's
start with what I got going on this month. First off,
I'm happy to disclose I've been chosen by DJ TIMES as
one of America's top 100 DJs (http://www.americasbestdj.net/bestdj/top100.htm#profile_19).
Accordingly, I've been entered into America's Best DJ,
an online vote conducted by DJ Times. If you guys
feel like having a little fun with this, please take a
couple of minutes out of your day and vote for me, I'd
appreciate the support. Overall, whether I win or not,
it's an honor to be mentioned in such a prestigious
category. When I decided as a young kid to enter my
first DJ competition, my goal was simply to make an
impression on fans of the art. Judging by the
acknowledgment given to me by DJ Times, it seems I've
accomplished my goal and for that I am very
thankful! Check for the debut of the June episode of
my internet radio show Dope On Plastic on Scion Radio
17. June features yours truly on the turntables for
the entire 3 hours. Considering I was going at it alone
when composing this month's show, I really dug deep in
the record crates. Thus, I think you'll enjoy the
selection of music I played this month. For those iTunes
junkies out there, you can download my show on to your
phone if you have the app for it. Just click on the Hip
Hop/Rap Radio and click on DOPE ON PLASTIC. If you're
interested in listening on the Internet, just log on to

9pm
eastern...

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ
Babe (Mixtapes-Detroit):
"So put your hands in the air.. and keep them
there.. still keep them there.. Now run ya pockets
punk!!! Win, win, win!!!
Hell I need to rob a few folks these days, all of those
Obama stimulus packages just didn't seem to work.
It's way too many broke people around me, I need to ship
them off to an island.
Well, in this newsletter.. It's just about talking a ton
of trash, mentioning things that are useless or stupid,
and occasional talking shop with you all. A few weeks
back I attended The Core DJ Retreat in Orlando.
1st let me give a huge Fuck You to the doorman who told
me that the 7-11 was "just down the street".
Well after I walked for 2 miles down an Orlando highway
in 90 degree weather with some tight ass shoes on, I
found the 7-11. Also let me state that the hotel was off
the chain, there were so many drunk MILFs walking around
that hotel past 11pm.. it was Cougar City.
I got to catch up with a few of my good DJ friends,
there are way too many to name. If I gave you the
infamous head nod, then I'm talking about you. The
BET
Awards are this month in LA, I'm looking to be there..
waiting on someonnnnnnnne... I hope a bunch of ya'll
don't venture into The Jungle or east LA on some I'm
curious stuff, those LA dudes love to make the news.
Next time I'm in LA I wanna go back to that spot where
everything you order automatically comes with chili,
stop by Ameba Records & visit Byze One's
gang infested neighborhood where he neglected to tell me
the common enemy is black people.. Yea, thanks Byze...
Oh yea, Latin Prince has to buy me a drink too..
I only drink the good stuff Papa.. Old Englsih 800:

Will
(WCBN-MI):
"Big up to everyone who was in town for the Detroit
Electronic Music Festival. With hundreds of
thousands of people in town rocking to some of the
founders and best in Electronic Music. It's funny that
most don't realize that early Hip Hop DJ's learned to
rock the turntables to these early songs that set the
stage for this music. Like Cosmic Car, Clear and
Al-Naafiysh or as we called it "It's Time". Which
was part of the foundation for battling and cutting.
Memories but I could go on forever. Big shout to
everyone who check me out this past weekend in the mix
at the various stations thanks for the love. And I'll
see everyone Thursday at Babs Underground Lounge for the
Ro-Spit listening party. For more information

DJ
Sage (CFRO-Vancouver,
BC): "We got into a dope Double Shot from a good friend
of the show, Homeboy Sandman. His new album "The
Good Sun". You may know him from sick tracks such "Gun
Control" and one of our Urban Renewal Project
intro tracks. The album is sick, and this young gun has
a bright future
thanks to his unique flow and content. Check him, and
the album out at:
www.HomeboySandman.com
We also have been reminiscing over the legendary Hip-Hop
publication, The Source. We weighed in on
whether or not the albums that earned the 5 mic rating
really deserved it. Next week, we'll check out the
albums that were retroactively given the top rating.
Expect a post on the URP blog
(
www.UrbanRenewalProject.net ) further
investigating this topic! Feel free to leave your 2
cents in the comments section!
We also got into a cypher which included the resident,
2Face Al, Divid'ID and Big Moss...the boys
tore it to shreds so make sure you keep it locked for
that! Podcast coming any minute to
www.UrbanRenewalProject.net! Tons of tracks, from Nas
to Ayinde, The Game to Talib Kweli,
and everything in between! Do NOT sleep!"...
Stuart DeLa Rosa
(KSMT-CO):
"Hope all is love with you and your family! Everything
is wonderful out here in the
Square
State
not to mention that
summer is almost here for us up here in the mountains.
Summer only last 3 months up here at 9,000 feet of
elevation so I am defiantly going to have a happy june,
July and August, with not much snow! Keep pushing out
all that good music cause I know my listener appreciate
all the fresh new stuff that I bring to KSMT 102.7
& 102.1 airwaves"...
Shareef Abdullah
(WRFL-KY): "Peace DJ fam....first and foremost I
wanted to say congrads to my station WRFL, for finally
completing the upgrade to our station antenna. This week
we went from a meager 250 watts to 7900 watts. This has
been a project 10 years in the making and I'm glad I'm
still here to witness this mighty accomplishment! Also,
special shout out to Ayinde for being on the show
last weekend. For a young dude he is definitely one of
the exceptions to what we see on a regular. His new
single, "Do It" is pure butta!
This
week we add into rotation a dope single by Vinnie Paz,
head honcho of the JMT/AOTP crew. Vinnie drops
one of his most introspective joints to date addressing
relevant topics that shine through on his new single,
"Keep Movin." Can't wait to check out his new solo jawn,
"Season of The Assassin!" Also, in the mix is the
soulful gem by Arash. His new effort, "What's
Going On??" is a nice change of pace from the norm and
last but not least is the return of one of my favorite
Philly emcees, Hezekiah. His new futuristic
banger, "Fired Up!" is tailored made for maximum head
nodding and features dope cameos from Kweli &
Bahamadia, hot ish, no doubt! Until next week, be
safe and support good hip hop...as-salaam alakium!"...
Savvy
(KSJS-KDON-
CA): Hay hay hay hay errbody hope all is well. lot's of
shows this week to hit the Bay Area and also the Central
Coast. Just yesterday, Talib Kweli and Hi Tek
were performing at The Fillmore in SF while on
tour for the new album, Revolutions Per Minute.
Black Smith label mates, Strong Arm Steady also
came out to peform with the fellas known as
Reflection Eternal and the crowd was thick (show was
almost sold out). The crowd really went bannanas when
surprise guest Jacka came out to show some love
to the SAS family. Peeps were in for a big treat though,
because it did not stop there. When it came time for
Reflection Eternal's encore, fans were hit with
another surpise performance of "93 till Infinity"
by none other then Bay Area veterans, Souls Of
Mischief. Very dope to see the love between all
these talented stars shared on one stage. That is what
hip hop is about. Tommorow I am heading out to the
Catalyst in
Santa
Cruz
to check out Nneka perform with Nas and
Damian Marley. Friday I head out once again to check
Zion I perform with Erk The Jerk, and then
after party at the Red Room in Santa Cruz
with DJ Shea and DJ R-Cade for some funk,
hip hop and reggae. Stop by our page and peep all the
new music videos I have posted up from Statik
Selektah & Consequence, Fashawn & Blu, and
the Chosen Few. Have a blessed day everyone!"...
