FORGIVING CHRIS BROWN by: Thembisa Mshaka
I am on record as being one who advocated for the
forgiveness of the multi-talented, multi-platinum Chris
Brown as far back as
February 2009, when
the most media and much of the public wanted to banish
and boycott him forever. His missteps with the media in
the aftermath turned the fury way up, as he looked far
from remorseful—especially in contrast to Rihanna’s
composed, deliberate testimony on 20/20. I understand
the fury; I was furious about his assault of Rihanna on
Grammy Night 2009 too.
But this rigid, visceral approach to such a layered
issue is neither humane nor realistic. Endless
castigation does not break the cycle of relationship
violence. If we want young men, especially young men of
color, to stop abusing women, we must condemn the
behavior, and support the full rehabilitation of
the person. Ron Artest has shown us that therapy can
help anyone rise to become a champion in work and in
life. Chris must seek help from psychological
professionals, spiritual counselors, and anger
management experts. Chris is going to be atoning and
reconciling for years to come. That process is well
underway.
The part we as consumers, fans, and members of the media
can support him with is the revitalization of his
career. Chris Brown is a gifted young performer who
deserves to make a living at what he is passionate
about. BET provided Chris Brown with the opportunity of
a lifetime on the
2010 BET Awards: to
pay homage to his mentor Michael Jackson with a powerful
medley of the King of Pop’s hit songs and signature
dance routines. True to form, the media looked for the
worst from a heartfelt and otherwise technically
flawless performance–until the part where Chris broke
down emotionally in an effort to sing “Man In The
Mirror”. His sincerity was questioned. His tears, snot
and hoarse voice were called ‘staged’. Just another
signal that the path of least resistance, further
vilification of the young Black male, was being tread
yet again. A brother can’t even emote!
But the audience on their feet at the Shrine and
millions on couches across America knew that what he was
feeling was very real: the overwhelm of Michael passing
and finally being able to commemorate his idol’s life;
the passage of the hardest of his own 21 years; the
energy of the room singing when he could not, crying
with him, releasing with him. This is what it means to
be human. This collective catharsis was an important
step in the healing process for everyone who empathizes
with Chris and wishes him well. It’s exactly why that
moment was the one everyone was talking about the
morning after and well into this week.
The crime will not be forgotten, but the man needs to be
forgiven. We say we want him to take a look at himself
and make a change; change is hard. Let him do it.

According to Sports Illustrated, representatives of
Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have
agreed to terms on a deal that would place men in the
ring together at long last for a November 13th title
fight. The terms, which have apparently been approved by
Pacquiao, are pending the approval of Floyd Mayweather,
but otherwise, it looks like we could finally see the
blockbuster that boxing fans have wanted all along...

A MESSAGE FROM DJ AARON
WADE (
djaaronwade@yahoo.com ):
"Been a while since you've heard from me (for a lot of
you). Since I retired my FM radio show in
Milwaukee,
I've been career and family focused.
BUT... i just can't stay away! I've been given this cool
opportunity, and I jumped on it. I'm now the Program
Director for "Underground Hip Hop" on
www.slacker.com.
Hopefully you all know what slacker is... if you don't,
in short, it's internet radio (like pandora or aol) and
it has a sweet mobile app available for all smartphones.
I recently linked up w/ the head folks in San Diego,
explained my ideas on the station, and BAM! I'm
programming this stellar station!
Please go to www.slacker.com and look under "hip hop" to
find the station. It just went live tonight. PLEASE
PLEASE send me all your new singles for consideration,
as I can add songs and change the rotation on the
station at ANY TIME on my own time and 100% at my own
discretion.
YOU KNOW HOW I DO - nothing but HEAT! I built the
station on the foundation of that classic boom-bap rap
sound... that's what it's all about.
So please make sure you send me the hot mp3's. This is
worldwide, and I spent hours and hours and hours
preparing it for the debut. The station is comprised of
the best 450 songs (not mainstream) that i could come up
with... 80's, 90's, 99-09, and current.
Thank you in advance for working with me and checking
out this dope ass new station!"...

OFFICIAL Newsletter 4
Whew, had to get back on this newsletter
thing-a-ma-jig, time to kick more knowledge for the
ill-informed out there, the people looking to read some
useless jokes & for those who genuinely care about me..
all 3 of you.
First! Let me congratulate everyone who's graduating
from any type of school, be it high school, college,
med, nail tech, or getting your GED in prison - salute!
I must dedicate a special section to my twin boys
Davonte & Deonte who graduated from high school & turned
18 June 22.. I'm not too gangsta to still tell my kids I
love them & they still tell me that they love me.. awww...
Now their ass needs a job!
Anyway, the
BET Awards are coming up & the host is Queen Latifah.. Now
I like Latifah but so I won't clown on her but let's
hope this show doesn't turn into straight buffoonery
(again) or even let Justin Beiber perform.
Then again that would be the shit seeing mullet ass
Justin crackin' out Baby while Soulja Boy is sitting in
the front seat. So it's official that the ex-drug dealer
Rick Ross is suing the
fake-but-Steve-Harvey-when-he-had-hair-perfect-hairline-and-beard
Rick Ross over the use of his name. So is that the
reason we're seeing Ricky Rozey more these days? I don't
know where I stand on this one, sure Rick No.1 has the
real name but he did flood the streets with drugs and
destroy a lot of lives - should he be celebrated? Then
we have Rick No.2 who wouldn't admit to being a C.O.,
most likely has one of the most unlikely street lives
among the game, but makes fuckin' great music.. But has
poor taste in babymamas..
Either way work it out..
Ya boy Waka took another L when he was paid recently
with fake money to the amount of $10,000. This dude Waka
is like the 2010 Yung Berg, next somebody is gonna cut
his dreads off and pass them around like Bergs chain.
You'll see everyone on World Star taking pics looking
like a rasta man..
You can catch me on
www.svmixradio.com every Tuesday with the crew known
as The Drama
Queens -
now I'm not a Drama Queen, I'm like Bosley from
Charlie's Angels.. I'm the dude sitting there surrounded
by a bunch of beautiful women & they cook pancakes for
me.
So check us out..
www.svmixradio.com Tuesday 6pm - 8pm..
Thanks to a few friends I should be back on my
international tip soon, looking to spread my wings to
Japan, Holland, Africa & Jamaica.. and Pittsburgh. Hell,
if you've ever been to the Hill District in
Pittsburgh
then you'll know know that it looks like a 3rd world
country.
Shout out to Adam Favors on his belated birthday, ya'll
hit him up and wish him a happy 50th birthday. Oops, he
just looks like he's 50.. actually Adam is 19.
One thing that irks me more than a verse from Bizarre
(sorry Bizzy LOL) is the fact that Twitter & Facebook
has exposed the educational system of our generation and
let's just say that a lot of people are dumb as fuck.
Now.. should you see any typos in here blame it on the
fact it's almost 3am & I'm about as tired as a Kelly
Rowland hair-do & I know that some people, myself
included, make up words as we have Cyber-Ebonics i.e.
cool = kool... alright = aiight.. sometimes we just want
to look "kool" while typing/texting.
Then we have the people are who are just as dumb as a
bag of rocks that type things as: I was so waisted last
night, I don't know weather I can go to work.
If you didn't catch the illness in that sentence you too
are dumb as fuck.. yes you
TOO not TO, but
TOO..
There is a difference between there, their & they're &
80% of the people reading this always fuck it up..
Maybe I shouldn't take it that serious, but that's from
the private school mom paid for 8 years which required
me to wear the same fuckin' tight ass, blue knee high
pants 5 days a week looking like a nerd ass Gary Coleman
walking to school.. See, I be smart now!
SHOUTS:
I wanna send shout-outs to: Carlton, saw you at the

Rap
Attack takes a "WHAT'S UPPER" look this week with:
DJ
Luicidal (KSJS-CA): "Left Coast Live was a
big success this weekend in the sun. Shouts out to
Fritzo and the Bring It Back movement. Catch
them on the Van's Warped Tour this summer. We're
staying busy all season long. Shows from Slop Opera,
and Babbleon in San Jose. Soul Therapy
grand opening at Maxwell's in
Oakland.
Best of San Francisco going down at the Metreon tonight!
Shouts out to Pacific Art Collective! Big Fourth
of July event this weekend, Filth of July bass festival
out at Angels Camp! RBL Posse's Black C is
stopping thru my show this Friday. That's what's up on
this side"...
DJ
Chill Will (WCBN-MI): "What's up? Been a good
week with all the shows in town. This past week St.
Andrew had Jay Electronica,
Slum
Village
and a host of other Hip Hop cats rocking the stage. I
also had Phoenix Flames call into the show and
talk about his new dope Single "Hello World" and what
he's got poppin. But it's time for me to get outta here,
Barrington Leavy is in town tonight. Which should
be a dope show, and Friday night DJ Jazzy Jeff
will be here to rock how a real DJ should. For more
information about me DJ Chill Will go to
www.myspace.com/djchillwill734 or
www.twitter.com/chillwill734"...
Shareef
Abdullah
(WRFL-KY):
"Peace friends & A-Alikes...perfect summer
weather is finally in my midst, not too hot and a nice
breeze, reminds me of Cali weather! This week we got
another nice handful of dope adds, First up is the
mesmerizing single, "Rock Me II" by the Mission/Project
Move/Electric emcee Moe Pope. "Rock Me II" sports
seriously dope production and killa kuts that gives me
an idea of the type of Hip-Hop A Tribe Called Quest
would be making right now, no joke! Frank Nitt
builds off the momentum of his last single, "L.O.V.E."
with another serious winner on the soulful stunning "Go
Girl." This cat is 2 for 2 since he has been on his solo
mission. Equally as impressive is the Hip-Hop meets jazz
fusion of "Hip Hop Meets Bee Bop" by Hip Hop's Damage
Control. These cats combine Old School Hip-Hop
techniques with classical jazz instrumentation that
would make Guru proud! And finally we have a dope
selection from the Florida trio Llamabeats
featuring Parable on the suicidal, "Gun In My
Hand." As always be safe and sound...salaam"...
DJ Sage
(CFRO-Vancouver,
BC):
"We
switched up the Double Shot format this week.
Toronto's own Marco Polo is on the grind and just released
"The Stupendous Adventures of Marco Polo", so we got
into some cuts from the new albums as well as classics
from one of the best producers in the game right now.
The new album is a banger and should be supported!
Features include Large Pro, Rustee Juxx, Skyzoo
and plenty more! Don't sleep...
We also had the privilege of having a Vancity veteran
from The City Planners, Jeff Spec. We discussed
his new project, "Sneakerboxxx", working and touring
with a live band, and the rise of online distribution as
opposed to the old school techniques. The album sounds
real nice and features the likes of Moka Only, NaRai
and more. Check Jeff Spec out at
www.JeffSpec.BandCamp.com,
www.Twitter.com/JeffSpec, and
www.Facebook.com/JeffSpec!
We also had the pleasure of having DJ @Large from
Winnipeg come by and lay down most of the music for us
tonight. Make sure you check out his radio show, The
Dope Joints, at
http://dopespot.podomatic.com!
Tons of big tunes tonight! Marco Polo, Jeff Spec, D-Sisive,
J Bizness and Richard Wright, Common, Scarface,
and many more. Make sure you check out the podcast very
shortly at
